AppleTV 2 - Streaming Movies are Skipping

I have had an AppleTV 2 since the day it came out and have never had a problem with 720P content skipping, until now. My setup is an Apple Airport Extreme 3rd Gen, MacbookPro Retina (late 2013), and an AppleTV 2. The AppleTV is hard wired via Cat5e cable to the Airport Extreme. The MacBookPro is on Wifi and using 802.11n on both the laptop and the airport.
I'm using iTunes home sharing and all devices are up to date. I only see the skipping while the movie is starting (for the first 5-10min) and is being downloaded to the AppleTV. As soon as the movie's progress bar is full, the skipping stops. It's as if the AppleTV2 is overloaded doing both tasks and this was never an issuse before the latest AppleTV update.
Is anyone else having the same problem and is Apple aware of this? This should be somthing Apple can fix with an update to the 2nd Gen AppleTVs.

Try the following steps, check whether things are working after each step where appropriate, before trying the next.
    1.    Restart the Apple TV (Settings > General > Restart).
    2.    Restart the Apple TV by removing ALL the cables for 30 seconds.
    3.    Restart your router. (Also try removing it’s power cord for at least 30 seconds)
    4.    Reset the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Reset all settings)
    5.    Restore the Apple TV (Settings > General > Reset > Restore)

  • ITunes movies are skipping

I try to play movies and tv shows on my computer and they skipp the entire time. What is up with that? I have all the updates on everything and I know that I have an old computer, but even when I don't run anything but it, it still has problems. Can anyone help me?

One thing I have noticed is that the Xena episode I downloaded is at a much higher total bitrate (1653kbps) than the episode of Reno 911 I downloaded over the summer, which is only (668kbps), to check i downloaded a free 2 minute video 'Scrubs' with a total bitrate of 1543kbps. iTunes has increased the size of there total bitrates on TV Shows and probably movies. If your computer doesn't have the juice to handle that bitrate the video will be jerky. Does anybody know how to lower the bitrate on downloaded videos from itunes, help the little guys out here. : )

  • Movies do not show up on AppleTV but they are in iTunes

I have around 220 movies in iTunes.  Most all were purchased through Apple.  I am having an issue where several of my movies are not showing up on my Apple TV.  The movies that do not show up were all purchased and watched on my Apple TV but once it synced to my iTunes library they no longer show up.. I have reset and restored everything including my entire iTunes library, took almost an entire day, but still have the same issue.  My apple TV is a 1st gen. The ones that do not show up are a mix between HD and SD so that is not the issue.  The only common thread between these movies is that they were all purchased and watched initially through my apple TV. HELP please!

As far as the resolution, I do not have the exact info but they were all purchased through iTunes via my AppleTV.
    Examples:
    - Journey to the Center of the Earth HD and SD
    - Tranformers HD and SD
    - Journey 2: The Mysterious Island SD
    - Sherlock Holmes SD
Thats just a few of the movies that do not show up on my AppleTV but are in iTunes and can be played on my Laptop or synced to my iPad, iPod, iPhone and iTouch.
I have tried syncing these movies to my AppleTV and it shows syncing but completes way too quickly and the movies are not on my AppleTV.  When I look at my AppleTV via iTunes the movies are checked off so as to sync.  No exclamation point or any error for that matter ever occurs.

  • Possible to stream movies from external HD- Airport Extreme- AppleTV?

    Hi Folks,
I'm new to these boards so 'hi'. I have looked all over Google and various other forums for this answer but haven't received anything definitive.
I'm basically trying to find out if it's possible for me to connect an external hard drive to my Airport Extreme Base Station, and have that stream movies to my Apple TV?
The main reason for wanting to do this is my only computer is a MacBook Pro which only has a 120gig hard drive on it, and I only typically have 20-30gig free at any given time after applications etc. I want to store all my movies in one location, was thinking of buying a 1TB hard drive and connect as above.
I don't want to shell out for the hard drive if this won't work though. I'm frustrated at myself because this is what I thought the internal hard drive of the Apple TV did and thats why I bought the 160GB version, but everywhere I read people say DO NOT store movies on the Apple TV because it's really buggy. So what is the 160GB??
Any help, guidance, and tips would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Frank Drebin

AppleTV can only access media that iTunes is aware of by virue of them being added to it's library.
The files that iTunes knows about can be on any drives that your Macbook can access, internal, external or newtork based.
AppleTV relies on iTunes to fetch data either to sync or stream and cannot connect to external or network drives itself.
A drive attached to your base station may well work but it will depend on your network being up to the task - iTunes must be running, fetch the data from the drive across your network, then send it to AppleTV.
AppleTV is not designed as a storage device. It has 2 modes of media playback - synced and streamed. Syncing media stores a copy or mirror of a media file on it so it can be used when iTunes is not running - the 160GB lets you store many more media file copies thn the 40GB. For streaming, which iTunes is required for, and which transfers data on the fly for AppleTV from the computer or connected drive via itunes, the size of the AppleTv drive is irrelevant.
While what you want to do would probably work, for streaming to run smootly without dropouts the network would need to be up to it - in most cases it will, in some it won't.
Your other option of course is to store most of your movies on an external USB drive and plug that into the MBP when you want to stream or sync to AppleTv. You just need to change iTunes Preferences to not copy files into it's library thus not filling up the MBP drive. Same method you'd use for adding files from a drive attached to your base station. An alternative is to create a new itunes library completely on an external drive.

  • ITunes Videos (Both Movies and TV Shows) are skipping/ studdering.

iTunes Videos (Both Movies and TV Shows) are skipping/ studdering.
These videos were taken from my hard drive, converted with Format Factory, then placed in itunes.
ON ipad the videos playback perfectly, but in itunes itself it fails drastically.
Same problem happens with quicktime. If i open these videos up with quicktime, it studders and skips, while if i open it with VLC, it works fine.
I have already disabled 3d acceleration, which helped a very small bit.
The Rest of itunes runs smoothly, just video playback is screwed

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Itunes 10.5.1
    Quicktime 7.7.1

    Update
It turns out that the reason for not playing TV shows and movies is not the network.
Something happened with the files while copying them from the Macbook to the NAS station.
I noticed that after copying a TV show from the NAS Station back onto the Macbook Air drive; it was not possible to import that file into iTunes. iTunes ignored importing that file.
On the other side the TV shows will be played by Quicktime, either from the NAS station or from the Macbook.
It might be important to mention that the NAS station is not OSX formatted.
Does someone know what happened ?

  • Movies/Videos are skipping around

After the 7.02 download, my videos and movies all skip around..... I'v reinstalled about 5 times and it keeps doing the same thing.....
Is there any way to fix this, or is there any way to download version 7.01 again.... p
    Please help.

Having the same exact problem with my windows XP machine. It was fine until I downloaded 7.0.2 and now all of my movies and TV shows that previously played fine are skipping and pausing. This is happening in both I Tunes and Quicktime. Under the I tunes support there are several suggestions to fix this, but none of them worked for me. Given that several of the suggested solutions have to do with changing the settings of Quicktime perhaps it is a problem in there. One way to go back would be if you have a disk that came with an ipod that would contain the old software, but you would need to back up all of your songs and video before uninstalling I tunes and starting fresh. It is interesting that this is not a problem on my G4 or ibook which I also upgraded, only on the windows machines. Let's hope that apple gets 7.0.3 out quickly and solves this problem.

  • TS3623 Apple TV3 will not stream movies

My Apple TV3 will not stream movies and it takes a very long time for music to stream from my MacBook. I readjusted the resolution settings and it was the same thing. It gives me an "error occurred loading this content; try again later" message after spending several minutes of buffering after I try to play movies.
I have high speed 15 mbps Mediacom internet, which has never had any issues. I called Mediacom and they said my connectivity was excellent. I have reset my router/modem/AppleTV to no avail.  My homesharing is on and I have followed all other recommendations I could find on Apple forums concerning this same issue.
I am going to return this product for a Roku if I am not offerred a solution on the matter.
Apple, I hope you realize this is not an isolated incident.

I appreciate your frustration, but remember we are fellow users here, and you are not talkingto Apple support directly.
If you are connected via wifi try using ethernet if you can to rule out a wifi issue.
My AppleTVs are very stable with internet or LAN streaming 99% of the time, but since yesterday they have all behaved oddly - weird!

  • How do you stream movies on ATV?

In iTunes, when I set the speakers to "ATV" instead of "Computer" I can stream music but if I open a movie it just plays on my computer. Can you stream video?

    AppleTV menus:
    Movies - under My Movies
TV Shows - under My TV Shows
    Music - under My Music
this assumes you set AppleTV up for sync/streaming in iTunes using the 5 digit code.
If you just set it up for streaming files, then under the corresponding sections you will have an entry for Shared Movies/TV Shows/Music instead.
If you have no media showing up on the AppleTV menus check under Settings>Computers that the iTunes library is listed there and is white not greyed out. Also does the device get listed under iTunes devices?
Synced material is copied to AppleTV from iTunes and can be played when iTunes is not running.
Streaming material causes the files to go to AppleTV when they're needed on the fly via iTunes>network>AppleTV so iTunes must be running to transfer the file. AppleTV decodes and processed the files in real time itself unlike the Airport (Speaker) function where iTunes decodes the file to the music bitstream and sends that to AppleTV from where it goes to your TV or hi-fi.
The things listed under the My TV Shows/My Movies/My Music are a combined list of both synced (copied) material and also things available to stream live from iTunes. The aim is to make the stream/sync process transparent to the user but it can also cause confusion as you might think all the stuff is on AppleTV, plus the list will change if itunes is shut down.

  • Streaming movies freeze, pause and re-buffer amm the time

    Hi to all.
When I stream movies to my Apple TV 2.3.1 (i.e. the movies are not synced and copied to aTV's hdd) I constantly have a pause after a few minutes, then the aTV rebuffers (blue bar filling up on the bottom of the screen) plays for a few minutes then rebuffers again, then plays, etc...
I have an N only (5GHz) WiFi network connecting my iMac to an Airport Express base station,to the apple TV.
Is there anything I can do?

sounds like you have a slow network... could be interference with the wireless signal (neighbors WiFI, other 5GHz devices, more walls, long distance etc)
    try this...
open activity monitor and go to networking
set a movie to sync to the appleTV, then initiate the sync
in activity monitor you can see what kind of transfer rates you are getting
5GHz is faster (do you have wide bands enabled to get the speed boost?) but over a shorter distance and more apt to be affected by walls, floors etc.. 2.4GHz is better in this respect but more apt to be effected by other 2.4GHz devices because more wireless devices, WiFi networks etc work in this radio band.
1st figure out if your network is slow..

  • Streaming movies to ATV...

Hi, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction.
I'm trying to stream my movies to my ATV. I get the code from the ATV to enter on the computer, but the screen to accept the code doesn't appear. I get a "ATV is busy".
I've unchecked all of my movies, I've chosen photos and music that I want to sync. The photos and music aren't a problem. They've synced. But I seem to be missing something when it comes to streaming movies from iTunes.
I have the small ATV and can only sync about 15 movies at a time. I have over a 100 movies that I would like to see without having to delete movies off the ATV and then add new movies. That kind of takes a long time.
    Thanks,
    mhh~

The 2.0+ software which came in last year changed completely the nature of syncing/streaming.
Personally I still prefer the 1.0/1.1 software for simplicity but the 2.0 updates have added new 'features' and blatantly shove the iTunes Store in your face.
Whereas with software 1.0/1.1 you could choose either:
    1 - AppleTV - synced material
    2 - a streaming only library
the options have now been blurred and confused to make things 'easier'.
The 'AppleTV' synced only option has been replaced.
In Settings>Computers, the top entry is the sync library now.
This library however automatically streams as well if iTunes is running to allow non-synced stuff to display - unless you have the 'show synced items only' option in one of teh Device tabs selected. The media is seen under My Music/My Photos/My Movies in the various lists for each category. When iTunes is off, you only see synced content in the list, when on the list merges with stuff that can stream from the sync library.
In Settings>Computers, streaming libraries are added/appear below the sync library in the list. When added and a code accepted successfully, you get a new entry in the media sections - under My Music you get Shared Music, under My Movies, Shared Movies.....these shared options let you select a streaming only library.
However, if you have iTunes set up as a sync library and it's your only library, you need do nothing to enable streaming other than ensuring itunes is on, and that you've not ticked 'show synced items only' on the AppleTV device tab.
