AppleTV altering video

Problem: When viewing video content on my new AppleTV from personal collection or bought from iTunes store the video is squished.
The setup I have:
TV: Sony KV-27XBR45 (old standard tv)
DVD Player
S-Video Converter from svideo.com
Dell Inspiron E1705
Just bought AppleTV
AppleTV resolution 480i (only one supported for old TV)
What I have tried:
1) "Normal setup" - component cables from AppleTV --> svideo converter --> TV
Outcome = video squished vertically
2) Test #1 - Play DVD in DVD player ---> TV (with composite cables)
Outcome = widescreen video shows like it should
3) Test #2 - Component cables from DVD player ---> svideo converter ---> TV
Outcome = widescreen video shows like it should (same DVD used)
4) Test #3 - Rip DVD used in Tests 1 & 2 and play on computer
Outcome = widescreen video shows like it should
4) Test #4 - Used Ripped file from Test #3 play on computer and connect to TV using svideo output on computer
Outcome = widescreen video shows like it should
5) Test #5 - Share iTunes library from computer, setup AppleTV as described in "Normal setup", on AppleTV select movie from shared and play.
ALSO: I have tried to play a movie bought on iTunes
Outcome = video squished vertically
*Note: I am going to switch the s-video converter out for the HDMI/VGA adapters trick because of costs. Test #3 shows that svideo converter is not causing the problem.
Does anyone have any idea? Seems like AppleTV isn't reading Animorphic bit correctly?
Thanks

Thank T.
I did read the specs so I'm certainly not ticked at apple.
I'm just bummed b/c the dvd player will show widescreen as you mentioned and the kicker, my iphone will when i connect it to the same tv.
I thought and did the ***-ume thing , that if the iphone could do it so could it's cousin, the atv
I was wrong and I also hoped my tv was 480p (I bought it off someone years ago so I didn't have a manual to double check that 'minor' issue oopsy
Maybe i can sweet talk the wifey into a new tv.
I doubt it, but you never know.
On a different note, I did buy it to transfer my own home movies and those work just fine. It's neat to start organizing them and I like the music features as well.
Maybe i can find a good 42" plasma 720p tv somewhere

  • How do I change effects in 'Altered Video' timeline in Photoshop CS6?

I added a filter to my video but it only lasts for a few frames. There are little marks shown where I added it in the Altered Video section of the timeline.
How do I apply a filter or effect to the entire clip?
Also when I ad a filter such as Lens Correction, it only lasts for a few frames..How do I get it to remain?

  • AppleTV Syncs Video But Not Sound-Sometimes

When I sync my AppleTV with the movies in my iTunes library, sometimes when I play them on my AppleTV I don't have any sound! Picture is fine. When I play the files on my iMac from my music library everything's fine. Anyone have any idea why the sound doesn't get synced sometimes?

    Hi.
The movies are from iTunes music store, some homemade, some dvds I've made from old VHS converted for AppleTv with HandBrake.
They play fine, all of them, on my iMac from my iTunes library.
The AppleTv is synced through my wireless network Airport Extreme. The AppleTV is connected to my HD TV with HDMI.
It's only on a few movies that the sound "disappears" on. No common denominator that I can find, except that they were converted with HandBrake but 99% of them play ok. And why would they play in iTunes on my iMac and lose the sound when synced to AppleTv? The video is perfect!
    Thanks.

  • Altering video playback speed using stage.framerate

    Hi All,
I'm trying to programatically change the speed at which an
flv file plays, eg. so I can do slow-motion, or fast-motion video.
From what I have read, I think I should be using
stage.framerate = x, but I cannot get this to work.
I think I might be missing something very obvious (I am new
to flex / flash) so please feel free to test the obvious.
I have included below the flashlog output, and attached the
    single .as file.
The behavior that I would expect (and that I want) from this
is for the video to play at ~4x speed.
The observed behavior is that it plays at normal speed.
    I have also tried 'vid.stage.framerate = 100'
    What am I doing wrong?
    thanks,

    flashlog output
    ===========

Error #2095: flash.net.NetStream was unable to invoke
    callback onMetaData.

    Thanks again Luigi.
I got it to work !
I'm using flex builder, not Flash, so I had to embed the
    video another way.
I converted the flv to an SWF using SUPER/ ffmpeg, then used
the code below to load the swf. (credit to shadowmint)
It works ! Beware, this only works with *no sound* in the
swf. The first time i did it with sound the framerate could not be
    altered.
Still, this all feels a little hacky to me, so one more
    question:
    4. In your research, did you investigate how easily all this
    can be done in Silverlight?
(im not yet married to the flash solution, even though the
    penetration is better..)
    cheers

  • AppleTV loses video output after sitting and has to be power cycled

I have a strange problem. When I switch back to the AppleTV after having been watching regular TV or any other activity on my entertainment system, I often come back to no video from the AppleTV or it is on the resolution selection screen. If it is on the resolution selection, and I select 1080i, the sound of the startup animation happens, but no video. Either way, I have to unplug the AppleTV and let it start again to get video back. The same is when it starts up and it has no video at all.
Last night it just sat there for a long time with the Apple logo in the middle of the screen and did nothing else... I had to pull the plug to get it to restart.
Do I have a bad unit? I am using Harmony Remote, and I am wondering if it might be sending something that is confusing the AppleTV.
How safe is it to unplug it a few times a day? I can't imagine that it would be a good thing.
Windows XP   Sony DGB800 Audio Receiver - Mitsubishi 65" DLP TV

No Samsung. I have a Mitsubishi 65" DLP rear projection. I would lean toward it not being the problem because sometimes I get video (just the apple logo) and nothing else and sometimes no video at all. When I get the apple logo, it won't respond to any remote stuff, even though the light is white/blue, rather than orange, indicating startup. It will sit on the apple logo indefinitely.
I have tried switching inputs on the TV when I have no video, and it still didn't help. Rebooting the AppleTV fixes the problem. I've unplugged the hdmi cable and plugged it back in and still no help.
It's just odd. It feels broken/unhappy. It's only a week old and this is the only problem so far. I love it but this one issue is really aggravating me. I'm worried about power cycling so much (at all).
I appreciate any help. Should I take it back to the Apple store and get a new one?

  • Sorting home videos into appletv "home video"  category

I have the lastest update for Appletv Sept 2013 and see there is a "Home videos" categopry and wondered how I could sort only my home videos in the homevideos category and purchased movies into the moview category.
    is that possible?

Try using the Share > iTunes... menu item in iMovie, then sync the movie to Apple TV from iTunes. This is the easiest way of getting an iMovie project onto Apple TV. Is this what you've been doing?

  • Editing photos in one track without altering video in another?

Using Premier Elements 11, and working with an uploaded video with music. I am superimposing photos/videos on top of it. When I edit or move around the photos in the higher tracks, it messes up the audio by inserting breaks/cuts. I want the audio/video to run continuously in the background. Is there a way to lock the video so it can't be edited, while I move around the clips in the tracks above it?
And, a related question: I've placed a photo where I want it in relation to the video track. Is there a way to lock it in at that point in the video so that when I edit photos on the same track before that one, it doesn't shift everything down?
I've read on this forum that one can use the Ctrl key, but that trick doesn't seem to keep things from shifting around on the timeline in this case. Specifically, if I shorten the length of a clip, it slides everything after it to the left, whether or not I hold down the alt or ctrl key.

Yes, holding down the Ctrl key (or the Cmd key on a Mac) while you add photos or video clips will keep the track from rippling as you work.
Unfortunately, that won't keep your tracks from rippling  when you trim your photos.
That's the closest to being able to lock a track.

  • Editing in time line alters video output quality.

This is weird. If I import a basic AVI (raw 1280x768 ) in to a project with the same settings and drop that into the time line, then just export (no editing) some frames or whole sequence (to any file type/codec at the same size and settings) the resulting file is clear as a bell, looks great. But, if I do ~any~ cutting at all the resulting file looks like crap (again with the same export settings as before). I also noticed that in the program window the same thing happens, if the file hasnt been chopped up the view is crystal clear, along with any renders, as soon as I cut it (lets say I remove the first 5 seconds of the clip in the timeline with the "cut" tool) the Program window gets messed up (image gets blurry) and all the resulting renders are also poor. What Am I doing wrong???? Please help.

Yes, Xvid and DivX, are both very heavily compressed CODEC's, and are most often seen in the AVI wrapper.
With either, conversion is the best route, if you have to edit the "delivery-only" material. Please note: file conversion will not regain all the data, lost in compression - only get the file into an editable form.

  • Apple TV for watching photos and videos from IMAC

I am considering purchasing Apple TV 40GB for streaming photos and videos from my IMAC to TV on demand. Is that use case supported well by Apple TV or they are secondary and watching movies and TV shows from Itunes library are the primary use cases? I looked up Apple's page on Apple TV but it does not even talk about watching home videos using Apple TV.
Through posts on this forum and other places, I found that I would have to "export" video in either large or medium format. The question is how is the quality of watching that video using ATV over wireless N network?
Related question is how good is ATV's video card?
Is this a common use cases many people use ATV for? I have recorded lot of videos using Sony mini-DV camcorder but don't end up watching because creating DVD and keeping organized DVD library is a cumbersome process.
The other question I have is about usability of Apple remote. I don't have Iphone or Ipod touch with the remote app. Is the Apple remote good enough for playing videos, photos and occassionaly music?
    Thanks in advance,
    DJ

Thanks. A couple of follow-up questions:
    1) All I need to do to stream is to have Itunes running, right? In other words, I don't need to go to IMAC to initiate streaming. Is there a way to wake up the IMAC if it is in standby mode?
You need imac running with itunes open, and both it an AppleTV connected to the local network.
I don't think it'll work with computer in standby mode.
    2) I am planning to use Imovie's built-in export function. Is that good enough or do I need other softwares mentioned here (MPEGStreamclip or Handbrake)? Where do I get these softwares? Are they significantly better than Imovie's export function?
Both are free one from squared5.com, the other you can Google. iMovie's output may well be fine, but I have found in the past that standard export settings didn't give me best results and better could be achieved either using custom export settings from iMovie or using other apps, some of which can be a bit quicker. You will also be able to use the Handbrake app to make Appletv compatible video of your home made non-commercial DVDs (without menus).
Quality is pretty much in the eye of the beholder so if imovie does the job no reason not to use it.
    3) I have noticed that video quality on my IMAC is not as good as that of same video on DVD created using iDVD. Have 50 inch Plasma TV with up-conversion DVD player. Maybe the graphics card of my IMAC is not as good. I am bringing this up because someone mentioned that quality of video using ATV would be as good as the one seen on IMAC.
Any upscaling done on the DVD player is altering the original content to give a potentially more pleasing image though not adding any real information.
The DVD is likely to be of lower quality (though perhaps barely perceptible if conversion is good) than your source video on the iMac, and any differences are likely to be down to the DVD player vs software playback on the iMac, coupled potentially with scaling and frame interpolation on the TV depending on how the set processes incoming video.
I think it's impossible to say how you'd find AppleTV compared to DVD for playback of your home video though I think the majority of people are more than happy when things have been encoded well.

  • Video connects but sound doesn't always connect to apple tv

Since getting the Apple TV2 1080P HD about 6months ago, I have had connectivity issues with the audio.
I have the apple tv connected to the tv via HDMI and Optical Audio
When I connect to the apple tv from my macbook the video always streams but sometimes (every 4-5) the audio stays on 'internal speakers'
When I hold 'option' and click on the sound control it shows Apple TV but when I click on it, it doesn't select it.
I then have to restart the computer or do a series of disconnecting and reconnecting until it works properly.
I couldn't find anyone else with this problem so I'm wondering if it my unit is isolated with this.
    Any help greatly appreciated

I downloaded an app LionAudioFix.. I've pinned it to the dock. This resets the audio.

For videos I've been using Beamer, I've been extremely happy and haven't had any audio/playback issues using this with the AppleTV. Video quality is top notch and you can use your computer while a video streams.
    Hope this helps you.

  • Own Videos on New Apple TV

Can you put your own videos on the new Apple TV?

It's worth clarifying that not everything that plays in iTunes automatically plays on AppleTV.
Video files in particular have to be in an AppleTV compatible format which for most purposes will mean h264 encoding.
I suggest the OP checks the specs here under video formats:
    http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html
You can often right click on an incompatible file in iTunes and get it to convert it to h264 format but the process can be time consuming.

  • Apple TV Video Conversion

So, I managed to successfully convert my whole DVD collection into Itunes. I am going to get an Apple TV  3rd generation soon. I noticed there was an option in Itunes to convert the movies for Apple TV format. Does this mean they will play in 1080 P once I get the Apple TV.
Thanks for the help on this.

Thanks for the help on this.
Discussion of DVD conversion is against forum terms and conditions.
Your specific question however relates to an iTunes feature.
That option will convert a non-AppleTV compatible video file playable by iTunes into one that is playable on AppleTVs.  SD will remain SD, and there's be little point reconevrting if already compatible as you'd lose quality.  If file not AppleTV compatible, then again not much point in my view in converting SD source to HD as you'll just get a larger file without any real new information.

  • Creating a single clip for video filter effect

I know this seems like an easy question but I am trying to create a sequence in which all of my clips appear as one clip so that I can fade a video effect in and out over the course of a a few minutes. I thought the answer was by nesting the files but when I do this there doesn't seem to be a way to access the viewer's filter controls to alter the amount of the effect that I want. I click on the nest and it sends me to the original sequence in which it only allows me to alter video filters clip by clip. Please let me know what I should be doing instead. Thanks in advance.

If you NEST the footage then if you CONTROL click on the nest you can select OPEN IN VIEWER. But personally I hate nesting...very messy. I would Mark IN, and OUT in the range you want, then export a Quicktime Movie, self contained...then reimport that.

  • Home movies freeze on AppleTV???

    Hi,
I have several home movies that are in .mp4 and .avi format.
I want to watch them on my AppleTV.
I've used Handbrake to convert the .avi files to .mp4.
I've tagged the all the files using MetaX or Subler - in the past I found that meta data added with Get Info in iTunes can sometimes be lost if the files is deleted  or copied to a new computer.
However, when I try to play the videos on AppleTV (either streaming from my iTunes library or copying it to AppleTV), a video either play for a second and then freeze up the AppleTV.
The remote can't work and I have to unplug the AppleTV to get it working again.
It has happened to me before and I would like to know what could cause this.
I've tried changing the files from .mp4 to .m4v but this doesn't help.
Does anyone know what might be causing this?
    Cheers in advance.

    There may be several causes.
RF interference can scupper wifi if using that (my microwave used to cause havoc when used!).
It's worth restarting router, AppleTv, computer and iTunes - not guaranteed to fix but sometimes helps.
Is it consistent with all content via Home sharing? Does stuff via the internet work ok?
