AppleTV and HDMI 1.3a?

I searched to see if anyone had asked this already and if they have i am sorry. I'm currently looking into buying a new home theater receiver that has HDMI 1.3a, will AppleTV support this format or is it only HDMI version 1.1 or 1.2? OR has has there been talk about an update for this? If someone can please answer this for me it would be be a great help, I've searched the net high and low for this answer and can't find it anywhere!

Search this forum for "HDMI 1.3" including the quotation marks (or whatever they're called), when you get to the results page, select the same search for this year, as there are some older articles.
Not sure if there's a definite answer to be found but you may glean some info from the older threads.

    Hey andrikos175,
Thanks for the question, and welcome to Apple Support Communities.
You are on the right track, you'll want to AirPlay these videos to your Apple TV. If you are having issue with AirPlay, please see the following troubleshooting resources:

Having problems connecting iMac(late 2006) running 10.7.5 to a Samsung Flat Screen TV using separate audio/speaker cable and HDMI standard cable, mini-DVI to HDMI video converter.  TV displays generic Apple galaxy background and "some" windows (e.g. screen resolution choices).   It does not show Mail or Safari menus.  System preferences'  display "gathered" the Samsung and chose its resolution.  I did not find a way to select the Samsung as my display.
In addition to having old hardware, we have Verizon FIOS providing internet and TV access.  Is there any way to make this work for us?  We would like to stream video (Netflix) and view shows from the Web.  Do we need Apple TV to do this?  Or is it not possible with our old iMac?  My husband thinks that our Airport could be a factor.
    Thank you

Lately, I have been seeing a lot of posts with users trying to use their Macs/iMacs to mirror their streaming video from their Macs to an HDTV.
There are, actually, many alternatives to choose from than just from a Mac.
You need to have or invest in a WiFi capable router for all of these examples.
Apple TV only integrates with WiFi and newer Mac hardware. So, if you want to have total integrated experience, if you have a 2011 Mac or newer, you might as well pay the $100 for the AppleTV box.
If you have a older Mac, like I have noticed many users do, then you have other options.
If you want to elimate long cable clutter and having your Mac at the mercy of your TV all of the time,  you can still use the AppleTV box independently or purchase cheaper alternative media streaming boxes from Roku, Sony, Boxee or any number of electronics manufacturers that now have media streaming boxes and media streaming capability built into DVD/Blu-ray players.
These eliminate long cable clutter by being close to the HDTV where shorter, less expensive cables can be used.
Another alternative for iPad users is to use an iPad with the USB/HDMI video adapter and use your iPad as the streaming box. This ties up your iPad in much the same way as it does with your Mac, but again the iPad can be close to the TV and use minimal cables to the TV.
Another alternative to is to use a combination of an iPad and your Mac to stream content that is only available to stream online from a computer. In this case, you can use a desktop remote app on your iPad and Mac. A good and cheap Desktop Remote app is Splashtop Remote. This allows you to completely connect your iPad remotely, over Wifi, to your iMac desktop. The app streams both video and sound to the iPad which is still connected to your HDTV. The resultant stream video picture will be smaller than the size of your HDTV, but it will still be plenty large enough to watch. Again, if you own a iPad and an Intel Mac, this method also allows minimal cabling to the TV.

  • Audio through RCA and HDMI not in sync

    Hi,
    Is this a common problem?
Recently got a tv with hdmi so the appletv is now connected with hdmi to the tv. But it is also still connected to my stereo though the rca connection (for music or movies with soundtracks that I really want to enjoy).
Problem with both music and movies is that the audio is not in sync between hdmi and rca. Hdmi is a bit delayed.
Now for music this is not that much of and issue as I usually have the tv off and use the iphone remote to select music on the appletv which plays then through the sereo. But for movies it is, I have to turn off the tv volume completely. It was much better to have the sound of the tv also on for dialogue, gave a more natural impression if it did not only come from the stereo. But with the delay it is just not good anymore.
    Any ideas, known problem? Fixable?
    Thanks,
    S.

Most modern TV's have an input lag during which various processing is applied to the video signal, and the TV audio will be delayed accordingly - the longer this delay the more you're likely to notice a discrepancy between RCA/optical and HDMI.
This is not the AppleTV's problem.
While you might want both audio outputs playing together it invariably causes problems.
Only if your amp has some kind of delay function on the input could you compensate by slowing teh audio from the amp.

  • Is an AppleTV and Wireless Router Needed for Mirroring Screen?

Is an AppleTV and a Wireless Router Needed for Mirroring from a desktop monitor to an HDTV?

    It is one way.
You can also use a mini Display Port to HDMI adapter, and an HDMI cable. A Thunderbolt to HDMI adapter works too.
You might be able to get away with an Apple TV and no WiFi router, if you use an Ethernet cable from the Mac to the Apple TV (never tried it, but it should work in theory).
You may even be able to use an adhoc network with an Apple TV and no WiFi router, but I think the setup would be annoying each time you wanted to mirror and you would give up internt access while the adhoc network was active.

  • AppleTV and HDCP error

I must say that I am very disappointed in how Apple is handling this. The company released a software update a while ago that included the HDCP or High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection to block the copying of audio and video content as it travels through the net. Due to this update, some of us AppleTV owners may have been experiencing errors while renting, buying or home sharing content through the device. The error is as follows: "This content requires HDCP for playback. HDCP isn't supported by your HDMI connection." Thinking to resolve the problem, I went and bought so far 4 different sets of HDMI cables to include an Apple branded HDMI cable and it did not work. Well, I thought it was going to be the TV since my TV's HDMI ports could not be updated, I went and bought a brand new TV which I did make sure that the ports were HDCP compatible and to my surprise it did not worked either. I reset the device to reinstall the software and nothing happened. This past weekend, I went to the Apple Store and they said, well lets erase and reinstall everything and it should work. The guy comes back and plugged it to a Sony TV where they have their demo AppleTV and it gave him the same error again. He said lets try it one more time and when he cam back the device would not even connect to the HDMI port. I am standing there asking for a replacement, which is fare enough due to the circumstances, and let me remind you that the circumstance is that my AppleTV as well as many others got damaged due to the software update not just normal usage and even though it was out of warranty by 80 days it was not my fault that the software update damaged it. Apple all they said was you either pay for the replacement or buy a new one. I was so angry that all I wanted to do was to throw the darn thing in the trash can in front of people in the mall so they know what's going on. I have always been a firm believer of apple but some times I question their way of doing business with the customers. Now I have a damaged AppleTV at home that I cant use not because of my own fault but because of a malfunction on the update and they make it seem as my fault. So if you are having this same problem, you can try anything, you can go to the Apple store and all I have to say is good luck. Thanks Apple....

    Here's how I've "FIXED" it.
Each time I want to watch the Apple TV, I "usually" have to unplug the power cord from the back of the Apple TV, then wait ~15 - 30 seconds, then plug it back in.
Restart takes abouta minute for the signal to be recognized by the TV.
Then all's set, until the next time i turn it on, then its pot luck from there.
AppleTV content, my photos streamed from an IPhone 4, content doesn't matter.
The HDMI cable "condition" is a hoax in my opinion.
When I do the update ( bought the AppleTV Gen 2, days after release ) I'll update if this has gone away.
FWIW, I got this with both the Gen 1 720 AND the Gen 2 1080 models, in different locations (states) and different TV manufacturers:  Sony LCD 1080 and Panasonic Plasma 720.
Software fix from Apple I suspect.

  • AppleTV and Panasonic, black screen

    Hi,
    I just bought a new Panasonic TV(Panasonic 42" LCD-TV TX-L42U3E), and a new AppleTV(black one).
When I first plugged in my AppleTV it just worked. After a few minutes I got a black screen, and from what I could understand the TV "lost" the AppleTV. Now the connections seems to be random, sometimes I have a connection for an hour, sometimes for just a few seconds.
I tried with different cables and the result is the same, however, when I try on a different TV, it works fine.
Any suggestions? Could it be the TV?

OK, went to Bestbuy and purchased a micro USB adapter cable. Hooked it up and after completely unplugging both the power and HDMI on the AppleTV; and plugging the USB into the ATV and my MacBook running iTunes did iTunes recognize the ATV. Ran the update and when it finished iTunes instructed to unplug USB and re-plug HDMI and power. After a number of minutes (? Didn't  time it) AppleTV was up and ready for setup of accounts and network. Seems to work  AOK now. Enjoy!

I just plugged my AppleTV and I only see a black screen and a beautifull white Apple...but cannot do anything...Any idea ?

What TV are you using? Is there anything else on the screen? Have you tried a different HDMI cable and port?

  • Just bought AppleTV and I'm getting 'No Signal' from Sony KDL TV

So I got an AppleTV (new) for Christmas and I'm attempting to hook it up to my Sony KDL tv using this cable (http://www.amazon.com/Aurum-Flat-Ethernet-Certified-Available/dp/B004LTQS1G/ref= sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1362340327&sr=1-1&keywords=Aurum+Flat+Series+-+ High+Speed+90+Degree+%28Right+Angle%29+Flat+HDMI+Cable+with+Ethernet+%2825+FT%29)
I'm getting a 'No Signal' screen from the Sony TV even though the TV recognizes there's something in the port.
    I've tried:
    Hard setting the AppleTV
    Switching HDMI ports
    and still nothing.
    What do I do?

    Check this guide:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1551?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
    Specifically:
If your TV screen appears fuzzy or black (you see no video)
Make sure the television you are using supports the Apple TV resolution requirements. Please see the Apple TV technical specifications.
When you connect power, check to make sure the LED turns on. If the LED is not on, then verify with a known good power outlet or connect something else to the outlet you're using for Apple TV and make sure it works (such as a lamp or clock).
Make sure you're using the correct video cables and that they are connected firmly to Apple TV and to your TV.
Connect the HDMI cable directly into the Apple TV and your television, remove any third party devices or adapters.
Make sure the input setting you've selected on your TV matches the input you have your video cables connected to. See the documentation that came with your TV for more information.
Change the Apple TV resolution by pressing and holding the Menu and Up button for six seconds. The Apple TV will automatically cycle to the next resolution at approximately 20 second intervals. Pressing the Selectbutton will immediately cycle to the next resolution.
If you are connected via HDMI, try unplugging and replugging your HDMI cable.
If HDMI isn't working on an Apple TV (1st generation), try component cables instead (and disconnect the HDMI cable temporarily). Read more about HDMI vs component video.

  • Airplay slow between AppleTV and late 2013 MacBook Pro w/Mavericks

I recently bought a nice new (expensive) MacBook Pro (late 2013). Also bought an AppleTV and was looking forward to using AirPlay so I could use my TV as a screen for my new MacBook. The setup of the MacBook and the AppleTV was uneventful, but when I went to connect to AirPlay I had very poor performance. Many times I could not get AirPlay to even show up on the AppleTV. Very frustrating...
I checked Google and Apple Forums for this issue but couldn't really find anything helpful.
I checked for updates on both the Mac and the AppleTV and both were up-to-date so I tried restoring the AppleTV. The restore process downloaded and reinstalled the latest AppleTV updates but still no love.
Keep in mind this is all over WiFi. I checked the status of the wireless network on the AppleTV and it had 5 bars (good signal strength). Then I thought about checking the configuration of the WiFi. I have a Cisco/LinkSys EA2700 Router/WiFi Access Point. I logged in and check out the configuration of the WiFi. Under the Wireless->Wireless Settings page I found that the 5 MHz WiFi had an option for 'Channel Width' this has three settings, Auto (the default) 20MHz only and 40Mhz only. I am assuming that the AppleTV and the MacBook prefer the 5MHz network if available.
My thought at this point was that streaming HDMI over WiFi is probably going to need a lot of bandwidth, I changed the option from Auto to 40MHz Only to force the WiFi to use as much radio frequency carrier bandwith as possible (hope that's not too technical). I set this option, restarted the router and BAM everything started working. The connection was almost immediate and the streaming was fantastic. I tested it by starting NetFlix in a browser and put it on the TV (yes I know Netflix has an app on AppleTV. This was just a simple performance test to see if there was in latency or frame loss. None, it worked flawlessly.
I wanted to post this because as I said I really couldn't find anything that helped get this problem resolved. I hope that this helps others.

  • TS2709 I have AppleTV and Ipad2 running VJay app to my TV over a private cisco router disabled firewall but I keep loosing the video on my TV after a few minutes what can I do?

I have AppleTV and Ipad2 running VJay app to my TV over a private cisco router disabled firewall but I keep loosing the video on my TV after a few minutes what can I do?

I also get this problem on my iPad, so probably not related to the AppleTV. On the iPad I restarted Airport Extreme this time, and then the iPad saw my Home Sharing.
So to recap, restarting the router or Airport Express allowed the iPad and AppleTV to see Home Sharing. Restarting AppleTV also allows AppleTV to see Home Sharing.
So does anyone have any idea?
    Thanks

  • Can i use both Component video and HDMI?

    Hi guys,
Im wondering if its possible to connect both Component video and HDMI on the ATV?
Its currently connected to HDMI on our main HD TV, however, the apartment we have has a strange setup in which you must send RF signals to a loop back in the main room to reach all other TV's.
We dont have the capital for either another flatscreen TV or a second Apple TV until next year - so currently we've got an older (see 2004) bulk of a CRT TV upstairs and my thought was i could route a signal to the RF loop back from the ATV and use my iphone remote to control what it plays to view upstairs.
For this id need a component to composite/rf convertor which ive found so sending the signal is no problem, but what would happen if i were to connect component cables as well as the HDMI, does the ATV output on both, or priortise the HDMI?

When both types of cable are connected to the tv at the same time, the HDMI connection will be on by default but the component is turned off... and what happens if the source to the HDMI cable is off - eg its plugged in but its got no where to send the signal, would it still not send to the component?.. You mean if the tv was off, same thing, HDMI would take precedence.
Are you sure about this, Winston? I have only 2 component (and 2 HDMI) inputs on my Panasonic HDTV. For this reason I invested in an Audio Authority Component Switcher (Model 1154A) a few years ago. When the TV device arrived I connected it directly to the HDTV via my HDMI-2 HDTV input and also connected the component video and optical audio to the switcher. I have no problem using the HDTV's input selector to switch back and forth between component and HDMI lines. While I admit I cannot split the screen between an HDMI input and anything else for simultaneous viewing, I can leave both lines plugged in and switch between the two lines. In addition, the activity light on the switcher indicates there is a signal present on the switcher even when I am watching the HDMI line. (Of course, this may simply be triggered by the switcher's optical audio signal since I normally watch the TV video via the HDMI line (with HDMI audio muted) and use the optical audio line to drive my receiver's AC3 decoder so I can enjoy 5.1 audio with my latest conversions.) Am, therefore, wondering if the OP may have the same capability and could then simply switch to a different input mode to "de-negotiate" his HDMI connection and allow access to whatever component device he needs as long as he doesn't need simultaneous viewing on both TVs.

  • After upgrading to mountain lion I cannot use my HD TV as a display through my thunder port and HDMI cable ???

after upgrading to mountain lion I cannot use my HD TV as a display anymore using thunderport and HDMI , which worked before , does this mean I have to buy apple tv to mirror onto my HD TV

can it be something related to wi-fi?  I have read other posts talking about loss of connection using wifi.  I'm connecting my G5 through an airport express which is expanding my wifi generated from my Apple Time Capsule. It is quite difficult for me to relocate the server close to the Time Capsule and vice versa but if it works, at least that would be something.  It was working with Lion about 3 months ago - showing up in Finder, etc.

  • I have the latest AppleTV and Ipad, I cannot get home sharing.

I have the latest AppleTV and Ipad. I cannot get home sharing working, all settings are correct but nothing happens. I returned to the apple store who connected TV box directly to network with cable and home sharing worked between the 2 devices.
I went home and switched on, it worked (both on wifi). Next day tried again, thinking it was all there and nothing.
I tried the tips on the community pages without success. I called Apple helpline, they ran through all my settings which were correct, but still nothing, after 2/3 days they called me back to tell me to wait for Apple software update to solve this problem !!
is something happening on this issue, please can someone tell me. On my old Ipad I just used a Component cable, but this will not work with the new pad, I got the adaptor plug and nothing happens, no output.
Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I'd have to Agree, You checked on iTunes to make sure it was Turned on? Check your Router make sure it's working incase, cause sometimes it's the little Things that make it not work.

    Hi,
I tried everythink, but same as before!
    - droppings ot the main screen
    - loosing Home Share
    now even on iPads !
    Frustrating!
I'm now more than convinced that this is caused by the latest iTunes version.
As some others stated in other threads .... it seems that Apple doesn't really take care of this problem. So what if, if we could make them feeling the same pain as we do. ... Just by dropping them a mail as soon as we have the problem again. Not more often, we don't want to be unfair, but everytime it happens.
I found this feedback site http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html
I will start now with this.... maybe this will help to rise a little bit of attention
    Tweety
This is the mailbody I always use
    Hello all,
Since the last update to iTunes Version 10.6.1 (7) streaming content (Movies and TV shows) to Apple TVs and iPads has two major problems:
    - Home Sharing is lost during streaming (streaming stops even if a large portion of the content is already preloaded)
    - streaming stops and the main screen pops up (Home Sharing still available)
This happens sometime after some minutes, sometimes after several hours, but it surely happens.
I followed every advice I could found on this support website. There are now a lot of threads following this issue.
Sometimes it seems getting better, but hours later the same isues occured again. Watching content on this enviroment is a real pain and very frustrating.
As many others I'm now convinced that the latest update of iTunes caused this problem.
Our family enviroment contains the following Apple products:
    - iTunes on a Win7 32 bit Noname PC (all content)
    - second iTunes on a iMac with OS 10.6.8 (all content)
    - third iTunes on a MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.8 (daughter, only selected content)
    - fourth iTunes on a Win7 32 Samsung Notebook (son, only selected content)
    - all iTunes sharing the same Home Sharing ID
    - 2 Apple TV second generation
    - 1 Apple TV first generation
    - 2 iPod touch (bought last year)
    - 2 iPads (second generation)
all firmware or software are on latest available patchlevel.
At this moment, I can not recomend to others to buy this products.
I will drop this feedback everytime my famiily and I facing this problem... just to help you to get a better feeling of the urgency of this issue.
Thanks for every effort in advanced.
