AppleTV and iTunes without Leaving Computer On All The Time/NAS iTunes Server

I begrudge having to leave my iMac on all the time just so now and again I can play music, pictures and video from it through AppleTV. My iMac is 2 floors up from the AppleTV, and as there is no wake on LAN working (I can't get it to work if there is (I have Lion)) I don't want to go up there to turn the Mac on when I want to use AppleTV.
So I have read some articles about iTunes servers on NAS drives and wondered if that would be a good solution, anyone try them?
If I did have my iTunes library on a NAS drive with an iTunes server, when I start iTunes on my iMac will it then load the iTunes Library as it does now like if it was a local library? So I can still manage it in the same way as I do on my Mac.
I assume then I could have another computer use the same library on the NAS? (although wont do it the same time due to conflicts)
I have iCloud/Match so not so bothered about music as I can play from the Cloud (although its hit ad miss sometimes), but I have videos and pictures I stream to AppleTV so they are more important. I don't want to have a computer left on all the time so I can use AppleTV.
If this is not possible, then I am thinking of getting a Macbook for the lounge, but then I don't want to have to plug/unplug my external hard drives into it all the time, which I am likely to swap with the main iMac too.
Thanks a lot

P.S. I only play music from iCloud as my iMac is not on. So if I can stream to AppleTV without having a computer on, then I would do that to be faster, work all the time, and save bandwidth.

  • Is there a way to put a large amount of music on your iPod without having to keep all the files in iTunes on your computer as well? I want to put my entire music collection (including cds) on my iPod but don't want to take up the space on my computer.

is there a way to put a large amount of music on the ipod without having to keep all the files on itunes as well? I want to use my ipod as an externa drive and put all of my music on it without taking up the space on my computer. I also don't want to lose all my files everytime I plug ipod into my computer. Is this possible? Is there a way to avoid using itunes and only use the ipod as an external drive?

You cannot put music onto your iPod without using iTunes, that what iTunes is for.
It's also not a good idea to wipe the music from your computer and having it only on your iPod. We see countless posts here from people who have done just that - and then lost everything when the iPod needs a Restore. Even if you never need to Restore your iPod, what happens when you eventually replace the iPod? You'll be back here asking how to get the music from one iPod to another. That's not easy to do, we see countless posts about that too!
A much better idea is to buy an external drive (a proper external drive, not simply an iPod) and put your large amount of music onto that drive. Then point your iTunes Library to that drive. However, you need to remember two things:
You still need a backup of that Library.
Using an external drive as your iTunes Library means that the drive must be connected and ready to read before starting your iTunes programme. If it isn't, then iTunes will look on the C: drive - and you will find no music in your Library. (Once again, lots of posts about that as well!)

  • Can I leave my computer on all the time?

I just bought a Magic Jack which allows me to make telephone calls by turning my USB drive into a phone jack. However, my computer must always be on in order to receive and make phone calls. Is it harmful to my computer to leave it on all the time?

Can I leave it on 24/7 without putting it in sleep mode? Pros? Cons? Will screen saver be enough to save the monitor? Will I notice it on my electricity bill?
    Barry,
Sure that's no problem. To make the change go to System Preferences - Energy Saver - Computer Sleep - Never - set the Display Sleet to the desired setting.
I'd also recommend check the box that says *Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible*
Pro's your problem will go away
Con's none really. you electric bill increase should be a matter of pennies, check it over the next couple of months after making the change. I've always set my iMac to this setting and find it works perfectly.

After upgrading to 11.0.5.5 can't access iTunes store. Temprorarily unavailable all the time. Nothing helps, tried to flash the DNS. Nothing.....

Same issue.  I emailed apple and they had me call apple.  Not really any help.  Did all the troubleshooting listed and to have further help diagnosing problems it isn't free.  I explained to the rep that I have seen others having same issues - he didn't know anything about.  This is first time I have had problems.  I can't even purchase song on my PC but can on my iphone.  I just would like to be able to access my account.  Afraid to sign out of itunes in case I can't even get to my library etc.

I sometimes have blue and red square-shaped dots appear on my MBP; especially but not exclusively when I'm watching videos.  The dots don't stay in the same place; and also they are not there all the time.  Also, sometimes my animations (applications opening, windows being dragged, etc.) will glitch as well.  Again, this is not a continual thing; it just happens variously throughout my day.  MBP Model A1212, OS X 10.6.8, 2.33 Ghz 3GB RAM.

Did the original songs that do not appear on the car player play in the Music app on the iPod? Sometimes glitches happen and they do not. Also, If y ohave a 5G iPod/iOS 7, purchase songs  will show with an cloud icon by them if they are not downloaded if Shall All is turned on in Settings>iTunes and App Store

  • Time capsule, do i need to leave this on all the time?

hi folks just got a new time capsule drive, and set it up, however i am not sure whether or not i should leave it on all the time? or switch it off when not in use?
does the hdd drive power down when idle?
    cheers

hi folks just got a new time capsule drive, and set it up, however i am not sure whether or not i should leave it on all the time? or switch it off when not in use?
The Time Capsule (TC), like most networking equipment, is designed to operate 24x7. However, you can power it down when not in use for either Internet access, file/print sharing, or Time Machine backups.
does the hdd drive power down when idle?
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it goes into "sleep" mode when there is no disk activity after a certain period of time.

  • IPod classic won't turn off when plugged into a home theater dock; what's up? will it hurt to leave it on all the time?

I bought a new iPod Classic and it won't turn off when plugged into a home theater dock. Is this normal and will it hurt the iPod if i leave it on all the time?

    Hi there,
How old is your Classic? Often, after a couple of years, rechargable batteries begin to fail, especially after such a long period of inactivity. This happens with any gadget with this type of battery.
Try leaving it plugged in for 24 hours, and try again, to rule out that it isn't just really low on charge. If this doesn't help, it may be a good time to buy a replacement. New iPod Nanos and Touches will be released this October.
Below, I've linked to an Apple website which explains rechargable batteries, and why yours may not be working.

I hope this helps, and I hope upgrading your device will not feel like an unnecessary expense. Let me know if you have any more questions,
    Nathan

Hello! I have a huge question about how can I get connected my iphone 4 with my car Is there any opption on find my car application? I have a Volvo xc60 and I want to be connected all the time with my iphone. Can I do that?

Hello. I can say that you have a quite strange „huge question”… It’s non-sense to stay connected with your car which is hundreds miles away. Unless…
I have a theory. You don’t want to controll your car, you want to controll somebody who is driving the car. Volvo XC 60 is a nice family car, usually used by married men between age of 35-45, probably with small children, so it’s very unlikely that you want to controll your teanage kid, mainly because probably even if you would give him/her to drive the car in the neighborhoud, I don’t think that he/she would be „several hundred miles away”…  If your child is not young teneage anymore, and he/she has his/her own life, but you want to control him/her, that is sick… So I am convinced that you want to controll your husband who probably travelling often! Am I wright?
Isnt’t nice at all! Would you like if you would be monitorized in such way? I bet you don’t!
Anyway, iPhone is smart, you can use for many things, but come on, you really were thinking that there is such kind of application???
What could you do it's to put in the car a GPS survelling system, however I don't think that you could do it without your husband knowledge, otherwise he won't be able to start the engine...

  • I have a mac osx and want to use a magic jack without the computer on all the time.

I am trying to use a magic jack plus without plugging into my mac.  (It will work plugged directly into the computer but I bought it so I would not have to keep my mac on all the time to use the phone).
What do I need to get a separate modem.  I am on air port express (an old one)

It appears that Magic Jack installs software on your system that it needs to run. Look at some of the threads in "More Like This" on the righthand side of this page or look here:

  • Can I leave Powerbook on all the time and music pauses when disc ejects.

I have had an imac at home for the last 4 years and always left it asleep when not using it so I could acces my itunes quickly. I have just upgraded to a Pbook G4 17" and am concerned now that I may not be able to leave it on. I read Apples guide to battery use and they say not to leave it plugged in all the time. I thought this was a machine that could be used all the time? Am i safe to leave it plugged in asleep through the day and night with say 3 to 4 hours use in the evening?
Also, when listening to itunes and i eject a disc the music pauses for a moment. I use a G5 at work and my old imac never did this. Someone I work with has the same Pbook but 15" and hers doesnt pause.
Can any one help with these 2 issues? Love my Pbook but these couple of things are taking the shine off it. Thanks for an informative forum.

It is OK to leave your PowerBook on (plugged in) but remember to use your battery once in a while. Lithium-based batteries have to be used. Fully discharging and recharging the battery every two weeks should be OK.
An alternative is removing your battery with a 50% charge. Apple suggests this if you don’t plan on using your battery for more than six months.

  • Do i have to leave my computer on all the time

do you have to have the computer, where you i tunes is located, on all the time?
If I don't, Apple TV doesn't keep the photos i've allowed to be shared on Itunes, and i have to restore it.
I am getting tired of restoring my apple t.v.. I want to go back to Roku.
    Tell me why I shouldn't.

If you are using home sharing then yes. Only photos used for the screensaver are temporarily cached, nothing else is stored. There is no need to restore the unit in order to view photos from your computer's library.
