AppleTV Connections

Can an AppleTV3 be connected to a Sony A/V Receiver with the HDMI cable via Video 1 and not directly to a TV?

Yes, AppleTVs can be connected to AV receivers via HDMI.
I would however add that AppleTV has been quite fickle about HDMI connections over the years.
It should work but occasionally there are compatibility issues.

  • Will Appletv connect to Sony tv RM-YDO14

Will AppleTV connect to Sony TV model RM-YDO14?  Have tried all 3 HDMI inputs and I can't get the Apple setup screen.  Is there more than one type of HDMi cable?

That's too bad.  Read the article from which the thread was started and follow the troubleshooting steps provided.

  • New AppleTV connecting to 4 year old reciever

Just purchased the 2nd generation AppleTV and found that the receiver on my 4 year old Sony home theater system only has one optical audio port. That port is currently used for the Comcast set-top box. I am thinking of trying an optical audio splitter on the receiver's port. The AppleTV and set-top box would share the same input on the receiver. Is this the best solution or would there be a more effective solution? Thanks for your help!

    hi,
there is a 2nd way for getting audio out of the apple tv: hdmi. your tv/display may have an audio output which you may connect to your receiver. your tv would work as an audio pass-through device.
    hope that helps,

  • AppleTV connection question.

I have a widescreen Sony TV.
My Cable Box is connected to one set of the component ports.
My DVD player is connected to the other set of the component ports.
My VHS player is connected to the S video ports.
And since the set is 2 and a half years old it does not have a HMDI port.
So where do I connect my AppleTV?
Surely, I am not the only person with a cable box, dvdplayer, and vhs player connected to their televisions?
Do I have to disconnect my DVD player?
My DVI port is not in use, btw.
Any thoughts as to how I can make all this work?

You could get an HDMI to DVI cable... Alternatively, you could get a switcher box, too. I got one at Radio Shack awhile back that would switch to the right input when the power button on the remote for that input was pressed.

  • AppleTV Connected/Won't Turn On

I'm trying to connect and use AppleTV on my SONY TV.  All connections were made as per instructions.  Using the AppleTV Remote, I can't seem to turn on AppleTV and have it show on my SONY Screen.

Is the white LED on the front of the AppleTV  illuminated? If it's off you won't be able to see it. The LED is an AppleTV's only overt sign of life, other than the signal carried by its HDMI cable to your TV. VoiceOver audio will speak to you and provide setup instructions, even if you can't see any video.
It sounds as though you may need to tell your TV to use that input.
If it's brand new you can certainly contact Apple and have them walk you through its setup. It's free. To contact Apple use the Contact Us link below.

  • AppleTV connected to Mac Pro by 802.11n,  G5 on Ethernet can't see AppleTV

I hope someone can answer this one... In my house, I have an Apple Airport Extreme base station set up and broadcasting an open 802.11n (b and g compatible) wireless network. Connected to that network is my Mac Pro, which can see my AppleTV, and is set as its main source. Just to be clear, the AppleTV is connecting to the Airport Extreme base station, and NOT directly to my Mac Pro, by some kind of ad-hoc network.
My wife has a Power Mac G5, which is connected to the same Airport Extreme base station, via Ethernet, and it cannot see the AppleTV. I have iTunes 7.1.1 and Quicktime 7.1.5 installed, and I have iTunes set to search for AppleTV units, but no Apple TV is ever displayed by her iTunes.
I have the firewall on the PowerMac shut off, and have even tried messing with the Ethernet connection speed settings in Network System Prefs.
Has anybody else experienced anything like this? Does anybody have any good advice on how to fix it? I have done everything short of reset my AppleTV and Airport Extreme, and I really don't want to have to do that, then set my network back up.
    Thanx!

So, you're saying that the AppleTV will only ever appear in the list of available AppleTV devices on the initial host copy of iTunes?!Yes, once the "host" is selected. However, according to another poster, it should appear in the list of all LAN connected platforms when you initiate the "Connect to New Itunes" action and then disappear from non-selected iTunes lists once a selection is made.
If so, how do you add additional sources.Normally as explained previously. However, this assumes your wife's connection to the LAN was properly made. Can, for instance, the TV device see her computer as a "streaming" source?
I go through the 'Connect to New iTunes' option, and the authentication number appears on my TV screen, but nothing ever indicates that my wife's Power Mac has recognized the AppleTV, or vice versa. If the device doesn't show up in her iTunes at this point, I would likely try turning off the Airport card in your Mac Pro and see if this makes a difference. (I assume here that when you say the TV is connected to your mac Pro via the Airport Extreme, you mean wirelessly and not via an ether connection between extreme and TV since anything plugged into the TV ether connector would override any wireless connection attempts. (As a double check, you can look at your Settings > Network page on the TV.) Since I only have one computer/TV combination and it is such a pain switching back and forth between wired and wireless connections, I just leave mine connected by a Cat 6 cable I already had. Basically, everyone on your LAN needs to connect wirelessly or everyone nees to connect wired since you can't mix connections to the TV. In any case, if you cannot see/connect her computer with TV when yours is "disconnected," then would concentrate efforts here as it would appear she has a network problem.

  • Appletv connected by dvi to old tv gets no audio

I realise my old TV - hd ready and all is not great for the AppleTV2 but its all i got. It connects via hdmi to dvi cable but no sound. what next.. i can get use the optical audio out from teh appletv2 to the tv but i have no optical audio in!!

I too have just bought an Apple TV to work with an older TV and have no audio.
I've successfully linked up the ATV HDMI-out port with the TV's DVI-in port with a simple cable. The video is fine. I've also connected a Toslink optical cable between the ATV and the TV's optical-in port. But still no sound. Using the settings menu I've turned off Dolby and set the audio to 16 bit and no improvement. The cable is brand new and I can see red light coming out of the end when it's plugged into the ATV.
    Any suggestions?

    Hey specialeddie,
Check out the following directions to be able to AirPlay Mirror your iPhone 5 to your Apple TV:
To enable AirPlay Mirroring on your iOS 7 device:
Connect your iOS device and your Apple TV to the same Wi-Fi network.
Swipe up from the bottom of your screen to access Control Center.
Tap AirPlay. You should now see available Apple TVs.
Tap the name of the Apple TV you wish to AirPlay to, then tap Mirroring. Once enabled, your iOS device's screen will be mirrored on your Apple TV.

My apple tv presently is not connecting to iTunes despite having a network connection any ideas if the service is down?

  • AppleTV connectivity

    Hi,
last questions concerning the wireless streaming from AppleTV to HDTV:
my desktop computer is in the basement, the HDTV is on the next floor above, the house is built according to North-American standards, i.e., lots of wood and plasterboard, and in the house I use a cordless phone system.  Is there any factor that could negatively affect streaming?  What do I have to pay attention to when operating the above mentioned set-up so streaming media remains trouble free?  What is the most efficient reception range for AppleTV?  By the way, I plan to purchase the latest AppleTV device.  Can someone please answer this query?  Thank you!
    Frank

Wood and plasterboard are OK a 2.4 Ghz wifi network shouldn't have much of an issue. Cordless phones may interfere with 2.4 Ghz, 5 Ghz may be better at avoiding interference from cordless phones but it doesn't reach as far and doesn't penetrate walls as well.

  • Solved: My AppleTV connectivity issue

I have a Take1 ATV and after a while it would not connect to my iTunes library for any reason: wired through a switch, direct wired via crossover, wireless, I tried all the prescribed fixes from here to Cathay - nothing. netstat-a showed good listening ports. I have an Asus P5E-something mobo with a Nvidia NForce4 chipset and the notorious Nvidia Ethernet drivers. My system is perfectly clean from garbageware. Well, after installing a 3Com PCI NIC and a crossover to my ATV it instantly showed up! It is syncing now... NForce owners beware!

  • My AppleTV won't connect to iTunes library after RDP session

I use a computer to hosts a few different services.  First, the computer acts as my media server.  iTunes has all of my media loaded up and my AppleTVs connect to it to stream media.  I also use this machine to host remote desktop sessions when I am away from home.  It appears that after an RDP session, I am unable to connect to the iTunes library using my AppleTVs.  I need to restart iTunes to get connectivity back.
Has anyone had any prior experience with this or have any suggestions for a fix?

    Lisa,
I have pretty much the same problem.  My Mac (7 days old) was working with the Apple TV just fine but tonight it will not do AirPlay nor will Apple TV play home share with the Mac either. Rebooting has no effect.  Same error you are getting.   When I try to play music (AirPlay) it is weak and intermittent at best and often simply does not play at all.
My ASUS laptop still works just fine as normal so Apple TV seems to be working just fine.   Now I am wondering why I spent so much money on the Mac.

  • Airplay over ethernet connected Apple TV does not work

    Hey guys,
    I really appreciate your help!
    So here is my problem:
I cannot use Airplay from my iPad/iPhone or my Macbook (iTunes + AirPlay Mirroring) while the AppleTV connection is via ethernet.
If I disconnect the ethernet cable and activate wifi, there is no problem at all. But I want to use my AppleTV wired due to reasons like stability and performance.
I have a Hitron Router, which is only working as a Modem. My real routing device is an Apple Time-Capsule. It works as a DHCP and NAT. The NAT of the Hitron Router is disabled, it only sends the internet connection and no networking stuff.
Activating/Deactivation of the WMM Box doesn't work for me, because the Time Capsule doesn't provide such settings.
I am sorry for my English.
Hope you guys understand my problem.
    Thanks!

Thank you Rudegar. The problem was that the Time-Capsule did not automatically forward the TCP/UDP Ports to the wired connections or the other way around. For all those who read this thread later and have the same problem. You don't have to change all the TCP/UDP Ports on your own. The Time-Capsule and AirPort Extreme support the NAT Port Mapping Protocol, which automatically does the Port Forwarding.
A small research on Google did the rest, so it was easier than I thought.
Again thank you Rudegar for your answer
    Best regards!

  • Very Odd Problem connecting to network please help

Ok so I have had my Macbook Pro for a while and I have both an Airport Extreme and an Airport Express in my room. So until recently I could turn on my computer and my Airport would automatically connect to the internet. Now recently I turn on or open my computer and I can still see my network but I cannot connect to it. I have restarted all the devices and my computer, but the only thing that eventually logs me on (after anywhere between 5 minutes - an hour) is waiting. But the second I close my laptop I will get booted off the Internet and I cannot connect again.
However I can still see the network I just cannot connect to it.
Also another problem I have noticed is that when in Network Setup Assistant it asks me for the password for the network, and I have entered this password many times in my life for my iPhone and for my other devices. And yet recently when I input the correct password (ive tried over 100 times) I get a message saying that the password is incorrect, when I know for a fact that I am putting the right password in.
If anyone could please help me I would be very grateful.

The Airport Extreme base station has 2 passwords, one for logging into the router, the other for your network access (assuming you have security switched on). Just make sure you are trying to enter the correct password (I know this sounds obvious and no offense is meant).
If you added the Extreme to your other router, make sure in Airport utility the Extreme is set to Bridge Mode, this will remove any incompatibility issues with 2 devices trying to obtain IP addresses from your ISP. Only one router should connect to your ISP, using password, username and relevant settings, the other is a bridge for your internal network allowing faster transfers between devices connected to say for example your extreme.
I have a Netgear DG834PN modem/router which is assigned control to connect to my ISP (as it is a modem, the Extreme Base Station isn't a modem). The Apple Extreme is connected through ethernet to the Netgear. I have all my 802.11g/b/a devices connected through the Netgear wireless network (2.4Ghz) and all my 802.11n devices connected through the Apple Extreme Base Station wireless network ('n' only @5Ghz). I also have my Mac Pro and my AppleTV connected through gigabit ethernet (through the Extreme ethernet). Everything works well. AppleTV and Mac Pro sync very quickly, my MacBook Pro connects to other computers or devices (AppleTV for streaming content) within the Apple Extreme network, wired or wireless, and allows fast transfer speeds, especially with no g/b/a devices slowing things up.
I also have a USB hub connected to the Extreme with USB printer attached and additional external storage connected, both available throughout the Extreme network to either wired or wireless devices.
It sounds a bit complicated but it is really easy to do.
