AppleTV/itunes movie art

One for the pros here!
I have several movie files in itunes that are syncd to my ATV, some are home movies, some are DVD rips etc - ALL are in the correct MP4/AAC format etc.
Here's the problem....
When i opt-i to edit the info, i can navigate around the info pane, add comments and artwork to my selected movie etc as normal, however, when i hit ok, i get the beachball and eventually after several minutes i hit force quit and find that itunes has stopped responding.
So, i force quit itunes, and when i open it back up the movie file that i was editing no longer plays in IT or ATV, and i have to delete/re-import/re-sync.

depending on how the big the actual file is, it could take quite a few minutes to rewrite the tags.
when you force quit the process, you corrupted the file as it was re-writing it.
patience, it will update the tags but you need to leave it for it to finish. it might look like it has hung, but it actually hasn't.

My husband actually ordered this movie on Saturday to watch Sunday night and when we went to watch it it still needed to download. I would like to get a refund for this movie.

That's exactly what does happen, the movie is downloaded and at the point the Apple TV calculates that enough has downloaded that the rest can download while playing without catching up with itself and stopping, it starts the movie.

It very likely is your internet connection, the reason you see different loading times from different sources is because the movies are of different qualities, HD iTunes movies are up to 10 times the size of netflix movies and consequently can take up to 10 times longer to download.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.

It only needed downloading again because you had either used the Apple TV for something else or allowed it to be turned off, both of which erase anything on its drive. If you don't have sufficient bandwidth to your internet connection either order SD movies or download to your computer for viewing later.

You don't use Airplay. You set up Home Sharing on both and under the Computers section of AppleTV you'll then find it under Movies (or Rentals if rented), assuming it's in a compatible format.

Apple TV - watch iTunes movie using gift card credits.

What process do I need to use to rent an iTunes movie, pay for with gift card credits and watch on Apple TV? Can I do it directly from the Apple TV? Windows iTunes and current model of Apple TV.

For me I just load up the credit in iTunes on a computer or iPhone/iPad. When I rent/buy on AppleTV the store credit is used before the linked credit card, you just don't see the store credit on AppleTV. Occasionally peopel have had the cc debited but if that happened I'd contact iTunes Store support and get them to sort it out.

Lately, when I play a song from a newly imported cd, itunes moves the song to another location. The song is still in the main list but it is no longer with the rest of the album. Any ideas?

I have experienced this as well. Usually it is something simple in the metadata that iTunes recognizes as different. Try selecting all the songs at once in that album and get info on multiple tracks. At that point you can mark them as part of a compilation. The article below walks you through this process.

Better Control of the Sync Process of the AppleTV / iTunes

The Question : How to I tell AppleTV to sync when I want it to ?
Reason : When I start to edit my playlists in iTunes and change the selections under the TABs of my AppleTV, iTunes / AppleTV tries to sync right away vice waiting for me to tell it when to sync (there is a button for that, pointing to it 'Sync').

Is sort of annoying. Not sure if it can be changed. I known when I download movies and put them in iTunes it tries to sync and I wait for it to try and I click the little X in the status window to stop it. Reason being, I want to first add the Artwork and set some other tags. Then I go hit the manual sync button.
I agree it is a bit of a pain.

Movie art will not display

On movies I have created, iTunes shows a frame shot of the movie. I have gone to "info" and added the movie art I want. It seems to upload fine, and even displays on the info homepage. However on the movie list in iTunes I still see the frame shot. Any ideas?

Movie Art not showing for synced movies, only for streamed ones

Movie art is shown correctly in iTunes and while streaming, but not on the movies synced (these show poster frame). The only 'movies' that show correctly their movie art in iTunes, streaming and synced are TV Shows, which has lead me to think that the size of the .m4v has something to do. I have to do tests to determine the posible size limit, but for now all the TV Shows have a file size less than 2GB. I'll try to do some testing as soon as work allows me to get back to a normal life, (T_T)

Back again with some initial findings:
1. Size of the file does not matters. It shows the poster frame for .m4v files of any size.
2. Taking again into account your post, I checked every detail between the ripped TV shows and the ripped DVD movies and everything was the same except one small detail: audio settings. The ripped TV shows had an original Dolby Surround soundtrack, so I encoded them choosing the 'Dolby Surround' audio mix setting in the encoding program while with the ripped DVD movies that had an original Dolby Digital 5.1 I choose the '6 Channel Discrete' AAC 5.1 audio mix.
Noticing this difference, I tried encoding one of the previous movies that had the movie art issue using the same settings, but changing the audio mix setting from '6 Channel Discrete' AAC 5.1 to 'Dolby Pro Logic II'. Imported it to iTunes, applied the Movie cover art, synced with the Apple TV and there was the movie art in the Appke TV.
I'm gonna try again with different movies, but it seems, preliminarily, that the AAC 5.1 encoding setting does something to how the Apple TV sees the movie art in the file tags even though iTunes sees it alright.
I'll let you know what results come out of my tests.

IPhoto slideshow different screensize in iTunes movies

I'm thinking of purchasing AppleTV soon with the intention of showing slideshows on the one eyed monster in the lounge.
With this in mind I've been exporting my slideshows from iPhoto to
iTunes movies via Movies folder.
The problem is that the screensize of the slideshows are not widescreen when played on my G5 through iTunes (black border down each side).
When exporting from iPhoto I use the large (640x480) movie size, is this correct?
Any thoughts much appreciated.

You don't need to do this conversion at all. AppleTV can sync with iPhoto and has its own slideshow function, complete with transitions.

Performed the AppleTV update yesterday. Haven't had a problem since...though it's only been one day. Am I just hopelessly optimistic to think that AppleTV just needed to be updated to match iTunes and iOS for home sharing and airplay?

Let us know how you go as i'm having the same issue also. I upgraded to yosemite and itunes 12 at the same time and thought the OS upgrade was the issue. I downgraded back to Mavericks again (for lots of reasons i won't go in to here) thinking this would fix the problem but it didn't.
When i play any video content from itunes 12 in full screen goes dark once the controls fade away. QT, appletv or anything else plays them perfectly, as per itunes 11!

I want to stream my itune movies to my TV via a UK Skybox - can this be done?

I have connected the Skybox to the Samsung HD LED TV via an ethernet cable (as discussed by the Samsung manual) and the tv M-Player now recognises my MB Pro and allows me to view photos (iphoto) on my MB and itunes mucic. WRT movies however, the M-Player tells me the codex is not supported. Any suggestions, the TV is only 12 months old?

Just in case you're not familiar with it, the Apple TV isn't actually a TV, but a small box which connects to your TV and your wireless (or ethernet) network and enables you to play media from your iTunes Library on the television, or stream movies etc which you rent from the iTunes Store.

It's possible to get an adaptor from your Mac's video output to an HDMI socket so that your TV can mirror the Mac's display - you can then watch iTunes movies full screen on the TV. It's a lot cheaper than the Apple TV but more of a fiddle if the computer is some way away from the TV because of the cable (which doesn't carry the sound, so you need an extra cable for that).

You need to establish if it was 1080p or 720p HD you downloaded.
If it's 1080p it will not play at all on AppleTV1 - the hardware is not powerful enough to decode 1080p h264 (or 720p above 25fps). When AppleTv1 came out most items were SD only and with time more 720p HD stuff became available. 1080p content cm after AppleTV 1 and 2 were replaced by AppleTV 3.
AppleTV2 can process but not display 1080p - it is stuck to 720p output.
AppleTV1 could only process 720p max, but could always upscale on output to 1080p!
Your iTunes Preference should determine what quality you are downloading/renting.

As the previous response said, you can't burn your iTunes movie to a DVD. The Apple TV will be a great option but you have others as well.
The easiest option is to use the iPod Video which can connect directly to a TV's RCA jacks for video output. If you have an iPod Video then you simply need to buy a cable and you are ready to go--easy and portable. This is great for hotel rooms!
Another option, depending on your computer's and TV's input/output jacks, is to connect your computer directly to your TV. I have an inexpensive Windows XP mini-tower equiped with a cheap dual monitor video card that allows me to output composite-video, s-video, VGA and DVI. Some cards also support component video.
If this sounds to complicated, and you have a widescreen TV with component video inputs, then I would wait for the Apple TV. http://www.apple.com/appletv/
