AppleTV must use Airport to connect to iTunes?

Here is my setup...
iMac upstairs connected via ethernet and airport to a Time Capsule (airport base station)
AppleTV downstairs connected airport to the Time Capsule
The weird situation is that when I turn off my airport on my iMac, I can no longer see my AppleTV in iTunes. I also verified that the AppleTV no longer sees my library. I would prefer my connection to the iMac go over ethernet because things would flow faster since its an older iMac without an N airport card.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why this is happening?
Cheers
Joe

I think this would take a little detective work. Usually it is best not to duplicate networks by both ethernet and wireless at the same time between the same two items -- run just one at a time -- unless you are going to hand-code your routing table.
Have you tried pinging the aTV to see if it is there but iTunes just isn't seeing it?
Have you tried re-booting your Mac after turning its wireless card off and just letting it boot with ethernet?

  • Best Practices for Using Airport Express to Stream iTunes via Ethernet

So I've been reading various posts about using Airport Express to stream iTunes and I've been reading various posts about using the Ethernet port on the Express. However, not sure I've yet found an inclusive listing of settings for both. Wondering if anyone out there has such a thing?
I have an (older) Aiport Express (802.11g, no 'n') running the latest Firmware (6.3, I believe). I have it lashed into my switch via a Cat 6 cable and the 3.5 stereo mini running out to RCA jacks into my RussSound (home audio system) amp. I'd like to make the Express ONLY a iTunes streaming device getting its network link over Ethernet (AirTunes). So, what does everyone suggest for best settings for turning on the Ethernet, turning off the WiFi and running AirTunes?
    Thanks much in advance!
    cheers
    cp root

Airport > Wireless > Wireless mode "off"
Internet > Internet connection > Connect using "Ethernet", Configure IPv4 "via DHCP"
    Music > Enable Airtunes
Enable Airtunes over Ethernet (if this choice appears).
When I first did this, the remote speakers didn't appear in iTunes. I poked around to see what I missed and couldn't find anything wrong, but the next time I ran iTunes the remote speakers appeared.
If you run into a firewall problem, make sure your OS X firewall is configured to "set access for specific services and applications": http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/18503.html
Firmware 6.3 is correct for your Express.

0X is a Windows Error. Take the time to look over on the right under the "More Like This" and look for ones that have the green checkmark as being solved. You should find answers there.

Yes, I could connect them by ethernet if all I wanted to do was transfer files, but I would like to network them so I could use wireless internet.  The machines are not always so close together, I did that to simplify the testing.  With the very slow transfer speeds I am reluctant to move ahead with the internet step.

  • HT201407 i cannot activate my iphone 3Gs i tried many times using wifi and connect. to itunes but activtion is always failed

Hi, i cannot activate my iphone 3Gs i tried many times using wifi and connect. to itunes but activtion is always failed. can you help me to fix this problem?

Do you have a SIM in the phone?
A SIM is required to activate it.
If you DO have a SIM in it, the most common cause of this problem is a phone that was hacked to illegally unlock it and has been updated or restored.

  • Epson printer using airport express connect wired to PC

    Hi,
I have a problem with my epson printer C41 series.
It is connected using USB to Airport express then wired using ethernet cable to my existing router in order to share to 3 computer (2 PC, 1 PowerbookG4).
Firstly, I used bonjour to detect the printer, and it was working perfect unfortunately under my PowerbookG4. So I unplug the powerbook, just want to use airport as printer server. I ran bonjour again, it detect the printer under my airport, but it doesn't work when printing.
Perhaps you could help my problem.
    Thanks in advance.

I have a cable modem (Comcast) connected (WAN) to my
Airport Extreme Base Station. Question: Can I us an
AirPort Express to "join" this network (plug it in in
another room) and use the LAN port to connect an
Ethernet cable to a computer's Ethernet port?
If you "Join an Existing Wireless Network" the ethernet port on the AX is DISABLED. If you set up a WDS network using the AX to extend the range of your AEBS, the ethernet port will be ENABLED.
    Will
the AE LAN port have a local IP address ( i.e.
10.0.1.5) available for a wired Laptop to connect to
the internet (or even attach a non-wireless internet
    web camera)?
Properly configured as a WDS network, the device connected to the AX ethernet port will pull an IP address from the AEBS, just like any other connected device. You can also configure this connected device with a static IP address, outside the range of the dynamic DHCP addresses.
I hope this is not too basic......

  • Windows laptop won't connect to internet using airport express connection

Hi. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I set up airport express on my imac g5 so I could share the internet with my windows laptop. I have a wireless notecard plugged into my laptop (802.11gg)--the laptop recognizes a wireless network with my imac no problem. I'm able to access the internet with my imac, but my laptop can't. I have a cable modem with the ethernet cable attached to airport express. I set up the wireless network using wep. Am I missing something? Please help! Thanks!

I had a similar issue this morning. My problem was my password. Apple will allow short passwords with wep encryption. Other manufacturer's don't.
    "The multiplatform issue
Being an older protocol, WEP password treatment was not implemented uniformly by all wireless hardware and operating system manufacturers. Some products require users to enter relatively cryptic hexadecimal characters (four bits each), while others allow "plain language" password entry. A plain language password, like "apple", uses standard ASCII characters that are 8 bits each.
Products that allow plain language (ASCII) password entry may not force the network administrator to create 5- or 13-character passwords that would result in the required 40 (5*8) and 104 (13*8) bit-length passwords. Instead, they use a "hashing" routine to convert an odd-length password to the correct bit length. The multiplatform issue arises when the hashing results of products from two different manufacturers don't match each other. The resulting "network equivalent passwords," which are always given in hexadecimal format, are different."
In my case I made the password 13 characters long and everything works fine now.

thanks. the weird thing is, it didn't "recover" the phone at all. it simply said, "phone activated" when i plugged it in.

  • Network set up using airport extreme, time capsule and airport express

I have searched for relevant answers but can only find different bits here and there.
My set up is as follows:
I have a Linksys wireless router running a stable wireless network for the other computer users in the house and wish to create an extended, additional network using airport extreme connected to the Linksys by ethernet to create the network and then time capsule close to my Mac Mini on my desktop and airport express at the other end of the house to try and extend the range of the network.
I have been trying for 4 days to set this up but without success. I have tried all of the options mentioned in different posts, using WDS, extending a new network etc. I can get connection between the three devices but monitoring on iStumbler there appears to be little improvement in the strength of the signal, iStumbler also shows the time capsule dropping it's signal totally every 10 or so seconds for a few seconds and then I get a positive signal strength for another ten seconds or so.
Can anyone help, it is driving me insane. I am a recent convert to apple computing and have been hugely impressed with all products until now. The claim that the set up of these wireless products is simple seems to be very exaggerated.
I am happy to provide any relevant system or hardware information.
    Thanks in anticipation.

I have an AirPort Extreme acting as a wireless base station, connected to a BT router by ethernet.
Then the correct setting for Connection Sharing on the AirPort Extreme would be "Off (Bridge Mode)".
If I set Connection Sharing to "Share a public IP address", I'm told that:  "The DCHP range you have entered conflicts with the WAN IP address of your Apple Wi-Fi base station"
Exactly. You have two routers....The BT device and the AirPort Extreme in series with both of them trying to act as the "main" router when you configure the AirPort this way. That won't work.
Only one can be the main router, and it must be the BT device in your setup. So, the AirPort Extreme....and any other AirPorts on your network must be setup to work in Bridge Mode to allow the network to operate correctly.

  • Using Airport to extend reachability

    hi,
after the last update of my MacBook I have huge difficulties in reaching my university network with it (whereas the my colleague's awful Dell laptop has no problem). Would Airport be of any help?
    Thank you
    Xiane

...but an airport base station can be setup as a client of an existing wireless network regardless of whether its' a third party wifi router, and still provide internet access by any clients connected to it.
That is NOT correct. The AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) can ONLY be used in this fashion if it is using WDS to wirelessly connect to that network. Without WDS the AEBS can NOT join ANY other wireless network (Apple or other).
The AirPort Express (AX) can join any existing wireless network and provide streaming music and wireless printing. However to use the Ethernet port on the AX you must use WDS to connect the AX to a wireless network.

  • My Facetime does not work on my home wi-fi(I use airport). Please help me troubleshoot.

As I indicated, I have iPhone 4 using 5.0.1. I can use Facetime using wi-fi everywhere else but never at home. I'm wondering if it has something to do with my router and using Airport to connect wirelessly. Does anyone else have this problem? I'm not a tech guy so any lay explanation of what I should be looking for is appreciated. Thank you!

I too am having the same issue as the OP.

  • 3gs - Buggy Pinch Gesture (when connected to itunes)

    Hello,
I think I have found a bug on iPhone OS 3.1.2.
When iPhone is connected to iTunes, the pinch gesture doesn't work correctly (only horizontal pinch works, vertical pinch causes wierd zoom/scrolling behaviour
When iPhone is working on battery or is simply charging from the wall plug there's no problems.
I tried restoring the device but that didn't solve the problem
Anyone else with iphone os 3.1.2 can try this and tell me if it happens?
    thanks

My phone zooms normally whether pinching vertically or horizontally (with the phone in vertical or horizontal position) when connected to iTunes. I have to say I never tried this before - the only functions I can see for using the phone connected to iTunes is for syncing/backing up, updating or restoring.
If this is still happening after restoring using a backup, there are corrupted settings in your phone, try the following steps as needed:
Settings > General > Reset > Reset All Settings
Restore in iTunes as a new iPhone
