AppleTV Optical Audio Intermittent Drops

Have AppleTV connected to a BOSE Lifestyle system via optical audio cable. Works great except audio intermittently goes out for about 2 seconds and then comes back. This is, of course, annoying. Have checked cables and all are fine. Also use optical audio from DirecTV receiver with no sound drops, so seems to be an AppleTV issue. Have tried running diagnostics and restarting AppleTV with no change. Any known fixes for this? Anyone having similar problems?

The music has since played through the optical cable for several hours without any drops. Make any sense? Indicate anything?
If the optical cable connector is loose at one end or the other, or the cable is cracked and you moved it, it could be related to that, otherwise it's probably just a coincidence. A loosely connected or defective optical cable could be a possible cause of your problems.

  • Optical audio keeps dropping out

    Hi
i have an ATV3 with optical audio to my amp (no HDMI inputs) and HDMI direct to TV.  The audio will work for a few minutes and then drop out - if i leave the TV on (HDMI) it never drops out.  Sometimes it will work for a few seconds, sometimes a few hours but never consistently.  In attempts to fix i have replaced the optical cable, updated software (via mac not WIFI) but still no luck.
    Any suggestions?
    thanks

  • Optical audio drops out intermittently

    Hi
Weird problem has been occurring for the past couple of weeks. Optical audio drops out intermittently, for about 1.5 seconds. Playback isn't affected. Analogue audio is fine. MBP is connected to a Bose V20 sound system.
    Any thoughts?

  • HT200112 AppleTV 3rd - optical audio output 44.1/48KHz

    hi there,
i've a problem with the Apple TV (3rd generation) optical audio (Toslink) output. I send a 44.1KHz stream from a MacBook (OSX 10.9.1) / iTunes (11.1.4 (62)) via a wired connection (ethernet 802.3) and the optical output on the AppleTV is a 48KHz stream.
in the same case using an AirPort Express, the optical output is a correct 44.1KHz stream.
    is it a correct behavior?
    where is the problem?
    what can i do?
    thanks ahead,
    sergio

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes this is how the Apple TV works, it outputs at 48 KHz.
There isn't a problem and it's not something that can be changed.

  • How to Fix Intermittent Optical Audio Problems using Netflix?

I recently purchased the latest Apple TV and all software is up-to-date.  But I have started having intermittent audio problems only when using the Netflix app on the ATV device.  I am connected to my TV with HDMI, and running the optical audio out from my ATV to a soundbar.  On some, but not all movies, right when it starts streaming there is a loud "CRACK" and then the video continues streaming, but the audio is totally silent.
The issue is definitely with the Apple TV device and only occurs when using the optical audio out from the Apple TV and only when using Apple's Netflix app.
If I remove the optical audio connection and just use the audio on my TV coming from the HDMI, it's fine.  I can also hear audio just fine using the Netflix app on my iPod Touch or just streaming in Safari on my MacBook Pro.  It's only when using the ATV Netflix app, and it's not with all movies, only some.
But when a movie has the problem, it always has the problem no matter what day/time I try to stream it.
    Very irritating.
    Does anyone know a fix?
    Thanks.
    Kurt

Same problem here.  Since the last update, my Netflix streaming has been awful.  Not only does the audio cut off but sometimes the video will cut off and I can only hear the audio.  Then whatever I'm watching will constantly bump me off and sometimes I won't be able to get back in unless I restart ATV.
This is only ATV as Netflix streams on my MBP, imac and iphone w/ no problem....
Wish there was some way we could revert to a previous version of the software.  If so, I want to revert back to the version before the last update as everything worked great...

  • How do I get the Apple tv to play out of my Bose speakers that has the typical white and red plug ins?  Do I need an "optical audio" cord (that is what is available as a plug in on the back of the Apple tv that has the red and the white on the other side?

How do I get my speakers to play the Apple TV?  My TV is recognizing the Apple TV and the sound is playing out of the TV speakers, but even though I plug my speakers into my TV, it does not play what the TV speakers are playing.  Do I have to plg the speakers into the actual Apple TV unit?  If so, do I need an "optical audio" plug in?

appletv play audio out of optical out of hdmi and the old alu one play out the RCA too
the typical the white and red plug ins would be RCA if you have a atv2 (the black one) you cant use
RCA as that is analog and optical and hdmi are digital
you can get converters but some would be pricy and could cause delay between image and pictures for video

  • Want to use HDMI video, and Optical audio?

Is there anyway to allow optical audio at the same time as the HDMI does the video - I have ran out of video inputs on my AV amp, but have a spare HDMI input on the tv, and spare optical on the amp?
Otherwise i'll have to run component (yuk) to the TV to get this to work?
    -David

Depending on the amp too, some inputs will take precedence over another - for example if for a particular input eg DVD, I have connected both co-axial and optical digital feeds from different sources (eg DVD recorder and separate DVD player), then the co-axial device takes precedence over the optical input - so if I want to hear what's connected on optical I have to turn the co-axial device off.
Also, AppleTV seems to output a PCM digital stereo signal. It does not output DTS or Dolby Digital signals as standard.

  • ATV2 Optical Audio Setup

I'm considering getting a new home theater receiver mainly for the purpose of being able to use the Apple TV 2 optical audio, but I want to make sure that it will actually do what I want. Does the optical audio make it so that you don't need the HDMI at all when using it? I want to just be able to use the iPhone remote (and my computer's iTunes) to select music and send it to the AppleTV, but not need my TV on. Just have the audio go to the home theater system. Thanks.

    Hi,
I don't have a reversal in any mode (DTS, 5.1, Dolby stereo, plain stereo-from itunes library). Maybe try a reset and check your cabling and Handbrake settings. BTW I encode in 2 steps: Ripit to copy the DVD and remove copyguard since it is better at this than Handbrake, then I encode to m4v with handbrake and just pass through the 5.1, finally use Subler (free) to add metadata.
ATV2 is HDMI to receiver and out to speakers with wires and video via HDMI to TV

  • When should I use "Optical Audio"?

    Hello,
I have the new (3rd Gen) Apple TV connected wirelessly to my home theater and HDTV. I have the HDMI cable connected to my surround-sound receiver. I was under the impression that the HDMI cable carries both sound AND audio. If this is the case, I'm trying to figure out what the Optical Audio input is for? I went ahead and purchased an Optical Audio cable and connected it to my surround sound receiver.
My question is this: Do I need to have that Optical Audio cable connected, or should I disconnect it and just use the HDMI connection? I looked in the AppleTV manual and it does not describe why you would connect this, and I'm scratching my head trying to understand this.
    Thanks much!

Some old receivers didn't handle digital audio over HDMI very well - the only reason I can think of using the port.
If it worked without the optical before, you don't need it now!

  • Optical audio but Analogue output

Hi, I connected my AppleTV to my Bose audio system ONLY with optical audio cable.
I figured out that sounds comes out with a movie in DD and ALSO with other sources (like youtube videos).
The Audio & Video settings on ATV is setup to ON regarding DD.
Question: I thought that with that configuration I could hear only DD audio stream. Is a BOSE features or ATV output audio through optical always regardless its source format ?
    Thanks, Roberto.

Oh yes, this is the reply I was looking for, so in this case I could avoid using the analogue output (RCA) on ATV ? In the case I'm going to use it anyway which will be the channel used by ATV for outputting audio ?
Question: if I have a movie with two audio tracks (the first one stereo and the the second one in DD) and connect the ATV to my Bose audio system with optical audio cable and my ATV is setup with Dolby Digital on which will be the audio stream passed to my Bose audio system ?
    Thanks, Roberto.

  • Optical audio output specs

What sample rates and frequencies can the optical audio output handle?
    Is 96kHz/24bit available?

I am not convinced you've given a valid answer. Maybe if I elaborate a bit more...
I have a song in iTunes that is in the Apple lossless format. The song is sampled at 96kHz/24bit.
When I play that song via AirTunes to an Airport Express, the optical digital output of the Airport Express provides 48kHz/24bit to the input of my standalone D/A converter. It appears that somewhere between iTunes and the Airport Express the audio information is down-sampled from a 96/24 signal to 48/24 signal.
So my original question, rephrased, is: when I play a 96/24 Apple Lossless file in iTunes, and send that song via AirTunes to AppleTV, what is the sample rate at the optical digital output of the Apple TV? Does Apple TV, like Airport Express, down-sample the digital information, or does it pass the ausio information through at the full 96/24 bitrate of the audio file?

  • Optical Audio output format?

The Optical Audio out from my Apple TV is not being seen by my stereo. My theory is that my stereo Dolby Digital converter is old (circa ~1997? Yamaha DDP-2) and may only accept Dolby Digital AC-3. Is the Apple TV optical audio format sending a different signal? The audio is coming through HDMI to my TV just fine.

I'm having the same problem. I have an HDMI hooked directly from Apple TV to the TV and optical audio to my receiver/dvd (sony home theater system dav-fx80). I do see a red light at the end.
.... There's only a sound if the TV is turned on, meaning HDMI connection is working, but if I turn off the TV, audio is cut off, meaning my optical audio is not working.
I think you have a different problem.
In reality HDMI is probably working too well - it's probably sensing TV is off and then rather stupidly going to sleep when you're trying to play audio over optical. Is it only when TV powered off or in standby too? I need to test this but my AppleTV2 needs moving to the room with hi-fi so I can check if i have the same issue - I'm sure it used to work with TV off, AppleTV 1 does (at least in standby mode).

  • Can you select or disable AppleTV's audio output?

I have my AppleTV connected to the television via HDMI and also connected to an amplifier via optical audio. I would like to disable the HDMI audio output as to not have the sound play through the television, but it does not appear to be configurable in the AppleTV menu. Is this possible?

Well I'm running update v.4.2.2 I don't have a solid internet connection to update the blasted thing. I have my optical audio plugged in and I'm getting signal lights through the cable but when its plugged into my reciever no sound comes out of my reciever, only the HDMI connection into the TV. I would like to fix it without haveing to jailbreak it and put xbmc on it.

  • Does the optical audio stream directly to a receiver?

Can you stream music directly through the optical audio out on ATV2 without the tv being on?  (similar to airport?)

In theory yes, though it's not officially advertised as a feature, except that a recent firmware update scuppered the functionality.
A recent firmware has supposedly fixed this but I've not tested myself to confirm as AppleTv is in another room to my hi-fi.
