Appletv recognizes my wireless network but won't connect to the internet. can't restore to factory settings

appletv won't connect to the internet, but recognizes my wireless network. ip address starts with 169.. somethings not right. never had a problem with appletv and home sharing until the update that required a change in my apple id

An IP address starting with 169 indicates you are not properly connected to your network. Try restarting your router and try to connect again. if the problem persists you may be suffering from interference.

My ipad recognizes my home network but will not connect to the internet. When I click on AirPort/preferences at the top of the imac screen it says..."AirPort has a self-assigned ip address and may not connect to the internet". If this is the root of the problem, how can I change ip address?
Ipad will connect no problem to other networks.

First thing you need I think is to get your iMac connected to the Internet.
Shut down your iMac and you iPad. Then power off your router. Wait 30 seconds and power up the router.
After the router indicates that it is connected to the Internet then start up your iMac and see if it connects. If the iMac connects to the Internet then your iPad should too.
If this power up sequence doesn't work you'll have to dig into the router setup to make sure it is working properly.

  • Rebooted my WRT160N, now my laptop connects to my network but won't connect to the internet

I forgot my original network password so I rebooted my wirless router, now my computer reconizes my home's wireless network and connects to it (accepted the new password and everything), but when I open my browser it can't connect to the internet. My internet connection still works when I plug my laptop directly into my cable modem, and my laptop says I'm connected to my wireless network, so I don't know what the problem is here.
I've been tearing my hair out for the last few hours trying to figure out a way to fix this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • My airport extreme shows a green light, but won't connect to the internet.

I have an airport extreme, and it stopped working one day, so I reseted it and it's not connecting to the internet now.  It's showing a green light, however, it won't connect to the internet. I live in an apartment complex, so I don't have a cable modem. The router is directly connected to the wall via ethernet. I had the ports checked by connecting the ethernet cord directly to the computer, and the internet is working fine. I tried resetting the router, but it still doesn't connect.

Your problem is typical Yosemite network.. just reboot the Time Capsule.. no luck reboot the network.. do a restart in correct order.. modem.. wait 2min.. TC .. wait 2min.. clients.
No luck then do a full reset of the TC and setup in a way that Yosemite can cope with.
Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.
    http://arstechnica.com/apple/2015/01/why-dns-in-os-x-10-10-is-broken-and-what-yo u-can-do-to-fix-it/
Same thing applies to the Airport Extreme or the Express if used as router.. just replace TC in the instructions with AE.

  • My Apple Tv is connecting to the Wifi network but is not connect to the internet.  So when I look for it on my Airplay it doesn't come up.  I have 3 other ones already working on the network and they are all fine.

My apple TV is finding and connecting to the Wifi network but then says it is not connected to the internet and then I cannot find it on the iPad through airplay.  I don't want it connected to the internet (as in www.) because for the use I have I only need to use the Apple tvs locally in a sports hall as scoreboards.  I have 3 others working on the same router and they are working fine (as of yesterday)
On my screen I see (obviously not written like this)
    network connect- yes
    signal strength- fine
    Ip address- fine
    DCN- fine
    Activation- Failed
This is the only negative I can find and the statement that the Apple TV has connected to the wifi but is not connected to the internet.
Where has it gone wrong for me. Please help

It is not properly connected to the network.
Make sure location is set correctly
DNS should be on auto (settings - general - network)
    Try ethernet
Signal strength on device won't account for issues, you would need a network report from istumbler, netstumbler or similar. This will show accurate signal strength along with noise and nearby networks

  • IMac sees the ethernet but won't connect to the internet

we had a power outage that crashed the imac.   now it won't connect to the internet.  the imac can see the ethernet connection.   we have several other apple and dell devices that all see the internet so it's not cabling or hardware.    it's a cable modem connection that uses automatic DHCP configuration.  I've created a new Location setting with no change.   I'm assuming that there is a corrupted file since all the other systems connect fine.  any idea which one it may be or what else I should be looking for?

Shot in the dark, but did you try an SMC reset?
    SMC Reset
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer’s power cord and disconnect peripherals.
Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    Release the power button.
    Attach the computers power cable.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.

  • My Macbook Pro will recognize my network but will not connect to the internet

My macbook will not connect to the internet at home.  It works fine on other networks, but at home it will recognize my network name but says it will not be able to connect to the internet.  This issue just sort of came up randomly.  I have shut the router off (I use Verizon Vios) and reset it and that doesn't work.  The little Wifi status at the top of the screen just has an exclamation point over it.  I haven't changed any of the default network settings.  It just stopped working.  When I take it to work and use their network or free wifi available at stores etc...it connects just fine.  A few weeks ago upgraded my operating system to Mavericks, but it has worked up until this morning.

Do this. Go to Apple menu / System Preferences / Network.
In the left column, click Wi-Fi. Next click Assist me, then Assistant. Follow the on screen instructions.

  • Connected to network but unable to connect to the internet wirelessly

I recently installed a new hard drive in my dell inspirion e1405 laptop and I can no longer connect to the internet wirelessly using the WRT54G v2. When I use ethernet it works. It says I am connected to the network. I punched in the WEP key and I am connected. I power cycled my cable modem, laptop and router several times. I followed these linksys suggestions:
Checking the IP Address of the PC
Checking the Wireless Settings on a Linksys Router
    Disabling Computer's Firewall
    Disabling Proxy Settings
    Pinging the Router
    Pinging the Internet
and it still isn't working. I downloaded the firmware and that did not work. I am using XP MCE 2005. I updated the driver for my dell wireless card several times and also deleted it from the device manager and rebooted. Still nothing.
    Anyone have an idea?

    Well, hope this might help
make sure you only get IP from the router's DHCP. yes, you must set Obtain IP Address for all network adapter on your notebook (wired and wireless). the basic is, all things will be fine if this IP issue is not around. coz, at behind, they do something more than give / got IP, such as creating routing path automatically. that which will be guaranteed the success of ethernet communication for wired and wireless.
i cannot guess your problem, but you might want to do this.
first, as above said, just Obtain IP Address, make it for both adapter on your notebook
second, wireless security, must talk in same way (SSID, Channel, b/a/g/n) and use same key (WEP or WPA, passphrase/secret key).
third, if anyhow you got connected but still can't go through internet, but, you can ping or access your router, for example, open your router web server to do some change of the configuration, means your packet is stuck on the router and cannot deliver further to internet and it is gateway issue. no else.
well, three shots shall go but you might need more bullets coz this is called troubleshoot
let's see how it will go.
    wish you luck

  • Logic won't connect to the internet - can't load additional content

    Hello,
when i click on 'download additional content' logic just says, that it isn't connected to the internet. But my internet connection is working fine! Surfing with Safari is no problem.
Is there a solution for this problem?
    Thank you for your help.

Okay.. well I can tell you that others from Germany (Specifically Bonn and Berlin) downloaded content yesterday so it's not likely a problem with accessing the local European Servers  from Germany,...
So I'm guessing it has to be something specific to you and your own Mac, your internal network or your Internet Service provider...
Usually the problem with WiFi is that the download will start but then cut out during the process... and not that it wont find the servers at all... which is why Im not convinced that is really the problem.
Given you downloaded Logic Pro X yesterday you can connect to the Mac App Store servers... which is even more confusing so I would first call Apple themselves and ask for their assistance directly....

  • Windows XP laptop sees wireless network but won't connect

I set up a wireless network on my airport extreme using my MacBook. The McBook runs great on the wireless network. My old Dell laptop running Windows XP sees the wireless network I created (with full signal strength) but every time I hit "connect" I get the following error message, "Windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again." When I referesh the list, the wireless network is still there, and i still cannot connect, getting the same error message.
    Any suggestions?

Hello apetera. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Per chance are you using WEP for your wireless encryption?
If so, one of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice versa.

  • My mac can see the network but won't connect to the server

I have an intel Imac.  The network connect is working but very squirrelly.  I see most objects on the network.  I can see the server but it will not let me connect.
I go to another mac and I can connect to the server.  So I think its my mac   10.7.5 is the OS

Probably nothign to do with your iMac or OS X, have you attempted resetting your router? Also you haven't stated what messages you are getting or any other information. If this is at your work then I'd suggest contacting your IT support person, the connection to your network may be on their end.

  • Apple tv is connected to the network but won't connect to internet?

My apple tv 3 is connected to our wireless network but will not connect to the internet.  I also cannot turn on home sharing.  All the other wireless devices in our house have no problem with the internet.  I have hooked the apple tv up to the computer and restored the factory defaults but that did not help.  Any suggestions?

have you tried connecting using ethernet to see if it's a wifi issue ?
and have you verified that the required ports are allowed on the network ?

  • Why does my airport base station show all green lights but doesn't connect to the internet?

I have an Airport Express Base Station that has been working beautifully up until this morning.  For no apparent reason (changes in ANYTHING), I cannot connect to the internet through it.  Here's the situation:
The light on the airport is solid green.
Aiport Utility shows all is well...the base station shows up, with green light, IP address, etc.
Network Diagnostics shows "your connection to the internet seems to be working correctly."
Connecting the modem directly to the computer via ethernet cable works fine...internet humming right along.
Connecting the modem to the base station doesn't work, even though all green lights and "all systems go" diagnostics.
Wireless access via iPhone and iPad not working, either, so definitely not computer-based issue.
No changes have been made to anything.  I'm running 10.6.8 on a 2007 MacBook Pro.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Nancy

    Hi Bob,
    Thanks for responding.
Does that IP address start with 169, or something else?
The IP address starts with 10.0...
Does this mean that the iPhone and iPad can connect to the wireless network....but not get to the Internet?.....or.....does this mean that the iPhone and iPad cannot connect to the wireless network at all?
They can see and connect to the wireless network, but aren't connecting to the internet, just like my computer.  Sorry for not being clear about that.
Can you look on the side of the AirPort Express to locate the model number?  Hard to see, you may need a magnifying glass. Starts with an "A" followed by four numbers, as in A1264, or A1084, for example.
The model number on the Airport is A1392.
Any insights based on this info?  Thanks for your help.

  • I just bought a new pc and My laptop can connect to it but my airport utility won't recognize it. Even though it does connect to the internet about every 15 minutes the internet shuts off.

I just bought a new pc and for our internet connection we have an airport express. My laptop can connect to it but my airport utility won't recognize it. Even though it does connect to the internet about every 15 minutes the internet shuts off. What should I do?

If you've not yet tried, unpower the AppleTV for a minute or so and restart - this occasionally corrects issues.
If not and the software update seems to have caused an issue, go to the Settings menu and choose to Restore it (this will erase all settings) to reapply current firmware.
Alternatively try to do so via iTunes:
