AppleTV Rented Movie Twice - Kept Hanging, Completely Died an hour later

I find this so interesting since My Apple TV is hardly used & is fairly new + hasn't moved since it was unboxed.
My wife bought the 'Sex & The City' movie & halfway through, it just hung & was unresponsive, then skipped drastically, kind of like what a scratched DVD movie would do.
I contacted Apple thinking it was a bad download & re-downloaded it; this time, even worse.
Finally, an hour or so later, the unit was making noises & then wouldn't turn on (insisted on only displaying a "?" on a disc on my TV).
I'm a software engineer & immediately suspected Hard Disk corruption or bad hard drive, and just hooked up a replacement from Apple.
I wanted to know if anyone else has seen this, or am I the only one?
I'm praying that this one is good.
Network is connected Wireless & Wired. AppleTV is wired to a 1TB Time Capsule on a constant 30+ MB/s network on Cable lines.

To solve this, I got a replacement from my local Apple store. They said it was definitely hard drive defective (physical).

try a reset, hold down the home/sleep button together until you see the apple logo and then release, then wait for the phone to boot back up.

  • HT4095 Keep getting a error when trying to play rented movie we could not complete your itunes store request. an unknown error occurred (-42110)

I downloaded a HD movie for rental and every time i go to play it i get a error saying we could not complete your Itunes store request. a Unknown error occurred (-42110)

  • HT4628 Why does a rented movie say it will load in 3 hours?!

Why do I get a message on appletv saying the movie will load in 3 hrs?  I have a fast connection and no other devices on network.  This is when renting from iTunes.  Not a common occurrence. Thanks!

That may have to do with demand from the store as much as anything else.     2 hours movie typically is about 4.3 GB especially in HD.   At FiOS speeds of 15 Mbps, it would take 2 1/4 hours to download.  If you give it at least 25% download, you won't excede the buffer and the speed of the connection.  iTunes may not stream in the conventional sense, in that every bit you download can be portrayed the moment it downloads.     That's why I say, give it a little buffer room, and then start playing.

  • HT1657 How long does the rented movie have to play before the 24 hour limit starts?

I hit play on my rental before I was ready to watch. How far into the movie before the 24 hour limit starts?

As far as I know the clock starts immediately you start playing it. You should be able to see how long you have left - from http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1415 :
On your device, the time remaining for you to finish watching the movie appears near the movie title.
I assume that you are in the US ? In other countries you have 48 hours from when you start watching it, not 24

  • "An error occurred loading this content" problem for rented movies

I have an AppleTV 2 connected via Ethernet to my BT Home Hub router and HDMI to my TV. My OSX (Lion), iTunes and AppleTV software are all up to date.
Everything works fine apart from renting movies. When I rent a movie, it shows I can play it rather quickly (too quick in my mind, I thought you had to wait for a certain amount to download) so this is strange. BUT when I do go to play it it states:
"An error occurred loading this content. Please try again later"
There is no other error to inidicate the issue. If I do try later (sometimes 2 days later) I still get the error.
I tried downloading Hall Pass, The Eagle and The Adjustment Bureau, all were the same.
I can stream YouTube and Radio from the net, I can stream music, pictures and video from my iMac OK. Its only rented movies.
I contacted Apple and they basically told me there is nothing wrong with the content so sent me some standard troubleshooting links none of which help, and said to post if here. So Apple will not help any more.
This used to work fine, some months ago I rented a couple of movies OK. The only things that would have changed since then are possibly upgrading AppleTV software (I dont know if I did this after renting a movie OK), and upgrading to Lion and to iTunes latest software.
Would any of these upgrades, especially to Lion, affect AppleTV rented movies???
    Thanks

I have the same issue, to temporarily fix it go to Settings > General > Restart.  When it restarts the movie should play.  You have to do this for each movie for the most part.

  • Rented movie won't play "not compatible with Apple TV"

Using my apple tv, i rented a movie from the iTMS. When I try to play it I get an error message saying it can't be played because it's incompatible with Apple TV.
Troubleshooting: I unplugged the ATV for more than 5 minutes and replugged it. I checked to see whether purchased music still plays (it does) and whether purchased tv shows still play (they do). I can also go to iTMS and view previews of movies.
So everything seems to be working, except this movie. (I have two other rented movies but they don't expire for a couple weeks; this one expires in 22 hours so it's sort of imperative i view it today or lose it, and i can't do the one final test -- see if the other rented movies play ok -- because then the 24-hour ticker on those would start, and i'd have only enough time to watch one of them, and not the one that's already set to expire in 24 hrs.
ironically, the only support thread i could find on this particular error message for apple TV-acquired media, involves this same movie, "An American Rhapsody". That question was posted more than a year ago and never was resolved. (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1492298)
It's a little frustrating that the only apple support i could find for this issue is email support, promising me an answer within 24 hrs. So it's unlikely an answer will come in time. Maybe they'll help arrange a credit to my account after the fact. But (and i'm a big fan generally of apple and apple support) it seems like there ought to be customer service to cover the situation where someone buys (in this case, rents) something and can't get the promised product.
I've spent 90 minutes trying to solve this and the friend who was going to watch it with me just left, but i'm still curious to see if anyone can propose a fix. thanks!

you should use the "report a problem" link that is on the email invoice you get.
this will take you to the itunes section to report an issue with a particular purchase.
or go to "view my account" in itunes and then choose "purchase history"
if it didn't work you'll most likely get a refund.

  • Video/Rented Movies from iTunes on iPad 2

I rented a movie from iTunes to play on my iPad2. After downloading (3+ hrs) and syncing, the movie appeared once under my Video App. I thought I was set. I went to watch the movie the next day and the Video App says that there are No Videos. It doesn't expire until the end of April, so I thought I messed up. I went back to my computer and found the movie in iTunes and resync'd my iPad. Again, it showed up once then disappeared from the Video App. I reset my iPad, to no avail. Anyone have any ideas why it is doing this? I have never even started playing it.

Once you begin watching a rented movie, you must finish within twenty-four hours.

  • Battery shutdown during rented movie playback recovery.

During a recent vacation, my kids were watching rented movies in the van while traveling. Unknown to all, the Magsafe connection came off and the laptop lost power during the beginning of a movie. I could no longer access the movie as "it had been viewed". Don't want to through away the $3.99, can this movie be recovered to watch later? How would I go about this?

well hopefully when you downloaded or rented the movie you put it on your backup drive from itunes. This is where all your music and videos are stored just in case something crashes or as you were saying the battery. You should be able to find it there. Also if im correct rented movies have to be watch within 24 hours when you first start it. So if you cant find it basically its been more than 24 hours, so you cant retrieve it. Hope all goes well.

  • HT1657 having problems renting movies on appleTV

We are having problems using our appleTV, earlier today it wouldn't show up on my ipad while watching a podast, we had to watch it form the ipad instead of the TV.
Then we rented a movie from the iTunes store on the appleTV and it told us it would take 16 hours to download and watch it, then it changed to 20 hours and then 23 hours. I am about to take the dog gone unit back and tell them to keep it. This happened earlier last week where we ended up paying twice to watch a movie on both the iPad and appleTV. Thankfully they reimbursed us.  Help !!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
The first thing to check would be your internet download speed, you can do this at www.speedtest.net.
1080p HD movies require a recommended speed of 8 Mbps, 720p HD movies require a recommended speed of 6 Mbps, while SD movies require a recommended speed of 2.5 Mbps.

Rentals can only play on one device/computer at a time.  Have you tried to play on the computer and still have that window open?
Have you transferred the rental to iPod/iPhone or iPad to watch?
If it won't play anywhere contact iTunes support at:

Thanks for the pointers folks. Yeah, 1.5GB is pretty poor isn't it? There are other suppliers, but you have to get a their phone line installed to access the internet so it's an £85 setup fee plus a day off work for a guy to come round and drill a hole in your wall before you even get to the monthly costs.
Don't get me wrong though - I'm certainly not an Apple basher, but am equally frustrated with both them and the ISP.
Virgin Media spend all kinds of money advertising their broadband as the fastest in the UK, but don't tell you (up front anyway) that you'll be cut off if you actually try and use it.
Apple on the other hand carry on with their 'it just works' mantra, but with Apple TV this only applies if you meet certain criteria (again, not mentioned up front).
I guess it aint a biggie, as i was gifted my Apple TV, and love all the other stuff it does, but from the number of posts on this forum can see that there's a lot of angry customers out there who want explanations as to why they're having similar problems to me.
Will be very interesting to see if Apple release any kind of software update that turns the flash drive from a buffer to permanent storage, to at least ease some of the pain...

How do I move a rented movie on appletv to itunes.
You can't. A rental done on an Apple TV can't be played anywhere else.

Power off the router. Wait awhile. Power it back on. Wait until all the lights are lit up properly.
