AppleTV Streaming Query

I have a MacMini under my TV which I use as a media machine to service all my video content in the living room.
Its running Snow Leopard with the Perian plugin to give me access to content not supported natively by iTunes/Quicktime.
Now all is fine with this setup and my kids happily use Front Row to get at content via the Apple Remote.
Given Apple has, in its inifinite wisdom, removed Front Row from Lion and I am unable to find a Front Row alternative that will serve my TV Show content from iTunes like Front Row does, I was thinking of using an AppleTV instead as the front end/Front Row replacement.
Sledge hammer to crack a nut I know but I need my kids to access the video content via a simple remote rather than a mouse. Its just more elegant and kiddy proof.
So my question is can I use an AppleTV in this was, basically as an expensive front end to my MacMini and still be able to stream ALL iTunes content OK e.g if it works on the MacMini can I access it from and stream it to the AppleTV ???
I know I will have to run iTunes in 32 bit mode under Lion as the Perian plugin is not supported in 64 bit mode currently but I can live with that.
Any help appreciated especially if there is a more reasonable solution to this problem. I have checked out Mediacentral by equinux but this doesn't seem to serve TV Shows or iTunes purchased content which defeats the object for me.

The Apple TV won't play the files you need to use perian for, the Apple TV will play these files:
H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

AppleTV functionality query

Hi,
it is said that AppleTV streams ONLY content purchased via either AppleTV or iTunes. Given this exclusivity, I cannot use AppleTV for streaming unrelated movies and music from my iMac to the HDTV even if it is contained in the iTunes library. Is this correct?
As I understand the matter, I would have to use AirPlay to stream Apple-unrelated content to the HDTV. If this is the case, it's probably worth waiting till November when a new model of AppleTV is supposed to feature integrated AirPlay functionality. Am I getting all this right? Feedback on these issues is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome to the Apple Community.
In addition to content from the iTunes store you can also view content from netflix (subject to it's availability in your location) directly from the Internet to the Apple TV. You also have access to YouTube.
Aside from content you can obtain from the Internet, anything that is in iTunes and in a compatible format (720p h264 etc) can be streamed to the Apple TV, this not only includes purchases made from the iTunes store to your computer but your own movies as well as podcasts.
The current Apple TV software and iPod/iPad/iPhone software already supports AirPlay, which allows content in iTunes on these devices as well as content in many apps and websites to be streamed to the Apple TV.
There is a new iOS being released later this year, but you won't need a new Apple TV and indeed there is no mention of a new Apple TV at that time, although nothing can be guaranteed in that respect.

Can Multiple AppleTVs Stream from the Same iTunes?

I'm about to receive two AppleTV units for my home. One for each of the main TVs. Can I stream content from one computer to both units at the same time? (I'm not looking to have different content played at the same time, just the same thing going to both units) If anyone has some insight on this, I'd appreciate it!

Chris is correct, if you stream the same content to two tv's it will be via two streams. You will need to initiate each stream from each tv so synchronisation will be difficult for you.
I often have 2 or 3 streams from my library at the same time, I don't have any issues with it. (My mac is on a Gb network with my tv's on either the same Gb network or their own wifi networks)

AppleTV streaming has out of sync audio - anyone else having same issue?

Ive noticed since last updates to appletv and itunes that any mp4 file imported to itunes have very slight out of sync issues, enouth to be very annoying.... is it just me? i stream wirelessly usinga mac book pro and the latest appletv.

I've had this issue too. I found that if you hold down the select button (the big one in the middle) on the remote, you'll get a menu at the top of which is an "audio" button. If you navigate to it and select it, you'll probably see that "english surround" is selected. go down to just "english" and select that. This should take care of the problem, it does for me!

Shared Photo Stream Query

Hi,
I'm loving the new shared photo-stream in iOS 6.
Quick query though:
As an example - Let's say I've created a shared photo stream called 'family' which I've created from 5 photos I want to share with family members. I created the original shared album 2 days ago. I have now taken another photo which I want to add to the existing shared album but, having clicked share on the photo it only gives me the option to create a new shared album or add the photo to empty shared photo stream albums I've created. The shared album I want to add to doesn't show.
Am I missing something or can you not add further images. I've seen videos which seem to suggest you can add and subtract from shared photo stream albums but I can't see how.
Help please!

I think you are under impression that your wife can share photos, or make changes to your photostream. When IOS 7 comes out this fall that would be an option. At that point in order for her to share pictures with you she HAS to create and share photostream as well. That is what was missing from your description. That is if I am correct.

AppleTV Streaming while keeping Photos on AppleTV Hard Drive

I am a new Apple user. Just purchased an AppleTV and an MAC Mini. What I want to do is my most popular photos on the ATV for quick access when I have friends over, but at the same time I want to stream from my mini for other photos without lossing what is on the ATV. Right now it seems to be one or the other. Any help will be great and detailed instructions even better.

AppleTV can connect to more than one iTunes library.
So if you had a MacMini, a laptop and a Windows desktop they could all stream data to AppleTV from iTunes.
However, only one of the connections can sync with AppleTV. This special 'sync' library fills AppleTV with copies of music/video/photos either automatically or as you specify in the AppleTV Device tabs in iTunes. These synced files appear under My Music/Movies etc in teh menus.
To confuse issues, the sync library will also make any material that won't fit on AppleTV available to it by streaming - except for photos. So when iTunes is open your My Music lists anything synced to AppleTV plus (if you had too much music to fit on it) anything else in iTunes. The extra stuff appears transparently in the menus. Unfortunately I don't think you can stream photos - but you can make photos sync first which might be useful if you had too much overall to fit on AppleTV - you sync all the photos, then can stream anything else.
Alternatively with itunes on another computer you could set up a new link under AppleTV's Settings>Computers (NOT the top entry which is the sync library). These 'shared' streaming only libraries then appear as My Shared Music etc in the menus.

External drive and AppleTV streaming

I was thinking about changing my Airport Extreme to a 1TB Time capsule, mainly to store my iTunes media and stream to my AppleTV, with the bonus of auto backup. But the considerable volume of critical reviews of the TC plus the sage comments from Winston Churchill (TC is a back up device not an external storage one) are making me pause. In simple terms, can I add a large external USB drive to the airport base station, transfer my iTunes library (including movies and my Aperture libraries) to it, and stream from there to my AppleTV?

Not entirely sure if this is what you are saying but regardless of whether the content is on an external drive attached to the mac/pc or acting as a network drive attached to an AE, if the computer which runs itunes is not turned on then you will not be able to stream content.
This is the reason that you are able to sync some content to the tv itself, so that you have something to play when your computer is off or otherwise unavailable.

AppleTV doesnt query iTunes every time so misses new content

Hi,
I have this on again off again problem with my AppleTV (possibly between iTunes versions).When I open TV Shows, for example, it should give me a message saying "loading XXX library" which is good as it is checking iTunes for a list of available content.
At present (since iTunes 9) it doesnt do this so it only shows the content that was on my iMac since I set it up. As new content is added it doesnt appear as its not rescanning the library.
Anyone else have this problem?? or know the solution.
I have to repair the AppleTV with iTunes to have it check the library which is obsurd!

I am having the same problem. I have about 213 videos on my MAC... used to be able to just stream them to either one of two iTV's. Now after recent updates, I find that the iTV's do not see recently added content to the iTunes movie file. THis is whether or not it is set to sync any movies at all, or no movies (in which case it is supposed to just look at the content of the ITunes file.) It appears that iTV must build its list of files in iTUNES when it is set up, and then never updates this list regardless of whether new content is added to iTUNES. Very irritating, and not the way it is supposed to work.
Only work-around I have found is to just manually add the new file you want to watch to the iTV by selecting it and pushing sync.... then wait for the GBs to be transferred (if you have any room left on the iTV)..... AGAIN.. NOT THE WAY IT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK (APPLE?).. needs a fix.

HT1918 iTune Store Billing Issues Affecting AppleTV Streaming

Hey community, I no longer operate a Windows or a Mac computer. I have found a better OS. OpenSource Ubuntu.
How do I do my iTunes account billing without iTunes?
I am not going to reinstall Windows on my laptop doing a dual boot. just to fix an issue that Apple created.
I've been running Ubuntu for about a month, I've been watching my movies and listening to my music on AppleTV just fine, and now this.
Here is the message AppleTV is giving me: There is a billing problem with a previous purchase, Go to the iTunes Store on your computer and click Purchase History to resolve the problem.
There has never been a problem with streaming from the iTunes Store Server on Apple's end.
Do I sound up-set?

Video format that supports iTunes- appleTV streaming AND DLNA

I have both DLNA support and an Apple TV. I've been converting my dvds to mp4 so I can stream via iTunes to my TV,,Unfortunately mp4 is not compatible with DLNA (mpeg2). Is there a video/audio format, or a software solution, that will work? Of course the simple solution would be for Itunes to support mpeg-2 formation...Any insight?

If you stick to this outline, using MOV that may work.
H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.0 or lower, Baseline profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
Try using things like MPEG Streamclip, which will enable you to configure a profile

Photo stream query - Where are my pictures.

I have an imac, ipad (3) and iphone 5. When I take a picture with my iphone or ipad then the photo's appear in each others photo stream. However, they do not appear in the photo stream of the imac. I have checked in settings in all cases and they are showing photo stream switched on. However, in iphoto on the imac if I click on it it says turn on photo stream or no thanks. It also says it is connected to my email address. Can you please advise on what I am doing wrong.

Photo stream query?

Hi. Photos taken on my iPhone are not automatically on my iPhoto. I have checked all the photo stream in the system preferences and all appears ok. But, in iPhoto/Photo Stream I have a message 'unable to connect'. Can anyone help here?

verify that you have IOS5 on the portable devices and Lion and iPhoto '11 on the Mac and that every one is logged into the same id for photostream

AppleTV v1.1 - AppleTV YouTube Streams Blocked in China

Hi,
I'm living in China on an assignment for a few years and picked up an AppleTV recently.
After upgrading to 1.1, I was thrilled to discover the YouTube feature but my happiness did not last long. I'm able to browse through the videos; however, when I play one, I get the full-screen playback display with the progress bar at the bottom, the gray YouTube logo in the background but the video never begins. The progress wheel spins forever and ever.
Like most things here in China, I suspect that the big Chinese firewall is blocking these streams. It's strange because YouTube is not blocked and I can watch YouTube videos on my laptop without issue. There just seems to be a problem with the AppleTV streams.
Have the guys at Apple heard other reports of this? Is there anything that can be done to get this feature to work?

The theatrical trailers stream with no problem. Actually, every other function on AppleTV works perfectly.
I think you're right in that the YouTube streams for AppleTV (transcoded H.264?) come from a different server than the streams that play through their Flash interface on youtube.com.
It seems strange that the GFoC would block these streams and not the youtube.com website and website streams so perhaps it is some sort of capacity issue.
Interestingly, the GFoC recently started blocking the flickr photo server but not the site itself. You can still get to flickr but all of the photos show up as broken image icons.
Anyway, let me know if you guys learn anything concrete.

How to set up multiple ABS and AppleTV 2

Just got the 5th Gen AEBS. But now I've been reading too much and getting all confused.
AEBS 5th g (not connected yet)
Express "n" (main wifi router, located in bedroom with modem)
Express "g" (in the kitchen for AirPlay speakers)
Express "g" (in the garage for Airplay speakers)
AppleTV 2 (in the bedroom close to the Express "n")
The Express "n" range has been fine, so I don't think I need to "extend" the network.
I'd like to have my media and Time Machine drives connected to the new AEBS which both Macs could share
I THINK I'd get better AppleTV streaming if the AppleTV was hardwired to the new AEBS, Is that correct?
We also have ipads and iphones so I think that dual band is necessary.
Please tell me the best way to set this all up.

Well first off if you can hardwire the Apple TV definitely do it, ethernet is always better then wireless. Your wireless network is actually running at "g" speeds do to the 802.11g expresses connected to it. The 802.11n express is not simultaneous dualband so it must downgrade to 2.4 ghz. You'll want to configure the extreme as you normally would a main router, you can also setup a specific 5ghz network SSID for the computers to connect to. This is found within manual setup in airport utility within the wireless option section of the wireless tab. You can connect an externally powered USB hub to the extreme to share multiple drives, most USB powered portable externals do not work however as neither the extreme nor the hub's can power them enough to operate properly.

Home media server for mac, that you can also get to remotely. Any ideas? I am out of space on my macbook pro hard drive and appletv. Need some sort of media server for delivery to macs, ipods, ipads, etc. Any suggestions?

I have been using my macbook pro as a home media server, hosting most content on the macbook with ipod touch, ipads, and appletv streaming/sharing content. I have run out of space on both the macbook pro and the apple tv and am looking to moving the content to a home media server. Any thoughts/suggestions? I'd like something that I can access remotely too. I have an old slingbox and also have a static IP address.
Any thoughts/suggestions would be most welcome!

Don't worry I've sorted it! I just had to turn off Reminders as well in iCloud. Calendar then worked fine, even when I turned Calendar and Reminders back on.
