AppleTV to TimeCapsule

Need help urgent! I have MacBook, AppleTV, Time Capsule bought last year. All movies, musics, photos stored in Itunes MacBook which sync with Apple TV using Wifi connection from Time Capsule. Problem is now my MacBook & Apple TV hard disc are full. As I know that Time Capsule is work as hard disc.
How to transfer some movies/music/photos from AppleTV to Time Capsule? Because now when I took my MacBook out of the house, AppleTV doesn't work. Basically what I want is to transfer/sync some movies/music to watch at home without MacBook.
Thanks

iTunes > preferences > advanced
change iTunes media folder location to the TC
on the same tab, ensure the copy to ... when adding option is checkmarked
select (highlight) the movies in iTunes
right-click (or ctrl-click) and select consolidate files from the pop-up menu
when done, you may delete the original files on your MB's boot disk.
if you use the TC for time machine backups also, i suggest you create a suitably sized sparsebundle disk image on the TC for use with iTunes.
note that the TC's drive (or the disk image for iTunes) must be mounted on your desktop before you launch iTunes if you want to use the content stored there.
however, i don't recommend you use the TC to store your movie files:
you can not use time machine to backup the files on the TC
when your TC goes belly up, it will be very difficult to retrieve the date from it
instead, consider using a USB drive connected to the TC. that way, you could periodically connect the external to your Mac and use e.g. Carbon Copy Cloner to back it up to yet another external HD

  • Connect AppleTV to TimeCapsule via cable?

    Hi,
My TimeCapsule and AppleTV stand right next to each other.
I use g-wifi components in my WLan forcing the whole network to use slower g rather than n standard.
Could I Ethernet connect AT to TC at all and would this allow to benefit from faster connection at cable speed between ADSL->TC->AT?
    thanks for a hint,
    Flavio

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
Yes you can replace the wifi connection with ethernet, but there are a couple of things of note here.
As Rudegar points out, it won't improve your internet connection.
You can actually have wifi equipment too close to each other.
You don't need to have your network set at 'g' only. If you set it for 'g' and 'n', 'n' capable devices won't be able to run at full 'n' speed, but they'll certainly work much faster than 'g'.

  • Totally ****** with appleTV and timecapsule, so non-apple

My AppleTV used to work great with my airport extreme, serving content from my desktop, albeit I had to wake the desktop before access if it was asleep. I've "upgraded" to a time capsule, and now life is a ******* misery. Apologies for the language, but it feels like I'm using windows kit. The appleTV loses the sync with the desktop at least once every three days, and the only way out is to delete the one sync, and resync with the exact same computer. How ******* ******** is that? Before I spent hundreds on upgrading to the time capsule, I used to show off my set up to my windows suffering friends. Now i just hang my head in shame at the box of **** i've got sitting next to my computer. Anyone found a way to maintain contact between an AppleTV and a time capsule?

A Time Capsule is just an AirPort Extreme with an internal network hard drive added, the router portion is the same. If you still have the AirPort Extreme, export its settings to your computer and then import the settings file into the Time Capsule and see if that helps.

  • Tc+AppleTV with Mac turned off.

Is it possible to stream video to AppleTV from TimeCapsule with the Mac turned off?

ok, but I understand there's no real streaming on the atv, just syncing. Anyway, I should be able to sync and then watch the synced media with the mac turned off?

  • Apple TV Router 104bits encryption connection issues with laptop

Hi, we have set up a wep-104 encrypted office Wifi (AppleTV with TimeCapsule router) N-band network, WPA2-PSK (AES encryption). Although I set it up as WPA2-PSK, on a wifi sniffer I ran its identified as wep-104 for some reason (104bits, that is).
This wifi has a problem with one of our computers, which uses an external USB wifi adapter, TP-Link TL-WN7200ND USB adapter,  and driver version TL-WN7200ND_WHQL_100730 (I also tried TL-WN7200ND_100513). This computer connects to all other wifis I can throw at it, 64 bit and 128 bit with no prpblems, so I know the adapter is not the issue.  After inserting the password, the adapter just "thinks" for a while and then just goes back to showing "X" on its icon (the computer is using XP but that is irrelevat I think). The adapter has the latest firmware and drivers. Is it possible to switch AppleTV to a more often used 128bit security (it could be this adapter just can't work with 104bit).
    Thanks

Update: if I choose an 8 character password for WEP Transitional security network instead of a 13 character one for WEP/WPA2 Personal, it works. Why is that? thanks

  • Can I save my videos of iTunes in TimeCapsule to watch it in AppleTV without my MacBook? Thanks

I have an AppleTV and I want to buy TimeCapsule 2TB or 3TB. But I have this question: Can I save my videos of iTunes in TimeCapsule to watch it in AppleTV without my MacBook? Thanks

You can change the location of your iTunes Media folder from your MacBook HD to your Time Capsule. This will work, but only if your iTunes library is open Apple TV can access your content over Home Sharing. Apple TV cannot play the videos stored on your Time Capsule without iTunes.
iTunes Match does what you want, only with music: Apple TV streams the song from iCloud without iTunes. Unfortunately videos and movies aren't part of the iCloud service.

  • How to sync existing AppleTV media data onto newly installed TimeCapsule ?

    My configuration is:
    MacBook [model=4,1 / MacOSX v10.5.8]
    AppleTV [model=A1218]
    TimeCapsule [model=A1409]
The TimeCapsule is used for Macbook TimeMachine backups AND it also houses my current iTunes Library [where my iTunes Media directories reside] .
The AppleTV media content is synced with the TimeCapsule -- the "Computers" setting in the AppleTV designates the TC iTL as its link/locked computer .
Then the amber light went on [and stayed on] for the TimeCapsule and the Airport Utility application reported the TC hard disk was damaged .
I bought and installed a new TimeCapsule ; Time Machine backups are now reinstated on the new TC .
How can I reinstate the iTunes Library onto the new TC ?  How can I synchronize the existing AppleTV media data [which includes over 20000 songs] down to the new TC ?  I can use MacBook iTunes app to create a new empty iTunes Library on the new TC but if I modify the AppleTV setting for "Computers" to "unlink" the old TC then won't I lose everything on the AppleTV ?
    HELP !!!
Also, how can I be certain that the backup of my MacBook that has now been created on the new TC via Time Machine is a FULL backup of the MacBook's harddrive and not a partial backup ??

Where is your computer's backup of all important data that should include your iTunes library and should have been created or updated immediately before installing a new OS? Did you lose all important data when doing do or just your iTunes content? The iPhone is not designed or intended to be used as a backup storage device.

  • AppleTV + iTunes library on a NAS = Can't open file

A while ago I moved my iTunes library onto a NSA (specifically a TimeCapsule). With an AppleTV (1) streaming video from my Mac Mini, which in turn was reading the files from the NAS.  This worked pretty much perfectly.
Recently I bought a new NAS, this time its a Netgear.  Watching content on the Mac works fine, watching video on the AppleTV has some issues.  Attempting to play a video says the file can;t be opened.  If I then play the video on the Mac (for a couple of seconds), the AppleTV can then happily play the video (playback is as good as before).  Not the end of the world, but it is kind of annoying.  Espcially as the Mac isn't in the same room.
At first I thought it might be because the network drive wasn't mounted.  This however does not appear to be the problem.  Even after ensuring the drive is mounted (e.g. opening it in Finder), I still see the same behaviour.
Anyone seen something similar?  If so, any suggestions?

Ok, so if you attempt to play the file from the Apple TV1, and it says it can't find it... playing the file on the Mac Mini for a few seconds allows you to play the file on the Apple TV1.  At that moment, is it necessary to repeat the same steps for any other file? or are ALL other files in the same library now accessible?
Either way, this issue seems to be due to something with the Netgear NAS. What specifically we can pinpoint better by looking closer at the behavior of the 3 pieces of this system you have configured.
One thought I had was is there a possibility that the Netgear NAS turns off its drive after a period of inactivity, and once the Mac Mini re-establishes its connection to the NAS then the files are available. This of course would not appear to be the case if you have to open EVERY file on the Mac Mini before it can be played on the Apple TV regardless of whether or not a file was played just before. If playing one file on the Mac Mini gives the Apple TV access to all the files for a period of time thereafter then I'd start off by checking deep into the settings on the Netgear NAS.
Another thing I just thought of is whether your are connecting everything over wireless or is there atleast a wired connection between the NAS and the Mac Mini. Wireless can make things interesting as well.

  • Media Centre and Networking with TimeCapsule

    Hi
I am looking at buying a mac mini as a desktop and also to probably use a media centre also at some point in the near future. I am also intending to get a macbook to use as a laptop / replacement for mini as and when I use it as media centre.
Given I will have 3 computers on the go if I keep my currently old Imac running, I was wondering on the best way to keep everything nicely shared. This is where I thought to use the TimeCapsule to store all the files I am likely to share across the 3 computers.
Is this a good idea or are there superior alternatives to using a TimeCapsule as a 'server'? Are there issues in programs such as iTunes on each machine mapping to 1 shared source for the file?
If this approach is a good one, is it worth my money / effort in getting the 320gb HD or even installing a 500gb 7200rpm HD in the mini if the majority of storage will take place on the TimeCapsule?
Given the sort of use I have in mind for the mini, would I notice the difference if I went for the 2.26 processer and better graphics card?
Think that is all for now, but may be back. Thanks in advance for any guidance.

which iMac do you have, how big is the drive? could you plug in an external drive & ethernet cable from the iMac direct to router? if so, this would save on the TC.

Try it with the iMac first.

You can only have 1 system which can have the iTunes library open directly at any given time. if iTunes is left open on the iMac 24/7, you can then see it as a shared library. iTunes 9 is suppose to be even better with this.
Given the sort of use I have in mind for the mini, would I notice the difference if I went for the 2.26 processer and better graphics card?
for the cost, not sure the .26 is that much of an upgrade. the graphics are NOT upgradeable, you only have the 9400.
also, with the price drop & hacks available, you could pickup an AppleTv instead. it would still talk to the old imac with the library.

  • OSX 10.6.7: No access to TimeCapsule

    Hello
Yesterday I installed the 10.6.7 Update on my Macbook Air (13") and my MacMini. Both are connected wireless to my TimeCapsule. After a while both Macs disconnect from my wireless network and show me the "Choose a wireless network" window. My AppleTV was still connected to the wireless network without problems. I also own a Cisco Hub which is also connected to the same TimeCapsule with Wireless connection. My PC and my printer, both connected to his hub, didn't loose the connection. Also after a restart of both Macs they weren't able to establish a stable connection to the wireless network. I also tried to reboot my TimeCapsule and the connecte Airports.
The situation today is the same. Still no stable connection to wireless.
    Any tips and ideas?
    Best Regards,
    Dominique

I have a similar problem. Configuration is an Mid 2007 20" iMac Aluminium and an Late 2008 13" MB Aluminium adressing via Airport a 2009 TimeCapsule 500 GB with another Harddisk on USB
Both Macs running at last 10.6.6 without any problems ever.
Three days ago I updated the MacBook to 10.6.7 Since then I couldn't adress the TimeCapsule anymore. Choosing it makes the Harddiks start up, but no connection starts and the desktop window fades. I then tried secure startup and repairing rights and it worked once - but after disconnection and idle mode, same again: no connection, even if TimeMachine is starting up. Windows are freezing/fading.
Same behaviour with connections to iMac or WebDAV drives - but not to iDisk.
    Serious problem!

  • Extend Wireless Signal -TimeCapsule 500GB + 2 Express 2009 - Not Work !!

    Hi
In my home, I use a Time Capsule first gen 500GB as Router Acess Point. Attached to it, I have 1 PC Desk(Wired), 1 Playstation3/PSP (Wireless), 1 Brigde Wifi used in my SKY Decoder, 2 Iphone (one Classic and one 3GS), 1 IPAD, 2 Macbook White 2008 and 1 AppleTV 2G.
My Home has many rooms and walls are trick, which reduces the signal. To improve the signal, I bought 2 Airport Express, but never worked properly.
When I put The express to Extends the signal, my macbook stops the TimeMachine Backup, my PS3 don´t logs on network and my And my browsing speed drops dramatically, but the sign of the signal is full.
I use the TimeCapsule as MIX WIFI (802.11N-b/g 2.4ghz), because most of the equipment working in G ( Iphones, PS3, Sky, PSP).
    The configs on TC ( Criate a Wireless Network - WIFI b/g/n 2.4Ghz - Allow it to be expanded - channel 2 - WPA/WPA2 Personal - SSD WIFILNK_N)
The confis on Express 1 and 2 ( Extend a Wireles Network - Same SSID on TC - Allow wifi client - WPA/WPA2 Personal with same Key)
I don´t know what I'm doing wrong, because I tried all modes and settings in Express WDS and Deny Wifi Client Connection)and have the same problem.
I don´t try to put all in True WIFI N (2.4 or 5ghz) because the others equipments.
My last attempt is to share this problem here...

    Welcome to Apple's discussion groups.
What some people do wrong with network extension is to put the extending device too far from the main station. Try moving them to a point half way between the main station and the remote client.
When I put The express to Extends the signal, my macbook stops the TimeMachine Backup, my PS3 don´t logs on network and my And my browsing speed drops dramatically, but the sign of the signal is full.
That menu bar icon just shows you a rough indication of the signal from the nearest access point but doesn't reflect overall throughput. If you hold down an "option" key when you pull down that menu bar icon, you'll see a value for "RSSI", which is a better indicator of the signal strength.
Use the advice in this thread on the Time Capsule to investigate the signal and noise levels that each AirPort Express sees:

I don't know what you mean by "True WiFi".

  • TimeCapsule for combined storage and backkup

    Hi
Currently our mac household consists of:
    2 x macbooks
    1 x apple tv
My macbook's hard drive is constantly full as a result of my apple tv backing up shows to it and a number of home videos in iMovie.
I tried changing my iTunes library to an external HD, but if the HD is not plugged in and I turn on iTunes (to say manage my iPhone) it starts backing up to my laptop again. (It is also a pain to have to plug in an external HD, everytime I want to access the library, especially if my laptop is not at my desk)
I was hoping TimeCapsule could be used the following way...
1/ Provide shared storage space where both MacBooks can setup separate iTunes libraries on the Time Capsule hard drive.
2/ Sync to Apple TV, so all purchases are stored on TC and not our personal laptops.
3/ Plug in an external HD to Time Capsule to actually use the Time Machine software
4/ Using Time Machine, backup content from the two macbooks, apple tv, and files on the Time Capsule HD, to the connected external HD. (This way, I can just plug in the external HD once a week to do a Time Machine backup)
Hope this makes sense and someone can advise if this is possible.
Just looking for a neat, wireless solution to manage all our files in one place.
    Many thanks
    Parker

OK. Yes, the TC could be used only for data storage as opposed to a TM backup drive. The drive you plan to use for TM will need to accommodate the two Macs with 160 GB drives each (would you plan to put in larger drives anytime soon?) AppleTV has either a 40 or 160 GB drive. Assuming the larger one then you have 480 GBs on the three hard drives meaning you need at least a 1 TB drive for TM. However, if you expect to put larger drives in the two Macs, then you should plan ahead for that, and perhaps get a 2 TB drive for backup so you have future capacity.
Now you also should make plans for backing up the TC. Will you do that separately or do you plan to use the TM backup drive to backup the TC's drive? If you plan to use the TM drive for this, then you need to factor in the TC's drive capacity into the capacity needed for the TM backup drive.
Now this in part is why you may wish to use the TC for the TM backup, because it's much easier to add future storage extenrally then in the TC. The TC may be perfect for handling the two Macs and the AppleTV. External devices may prove better for your storage needs. For example two 1 TB drives can be configured in a mirrored RAID such that one drive is a backup for the other, and this is handled transparently through the RAID configuration. Just some additional things to think about (or confuse the matter. )

  • TS4526 Cable, internet, Netflix, iTunes library. Can use Amazon Video for iTunes library? Other program? OR Must have AppleTV  for iTunes library?

I have purchases from iTunes movies and TV. I can play Netflix and Amazon TV. I also have TIVO thru which i connect my TV. .Amazon indicates that it can download iTunes. Can I use Amazon to play my iTunes purchases OR must I have an AppleTV device?
Also have 3 yr old large screen VIZIO hd TV. If I have to have an ATV, can I connect it through an hdmi on side panel? Or do I have to use a rear hdmi connection? How do I then connect CABLE>TIVO>TV and ATV?
Too many hdmi cables, not snuff hardware knowledge!

    Anyone with experience?
I think what you mean is that it's not possible for two Macs to access the same iTunes library (ie. the same collection of media files) at the same time. From my research, this seems to be the case, and that's not my issue.
In my particular situation -- one that i'm sure is shared by many others -- my partner and i have separate user accounts on the same Mac, +entirely sharing a single iTunes Library+ (ie. same media files, same playlists, etc., as if we were a single user) and as long as we remember to quit iTunes whenever we walk away from the Mac (allowing the other to log in and launch iTunes and access our common library), this is not a problem.
And that is when my particular problem arises: when we launch iTunes, we are often asked to choose a Library (a series of navigations that my partner isn't entirely comfortable with), and occasionally the Data folder on the TimeCapsule is unavailable.
As for the wireless connection to our library, this has not so far proven to be an issue. Depending on what other activities are going on at the time (ie. TimeMachine backups or background Internet activity, i presume), i have only rarely experienced brief interruptions in music streaming from the TimeCapsule (<1 second). In fact, last night, we watched a movie on the laptop, with the file streaming from the TimeCapsule, and it only hesitated a few times, and again for less than a second.

  • 2TB Time Capsule or External Hard Drive for use with Mac MINI and AppleTV

    Hi,
My current setup is I have a 1TB Hard Drive linked to my intel Mac Mini via FireWire 400, the Mini shares my music and films through iTunes so that my AppleTV can pick them up.
All devices are connected to an AEBS 802.11n (early model) via Cat6 Gigabit cables.
As I have run out of space and am looking for a bigger drive, I wanted to know if I would be able to use the 2TB Time Capsule to hold my films and be able to stream them to the Mac Mini so that it may stream them through iTunes to the AppleTV.
The theory of if should work, as the devices are all Gigabit capable and connected by high quality Cat6 leads their shouldn't be network bandwith issues, I am just unsure of how quickly the TimeCapsule can read stored data from a hard drive and transmit, some of my films are HD and run 4GB plus.
The obvious answers is just to buy a bigger hard drive with FW400, however I would like to reduce the number of boxes I have under the TV, I plan to upgrade my AEBS to the latest one anyway so just thought it made sense to explore this option.
looking forward to hearing what you have to say.

    Hello,
It should work in theory, but the disk access time of the TC is much slower. I was setup like you are with an external drive connected to a Mini via FW and I had true Gigabit transfer between computers.
When my hard drive failed I sold my Linksys gigabit router and bought a TC to reduce the number of boxes, but I soon learned that the read/write speed on a TC is a little bit faster than on a thumb drive! Not that great. All my machines are also connected with Cat6.
It's still OK to watch a movie though, but transferring 10+ Gb is a pain.
