? AppleTV vs.Cable TV

?Can AppleTV be used alongside Cable TV?  If so, am I supposed to hook up the HDMI cable from the Apple TV directly to the TV or is it supposed to go to the DVR box?

Yes.

I've never personally seen a cable/DVR box with an HDMI input.  Even if there was one, it would make no logical sense to connect the ATV to it.
Connect the ATV directly to the TV or to an A/V receiver (if you have one).

Just for the record, Apple TV was meant to be updated directly.
I have always updated mine this way and have never had an issue.

    Hello Olivia06
If you are unable to get your rental to work properly, the only way to solve the issue is to report it to the iTunes Store.

  • AppleTV, iMac and Airplay mirroring

I'm having a strange issue with Airplay mirroring from an iMac Late 2012 (10.9.1) to AppleTV (both 2nd and 3rd generation).
When I turn Airplay mirroring on the iMac says connected, Console is not showing any errors and the TV goes and stays black.
Now I'm trying the same on a Macbook Air Mid 2011 (10.9.1) and everything works fine, both WiFi and using the same Ethernet cable I was using with the iMac. I'm also trying with a Mac Mini, Late 2012 (10.9.1) which works without any issues too.
Regardless of TV (Samsung and Philips) connected to the AppleTV, HDMI cable. Also tried both WiFi and wired.
    Any ideas anyone?
    Thanks,
    Daniel

Some further info after advanced testing.
If I go into iTunes start a video and chose Airplay everything plays correctly on the TV. The only thing that doesn't seem to work is Airplay mirroring.
    Thanks for any ideas,
    Daniel

  • AppleTV to analog

    HELLO
I recently connected my ATV to a digital to analog converter (Sanoxy APGtek) from Amazon. Everything seems to be connected properly to my Onkyo receiver and on but no sound. I also noted that when I connected the RCA cables to the converter, I got some humming feedback when I started to plug them in. I still have the hdmi out from the apple tv plugged in.
I haave some rca cables and hdmi coming from my directtv box and the rca cables play just fine in my Zone 2, If I substitute them into the same input for the appletv rca cables, no sound.
It does not make sense if what I am reading is correct about the ATV sending digital and analog via the toslink at the same time.
I believe it has something to do with the signal or lack therreof coming from the ATV....ANY SUGGESTIONS?
The whole reason I wanted to do this was to airplay to my zone 2 outside, which has to be a non-digital source...thank you.

Ah...thanks for taking a stab at it though.
I did figure it out. I had a bad optical cable. Using converter to zone 2 to using RCA cables works fine now AND transmits over hdmi and optical at the same time.
    THANKS

  • No Sound between LG tv and Apple TV

I have tried almost everything! Just purchased AppleTv3, set it up and have perfect picture but no sound. Read many forums and tried many things eg: new hdmi cable, all hdmi ports, different TV And when I did this all works perfectly! Bring it back to my TV no sound. Tested another device, Boxee and all works ok, picture and sound good. Turned off Dolby in both Apple TV and TV, I am using AirVideo and can't find many settings there but looked anyway. Tried all settings ion TV just don't know what else to do!
In short by setting up on another TV I believe I have prove AppleTv and cables are ok, so it's something to do with TV? Does anyone know if there is a comparability problem with LG and AppleTv? Any other help, any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

I have an LG 42PG60UD. I just bought an appletv3 recently and I had exactly the same issue. I live in Australia.
    PROBLEM:
Plugged the appletv directly to TV via HDMI. Video worked well but no sound. I don't have a receiver.
    TROUBLESHOOTING:
    I tried the following:
    1. Changed HDMI cable, even bought an Apple HDMI cable: Still no sound
    2. Turned off dolby digital: Still no sound
    3. Reset Apple TV to factory default: Still no sound
    4. Tried AppleTV on my crappy LCD TV in the back room: (Sound & Video) worked perfectly.
This wasn't a solution for me because I wanted the AppleTV to work on my LG TV at the front. So I went to drastic measures and bought a converter for HDMI to RCA (composite). BIG MISTAKE! DO NOT TRY THIS! because quality was terrible, luckily I was able to return it.
    SOLUTION:
I was just about to give up, when I thought I'd play with the settings one more time.
Kept everything as default but changed the Screen Resolution via the settings menu
    Audio & Video> TV Resolution> Auto (changed to 1080p 50hz)
Looked like it was picking up 1080p 60hz which my TV didn't like. I don't know how it affects the audio but right after changing that setting the sound worked right away.
SOLVED!!!!!!!! Well for me. I hope this fixes your issues too. Might even solve it for issues with your receiver too.

  • Macbook Air to Tv

    Hi all, newbie here.
Recently brought my MBA, now I want to connect it to my TV to watch films etc.
I've been told there are two different ways of doing this, thunderbolt to HDMI OR Apple TV 3rd Gen.
I want to know, what the differences are? And which is reccommended? Am I right to believe that they both do the exact same job except for the ATV3 is wireless?
    Many Thanks,
    Em.

The realistic super-easy way is an AppleTV,  no cables no fuss no mess.
also for $100 you get tons of free content, free movie previews, free podcasts, free music.......etc. on AppleTV
Also use the APP called BEAMER to wifi beam movies to the Apple TV from the computer while still using the Mac.
Just airplay, say,...YOUTUBE from the macbook AIr to the AppleTV, great fun.  Best $100 of fun that can be had.
I use this setup and there is nothing that comes closer to perfection than this
The AppleTV has a power cord and an HDMI cord to the TV..... In which case you can get a MD to HDMI cable.
    use one of these dongles

  • Does't sean to work with my TV

I recently got a apple tv but it doesn't appear to work with my TV. The TV is about two years old and I have no idea what the resolution is! I assume it is 480i but I am not sure. When the apple tv is on all I get is distorted Black and white images, any one know what I need to do?

    John
You need to provide more detail about how you are connecting the thing to your TV.
Specifically, does your TV have component or HDMI inputs?
Apple TV does not support composite/S-VHS.
Component inputs are a set of 3 RCA sockets coloured red, green and blue - these 3 are purely for the video signals - no audio amongst them. It's possible you are just connecting one of these 3 to a standard composite (yellow) socket on the TV (an the other 2 to the TV audio input sockets) which could give you a B&W signal- others have mistakenly done this.
If it's using a HDMI connection, then given that HDMI is a relatively new format, some TVs don't handle the connection as well as they should - most do so this is unlikely but you could do a Google on yoyt TV brand and HDMI to see if theer are any known issues.
Look at basic hints and tips at:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305175
    Specifically from theer:
    ==========================================================
If your TV screen appears fuzzy or black (you see no video)
    * When you connect power, check to make sure the LED turns on. If the LED is not on, then verify with a known good power outlet or connect something else to the outlet you're using for Apple TV and make sure it works (such as a lamp or clock).
    * Make sure you're using the correct video cables and that they are connected firmly to Apple TV and to your TV.
    * Make sure the input setting you've selected on your TV matches the input you have your video cables connected to. See the documentation that came with your TV for more information.
    * If you are connected via HDMI, try unplugging and replugging your HDMI cable.
    * If HDMI isn't working for you - then try component instead. Read more about HDMI vs component video.
If your TV screen still appears fuzzy or black, you may need to select a video mode your TV supports.
    To select a video mode:
    1. Press and hold both Menu and Menu up/scroll on the Apple Remote for about 6 seconds. Apple TV will cycle through different display resolutions.
    2. When Apple TV reaches an acceptable display resolution and "If you can see the Apple logo, select OK" appears on your TV screen, press the Play button on the Remote.
    ===========================================================
    Other possible issues:
    - faulty AppleTV
    - faulty TV inputs
    - faulty connection cables (try another id possible)
If you have a friend with a component/HDMI equipped TV try connecting AppleTV to their set to try and narrow down the problem to the AppleTV box/cabling or your TV set.
Depending on where you purchased it, if you are confident you have all the right cables / connections and are stuck then it'd be more than reasonable to take it back to the store to see if it's faulty.
    Good luck.

  • HT1600 This update fails every time, even when rebooting, cache clearing, etc...

Anyone else having troubles with this update installing? My Apple TV just said it is available today (12/07/2012) so tried to update. Each time it goes through the entire 1 of 2 process and then fails. Message appears saying to restart the device and try again. After restarting and trying again I get the same message. Tried clearing the cache and retrying. Still fails. Any other thoughts???

I have followid information found on another forum and have managed to successfully install the update. It appears the issue is tied to the Ethernet connection. Strange, usually the problems I have with my Apple TV3 are related to using Wi-Fi rather than connecting via the Ethernet Cable.
At this point I have tried the following:
Reboot the device as suggested by the on screen information. (no resolution)
Clear the cache and reboot. (no resolution)
Unplug the AppleTV power cable and let sit three minutes before repowering. (no resolution)
Unplug the Ethernet Cable and connect to the Internet via Wi-Fi. (solves the problem)
Apple needs to test these updates a little further and make sure they work on all methods of connecting. The issue should have been remedied quickly by either fixing the patch or at minimum sending us an E-Mail notifying us of the error. In fact, why am I not getting an E-Mail letting me know that a new version of software is out? Isn't that one of the things we opt-in for when signing up for accounts?

  • Question--How to get streaming video?

I have a MBP with 10.6.8., 1.66 intel, 4 GB/ 1067 Mhz DDR3 memory.  We have wireless and I have been informed that we don't use a fraction of our capacity. Nevertheless I dan't get streaming video. I get the audio and the video has to catch up.  I use Airport.  I have ignored thisproblem until now as I seldom bother with Youtube, etc. but now I would like to watch work-related video.  Any ideas?  I am a perpetual novice.

    well if wireless appletv
if cable is no problem then you can just use the digital AV out connetor for the ios devices

  • Buying new Apple TV

I am living temporarily in Dubai. My iTunes account is an US account. Do you recommend to buy Apple TV from Dubai and bring later with me to the US? Or better to ask my brother in the US to send me one? Is there hardware difference other than the power cable pins?

it's the same hardware so unless it's much cheaper in usa then it would make 100% no difference
not sure about the ac system in dubai but the appletv power cable is 100% the same cable as my old ps2 and my old cd player and much other consumer electronics

Get an HDMI switcher. Plug in the ATV directly to the TV and then use the switcher on the other input.

Audio cable help for the new AppleTV.
Currently I have an original AppleTV with audio RCA plugs to mini plug into my BOSE speakers.
The 2nd Gen AppleTv has a Toslink input. I've looked at cables of Toslink to optical mini. Will this cable work? The optical mini part I'm not sure of what it is.
Thanks so much. The monitor I use doesn't have speakers.
This is the cable I see at Amazon

If I understand your question correctly, you want to connect your Apple TV2 to your Bose system using a mini plug.
You will need an optical to digital coax RCA converter (find it on Ebay about $15), then you can connect your mini cable. Here is a link to one I recently bought on Ebay: http://fwd4.me/nrQ

  • HT4366 Will appletv work if connected to the DirecTV cable box instead of the TV?

My tv is mounted on the wall so I don't want to have the hdmi cable hanging down the wall to the appletv.  Will it work if I plug it into my cable box?

The Apple TV connects to a spare HDMI port on your TV. It has nothing to do with your DVR.
