AppleTV won't play Twilight HD

Hi,
I purchased Twilight HD from iTunes Store for my wife and daughter. I have sync-ed to my AppleTV more than once. I have updated my TV resolution to 1080p in the settings menu. The movie will not play. My AppleTV will not play this movie. It shows the main screen with 'play movie', 'Scene selections', 'special features' and 'more'. If I click on 'play movie', it does nothing.
Thanks,
Biff

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums.
It sounds as though you are playing a movie with itunes extras. Unfortunately itunes extras does not always work very well on the tv.
When selecting the movie from your movie list, click and hold the play button down until you are given the option to play the movie directly without going through the 'extras' features.

  • AppleTV won't play netflix programs

Netflix works on my IPad but won't mirror to Apple TV. Other Apps work, e.g. PBS, Vimeo,  on Apple TV, only the Netflix programs won't play on the Apple TV.
    What should I do?  Thanks

Same issue here. Any feedback? Some prior posts suggest that if any of your sub-accounts (profiles) have an ampersand in them, that kills the streaming on an ATV (so don't call your profile "name & name" for instance).
I've been on the phone multiple times with Netflix. They blame the ISP (rediculous since all other devices on our network stream just fine). I've done all they've asked for (cylced the ATV, reset the ATV, cycled the router, etc.). No change.
The software on the ATV is up to date also. Issue started maybe a month ago?
    What's going on?!?

  • AppleTV won't play movie trailers...

As per the subject, if I try viewing trailers from the rent or buy sections on Apple TV they play fine, but if I go to the movie trailers section and try to view the trailer for Avatar for example I get an error about the file type not being recognised, I know there's a similar problem on the Quick area of the forums but thought I'd mention it here too.

I phoned Applecare about this issue on Saturday (after wasting a morning resetting, then re-resetting ATV and iTunes). The guy told me that they'd had lots of calls about the streaming trailers issue, so he assumed that it was a "technical problem with the streaming servers, but we have no engineers available to look at it right now".
It's now Monday, and I still can't stream the trailers, so I assume they're having real problems.
Pity they can't send a message to ATV owners that explains that they're having problems, but are working on the case. That would have saved hours of frustration trying to figure out what's wrong.
    Bob.

    any ideas?
All software (inc apple tv is up to date)
    cheers
    dc

Have you uploaded it to a Photo gallery?
Someone posted the other day that videos ib Photo Galleries don't work but do if uploaded as videos.
I can certainly view MobileMe videos I made ages ago on AppleTv.
I'd be surprised if the iPhone video format is wrong for AppleTV, as it adds another argument for iPhones users to get MobieMe, but you never know....

  • AppleTV 2.0: Won't Play TV Shows

I downloaded and installed the 2.0 update. When I choose a TV show from my existing library it won't play it and returns an error message that it is in an incorrect format. All of my TV shows were purchased from the iTunes Store, so how can it be an incorrect format?
Not impressed with the update. I hate that it groups all media together regardless of whether it is located on the AppleTV hard drive, my MacBook hard drive or my external drive.

    mine are playing OK.
but the listing is all screwed!!!
it's listing all the episodes for every show in one huge list.. and it showing the actual show name instead of the episode name.

  • I am getting the following error during the play of a rented movie from my MacBook that i am trying to watch on AppleTV Could not play the rental "A Thousand Words" because it is authorized to play on another computer or device." any ideas?

I am getting the following error during the play of a rented movie from my MacBook that i am trying to watch on AppleTV Could not play the rental “A Thousand Words” because it is authorized to play on another computer or device." any ideas?

Rentals can only play on one device/computer at a time.  Have you tried to play on the computer and still have that window open?
Have you transferred the rental to iPod/iPhone or iPad to watch?
If it won't play anywhere contact iTunes support at:

  • I have a first generation apple tv synced to a itunes library on an external USB drive. Movies and Music Won't Play

Here's my setup. First Generation Apple TV. G4 Powermac running OS X 10.5.8 iTunes 10 with the Library stored on an External 3 Terabyte USB 2 drive. It's plugged into a PCI USB 2 card. Everything worked fine till I transferred my iTunes library to the external USB drive. Things seem to sync up fine. I have it set to copy TV shows to the Apple TV's internal drive and that seems to work but when I try to play music or movies that are streaming from the library, I get an error. With movies I get the "The selected video cannot be played. The format was not recognized." error. The movie and music list seems up to date but now it won't play. Did I waste my money on this external drive? How do I get this setup to work?

I don't think this will be a complete answer to your question, but may point you in the right direction.
I have a similar setup (same OS X and iTunes versions), but my library is on a network attached 2TB harddrive (vs a USB 2 drive). Mine works fine, both syncing (which you don't have a problem with) and streaming. It's possible that iTunes doesn't like the USB 2 drive, but I don't know. Are you able to watch TV shows on your PowerMac after having moved the files to the USB drive? If you can watch content on your laptop but not on your AppleTV, it suggests the Apple TV doesn't like the USB drive.
Perhaps you didn't transfer iTunes library content correctly. (Forgive me if I'm telling you things you already know.) The iTunes library consists of a list of content and it's location (local harddrive, network drive, etc.). If you simply moved the files, but didn't actually update the library with the new locations, this can explain why you can't stream the content. The Apple TV displays what is in the library, but cannot play it if the library entry is pointing to the wrong location. Note: This "library update" I'm referring to is not the same as simply changing the iTunes media folder location in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced.
When I moved my content to an external drive, I had to delete everything in my iTunes Library, then re-import everything (File > Add to library). Don't let the phrase "delete everything in my iTunes library" freak you out. Deleting entries in the library is not the same as deleting the files (which you definitely do NOT want to do).
If you select an item in your iTunes library and press the Delete button, it asks for confirmation thus:
Are you sure you want to delete the selected TV show from your iTunes library?
It's OK to answer "Delete TV Show". It will then ask you if you want to delete the file. Do NOT delete the file. You can select your entire library and delete everything at once, just make sure you do NOT delete the files when it asks. When that is done, make sure the iTunes Media Folder Location is set to where you want and that the files are there. Then, go to File, Add to Library and re-import everything. It will take several minutes to more than an hour, depending on the speed of your computer and the size of your library.
I have had to do this everytime I've moved my library to different storage devices. If there is a simpler way, I am not aware of it.
    I hope this helps.

  • HT3209 Movie rental that won't play?!

Irented a movie from the iTunes store and it said it was ready to watch even though it hasn't completely downloaded and this is usually not a problem. But it won't play. If I move the button on the time ie to 10 minutes into the movie it shows the content is there, but it just wont play. Ive tried restarting my computer and re connecting to my wifi and force quitting the program but nothing seems to work!

If you used AppleTV while it was bufering say to browse movies/trailers or anything else it will often clear the dwonload to use the memory for other things - not good if on a slow connection.
    Your options are:
1 - Reduce quality of rental to SD in iTunes store section of Settings.
SD needs 2.5 Mbps for near instant playback, 720p HD 6 Mbps and 1080p 8Mbps.
2 - Rent in iTunes on a computer then with iTunes running on the same newtork play the rental under the Computers icon where your Home Shared iTunes library appears - a rental category appears when a rental has fully downoaded.  iTunes keeps a download for up to 30 days or until the view period has ended once you start to play.
3 - faster internet - probably not possible
4 - rent on an iPAd or iPhone and Airplay to AppleTV
The 24/48 hour view period only starts ticking when you actually view the film - you may be ok, but if not contact iTunes Store support and explain the problem/request a refund and try again.

  • Video won't play in Keynote

I made a keynote presentation on my MacBook Pro that contains a video. The presentation works fine on my MacBook and when I open it on my iPad in the Keynote App. However, it won't play when I connect my iPad to Apple TV. So I can watch the video fine if I just want to see it myself on the iPad, but in order to do my presentation, I need it to play over the AppleTV which it won't do. Help!

I think I should say that this was after using the "Duplicate" from the previous week. Slides with backgrounds still played from previous week before the update...

  • HD export to AppleTV won't work

Hello everyone. Trying to get the HD content shot with my new Sony HDR-CX7 our of my camcorder and into my Apple TV. I can do it no problem with the AppleTV preset in iMovie but that only gives me 960x540 resolution. In Quicktime, I tried H.264, 1280x720 HD, 5000 kbit/s and 24 fps with AAC audio. Still, AppleTV won't accept it. Any help would be appreciated.

There seems to be a problem (or misinformation) during the Quicktime export.
The framerate you select in the export does not seem to be the frame rate of the video output (It must be keeping whatever the project or imported files frame rate is.
I have tried all sorts of 720p exports at 2000-5000 kbps rates. I set the frame rate to 24 and then to 15, created .mov and .mp4 output files and nothing worked.
If I go back and look at each file in a video player like VLC (or anything that displays the files detailed information)
......the files all end up being 29.97 frames per second (regardless of what I selected during export)!
This is why my and your HD exports arent playing on our appleTV. Im gonna play around more, not sure if its an imovie import setting or a imovie project setting.

  • 1st Gen Apple TV won't play iTunes purchased movie

I purchased a movie (not HD) on iTunes and cannot play it on my 1st gen Apple TV.  My older movies are still there to be viewed.  Any thoughts?

Does it appear in the movie list on the AppleTV1 but won't play?  Does it give an error?
Try purchasing something on AppleTV1 direct - check in iTunes you may find a free episode of a TV Show or similar.  I had an issue last year with new content until I purchased something else on AppleTV - i assumed it was some kind of authorisation getting updated.

  • Apple TV won't play TV shows that are fully downloaded in my library.

    Hi,
My Apple TV won't play TV shows that are fully downloaded in my library.  It says it will take 6 hours to load a 50 minute episode.  It suggests to change the picture resolution, yet this till says it will take hours to uplaod.  Is anyone else having this problem, and how do I fix it?  I only bought the thing last week, and really feel ripped off.  Thanks in advance.

Well, if the size of my iPhoto library is the problem, I would have hoped that Apple would have mentioned that when we were on the phone for two hours. But yes, that is a possibility. I have about 260 events containing about 26,000 photos.
I agree, they should now what kind of limitations might apply.
Again, the issue may not be iPhoto per se, but something in iTunes or the interface between the two that just struggles above a certain number of files.
I was able to view photos before I upgraded my apple TV to v3 software but it was not reliable. Sometimes it worked, sometimes not. And it was always slow.
There were occasional posts about people with slow performance on AppleTV who had huge music libraries - not in terms of storage size, just overall numbers of songs/albums etc.
AppleTV is not a particularly high spec device compared to any modern computer so long lists of music files or photos/events might overload it. Trouble is here, itunes is just flat refusing to recognise your photos to even attempt to stream them.

  • APPLE TV Great but TED talks won't play anymore

My wife and I have been thoroughly enjoying the TED talks. So much so we bought AppleTv (1st generation) for the kitchen just to watch them while we cook. Recently some of the newer episodes won't play. In fact they actually cause my AppleTV to lock up which is only resolved by unplugging the AppleTV and restarting.
    This is very frustrating.
If I open the files in Quictime and look at the specs the only difference I can see appears to be resolution specs: the old resolution was 850x480, where the newer talks are 853 or 854 x480. Is this what is screwing them up? I don't know...but I sure wish they'd fix the darn things.

    applefish wrote:
Actually..I wasn't blaming Apple...apologies if it felt that way I didn't mean that. Of course, there was always a chance it DID have something to do with them.
But I will say if they're not conforming to Apple specs I would have expected either that Apple would have told them so on their end or, at the very least, they would like to hear from their customers there was an issue so they could pass it along and get them to shape up a bit.
that said..I have dropped them a line about this. But I believe on "attacking" on two fronts.
anyone can add any podcast to the library. the appletv gives access to the complete podcast library and not specifically just appletv compatible podcasts.
apple has no input into what people produce and make available.

  • Rented a movie, won't play, gets error message. Running latest version of AppleTV2.

After renting a movie it shows up as rented with 29 days to go, but when I hit play I get An error occurred while loading this content. Try again later. I've checked my time zone - ok, logged out of iTunes and back in, rebooted AppleTV. Still can't play movie. Any thoughts on what to do next? And, how can I get a refund on this rental if it won't play?

I appreciate you're frustrated with the situation but it's hardly 'Snarky' telling you the truth regarding your specific comment.  I've offered an answer elsewhere - I've just checked and it still lists Apple TV rental for me, though the item may not appear if you've not had the e-mail detailing your purchases yet.
In iTunes on your computer log into your account.
Under Account Information>Purchase History it should list your purchases.
Select the problem purchase/purchases form the list, and it should list them with 'Report a Problem' as a button to click on the bottom.

  • Rented movie via iMac, moved to Apple TV, won't play, just says Authorizing

I tried to rent a movie from iTunes Store via my Apple TV earlier this evening, as I've done several times previously. But the screen just said Authorizing with the spinning gear. The movie never downloaded.
Instead I downloaded it to my iMac and moved it to my Apple TV--the first time I've tried to rent a movie via my computer. I selected the movie on Apple TV, however, but it won't play. Again, it says Authorizing with the spinning gear.
I verified that the AppleTV is connected to my network and the Internet and I re-entered my iTunes Store information. But it still doesn't work.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

On going problems with apple's server all of today. All I recommend is you just try again tomorrow and it should work. I know i''d frustrating with it being a movie and evrything but I don't think there is much else you can do.
