AppleWorks 5 Library to AppleWork 6 Clippings

At work we have a coloured iMac (OS 9) with AppleWorks 5.
I like the Library (clip art) which it has.
Is it possible to transfer/copy the Libray contents into Clippings (AppleWorks 6) on an intel iMac? There is no firewire on the early iMac. It is not on a network or internet connected, and no CD burner. But I do have the original CDs with the Application on it.
All help gratefully received, simple steps please!

From the AppleWorks 6 Help:
To add a folder of items to Clippings (such as a ClarisWorks 5 or AppleWorks 5 library folder):
• In the Finder desktop, drag the folder to the Clippings folder (in the AppleWorks 6 folder). AppleWorks 5 libraries must remain at the main level of the Clippings folder.
The AppleWorks 5 Libraries added this way will be locked tabs meaning you can't add to them in AppleWorks 6, but each item will be available.
The other way to transfer these clips is very time-consuming. You would need to place each clip in an AppleWorks 5 document, draw is best, & you can use one for each Library. Then open the AW 5 document in AppleWorks 6 & select each item, one at a time, & add them to the AppleWorks 6 clippings. You would likely want to re-name them as well.

  • Cannot open Appleworks at all

When I try to open Appleworks it doesn't do anything. It pretends like it will open but then doesn't. I can't tell where it is getting hung up. I tried to use Peggy's advice and delete the preferences but that didn't work. I don't have it on my dock. Any help would be great. Thanks!

For others reference this is the original post I started with from Peggy..
--The best, first step in trouble-shooting a misbehaving application is to delete its preference files. Preference files often become corrupted through no fault of the user - it just happens. Although it sounds scary or drastic to do this, it can only help the application. When any application is launched, it looks for its preference files. If it doesn't find any (just like the very first time you started AppleWorks) it will build new ones.
First, quit AppleWorks if it is running. In all instances, you don't want to trash the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bar. You will need to reset any preferences you had changed, but AppleWorks' preferences are simple.
]•In OS X you want to move the AppleWorks preferences found in HD/Users/username/Library/Preferences/AppleWorks & the com.apple.appleworks.plist found in ~/Library/Preferences/ to the Trash, then empty the Trash & restart AppleWorks.
]•In OS 8-9, the preference files to Trash are found in HD/System Folder/Preferences/AppleWorks. Then empty the Trash & restart AppleWorks.
Should AppleWorks still not work as before or expected, the next step is to make sure AppleWorks and the necessary support files are installed and where AppleWorks "expects" to find them.
]It is not uncommon for users to move the AppleWorks application from the AppleWorks 6 folder to a more convenient location, separating it from its necessary folders - AppleWorks Essentials, Clippings & Starting Points. The AppleWorks 6 application & the above mentioned folders must be in a folder named AppleWorks 6. Not keeping all these "parts" together will
"break" translators, spell check, updaters, etc. If you do want to have AppleWorks available in another spot, make an alias from the File menu and put the alias wherever you'd like. You can even have several aliases.
]If you cannot find all of the "parts" or have inadvertently deleted some, you will need to reinstall AppleWorks using the "Easy Install" option. There is no need to remove the existing AppleWorks files, the installer will merely install what is missing. --
I am quite puzzled by the fact that my harddrive is full. I use the laptop mainly for the internet. I am a stay at home mom so I don't have huge data on my computer. I guess it came with like 60 G and I only have about 4 left. That is crazy to me. Where did it all go??? I have about a years worth of pictures and maybe 100 songs but the only program I have added is the full version of photoshop which isn't even a Gig. I seriously have saved maybe 20 documents on this thing. I run Quicken and use the calender but it just seems so crazy that it would be full already!!!!

  • CANNOT Open AppleWorks 6 application

    Hello,
    URGENT SITUATION:
I have been using this application for some time and lately it stared acting strange, and now tells me "You cannot open the application AppleWorks 6 because it may be damaged or incomplete".
I have no idea what I could have done to damage it, or what that means. I do know that my computer probably has too much memory in use but all my other applications work OK. I also have many files using AW6. Please help me, this data is very important!
    Thank you, Rhino123

    Hi Rhino,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
If the error message is to be believed, it would appear that your AppleWorks application file has become damaged. Before reinstalling it from the installation disk(s) that came with your (pre intel) Mac Mini, try these basic trouble-shooting steps:
    1. Have you moved the AppleWorks 6 application out of the AppleWorks 6 folder? If so, move it back to that folder.
The AppleWorks 6 folder should be at top level inside the Applications folder on your hard drive, and must contain the application, and the AppleWorks Essentials, Clippings and Starting Points folders. There may be other items in this folder, but these 4 are essential.
    2. A common cause of AppleWorks not working correctly (or not working at all) is corrupted preferences files (although this does not usually generate the alert you reported). In the Finder, go to Mac HD > Users > yourname > Library > Preferences
Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist
Find and open the AppleWorks folder at this location. Delete the two cache files and the preferences file it contains. If you have made changes to the Button Bar, you may wish to keep that file, otherwise delete it as well. AppleWorks will create new, clean copies of these files as they are needed.
    3. Another common cause of AppleWorks slowing significantly or failing to launch is the Recent Items bug. (Again, this bug does not usually generate the alert you report.) AppleWorks is sensitive to the number of items in the Recent Items folder it keeps for each user. In the Finder, go to Mac HD > Users > yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items.
Delete all or most of the items in this folder. The items are aliases to files you have saved. Deleting them has no effect on the actual file.
If none of these helps, I would suggest reinstalling AppleWorks from your original disks. Note that a reinstall does NOT replace or repair files outside the AppleWorks 6 folder.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Appleworks Launch Failure

The application "Appleworks" could not be launched because of a shared library error:
    "%<Appleworks><Appleworks><CarbonLib>"
This is the message I get upon launching, and hopefully there's a quick fix to this. I'm using Appleworks 6.2 on a G4 Quicksilver with OS 10.3.9.

As far as I know, carbonlib is not a component of AppleWorks but a component of Mac OS Classic.
    Macintosh HD:System folder:Extensions:CarbonLib
    the current version is FU1-1.6.1
Something bothers me because, as far as I know, when you run 10.3.9 there is no reason explaining why AppleWorks run in its "classic" version.
I've followed these suggestions, but there was no Appleworks folder or a file named com.apple.plist when I looked in the Home -> Library -> Preferences folder.
These items are created by the program itself. As you can't launch it on a new install, it's normal that they are missing.
I recently installed AppleWorks 6.0.4 on my G4 running 10.4.11 and don't get the described behavior.
May you check the contents of the MacOS folder which you saw in the application's package.
I know that some old users emptied it when they used the program under MacOS 9.
    Its normal contents is:
    AppleWorks 6
    and three aliases:
    AppleWorks Essentials
    Clippings
    Starting Points
    They are pointing to:
    <startupVolume>:Applications:AppleWorks 6:AppleWorks Essentials
    <startupVolume>:Applications:AppleWorks 6:Clippings
    <startupVolume>:Applications:AppleWorks 6:Starting Points
which are three required folder (with their contents).

  • Appleworks won't save DB file as ASCII

My AppleWorks Database won't save the file as an ASCII (for export) Save As, only offers AppleWorks and Claris Works options. I know in the past ASCII was an option, but for some reason no longer?
    I am running AW 6.2.9 on a PowerPC G5 running 10.5.8.

Did you move the AppleWorks application from the AppleWorks 6 folder, separating it from its necessary folders - AppleWorks Essentials, Clippings & Starting Points? The AppleWorks 6 application & the above mentioned folders must be in a folder named AppleWorks 6 & this folder must be at the first level of the Applications folder. Not keeping all these "parts" together will break translators, spell check, updaters, etc.

There is no way you are using AppleWorks 6 in OS X 10.7 (Lion). The last version of OS X that can run PowerPC apps is Snow Leopard, 10.6.x.

    Hello,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive & clear caches.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
    If that doesn't help...
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when trying to open AW6.

  • Replacement for Appleworks Clippings

Does Pages have a replacement for Appleworks Clippings? If so, where do I find it? And better still, does it have an equivalent to Word's AutoText feature, with drop-down picklists?
    Cheers, Simon

    You might look into EazyDraw.
It's reported able to open AppleWorks Draw documents, and the "Draw" name would indicate it handles vector drawings.
That would save at least one step in the process.

  • Replacement for Appleworks clippings organizer

My dear mother loves Appleworks, and is a devout user of its clippings feature. She has over 1000 clippings in there right now, and is dreading the OS update that will disable Appleworks to the point that it no longer becomes useable.
Has anyone found a more recent compatible application or way to export such a collection of images such that she will still be able to retrieve, edit and add to them?
I have found nothing out there that does this on a mass scale - the closest is the one-by-one manual method of placing the clipping into an Appleworks document, copying it from there to the clipboard and pasting that into your image organizer of choice. Not only would this be very tedious, but the image format conversion process involved means the resulting extracted graphics no longer scale well.
    Any advice is much appreciated.

  • Clippings in AppleWorks 6

I have been using the seach feature in the clippings for years and love it! Suddenly it isn't showing the graphics when I do a search. The dialogue box appears that indicates that the search is happening and show the number of matches found but none of them appear in the clippings box...HELP!

    Hello
    Just a sample.
In my AW5 folder there is a subfolder entitled "Clippings".
One of the stored library file is entitled: Animals.
I put a COPY on the desktop and renamed it Animals5
Then, I moved the file in the AW6's Clippings folder.
    Then re-start AW6.
    Create a new doc.
    menu "File > Show Clippings"
I see a new locked TAB entitled "Animals5".
I may use the items embedded in this TAB but can't edit the TAB's content.
