AppleWorks 6.0 (OS 9) opened in Leopard 10.5.6

Possibly someone can explain this. I found an old WP file dating from 1992 (identified by MacLinkPlus as a MacWrite II doc) that was, in List View, under Kind, shown as AppleWorks 6.0 (OS 9). Double clicking the file caused an "Unexpected Error #-1700. After clicking OK, the Menu bar showed the active application was AppleWorks 6.0 (OS 9) and its About window showed only the lower text part (no graphic) stating it was AppleWorks 6.0 (c) 1991-2000 - different than the About box of AW 6.2.9 (says AppleWorks 6.2.9 (c) 1991-2003. 6.2.9 is still installed and can run under Rosetta emulation. The menu bar style and font was definitely OS X, not OS 9.
The application switcher (Cmd-Tab) icon is the older OS 9 icon style. I even opened AW 6.2.9 at the same time to compare the icons. I was able to open new WP and SS docs and save them when AW 6.2.9 wasn't running. AW tool bars didn't completely work, couldn't be moved (no drag bar on top) and appeared frozen. In the AW 6.2.9 app package (Ctrl click on the 6.2.9 app) I have AW 6.2.8 Classic - but nothing under Version says 6.0.
I'm puzzled how an application that needs Classic to run (OS 10.4 and below) can seemingly open in Leopard 10.5.6. I took a screen shot of the app running (with opened WP & SS) and used a camera to get a screen shot of the application icon as it appeared in App switcher. What am I missing here?
Thanks,
MartyP

Appleworks does not require Classic as long as it is version 6.2.9.
Chances are you upgraded your Appleworks 6 to 6.2.8 under Classic, and in doing so, added the necessary component for it to run as Appleworks 6.2.9 in Mac OS X.

  • IPhoto not open in Leopard

    Hi ALL,
Probable he wrong forum, but I have iPhoto 2 an is NOT opening in Leopard.
Is there a link where i Can download a iPhoto version that runs in Leopard?
Or can I extract it from a original install CD from a OSX version that I own. Like Jaguar - Panther - Tiger ??
Thanks for helping me out in this matter ...

You need at least iPhoto 4 or later to run iPhoto in 10.5.
The only way to upgrade from v2 is to purchase an iLife package.

  • Appleworks bounces but will not open

Please help! my appleworks applic. seems to have died! It's still there, but only 'bounces' as if opening and then nothing. I deleted the package and re-installed it with my friends, directly fire-wired from his laptop, but still it won't work. I have installed a Word package to use, but that just 'bounces' too. I have installed an iwork package (pages & keynote) which works ok but i can't use this for a lot of the things I need appleworks for nor can I open any of my appleworks docs which i need.
I have run checks on my hardware & software, but it says it's all fine.
I think the error occured after plugging in my supposedly mac-friendly walkman phone which crashed my ibook, when I had appleworks open. I have consulted a number of 'experts' but no one has any solutions.

  • Appleworks 6 app doesn't open

I have an ibook G4 and everything was fine until a couple days ago my appleworks 6 app wouldn't open so I downloaded apple works repair and fixed the docs that I had to use and it was okay. Today my appleworks 6 app won't open and the error message says it is "damaged or incomplete" and same with all of my works docs same error message comes up. the apple repair utlity doesn't work to fix any of the docs or the app itself. I put the apple disk 1 in and it does not have appleworks app on it to reinstall. What should I do

By "I tried that," I assume you mean that you reinstalled AppleWorks from the install disk.
After any install, there are some housekeeping tasks that should be done. For the System, you should Repair Permissions using the Disk Utility application found in Applications > Utilities.
For AppleWorks, you should delete the existing preference files, using Peggy's User Tips post AppleWorks has stopped working correctly as your guide.
A search of the AppleWorks forum shows this topic came up about a year ago. Although the original poster has not marked the question as "Answered," you may find additional useful information there.
In your initial post you said, "I downloaded apple works repair and fixed the docs that I had to use." I know of only one available download fitting that description—AppleWorks File Repair Utility—an application written to solve a specific issue:
This utility is designed to fix AppleWorks documents that have become damaged when the documents are saved from AppleWorks 6 running on a Mac OS X 10.2.x client to an AppleShare or compatible file server.
Unless you are saving the AppleWorks files directly to a separate computer which is acting as a file server, this utility should have no effect. Also the specific issue applies only to Macs running OS X 10.2.x (Jaguar).
Three other investigations that may provide useful information in tracking down the issue:
Can you launch AppleWorks by double clicking its icon at Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks 6?
Can AppleWorks be launched from a different User account? (If you have only a single user account on your machine, create a second one using Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts, then try to launch AppleWorks from that account.)
If AppleWorks can be launched by either of the methods above, can you then a) create a new document, b) add text to the new document, c) save and close the new document, d) open the new document using File > Open from within AppleWorks, e) open the new document by double-clicking it's icon?

  • When I click on any Appleworks document or try to open Appleworks, I get a dialog box saying :Appleworks Quit Unexpectedly" I have a current model iMac running OS  10.6.8. My Appleworks is version   6.2.9. Any suggestions?

When I try to open an Appleworks document or try to open Appleworks itself, I get a dialog box stating: "Appleworks 6 Quit Unexpectedly". I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and my OS is 10.6.8. Any suggestions?
    Many thanks

There was a security update through Software Update a couple of months ago for 10.6.8 that caused this kind of problem for PPC applications. Apple issued a revised update a couple of days later. So my first suggestion is to run Software Update to make sure you have the updated update. You can also manually download the updater at this link.
Whenever AppleWorks quits unexpectedly or you force quit it, there will be some corruption of its preferences.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • Can i still use my Appleworks drawing feature if I install Snow Leopard?

I work for a small business man and use my old Appleworks drawing program to make certificates and flyers for him because it is so easy to manipulate individual parts of the text and pictures.  I want to update my computer so it can communicate with my ipad, but am afraid I will loose the ability to use my files and program.  Can I still use my appleworks drawing program if I download Snow Leopard?

Your profile says you already have Snow Leopard (10.6.8).

    Ideas?

    Hi bunspod,
Have you cleared your Recent Items folder recently?
AppleWorks keeps an alias to every file you've ever saved, and never gets around to removing them as they become less recent. As the number of items increases, AW reaches a point where it slows dramatically, even to the point of failing to launch.
Quit AppleWorks (if it is running) and, in the Finder go to yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items. Open the folder and list the contents by Date Modified. Drag all but the most recent 10-20 to the Trash. (Trashing these aliases has no effect on the original files.)
There are a number of free solutions available on the 'net for the Recent items bug.
Yvan Koenig supplied a script in THIS POST to the User Tips Library. The script is included (in text) in the post. Note that this script deletes ALL items in the Recent Items folder, so may not be appropriate to your needs.
Dale Gillard did an extensive reworking of a script I produced many years ago. The result, Trash Recent Items, is available from his DMG software site.
Dale also produces an AppleWorks add on called Sidekick for AppleWorks 6. Recent Items maintenance is one of the free features available in Sidekick, a Shareware application that you can download and try before buying.
Jan Weijers's script, Keep 10, does what its name implies: keeps the 10 most recent items. The script is intended to be attached to the Recent Items folder, and continuously monitors the folder, removing older items and keeping only the most recent 10.

  • Appleworks Drawing files can be opened and used with Eazy Draw

I bought a new IMac with Snow Leopard last week and after a lot of frustration and talking to Apple Tech Support folks, determined that the several thousand Drawing files would never be able to be used on my new Mac. How could Apple leave me high and dry with no access to my files. Several pages back on this forum someone mentioned Eazy Draw and so I went to www.eazydraw.com and payed $20 for a 9 month trial. Within 2 minutes of downloading the trial version I was using it and opening the files. It works wonderful for opening the Drawing files and working with them. I assume it works equally as well with the other areas of Appleworks.

I assume it works equally as well with the other areas of Appleworks.
No: Draw only. Pages opens Word Processing, Numbers opens Spreadsheets, Keynote opens Presentations, but nothing will open Paint or Database documents.

  • I"stuff" won't open after leopard installation

A Tale of Taxes and Computers
My wife and I purchased our first computer in 1984. It was a Mac, no hard drive, just a floppy drive so we also got an extra external floppy drive. BIG TIME!
In 1991 we began using MacinTax (Turbo Tax) which saved much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth around the house.
We loved both so much that we have upgraded our Macs several times (we are now a three Mac family) and signed up for automatic renewal for Turbo Tax.
Which brings me to December of 2007.
I received my Turbo Tax in the mail and promptly popped it into my G5 to begin the taxes. Install, restart. But wait, the Turbo Tax icon just sits there and bounces, it won’t open! Reinstall, try again, same thing. I’ve never had this problem, what’s going on?
I eventually end up in Turbo Taxes’ FAQ forum to find out that my G5, running system 10.3, won’t open the program. I need system 10.4 or better. The only thing better is 10.5 and it’s just been released.
    What to do?
Well, I have a G5 running 10.3 (the computer I do our taxes on) and two laptops running 10.4. I may as well upgrade them all to 10.5 Leopard, I can get a family pack for only $199.00.
One week and $200.00 later, Leopard shows up at my door. Good, now maybe I can get back to doing the taxes!
Load, install, wait, blue screen, blue screen, more blue screen. Retry, reinstall, wait, blue screen, blue screen, still more blue screen. Call Tech support, how much Ram do I have? 256. That’s the problem, I need at least 512!
    What to do?
I need memory chips (plural), my wife’s laptop doesn’t have enough Ram either.
$130.00 and one week later, I’m ready to try again. Wait, the G5 won’t read the chip. Try a different slot, won’t read. Try a new slot, won’t read. What’s going on! I must admit, at this point I broke “The Man Law” and got the G5 manual out and read it.
“Memory chips must be installed in pairs”
    What to do?
Another $80.00 and another week later I got another chip for the G5!
Install both chips, install system 10.5, open TurboTax, IT WORKS!
But wait, with 10.5 Leopard there’s more!
Everything I had that operated in the Mac “Classic Environment” will no longer operate. It’s all gone! And while the third party software programs from 10.3 still work, the Apple programs do not! Does that make sense? I had recently started using iphoto, but it will not open anymore. Neither will any of the “i” applications in my G5. I guess now Apple expects me to spend another $80.00 for iLife 08 just so the applications that I already had will work with their new OS!
Congratulations Apple! You have made a giant leap to close the gap between Macs and PCs

A long saga with a moral: Look before you leap"
Everyone knows Leopard does not support Classic.
Everyone knows that many apps are not supported under Leopard.
I would never upgrade anything without first doing a complete investigation into the pros and cons.
    It's called due diligence.
Your rather strange comment to Mac about closing a gap goes unheard by Apple. This board is used by people who only are here to help others, and rants etc, rarely help anyone.
Your epic is unique in the annals of history in detail; but rather passe and blase in broader strokes.
I have had no such problems with Leopard on any of my three Macs and I do not expect I ever will. I pay attention to details and never move forward without knowing where I am going.
Since this board is for problem solving and you have not expressed a need for a solution to anything, I do not really understand the nature of your desultory philippic.

  • ITunes won't open in Leopard

The first time I loaded Leopard in my Powerbook G4, I did not do a clean install and iTunes wouldn't open. So I tried loading a new version of iTunes and it still wouldn't work. So then I tried a clean install and added back applications and content through Time Machine, but iTunes still wouldn't work. Have read a bunch of the different issues and the consistency seems to be: (1) Leopard install; (2) Itunes 7.5 install; (3) possible new Ipod issues (Classic, etc.)...I've experienced all of the issues: (1) spinning ball with opening Itunes; (2) Itunes either not recognizing Ipods (Classic and old) or not allowing any transfer because it's either not authorized or because it's so slow it stalls; (3) network drop offs; (4) Itunes going on permanent sleep...have tried to repair permissions, reinstall Itunes and have been "faithful" about all of the upgrades and still have problems...Read about Leopard not recognizing hubs so I've disconnected hubs and have gone straight into the USBs on the computer...still no fixes...the poor fix is a "Zune with a pc" which is the equivalent of losing the status as a "true believer"...won't go this route but hope the fix is in so when others question why I'm an Apple person with all of the bugginess, I can stay it was just "growing pains"....

  • Appleworks cwk files will not open in pages or numbers

I use AppleWorks 6.2.9.  Since my upgrade to 10.6.8 AppleWorks will not permit the settings in any document to be changed with first quitting AppleWorks, removing the plist, restarting AW, and opening the file a second time.  This is annoying.  So, I am looking into moving to Pages and Numbers for my AW word processing and spreadsheet documents.  Pages '09 trail was downloaded from the network and no document selected can be opened by either program.  I simply get a dialog stating "File could not be opened".
Nor will Pages or Numbers opened these files that were translated into a different format by MacLinkPlus.  Basically Pages and Numbers can not process and .cwk, .doc, or .xls file on my computer.
    I am looking for solutions.

I don't have any Appleworks files but Numbers & Pages users manuals say they will import Appleworks 6 files. I can't say why yours will not if they are Appleworks 6 documents.
I also don't have MacLinkPlus but it might be doing one of two things: saving in a pre-'97 format of Excel or saving with non-standard header information in the file that Numbers does not understand.
I'm not being of much help so far.  I've been looking all over and haven't found a solution for you. Sorry.

  • Document not opening in Leopard

Has anyone experienced problems with opening documents?
I have all the current updates installed and most of the time things work quite well in Leopard, but not as reliably as they did in Panther on my old Power Book G4. Sometimes documents will not open regardless of how many times you 'cntrl/click' or if you directly click the icon nothing happens when you click the folder or document you want.
I have found that the only way around the problem is to restart the computer and I'm getting sick of watching that spinning beach ball whilst waiting for something to happen.
What a shame; I switched to Mac six years ago and I was completely happy with 10.3.9, but my old Power Book suffered terminal mechanical damage. Now I have this Mac Book which I'm rapidly losing faith in.
Looks like it's back to Windows and from talking to other Leopard users, it would appear that I'm definitely not alone.

Cocktail and Leopard Cache cleaner (amongst others) are shareware apps that just do a little differently what Onyx does for free. So if you're happy with it there's no real need to buy something. I've never used Ice-Clean.
There are a number of utilities you can invest in out there, but I must recommend something that every Mac user should have in there arsenal. A decent Disk Utility. I use both Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro, and I run them as part of a regular maintenance routine, but especially before updating the OS. I have both because they each do slightly different things, but if I had to choose just one, it'd be DW.

I also keep a regularly updated bootable clone of my system on an external HD, and it's from there that I run these. They each come with a bootable DVD which takes a lot longer to startup from, so not only is it much quicker from an external HD, but should anything ever go amiss, I can simply clone back, and it gives me a complete backup of all my files too. With external HD's being relatively cheap these days - it just makes sense because you never know.

  • Appleworks 6 Docs won't open in Pages

We just got the new intel G5, and are wondering if we made a mistake, and should just get an old G5.
I burned a disc of my files from work- Appleworks word processing docs almost exclusively, and all recently converted to Appleworks 6- and they will not open in Pages.
We have Macs at work- all running OS 9.2- and I need to be able to use my files from work at home, or there is little point to having the computer. I'm sure I can import the actual text by using email and cut and paste, but that's a lot more work than I feel should be required.
If anyone could offer any help, it would be much appreciated. At this point, we're inclined to pack the darn thing back in its box and send it back.

If you go with the copy-over method, you need to copy the AppleWorks 6 folder that has been installed on another Mac.
Any version of AppleWorks released after the end of 2001 has an OS X installer, approximately version 6.2.2. Before then, it was an OS 8/9 installer, so it needs Classic, which Intel Macs can't do. For stability in OS X, you should use AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, Definitely not 6.2.7 - very, very, very buggy!
Yes, once you get AppleWorks 6 installed, your files should open. You might want to take a look at a user tip I wrote, AppleWorks 6 won't open my AW 5 files. Even though the title says AppleWorks 5, it applies to moving AppleWorks 6 files from one Mac to another.
