Appleworks 6.2.9 & Leopard

I've been running Appleworks 6.2.9 successfully on my Intel MacBook Pro running Leopard since October. Now it won't start up (quits unexpectedly). UGH!
I don't have access to disks from my classroom over the summer so I can't reinstall. Are there any other options?

Reinstalling isn't likely to solve the problem anyway. The most likely cause is corrupt preferences & is easily fixed by deleting the AppleWorks preferences.

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available from Apple - the new Pages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. (The older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.) Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents but I found it very unreliable with complex ones.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available from Apple. (Again, the older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.)
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote; again, the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available from Apple. (The older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.)
Nothing will open Database documents. You would need to export the data as ASCII and import it into another database program; you will lose your formatting and calculations will come over as the result, not the calculation.

  • Appleworks usage with Snow Leopard...

Appleworks worked ok for me with Leopard (via Rosetta apparently). However, I'm
now running Snow Leopard and although Appleworks will work, it is extremely slow
(crawls in fact) when I'm trying to select a font to use in word processing.
Any suggestions on how to speed up the selection scroll? Thanks-Joe Lanier

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
You have run into the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It's just a coincidence that it happened after you upgraded to Snow Leopard. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.
Also, whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • Curious appleworks font problem in leopard

After a lot of back and forth with Xerox software engineering, I've managed to get my ancient trusty Phaser 3400 up and running in leopard, with the single exception of appleworks. Printing is fine from all other programs, and in appleworks graphics and layout are fine, but all my fonts appear as a horribly jagged helvetica, as though the printer can find no fonts. Xerox was stumped by this and so am I.
Does anyone have any suggestions or has anyone run into this before? (I did an erase/install to leopard and copied over the appleworks app folder).
EDIT These same files print just fine from my Canon i9100, and equally badly from the phaser whether I use its ppd, the apple driver for the model that superseded it, or "generic post script printer."

    Hello Barbara
    Glad to read from you.
Have you re-installed the fonts which you used in AppleWorks which are not available in Leopard?
The set of fonts delivered with Leopard is different to the one delivered with Tiger.
We may think that some fonts are not correctly identified by the coelacanthus named AppleWorks.
Maybe AppleWorks wants that they are available in the User's account Font folder.
Try to duplicate fonts whose name resemble to your original ones from
    "Macintosh HD:Library:Fonts:"
    to
    "Macintosh HD:Users:<yourAccount>:Library:Fonts:"
Now, I will try to sleep.

  • Can't install Appleworks 6 on Intel/Leopard

I bought a new iMac last week after my Powerbook died. Today I installed the Leopard upgrade on it. Then I got out my Appleworks 6 CD to install it, but Leopard refuses, saying "because the Classic environment is no longer supported." This is an early version of Appleworks 6; it says it requires OS 8.1 or greater.

Obviously, you have an early AppleWorks 6 CD when the installer was only OS 8/9. It wasn't until sometime in 2001 when the AppleWorks installer also included an OS X version.
You have a couple of choices to get AppleWorks 6 installed on your new iMac. The easiest would be to buy a new package, but that may not be necessary. The best solution is to find someone with a Mac that has Classic or runs OS 8 or 9 & can burn a CD. Install AppleWorks 6 on the other Mac, update AppleWorks to at least version 6.2.4 & then burn the whole AppleWorks 6 folder to a CD. You can then copy the AppleWorks 6 folder to the Applications folder on your iMac. This CD will now be your backup should you ever need to reinstall AppleWorks again.
If you don't know someone else with a Mac you can use, a local Mac user group is a good place to start. You can search for one on Apple's Find a User Group page.
To keep within the Apple user license, you need to remove the copy from the Mac you used to install AppleWorks. If the someone already has AppleWorks installed, just burn their folder to the CD. You will remain within the license since you do have a license for AppleWorks for your Mac.

  • Upgrading Appleworks 5.0 for Leopard

    Hi,
I have an old B&W G-3 with System 9.2.2 and a lot of Appleworks 5.0 database files. I am buying a new Mac running Leopard, and I want to put my database files on the new Mac.
I know that some versions of Appleworks 6 will work on Leopard, but the Apple Store in my area told me that Apple is no longer supporting Appleworks. So I have two questions. If I buy Appleworks 6.0, will it install on Leopard so that I can upgrade it? And where can I go to download the upgrade if Apple is no longer supporting Appleworks?
    Multimacs

AppleWorks 6.2.4 and 6.2.9 will both work on Leopard.
6.2.7 will also work, but was probably the most bug-filled version of AW 6, and should be avoided.
AW 6.2.9 could still, at last report, be obtained from Apple by telephoning the (online) Apple Store and askiing for the legacy software list. Success may depend on the knowledge of individual who answers the phone. The telephone number is at the bottom of the Apple Store page.
AW 6.2.4 is available from Hardcore Mac.
The 6.2.9 updater is still available on THIS PAGE</a. Note that the updater must be matched with the language version of AW that you have installed. The US English version is the one identified only by file size (15.8 MB) in the box at the top right. The International English version is the one at the top of the main listy on the page. The updater works on any AppleWorks 6 version.
AppleWorks is also regularly available on eBay. Search separately for both "AppleWorks 6" and "Apple Works 6", as some sellers insert a space in the name. Note that earlier versions of the installer disk used an installer that ran in Mac OS 9. Although the version of AppleWorks on these disks willl either work on Leopard, or can be updated to work on Leopard, the installer is NOT suported by OS X (and Leopard does not support OS 9).

  • Appleworks from emac to  Leopard

I have an emac 10.3.9 which came with Appleworks 6.2.9. I want to mount Appleworks on my new machine Leopard 10.5.4. I am reluctant to just copy the folder across in case my version is corrupted. Can I get a clean copy from the install discs for the emac without re installing the emac 10.3.9? Is there any way to verify the Appleworks folder that is already on the emac? I am reluctant to reinstall.

1 - this would be legal if you wipe out AppleWorks from the eMac.
I am reluctant to just copy the folder across in case my version is corrupted. Can I get a clean copy from the install discs for the emac without re installing the emac 10.3.9?
2 - The installer delivered with the emac is dedicated to this kind of machine.
The only soluce would be to use Pacifist to extract the AppleWorks installer from the available packages.
Is there any way to verify the Appleworks folder that is already on the emac? I am reluctant to reinstall.
3 - I am not aware of such a tool.
The easier soluce would be to start the emac, insert the install CD
search the package which install AppleWorks (and other items)
    run it,
instruct it to install only AppleWorks 6 (select an alternate location)
So you will have a clean (but ancient) folder.
Transfer it on the new machine
Apply the updater to 624 if you have keep it somewhere.
Save the AppleWorks 624 folder on a CD so it would be ready if something requires a new install one day.
Apply the updater to AppleWorks 629 (keep the updater so it will be available if for this or that reason Apple remove it from the downloadable items.
And, I repeat, wipe out AppleWorks 6 from the emac.
    It's the rule:
one copy = one machine !

  • Appleworks not opening in Leopard

Actually, it opens and immediately closes. EVerything transferred fine from my G4 iBook to my new macBook, but this is one glitch I don't need!!
    Ideas?

    Hi bunspod,
Have you cleared your Recent Items folder recently?
AppleWorks keeps an alias to every file you've ever saved, and never gets around to removing them as they become less recent. As the number of items increases, AW reaches a point where it slows dramatically, even to the point of failing to launch.
Quit AppleWorks (if it is running) and, in the Finder go to yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items. Open the folder and list the contents by Date Modified. Drag all but the most recent 10-20 to the Trash. (Trashing these aliases has no effect on the original files.)
There are a number of free solutions available on the 'net for the Recent items bug.
Yvan Koenig supplied a script in THIS POST to the User Tips Library. The script is included (in text) in the post. Note that this script deletes ALL items in the Recent Items folder, so may not be appropriate to your needs.
Dale Gillard did an extensive reworking of a script I produced many years ago. The result, Trash Recent Items, is available from his DMG software site.
Dale also produces an AppleWorks add on called Sidekick for AppleWorks 6. Recent Items maintenance is one of the free features available in Sidekick, a Shareware application that you can download and try before buying.
Jan Weijers's script, Keep 10, does what its name implies: keeps the 10 most recent items. The script is intended to be attached to the Recent Items folder, and continuously monitors the folder, removing older items and keeping only the most recent 10.

  • Using Appleworks or Word, in Leopard .. screens move, when pulldown menu..

When working on a document, and I highlight a sentence & pull down the font screen to change the font (several documents open) my document dulls, and moves. If I pull the menu down, and move to highlight new font very slowly, it might change it without the document moving, but it may do the dulling & moving bit repeatedly. Very frustrating! Do I need to change a preference..where? Anyone else with this problem?

If you are using an Apple Mighty mouse, if you open up your documents, and you press those side buttons on the mouse, does this cause your issue to occur?
It could be a feature called "expose"
If you go to system preferences > expose & spaces and you can change settings for it. You can also go to system prefrences > keyboard and mouse, and go to mouse, and change the button that says expose to something else or " - "
This will probably stop this from happening in the future.
If you notice it happening when you place the mouse in the corners of the screen, this could be related to "hot corners" which are also located in the expose system preference aswell.

  • What is the difference between OSX 10.6 and 10.6 server? I need to install Snow Leopard in a Parallels VM and it only allows 10.6 server. Will Rosetta work if I use the server edition?

I MUST use an app that was discontinued which requires Rosetta, yet I also want to upgrade to Mavericks. I was told that Parallels and VMWare Fusion both support running Snow Leopard SERVER, but not Snow Leopard. Two questions: Will Rosetta run on Snow Leopard Server when it is running inside the Parallels/Fusion/whatever virtual machine which is running under Mavericks? The second question is: Is there any problem with running any specific software in Snow Leopard Server when it is set up this way?

    Richard Cartledge wrote:
The problem with client as virtualised OS is the Apple EULA, not a technical one.
I don't know if it works, or you're just not meant to do it.
PS. If you download or have Snow Leopard DVD, you can install Rosetta in later OSs, certainly Lion and Mountain Lion and Mavericks.
insert your Snow Leopard disc, open the Optional Installs folder on that disc, and double-click the Optional Installs.mpkg package. The Installer will open and you’ll be prompted to click Continue a couple of times and then choose a destination for the installation. Choose your startup volume and click Continue yet again.
In the Custom Install on “nameofvolume” window that appears, enable the Rosetta option and click Continue. In the next window click Install to do just that.
NB/ I don't have any old software to test to see if it actually makes it work!
    WRONG TWICE!
Bad idea to attempt to install Rosetta into Lion, Mt. Lion or Mavericks and good luck trying to remove it after that attempt.  Result: NO powerpc app will run after that installation and you will have to complete a wipe of your hard drive and a complete pre-Rosetta install to get rid of Rosetta!
It was a common Urban Myth that the Snow Leopard EULA prohibited its virtualization in Lion or Mt. Lion on a Mac.  That myth has been largely debunked over the last two years.
In addition, Apple's release of Snow Leopard Server at a 95% discount ($20) has rendered the issue largely moot!
OP: what application are we talking about here?
For example here is the long beloved powerpc application Appleworks running in Snow Leopard Server installed in Parallels for use in a post Lion world:

  • Have MobileMe account, have 2008 iMac, have rosetta apps, have snow leopard, don't want Lion, have to have iCloud after June?

    Hello All,
I have a MBP running Lion and its fine. I have an iPhone 4, iPad, and a family pack MobileMe account. I have a 2008 iMac that has Final Cut Pro and several other rosetta apps. The iMac is running snow leopard and I don't have any issues to complain about. Since I will be forced to move to iCloud in June if I choose to keep my account I am trying to figure out how to procede with my iMac. I find it annoying that Apple is in a sense forcing MobileMe subscribers to purchase an OS update (Lion $69.00) or at worst a newer computer (Lion will not run on pre-core 2 duo) if we want to "sync" our devices and continue to pay for mobileme services. On top of that, by forcing people to update to Lion to get iCloud, they are forcing people to lose support for any rosetta applications that they have an investment in.
I know about the rosetta install on Lion trick - (installing rosetta on a Lion machine from a snow leopard disc). I was lucky to have a snow leopard disc, so I could install rosetta on my MBP to have support for Final Cut Pro 6.
So, is there any hope of sync services with snow leopard on my iMac while moving my family MobileMe account to iCloud? So far, there seems to be alot of problems with iCloud syncing from what I have read. So in order to keep everything in sync (contacts, iCal, mail, etc.) with iCloud on all my devices (iPhone, MBP, iMac) I will have to buy a Lion install drive for the iMac and re-install rosetta and re-install all those applications as well....
    Any thoughts ?

  • Running AppleWorks on new Mac Mini

Hi. I recently bought a new Mac Mini, only to learn that AppleWorks didn't ship with it because it has been discontinued. So, I was wondering if there's any way to get AppleWorks to run on Leopard. If there is, how would I go about obtaining a copy of AppleWorks that would work on it?
One more question. I used to use ClarisWorks and liked it a lot. I realize this may be a shot in the dark, but is there any way to find copies of ClarisWorks that would run on the latest operating system (on a Mac Mini) as well? Thanks for any info.
ETA: I do have an older Mac Mini as well from 2005. Would AppleWorks be installable from any of those older disks?
    Message was edited by: mitrailleuse

You won't be able to run any version of ClarisWorks or AppleWorks 5 on an Intel Mac or any Mac running Leopard because you would need Classic & neither Intel Macs or Leopard support Classic.
The AppleWorks included with the G4 Mac mini would be AppleWorks 6.2.9. That could be a problem if you have any ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files you want to open. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 can open these files but 6.2.9 will give an I/O error when you try to open about half of them. The rest will open without problems. There is no predicting which will open & which won't. If you run into this problem, you might consider getting a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.4 which will run very well on your new Mac mini & won't have problems with those files.

  • Upgrading From Leopard (OS 10.5) to Snow Leopard (OS 10.6)

It appears Leopard (OS 10.5) doesn't support the latest Flash players so a lot of content results in error messages asking me to upgrade, but the upgrades don't work with Leopard. So I'm guessing I must bite the bullet and transition to Snow Leopard as a minimum.
If I do, will the OS upgrade wipe out my Appleworks programs? I'm afraid of losing the ability to access all my current documents. Will all my other programs be left intact? Could I reload the Appleworks suite from the Leopard discs after the upgrade?
    Any suggestions or solutions?

    1. It won't be deleted unless a problem occurs. Back up everything first.
    2. See #1.
    3. You'll need to reinstall it from the disk originally used to install AppleWorks; it isn't an OS component. If AppleWorks came bundled with the computer, it's a PowerPC Mac and incapable of running 10.6; therefore, no Mac OS X 10.5 DVD will include it.
