Appleworks 6.2.9 Updater

Updater will not open because "The default location required for this install could not be found. The install will be cancelled." The updater is in the same Applications folder as Appleworks 6. Both are standard English versions. Running Disk Utility doesn't correct the problem. Any ideas?

Welcome to Apple Discussions
The error message means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reasons are:
1. The language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. The most reliable link is at this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
2. The application has been moved. The folder containing AppleWorks 6 must be named AppleWorks 6 AND be in the first level of the Applications folder. The second part of my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, explains more.

  • AppleWorks 6.2.9 updater freezes at "gathering information"

I'm using AW 6.2.4 Japanese and tried to update to 2.9 international English. Everything goes well until "gathering information." I tried the 2.9 Japanese version and it did the same. Am wondering what I did wrong....

First of all, you can't update one language version of AppleWorks to another language version. The updaters are language specific. You must use the Japanese updater to update your Japanese version.
Apparent stalling at "gathering information" is usually due to having external drives or your iDisk mounted. Even though the updater may find an installed copy of AppleWorks on the start up drive, it checks every mounted drive "just in case" there is another copy. Unmount any other drives & try again.

  • Appleworks 6.2.9 updater not responding

I am running Appleworks 6.2.4 and just downloaded the 6.2.9 updater. I was able to unstuff the file and double-clicked on the updater application. It opens and then I get a little window that says "gathering information", but it never progresses beyond that. I have forced quit and tried again, but to no avail. (Note: the first time I opened the updater application, I was greeted with the software agreement window, which I accepted. That window no longer appears when I've tried to re-run the updater.)
    Thanks.

Even if AppleWorks finds a copy of AppleWorks to update on your startup drive, the updater looks at all connected drives to make sure there aren't any other copies of AppleWorks that need updating. So, the simple solution is to make sure all drives, including your iDisk, are unmounted before running the updater.

  • AppleWorks 6.2.9 Updater not running because of default?

I have version 5.0.4 of AppleWorks, so I decided to update it with the 6.2.9 Updater. Whenever I run the program, a window pops up saying "The default location for this install could not be found. This install was canceled." How do I change the default?

    Hello
There is NO updater available allowing you to update from AW 5.0.4 to AW 6.x.
This kind of upgrade is a MAJOR one. You must buy the product in the version 6.
At this time the current version is AW 6.2.9 and it seems that is is the ultimate one.
You may find AW 6.x versions at low cost on ebay or thru some other vendors.

  • Updated Appleworks will not open/ updated documents won't open

Am so frustrated! Knew my G4 was almost out of memory. Was at the Apple Store today and bought a LaCie 500GB hard drive AND a new MacBook Pro notebook. Before transferring files to the new computer, Apple told me to "save" my desktop documents on the new hard drive. Worked OK until I got to Appleworks and all my cwk files. The Appleworks icon now shows a blue label under it (huh?) and a small arrow and will not open. Hundreds of documents done on the Appleworks updated (6.2) software I can't open or transfer. Only thing that I am able to open are old documents from my original Appleworks.
Is there any way to get the Appleworks 6.2 open? and moved to the new hard drive? I'm an artist working from home... need these documents! Do I have to schlep the old computer, the new computer and the new hard drive back to the Apple store tomorrow? Help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Lani,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
I don't know what the blue label under the AppleWorks icon means. Is this the Application icon or the icon for an AppleWorks document? The small arrow, if it is curved and located at the lower left corner of the icon, means the icon is an alias to the file.
If your AppleWorks application is indeed version 6.2, you'll need to update further. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest recommended version for current Mac OS X systems (Tiger & Leopard), and the newest (and also recommended) version is 6.2.9.
The following actions should help in solving your problem.
    1. Locate the AppleWorks 6 application package. It should be at Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks. Click on it once to select it, then press command-I to Get Info. In the Get Info window, check the Version number. If it is anything other than 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, download and apply the 6.2.9 update. (See the Caution below.) If the AppleWorks 6 folder (containing the application) is not in the Applications folder, move it to that folder. If the Appleworks application package is not in the AppleWorks 6 folder, move it to that folder.
    2. After any software installation it is necessary to do a system maintenance task—Repair Permissions. Use Spotlight to locate Disk Utility and double click the file to launch the application. In Disk Utility, click First Aid, Select your hard drive, then click Repair Permissions.
    3. Whenever Appleworks is misbehaving an early troubleshooting action is to delete AW's preferences files. This is especially true if you have moved AppleWorks from one machine to another. Look in Home (yourname) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks. Delete both prefs files and both cache files found in this folder.
    4. Click on one of the AppleWorks file icons with the arrow and blue label, then press command-I. In the Get Info window, check if this icon is a file (document) or an alias. If it is a document, you should be able to open it. Check that the Open with section of the Get Info window names AppleWorks 6 as the application to open the file. If not, use the pull down menu in this section to select AppleWorks 6, then click the Change all button to apply this instruction to all .cwk files. If the icon is an alias, you will need to redo the transfer of files from the G4 to the MBP, making sure that what you are transferring are actual files, not aliases.
Still not solved? Re post with more detail on what you do to open the files, and what response you get from the MBP.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Where is the default location for the AppleWorks updater 6.2.9?

§When I try to install the 6.2.9 updater I get the message 'The default location could not be located'

An error message when running the updater is usually due to the wrong updater for your installed version of AppleWorks or not already having AppleWorks 6 installed. If you don't already have AppleWorks 6, you'll have to buy it.
If you live in the US or Canada, click one of the two "Download" buttons on the AppleWorks 6.2.9 updater page. If you live anywhere else in the English-speaking world (UK, Australia, etc.), pick International English. In either case, if one doesn't work, download & install the other.

  • 10.4.11 and Appleworks 6.2.9 and some mystery updates

My software update wants to download and install 10.4.11, but I want to make sure my Appleworks 6.2.9 will still work before I install the update because I have no desire want so ever to move to iWorks etc. which are just far inferior to Appleworks for my uses.
So can I use 10.4.11 without losing Appleworks or not?
Will the updates below help? What are they for anyway, and why can't i find that info before I download them?

The AppleWorks 6.2.9 Update will do absolutely nothing on your already installed AppleWorks 6.2.9.
Its task is to update old AppleWorks 6 versions (6.0 thru 6.2.8).

  • AppleWorks Updater?

Greetings! I have just installed from CD AppleWorks 6.2.9 which went great. I downloaded the update from Apple.com and when I attempt to install the update, I get an error message (thought that kinda thing was Windows only???): The error indicates that the Updater can't find AppleWorks 6 program to update in the Macintosh HD disk. Why not? Hello. I see it there. I have used AppleWorks and it works fine residing right there in the Macintosh HD Applications folder. I know it's there so what's up with the Updater? Any ideas, help or comments?? Thanks & God Bless!

The message is rather vague. It means it can't find a version of AppleWorks 6 for that updater to update. The usual reason is, as mentioned, the language of the updater doesn't match the language of the application. AppleWorks comes in 15 different versions/languages.
But, I think the reason you got the message is that you already have AppleWorks 6.2.9. There is nothing newer. Again, the updater can't find anything to update.

  • Appleworks update 6.2.9 will not install

    Hi,
The message reads "The updater was unable to find an installation of the US AppleWorks 6 program to update in the specified Update Location. Please select a different Update Location that contains an installation of the US AppleWorks 6 or install AppleWorks 6 from your orig." I've had the program installed since I've had the computer. Once I click OK it goes back to the Updater window but doesn't give me any option to choose anywhere to save it. It just gives a folder icon that says next it "Items will be updated in the folder "AppleWorks 6" on the disk "Mac HD."
The only options I get are Update or Quit. Also, it never gets to a window that has a program icon that I can drag into the Applications folder. Any ideas. The program has been working fine except for random crashes upon launching. Thus why I'm updating.
    Thanks, Cozy

Since AppleWorks was designated "end-of-life" it is difficult to find the updaters (especially the US/North American) on Apple's site. Here at the links I have for the 6.2.9 updater. The first has a link to the North American updater in the upper right & links to other languages further down.

  • Snow Leopard and Appleworks

I have several scrips I use that access Appleworks. Since installing Snow Leopard, Apple Script crashes when I try to run any of them. When I first opened AppleWorks after the OS update, it told me I had to install "Rosetta," which I did and AW now opens, but AS still crashes when I try to run any of the AW scripts.
Are there any suggestions out there? I have a copy of Numbers 09, which will I'm sure will work, and I have expected that someday I would be forced to switch over from AW. But, I would rather not have to do it just now as I have charts on AW and I have not been able to use Numbers to make anything close to them.

Ooops! I posted too soon. After my prior post, I tried to load the AW script again and it continued to cause Script Editor to crash. But, several of the other scripts that also used AW not only loaded into AS, but ran not only normally, but much faster. I finally determined that it was only the one script that crashed AS. I pulled a copy of that same script from my last backup and it loaded and ran fine. So, as of this moment, I am a happy camper and everything runs under Snow Leopard, AND, it runs noticeably faster. One particular script runs at least ten time faster, which is amazing.

  • AppleWorks versus MicroSoft 2008 for Mac

    Hi ALL,
How is it possible to open AppleWorks files with MicroSoft 2008 for Mac ??
Maybe it is possible to open these files with Excel.
I have a lot of older files I need to open in any application now I running Tiger.
I need these files again, ones these files was a part of a project that is activating in praxis now.
Any help to gave me a good hind or advice ??
    Dimaxum

AppleWorks is available on the CDs which where delivered with you three old machines.
The best source would be the one delivered with the G4 machine.
Insert the CD in the CD tray of the G4 machine, open its icon.
I assumes that you will see a folder entitled "bundled applications"
    Double click it
respond to the asked questions and navigate to a folder containing AppleWorks installer.
Run it to install a clean AppleWorks on the machine.
Copy this folder on a CD for future use (copy also the set of fonts installed with AppleWorks).
Copy the complete AppleWorks folder on the new machine in the folder entitled "Applications"
Copy the fonts in the folder entitled "Library:Fonts"
I assumes that it will be AppleWorks in a version numbered between 2 and 2.4
Using Disk Utility, create a disk image whose size is 150 Mbytes
Name it AppleWorks 62old then copy the entire contents of the folder AppleWorks 6"
After that, update the installed AppleWorks in version 6.2.9 from
    "http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleworks629formac.html"
If you are using the continental US version download from the button entitled 15.8MB at right top.
For other versions use the updaters described in plain English.
The old version in the disk image may be useful if you have some old files which AW 6.29 refuse to open. It's a bug which doesn't strike older versions.
There are other kind of install disks.
On some, there is a "standard" folder named "AppleWorks 6"
On other there is a hidden folder entitled "Image" but as you have the machine you will be able to install the program from the installer itself. I don't remember if there is an installer dedicated to bundled programs but I'm sure that with a bit of patience you will find it.
    Good luck.
Don't forget the contents of the license:
one program = one machine. So, if you grab AppleWorks from the G4, you must remove it from this machine.

  • AppleWorks 6.2.9

AppleWorks crashes since I updated to 10.4.4 When I start typing it shuts down

Thanks Neil ... I came here looking for an answer to
    the same question.
That means I'll have to go back and forth in the
sytem prefs to use unicode in other apps ... hmmm.
No it doesn't. Mac OS X programs automatically use Unicode as it's built into the operating system.
The setting Niel referred to is the US Extended keyboard input type. This setting changes how you use your keyboard. That is, rather than using only the keys available on your keyboard, I understand the setting gives you access to the other 16,000 characters that make a Unicode font. Most people don't want access to these characters (eg non-English alphabets, etc). You can use the Character Palette to access these other 16,000 characters if you only occasionally need them.

  • AppleWorks 6.2.9 - Layout problem

    Hi!
The DB document was created in Claris Works years ago.
Now I have a problem to resize layout canvas. *http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07373/629.png*
Im trying to resize as shown in Help. There is no double arrow at the end of boundarys. I remember there was a box Body wich can be moved, but is missed. Tryed with Click -Cntr, Opt, Cmnd keys, etc., but nothing.
The layout cant be resized in Apple Works 6.2.9, but in Claris Works 5 too.
But in Browse mode I can see all canvas/page. *http://xs219.xs.to/xs219/07373/639.png*
    Need to add more fields.
Any help will be very, very appreciate! Thanks!

That is odd, especially since it also doesn't work in ClarisWorks/AppleWorks 5.
If you're running ClarisWorks 5 in Classic or any version of OS 9, there are some display anomalies that the AppleWorks 5.0.4 update fixed. However, if you truly are running ClarisWorks 5, it has to be version 5.0.2 or earlier. It takes both the AppleWorks 5.0.3 & 5.0.4 updates to get to 5.0.4.
As for the problems in AppleWorks 6 in OS X, it might be some corruption in the database itself. Databases are much more prone to corruption than other AppleWorks file types. Some easy troubleshooting might help.
Are you having a problem with any other database or with AppleWorks 6 in general? Deleting the AppleWorks preferences can help general AppleWorks 6 problems.
I'm guessing you saved the database as an AppleWorks 5 file from within AppleWorks 6 & then opened in AppleWorks 5. Did you ever try opening that file again in AppleWorks 6 without having opened it in AppleWorks 5? This can sometimes strip some minor corruption.
Do you have an older backup of this database when it did work? If so, make a copy of it & then use it to build a current database. You can delete all of the records in the copy & drag the icon of the problem DB onto the open window of the copy. Or you can just copy new records not in the old DB from the new one & paste them into the copy.

  • Appleworks 6.0.4 Problem

We have an iMac (Powermac 2.2). Installed OSX 10.2 approx 5 weeks ago with multiple CD's. Problem with Appleworks 6.0.4. APW works fine in Classic 9.2. Can create & save/modify/spell check documents. Macpaint ok. But, cannot transfer documents & macpaint items or attach to emails in OSX?
I copied APW 6.0.4 to OSX Dock. Can create new documents but no spell check? Macpaint will not work. Documents saved in OSX are showing up in an "Auto Save" folder in Classic 9.2. Cannot re open files. Message box- "This file was not closed properly, and a newer version is available. Open the newer version?" About a dozen document files saved in APW6 OSX now have the big "A" on them & will not open. Message box says "deleted" or "can't find volume". Help! What are we doing wrong?

Mac savvy friend came over today. I had downloaded Appleworks 6.2.9 Updater. Followed notes "Important Information About the AppleWorks 6.2.9 Updater". Ran install. Checked Classic 9.2.- APW 6.0.4 now upgraded to 6.2.8. Checked OS10.4.4.- APW 6.0.4 now upgraded to 6.2.9. MacPaint program now ok!
Followed Forum Tip Notes " Appleworks 6: Main Spell Dictionary Not Installed- Error Message". Located Dictionary, chose etc. Spell Check & Dictionary now work in both Classic & OS10.4.4.!
Checked " ALL File Types" and found all missing files except for 7 which had migrated to Auto Save Folder in Classic & been deleted.

  • Appleworks for macbook pro 10.8.6

how can I find apple works for my mac book pro to download.  osx 10.6.8  then I can use 6.2  appleworks to upgrade.  Currently I have no appleworks on my computer.

No version of Appleworks can run under OS 10.7 or higher. The last OS that still supported AppleWorks was 10.6.8, and it used software emulation to run pre-Intel apps like Appleworks.
LibreOffice is a modern productivity suite that duplicates most of the functions of Appleworks and is free. You cannot say the same for iWork, the current product that Apple placed in AppleWorks' old slot. iWork has word processing (Pages) ; Spreadsheets (Numbers) and presentation (KeyNote). LibreOffice has those plus Draw and database functions.
Best of all, LibreOffice is open-source and I believe it opens AppleWorks files. You can find information here:
    http://www.libreoffice.org/discover/libreoffice/
EDIT: Sorry, you typed "10.8.6" for an OS in the title and I failed to noticed you said 10.6.8 in other places. So you can run AW6 on that computer if you can find it. I still think your best action is to use LibreOffice that still runs under 10.6.8. Otherwise, you wil be looking to buy used software like this on Amazon:
