AppleWorks 6 will not open in OS 10.4.8

I just installed AW 6.2.9 under OS 10.4.8. I have a dual CPU PPC G5. It installed without a problem but when I went to open it I got the message "AW^ not supported on this system"! The literature that came with the CD/DVD stated AW 6 is supported under OS 10.4.8.
What is the problem?

baltwo,
Thanks for your help. I searched for all Appleworks files . and found a large amount that went back to 2001 (including those for OS 9!)! So, I just deleted all those and then uninstalled any new AW 6 files. I followed this with a reinstall and sure enough AW opened! I am sure it got confused and tried to open an OS 9 version and I now do not have Classic in my system.

  • Updated Appleworks will not open/ updated documents won't open

Am so frustrated! Knew my G4 was almost out of memory. Was at the Apple Store today and bought a LaCie 500GB hard drive AND a new MacBook Pro notebook. Before transferring files to the new computer, Apple told me to "save" my desktop documents on the new hard drive. Worked OK until I got to Appleworks and all my cwk files. The Appleworks icon now shows a blue label under it (huh?) and a small arrow and will not open. Hundreds of documents done on the Appleworks updated (6.2) software I can't open or transfer. Only thing that I am able to open are old documents from my original Appleworks.
Is there any way to get the Appleworks 6.2 open? and moved to the new hard drive? I'm an artist working from home... need these documents! Do I have to schlep the old computer, the new computer and the new hard drive back to the Apple store tomorrow? Help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Lani,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
I don't know what the blue label under the AppleWorks icon means. Is this the Application icon or the icon for an AppleWorks document? The small arrow, if it is curved and located at the lower left corner of the icon, means the icon is an alias to the file.
If your AppleWorks application is indeed version 6.2, you'll need to update further. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest recommended version for current Mac OS X systems (Tiger & Leopard), and the newest (and also recommended) version is 6.2.9.
The following actions should help in solving your problem.
    1. Locate the AppleWorks 6 application package. It should be at Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks. Click on it once to select it, then press command-I to Get Info. In the Get Info window, check the Version number. If it is anything other than 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, download and apply the 6.2.9 update. (See the Caution below.) If the AppleWorks 6 folder (containing the application) is not in the Applications folder, move it to that folder. If the Appleworks application package is not in the AppleWorks 6 folder, move it to that folder.
    2. After any software installation it is necessary to do a system maintenance task—Repair Permissions. Use Spotlight to locate Disk Utility and double click the file to launch the application. In Disk Utility, click First Aid, Select your hard drive, then click Repair Permissions.
    3. Whenever Appleworks is misbehaving an early troubleshooting action is to delete AW's preferences files. This is especially true if you have moved AppleWorks from one machine to another. Look in Home (yourname) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks. Delete both prefs files and both cache files found in this folder.
    4. Click on one of the AppleWorks file icons with the arrow and blue label, then press command-I. In the Get Info window, check if this icon is a file (document) or an alias. If it is a document, you should be able to open it. Check that the Open with section of the Get Info window names AppleWorks 6 as the application to open the file. If not, use the pull down menu in this section to select AppleWorks 6, then click the Change all button to apply this instruction to all .cwk files. If the icon is an alias, you will need to redo the transfer of files from the G4 to the MBP, making sure that what you are transferring are actual files, not aliases.
Still not solved? Re post with more detail on what you do to open the files, and what response you get from the MBP.

  • Applework will not open, printer error

When I try to open Appleworks, I get the following error. "AppleWorks could not be launched because of a shared library error "<Appleworks><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_PrintCores>"" This error just happened without making any adjustments to the computer. Prior to this error, the application (Safari, Appleworks, etc.) would unexpectedly quit when you tried to print. That problem also remains. I have an EPSON CX4200 that I bought with the computer.
    Any suggestions would be great.

    2. Trash the AppleWorks folder in your Home -> Library -> Preferences folder along with the com.apple.plist file. (Don't trash the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bar.)
I suspect you have reached the system's preferences folder rather than your own. OS X maintains a set of preferences for its own use, and a set for each User account.
In the Finder (and with AppleWorks NOT running), open a new finder window (command-N), then:
•Click the Home icon with your name beside it.
•Click the Library folder in the list that apears in the next column.
•Click the Preferences folder that appears in the next column.
•Drag the AppleWorks folder in the next column to the Trash.*
•Drag the com,apple.appleworks.plist file in this column to the Trash
*See note above regarding Button Bar preferences.
    3. Use the first aid utility to repair permissions on your hard drive (it's recommended that you run this more than once.
The 'first aid utility' is called Disk Utility. You'll find it in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, but it's probably easier to click the blue Spotlight icon at the right end of the menu bar, then type in "disk utility" (without the quotes). Double click the icon (it will show as the Top Hit) to run the utility, then click the First Aid button in the window that opens, then Repair Permission in the next window. As noted in the User Tips post, it's recommended that Repair Permissions be run more than once (until it reports that Permissions are OK or that no permissions were repaired).

  • Appleworks will not open on download

Having downloaded the OS X version onto my new IMAC, I get the following
"default location required for this install could not be found.
    This install will be cancelled.
Now when I downloaded this from the Apple web site, it all seemed to be fairly automated. I was never asked where I wanted it installed to. I assume that it will just sit on my desk top. It opens, I get the Read Me but the application wont install.
A little weird. Just switched after 10 years on PC..........
    Any ideas out there??
    Thanks

AppleWorks (the application) is not available as a download.
It used to be bundled with various Apple computers, but that ceased with the new Intel-based models.
AppleWorks is still available as a separate purchase from various stores including the Apple Stores.
From your letter, it looks like you downloaded an updater for AppleWorks, thinking that it was the actual application. The updater looked for the original application, couldn't find it, and therefore gave you the message about not being able to find the location.
If you do have a copy of AppleWorks, it should be in your Applications folder.

  • Appleworks bounces once, but will not open

PLEASE HELP ME! my appleworks will NOT open and i honestly have no idea how to fix it! whether i click on appleworks in the dock or from recent items, it just bounces once and then does not do anything. help would be greatly, grealty appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
My first step would be to go to the Finder.
Open a new Finder window, click on the Home icon with your user name under it, then Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting points > Recent Items.
Select and all or most of the items in this folder and drag them to the Trash.
Close the Finder window and try launching AppleWorks.
Should that step not solve the problem, try Michael's suggestions.

  • Appleworks cwk files will not open in pages or numbers

I use AppleWorks 6.2.9.  Since my upgrade to 10.6.8 AppleWorks will not permit the settings in any document to be changed with first quitting AppleWorks, removing the plist, restarting AW, and opening the file a second time.  This is annoying.  So, I am looking into moving to Pages and Numbers for my AW word processing and spreadsheet documents.  Pages '09 trail was downloaded from the network and no document selected can be opened by either program.  I simply get a dialog stating "File could not be opened".
Nor will Pages or Numbers opened these files that were translated into a different format by MacLinkPlus.  Basically Pages and Numbers can not process and .cwk, .doc, or .xls file on my computer.
    I am looking for solutions.

I don't have any Appleworks files but Numbers & Pages users manuals say they will import Appleworks 6 files. I can't say why yours will not if they are Appleworks 6 documents.
I also don't have MacLinkPlus but it might be doing one of two things: saving in a pre-'97 format of Excel or saving with non-standard header information in the file that Numbers does not understand.
I'm not being of much help so far.  I've been looking all over and haven't found a solution for you. Sorry.

  • Appleworks 6.2.7 will not open and can't boot from Systemworks CD

Received message "need to restart your computer". Now Appleworks 6.2.7 will not open and I can't boot using SystemWorks CD -- keep getting the above "need to restart your computer" message when trying to start with SW CD. I've gone through the troubleshooting steps i.e. safe boot, throw away the prefs file, and have just reinstalled Appleworks from my software restore CD. When I try to open AW I now get message "Appleworks has unexpectedly quit". What do I do now? Suggestions and advice would be appreciated.
    Lorne

Unless you absolutely have to open files created in ClarisWorks 4 or earlier or drag & drop in tables, I recommend the first thing you do is update to AppleWorks 6.2.9. AppleWorks 6.2.7 update came out around January 2003 & was the worst update ever. Fortunately, the 6.2.9 updater came out in January 2004 & fixed the issues 6.2.7 was supposed to fix and the ones it caused. You can find the links to the updater on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
Then after updating, delete the AppleWorks preferences as in my user tip Barbara gave the link to.

  • Appleworks .cwk files will not open....

I have several .cwk files (created in Appleworks 6.x) that for some reason will not open in Pages anymore. They worked fine a few weeks ago. I get the following message:
    IMPORT ERROR
Appleworks document "my file" is not a word processing document.
Anybody have this problem before? I haven't changed any of these files. Whenever I use them I always say "Don't Save" when I close them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Dick

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Dick
Are you sure they are AppleWorks 6 word processing documents? Those are the only type Pages can open. Are you sure you opened these specific files in Pages before? I'd be happy to take a look at a couple & see if there is anything unusual about them that is keeping them from opening. Click my name in blue next to this post. My public e-mail address is in the biography section. Just replace (AT) with @. As I do have a regular job, it might be a day or two before I could get back to you, but I'll try to be quick.

  • Recovered 1994 appleworks files; pages will not open them

I had a few discs of old files I need to access from 1994; data recovery got them onto a CD for me.  I purchased Pages (iWork) thinking it would open them, but it comes up with "created by an unsupported version of appleworks."
Does anyone know how I can open these?  Many thanks.

The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files. 1994 files are likely ClarisWorks 4 as ClarisWorks 5 came out in 1995.
Your best option would be to get a copy of AppleWorks 6. AppleWorks 6.2.9 (the current version) can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6, so a good choice would be AppleWorks 6.2.4. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest version stable in OS X. Avoid 6.2.7 - very, very, very buggy! The last time I looked, Hardcore Mac was selling AppleWorks 6.2.4. You also can sometimes find AppleWorks 6 on eBay, but it might be difficult to be sure it's no newer than 6.2.4 and has an OS X-aware installer.
Other options would be to contact a local user group or an elementary school to see if anyone has a Mac with AppleWorks & could translate the files for you.

  • Appleworks will not launch

I have MacBook Pro with OS X 10.6.8 running AppleWorks 6. This has been working fine until today when suddenly it will not open. This is also the case for Word and Excel from Office for Mac 2004 and MacJanitor. I have been trying to solve this problem but so far without success. Please could someone help!
    Many thanks.

Did you use Software Update to install a security update a couple of weeks ago? The initial update "killed" PPC apps which use Rosetta. Run Software Update again to get the 1.1 version of the updater to fix the problem.

  • AppleWorks6 just will not open

All of a sudden, my Appleworks 6.2 will not open at all in OSX, but fortunately I still have Classic 9.2 and it does fine there. Restarting in other system is a time consuming hassle. Any ideas out there? Thanx.

Try starting Aperture with the command and option keys held down.  You'll get 3 options.
Try each, starting at the top, in order, checking after each to see if it fixes the issue.
