Appleworks crash

my appleworks continues to crash after I have trashed both preference files. Can I trash the 6.2.9 in osx and then install the appleworks which came with the ibook ( it was in os 9 ) and then update to 6.2.9 ?

You haven't explained what "continues to crash" means. There are a few reasons why AppleWorks may crash. Unless you give us more detail about what is happening we can only guess what the cause is and what the possible solution may be.
Also, AppleWorks has more than two preference files. You may need to trash more than these two files.
And:
Can I trash the 6.2.9 in osx and then install the appleworks which came with the ibook ( it was in os 9 ) and then update to 6.2.9 ?
You may not be able to. Earlier versions of AppleWorks that came on G3 iBooks only worked in Classic/Mac OS 9. If you don't have Classic on your Mac anymore you will have to jump thru some hoops to install AppleWorks again. But if you do, then reinstalling it won't be an issue.
And as Yvan notes, it's likely that it'll make no difference because it's unlikely that AppleWorks itself is the cause of the problem.

  • Appleworks Crashes When I Try To Save Document

My Appleworks crashes immediately after I click "Save" or "Save As", losing the document. I tried deleting all the Applework preferences which did not work. I also tried running the Disk Utility on my entire Hard Drive which did not do anything either.
I was going to install the program again but I am unsure how to go about this as Appleworks was installed on the computer when I bought it. Also, I am wondering whether my files will be saved.
Any help would be much appreciated, my apologies if this topic was previously brought up in a post and I missed it - I did try searching for it and did not find anything. Thanks!
    eMac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Laura
I doubt that reinstalling AppleWorks would be the fix for this problem. But, should you ever need to reinstall AppleWorks from the disks that came with your eMac, take a look at these two articles Apple has written: Knowledge Base article 300316 on installing AppleWorks 6 & Knowledge Base article 61802 on restoring the software than came with your Mac.
I think there could be several unrelated causes for AppleWorks crashing. Since it happens with both Save & Save As... it could be more of an OS X problem. So, the first thing I suggest is repairing permissions using Disk Utility. Then, unless you leave your Mac on 24/7 & not asleep, run a utility to run the UNIX cron routines & clean caches. Two free ones are YASU & OnyX.
Also, make sure your hard drive isn't too full. It depends on how you use your computer, but for most normal users a minimum of 5 gigs free space at all times after installation is recommended. If this still doesn't work, repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility may help. Start up your Mac from the first Panther instal disk. Then, instead of running the installer, go to the Installer menu & choose Disk Utility. Select your hard drive in the left-hand panel & click Repair Disk. When it is done, quit Disk Utility then quit Installer & restart your Mac.
Semi-AppleWorks-related problems could be a corrupt font, but this is more likely to cause crashing when launching AppleWorks rather than with saving.
You deleted AppleWorks preferences, but did you delete all of the preferences as detailed in my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly? There are four different files that must be deleted at the same time. Also, this must be done after every crash.
Last, make sure all of the "parts" of AppleWorks are in the AppleWorks 6 folder. The second part of my same tip explains more about this.

  • AppleWorks crashes on spreadsheet

    Context:
    MacOS 10.6.6
    AppleWorks 6
I'm working on a spreadsheet document with a large table and 5 cartesian
    graphics about the included data.
I tried to open this file from Numbers'08 and Numbers crashed.
I tried to remove the graphics to locate where the problem stands,
and AppleWorks crashed when I tried to save this smaller version
    of my file.
If I remove the 4 first graphics I'm able to save the AppleWorks file.
If I now remove the last graphics, Appleworks crashes when I try to save.
Where may this apparently common problem come from?
The number of students and engineers desperately looking for paper to make
graphics tells the size of the missing keystone of the software empire.

    Thank you Barry,
I believe your suggestions have partly solved the problem.
I had already followed these suggestions, based on an intervention you made in this forum (June 20, 2003): delete preferences AW and file com.apple.appleworks.plist when you thought it was a corruption of preferences AW. It worked for me solving an AW crash following the use of the command 'button bar' from preferences in AW menu after I had created a personalized button.
Concerning the saving of .doc file, the problem appeared after this event of the button bar and exists only when I register modifications from a derived file from an original. Example : I can save a test-1.doc from a test.doc, but not a test-2.doc from the test-1.doc file. Wherever I send the file, even 'saving as'. However I can now be sure to keep the original one.
I wonder if I would be able to create generations of documents from a first file, which I need in follow up of documents - between members of a board - transferred by e-mailing... unless the document appears 'original' coming back by e-mail.
I appreciate your indulgence for my English. You obviously understood the situation.
Any further steps to do to restaure the operations as they were at the beginning ?

  • AppleWorks crashes?

Since installing Leopard on my 12" PB, AppleWorks 6 crashes every time I run it. I have reinstalled it from the disc and installed the updater, but no improvement. I am having a similar conflict with a 3rd party program, Portraits & Prints. It crashes every time I print to my printer. None of these problems occurred while I was using Tiger.
    Help.

I just fixed the AppleWorks crash but trashing the plist in preferences, emptying the trash and relaunching the pgm. However, the same approach has not worked with P&P. As soon as the picture begins the print, the program quits and I get an "unexpectedly quit" message.
    Thanks for your attention

  • AppleWorks crashes in OSX but not OS9

I was working in a database and AppleWorks crashed (standard "the app has unexpectedly quit" message) while trying to copy and paste. I thought if I avoided copy and paste I could get it to work, but then it crashed when I was just trying to delete text. So I rebooted in OS9 and opened the same database document and everything worked fine--no crashes. I did a search and verified that I had only one copy of AppleWorks on my HD. What are the troubleshooting steps for crashing in OS X? Thanks.

    Hi Tim,
Even though you see only a single copy of AppleWorks 6 on your hard drive, you actually have two separate applications, one (AW 6.2.8) for Mac OS 9, the other (AW 6.2.9) for OS X. Both are included in the AppleWorks 6 package that appears in your directory listing.
The likely cause of the crashing is a corrupted preferences file.
Check Peggy's User Tip AppleWorks has stopped working correctly for instructions on fixing this.
Gulliver's User Tip, Apps unexpectedly quit, may also prove useful.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • MS Word, Appleworks, crash on print command

I just bought an HP laserjet P1006 and downloaded the newest driver for it. Every time that I use the print command in MS Word 2004 and Appleworks, they crash. If I strictly use the print button it will print without a hitch. The problem seems erratic since occasionally it extends to programs that don't have a built in "printer" icon, (i.e.-safari, mail, etc) and they won't print at all. They don't crash like msword 2004, the print job just stops before it prints. When I open the print queue and try to resume the stopped operation, I get the message (operation could not be completed, client-error-not-possible ) This happens whether I'm printing directly through usb or networked to airport. Currently I can still print from mail and safari, but have a problem with Adobe, and of course MS word and Appleworks just crash. I reinstalled msoffice 2004 numerous times, deleted printers and re-added them, reinstalled print driver, to no avail.
One thing I tried out of curiosity was to create another user account and try printing from there. It work seamlessly from that account which is perplexing. I only tried it once, and it's possible that whatever is corrupted in my account, may also transfer to that account. I'm very confused and would appreciate any help in resolving this issue. I have include the crash log for troubleshooting convenience to those who understand them. =/
    Thanks, Tom

Thank you for your time in addressing this issues.
I looked into turning off rosetta and some other posts on that thread said you can't do that anymore.???? Something that is working for me so far is just creating another user and giving it admin privileges. Everything prints as it should. Not sure why this works, and I am still holding my breath. Its been working for about 3 days now and no glitches. Still have some files to transfer and hoping it won't bring the dream crashing down. =(
    Thanks, Tom

  • Appleworks crashing on new ibook

I bought a new ibook, opened it and started Appleworks. When I tried to write something it just crashed. Each time I try to type a letter or anything in a document, it crashes. I can open a document, but as soon as I press a key trying to write something, the same thing.
Anyone that has the same problem?
I can post a log file.
    Thanks,
    Vedran.

Thank you for your help, Peggy!
Appleworks works fine now when I uncheck the US extended keyboard in the menu bar.
However, this means that I cannot use keyboard layout for my language (croatian) which is also unicode, and cannot write text with special characters of my language! That is too bad. Is there any way that this can be fixed, or I will have to install Microsoft office? :o(
This is the only thing that bothers me so far with my new ibook, and I dont want it to spoil my otherwise great Mac experience...
Thanks again for any further suggestions you might have,
    greetings from Croatia,
    Vedran.

  • Appleworks crashes on startup

If I try to open Appleworks (AW), it crashes. I'm given options to Ignore, Report or Relaunch. My fix is to delete, in Library, AW preferences. Once I do that, the app will come up. However, if I pull up the Starting Points window Cmd-1 and select "Recent Items,(RI)" AW will crash and again give me the Ignore, Report, Relaunch options. Sometimes, I'm able to get to the RI screen but, if I quit the app on that screen and, later, try to relaunch AW, it will crash as it comes up on the RI screen in Starting Points. Again, my solution is to delete the AW Pref file and, then, the app will start up again. I'm guessing there's a corruption somewhere but don't quite know what to do about it. Should I delete all the files from "Starting Points?" Any help would be appreciated.

Very interesting. The same thing happened to me today. Yesterday I cleaned out the recent documents folder and today it stopped working. I just now deleted the preferences, as you suggested, and it opened, but I wonder for how long.

  • Appleworks crashes w/Exc_Bad_Access Kern_Protection_Failure

On a set of eMacs running 10.3.9 and for a specific group of teachers, when they open Appleworks and select from the palette (say Word Processing) the following error occurs.
Other groups do not have this problem. The same said teachers can go on other eMacs (10.3.9) and have no problems.
Done to date: rebuilt the computers from CDs,re-imaged from clones of the working eMacs, fixed permissions, run hardware tests, removed preferences, removed user library.
Besides this appleworks problem, there is a also a problem using Office 2004. When trying to save or at times save, Word/Excel crash with a EXCBADACCESS dump.
I have sent both these dumps to Apple a zillion times. No response. Any help is greatly appreciated.

eMac client Mac OS X (10.3.9) Runs on school network (xserves - 10.3.9)

This looks to be related to the printer attached to these Macs.
    0 <<00000000>> 0x00000000 0 + 0
    1 com.apple.CoreFoundation 0x901cb2f4 CFStringCompareWithOptions + 0x140

    3 ...e.print.framework.PrintCore 0x91787cd8 CPLPrinterNameInUse + 0x58
These appear to be the lines in the Crash Log that explain the crash. They're saying that Mac OS X gets the list of printer names and tries to compare each of them. The crash occurs when Mac OS X's Foundation API CFString method tries to do the printer name comparison.
Is the crash caused by something as simple as the name of a printer containing unusual characters? Is there a printer unique to these group of Macs? Have you disconnected this printer to see if the programs still crash? Have you changed the settings for this printer to see if this fixes the problem? Have you tried reloading the driver software for this printer?
    Hope these suggestions help.

  • AppleWorks crashes when I try to Save As

When I try to "Save As" an AppleWorks 6 file, it crashes. I'm running Snow Leapord on a Macbook Pro. Here is a typical file name: "Positive Responses.ckw" Is the problem with the ckw?

Check Software Update. Apple has released an updated security update. This does seem to have fixed the problems.
FWIW, I'm sure your AppleWorks files have the extension .cwk.

  • Appleworks crashes after security upgrade

I successfully ran Appleworks 2 weeks ago. I did a "security upgrade" today which updated many files. Now I cannot open Appleworks for a new file, for my 2 week old file, or even on the templates. The starting window comes up and immediately crashes. I deleted the preferences file and the com.apple.appleworks plist. I checked that I have Bauhus 63?? or whatever font was suggested as a problem. What more can I do?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Margie
With thanks to Barry, whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences).
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
(Also explained in my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.)To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.
The security update won't install Bauhaus 93, so if you have it, you probably had it before &, since AppleWorks was working correctly before, I would guess that you have the newer, not-corrupt, version from Word 2004.

  • Appleworks crashes when using  "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" feature

In the past I was able to use the pull-down menu for "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" feature. Recently I found that this no longer was working, as I had trashed the preferences folder and the plist preference file for Appleworks. When I reselected the "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" item in the General preferences and selected OK, the program unexpectedly quit. This happened repeatedly, even after repairing permissions and pre-bindings, trashing the current preferences for appleworks, validating the fonts in the Font Book program, trashing other preferences, etc. It turns out that sometimes I get past the saving step for the preferences in Appleworks, but when I go to the pull-down menu for "Fonts", on the first try, I get a viewing of the fonts in their actual format, which crashes then if I am scrolling down through the fonts list. On the next try, I crash immediately when I highlight the fonts pull down menu. These symptoms are repeatable. Is it that I have too many fonts in my Font Book list? I have 148 listed fonts for my user account in Font Book. Also the font for Equation Editor named "MT Extra Plain:001.001" that I believe is associated with Appleworks is listed as having minor problems by Font Book in the name usability table and in the name table structure. If I delete the equation editor fonts this does not solve the problem. Similarly, If I de-install Appleworks, including preferences, and reinstall it, this also does not solve the problem. Are you able to help me stabilize Appleworks so I can use the "Font Menu in Actual Fonts" feature again? Thank you.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

I looked for this font, yet it is not in any of the Fonts folders, either in the Macintosh HD/Library/Fonts location or in the user account/Library/Fonts folder which I accessed as you indicated via the "Go to Folder" menu). I do find however using EasyFind a file named Bauhaus 93.0_B8B8.ATSD in the following location: /System/Library/Frameworks/ApplicationServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/ ATS.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Fontinfo/. Information on this file indicates that Bauhaus 93.0_B8B8.ATSD is a Unix Executable File. Is this a needed part of the system, and should I delete this?
For your further information, my version of Appleworks is 6.2.9, and per another posting by ptr66 Nov 3, 2008 (http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8397234#8397234), not related directly to this posting, I also have disabled the Autosave and Recent items functions in the General preferences of Appleworks, which that posting indicated stabilize the program. These had no effect. Thank you for your input.
    Sincerely,
    Wilson

  • AppleWorks Crashing When a Document is Opened

I am a law student. I have an Apple G4 iBook and use Appleworks 6.2.9. I save all my class as .cwk documents and use an outline format.
Sometimes, when I go to open those saved documents by double-clicking on the icon, a blank page pops up for a second or two, then the program crashes.
The document will not do this perminantly and will never open in Appleworks again.
This is horrendeously inconvenient and can prove to be a big deal come finals time. Please help with any suggestions (other than buying a PC).

    Hello
Of course, saving a copy in AppleWorks format and an other one in rtf format is a good tip.
But for those who didn't do that, for WP documents, all is not lost.
When such a doc appears to be corrupted from AppleWorks 6 point of vue, just drag and drop the doc's icon on TextEdit's icon.
You will get the file's raw content.
A bit of cleaning and the raw text will be recovered.
It appears that there is some checksum tip installed in AW documents.
Simply change one character in a string content with a file editor like HEXEDIT will make the doc unreadable from AW's point of vue.
If I remember well, this feature didn't exist in not too recent AW versions.
I remember that I used HEXEDIT to make changes in SS strings corrupted by the "autocalc bug", but it was under Mac OS 9.x.

  • Appleworks crashes when "recent items" is selected

After upgrading to 10.5 recently, Appleworks (v. 6.2.9--yeah, upgrade it) when I select the "recent items" tab, I will hear the drive accessing for 13 seconds then the app disappears. After another 12 seconds I get the "quit unexpectedly" alert box.
Files will open if clicked on. Appleworks that is on a 10.4.11 partition still works as expected.
    PROBLEM RESOLVED
While checking on behavior for details while making this post, I found the cause of the problem. When I added an external drive and moved most of my data files to a new location, none of the aliases of "recent items" could link to the new location. When I deleted all of the recent aliases in the AppleWorks folder there is no longer a crash. Previously, when a link couldn't be found, it was greyed out. Guess when none of the links worked, Works had a nervous breakdown.

This is a very old bug described for years.
It strikes also when "Recent items" is not selected!

  • AppleWorks crashing when reopening Presentation

Working on 20 iMacs running 10.2.8 in a computer lab. Suddenly a high percentage of the Presentation projects are crashing on many machines. Had this problem a year or more ago, but upgrade to Appleworks 6.2.9. Now suddenly a problem. Have tried clearing "recent items", trashing preferences, clearing cache.
    Any help?

Welcome to Apple Discussions Ms. Macaroni
When you deleted the AppleWorks preferences did you delete all of the preferences as I describe in my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly? Also, using Disk Utility to repair permissions can fix some odd AppleWorks problems, especially if any updates to OS X or other programs have been done.
Another thought is a corrupt font.
