AppleWorks documents not opening

So I don't really know what I am doing. I have a really old version of Apple Works on my old computer and have taken all the documents from it and put them on my MBP. I have not bought Word, Page 2, or Apple Works. Any suggestions on which one I should purchase? I was thinking I would get the Page 2.
I have the 30 trial for the Word but I cannot open any of my AppleWorks documents. How do I get these open and save them in a way that is compatible with Word or Page 2?
Thanks!

Welcome to Apple Discussions michaeldurant
Other than the fact that your document won't open, your question/problem is not the same as the original poster's (OP's) & it would have been best for you to start a new topic.
256 MB of RAM in OS X is minimal & 512 MB is still on the low side when working with documents with a lot of graphics. The amount of space the documents takes up on your hard drive, 55 MB for yours, is not the same as how much RAM it will use, although the bigger the file size, the more the application & system resources will be taxed. I have a database with photos in a multimedia field that takes 87.3 MB on my hard drive. Checking in Activity Monitor (in the Utilities folder), Real Memory for AppleWorks goes from 15 MB to 41+ MB after opening the DB.
It's possible that one or more of the pictures you added in the last week are corrupt. If you have AutoSave turned on in Preferences & can remember when the last time you were able to successfully open this file, you may be able to find a copy more recent than the 35 MB one. Look in Documents > AppleWorks User Data > AutoSave where you will find documents with files with long names consisting of letters & numbers. Sort the folder by date in List view & try opening one.
Since this is a word processing document, if you have Pages (part of iWork) installed, Pages may be able to open it. Also, a text editor may help recover any raw text, not the pictures, if you need to rebuild the file.
I don't know how you are putting the pictures in the file or what format the pictures are. AppleWorks does best with graphics in PICT format. Even though the PICT files themselves are larger in the Finder, the resulting AppleWorks file will be smaller &, probably, less likely to corrupt. I use GraphicConverter to convert graphics to PICT for use in AppleWorks, but you can also use Preview.
Please post back whether or not any of these work.

    Dear all,
Password protected PDF document not opened with nokia E7-00. Previously I used nokia N79, that time I was able to open Password protected PDF file such as bank email statement etc. Now I can't.
It is quite disappointing with this phone !

    hi mateys,
you may want to search under "PDF" in the Nokia Store, as some solutions such as Picsel Smart Office exist, where they do open password-protected PDF's.

  • Using 10.6.8, internet pdf documents not opening using Adobe Reader; how is this corrected?

Using 10.6.8, internet pdf documents not opening using Adobe Reader; how is this corrected?  I've tried changing "sharing and permissions" to "read and write" as suggested on other help sites, but this did not correct the problem.

I had the same problem---contacted Adobe and their service rep helped me by
    A.   Deleting  Adobe Reader from my iMac's Applications in Finder
    B.   Downloading Google Chrome browser and then
    C.   Downloading the latest Adobe Reader for Mac 10.6.8 in Google Chrome--it works
Adobe acknowledges problem with the latest Snow Leopard update 10.6.8 and with this work around, I can open PDF's using the Google Chrome Browser.
Is this the ideal solution---NO.  Safari is my main browser. I now have to use a separate browser for PDF's.
Am I happy to be able to open PDF's---YES
You can't believe the time I spent to solve this problem before calling Adobe for help. My Apple Care policy expired a month ago . As I use Photoshop Elements, I was not charged by Adobe for their help on the telephone.

  • Updated Appleworks will not open/ updated documents won't open

Am so frustrated! Knew my G4 was almost out of memory. Was at the Apple Store today and bought a LaCie 500GB hard drive AND a new MacBook Pro notebook. Before transferring files to the new computer, Apple told me to "save" my desktop documents on the new hard drive. Worked OK until I got to Appleworks and all my cwk files. The Appleworks icon now shows a blue label under it (huh?) and a small arrow and will not open. Hundreds of documents done on the Appleworks updated (6.2) software I can't open or transfer. Only thing that I am able to open are old documents from my original Appleworks.
Is there any way to get the Appleworks 6.2 open? and moved to the new hard drive? I'm an artist working from home... need these documents! Do I have to schlep the old computer, the new computer and the new hard drive back to the Apple store tomorrow? Help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Lani,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
I don't know what the blue label under the AppleWorks icon means. Is this the Application icon or the icon for an AppleWorks document? The small arrow, if it is curved and located at the lower left corner of the icon, means the icon is an alias to the file.
If your AppleWorks application is indeed version 6.2, you'll need to update further. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest recommended version for current Mac OS X systems (Tiger & Leopard), and the newest (and also recommended) version is 6.2.9.
The following actions should help in solving your problem.
    1. Locate the AppleWorks 6 application package. It should be at Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks. Click on it once to select it, then press command-I to Get Info. In the Get Info window, check the Version number. If it is anything other than 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, download and apply the 6.2.9 update. (See the Caution below.) If the AppleWorks 6 folder (containing the application) is not in the Applications folder, move it to that folder. If the Appleworks application package is not in the AppleWorks 6 folder, move it to that folder.
    2. After any software installation it is necessary to do a system maintenance task—Repair Permissions. Use Spotlight to locate Disk Utility and double click the file to launch the application. In Disk Utility, click First Aid, Select your hard drive, then click Repair Permissions.
    3. Whenever Appleworks is misbehaving an early troubleshooting action is to delete AW's preferences files. This is especially true if you have moved AppleWorks from one machine to another. Look in Home (yourname) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks. Delete both prefs files and both cache files found in this folder.
    4. Click on one of the AppleWorks file icons with the arrow and blue label, then press command-I. In the Get Info window, check if this icon is a file (document) or an alias. If it is a document, you should be able to open it. Check that the Open with section of the Get Info window names AppleWorks 6 as the application to open the file. If not, use the pull down menu in this section to select AppleWorks 6, then click the Change all button to apply this instruction to all .cwk files. If the icon is an alias, you will need to redo the transfer of files from the G4 to the MBP, making sure that what you are transferring are actual files, not aliases.
Still not solved? Re post with more detail on what you do to open the files, and what response you get from the MBP.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Just downloaded Mountain Lion and now none of my hundreds of Appleworks documents will open.  This is a huge disaster!  Please, anyone, I need a solution!

Just downloaded Mountain Lion 10.8.2 to my iMac and now none of my hundreds of Appleworks documents won't open.  What a disaster!  What can I do?

To resize the drive do the following:
    1. Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
After the main menu appears select Disk Utility and click on the Continue button. Select the hard drive's main entry then click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    2. You should see the graphical sizing window showing the existing partitions. A portion may appear as a blue rectangle representing the used space on a partition.
    3. In the lower right corner of the sizing rectangle for each partition is a resizing gadget. Select it with the mouse and move the bottom of the rectangle upwards until you have reduced the existing partition enough to create the desired new volume's size. The space below the resized partition will appear gray. Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.  (Note: You can only make a partition smaller in order to create new free space.)
    4. Click on the [+] button below the sizing window to add a new partition in the gray space you freed up. Give the new volume a name, if you wish, then click on the Apply button. Wait until the process has completed.
You should now have a new volume on the drive.
It would be wise to have a backup of your current system as resizing is not necessarily free of risk for data loss.  Your drive must have sufficient contiguous free space for this process to work.
Now boot your computer using your Snow Leopard DVD:
Booting From An OS X Installer Disc
      1. Insert OS X Installer Disc into the optical drive.
      2. Restart the computer.
      3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
      4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo
          appears.
      5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
Follow onscreen instructions to install Snow Leopard. Just be sure you select the new partition you created as the installer's target so you don't erase your Mountain Lion system.

  • Pages 5.0 update - documents not opening

Pages has been updated to 5.0.  Previous documents had information removed and then will not open saying that a higher version of Pages is required.  New documents I have created since the update will also not open saying that I need a higher version

No, Pages hasn't been updated. Pages has been upgraded, that is there is an entirely new version of Pages named Pages 5.0
Pages 5.0 can open Pages 09 documents but not vice versa. I suspect that you are trying to open a Pages 5.0 document in Pages 09.
Pages 09 is in the Applications > iWork 09 folder.
Pages 5.0 is in the Application folder. The icons for Pages 09 in the Dock or the Launch Pad ins't updated though. You have to do that yourself.

  • Document not opening in Leopard

Has anyone experienced problems with opening documents?
I have all the current updates installed and most of the time things work quite well in Leopard, but not as reliably as they did in Panther on my old Power Book G4. Sometimes documents will not open regardless of how many times you 'cntrl/click' or if you directly click the icon nothing happens when you click the folder or document you want.
I have found that the only way around the problem is to restart the computer and I'm getting sick of watching that spinning beach ball whilst waiting for something to happen.
What a shame; I switched to Mac six years ago and I was completely happy with 10.3.9, but my old Power Book suffered terminal mechanical damage. Now I have this Mac Book which I'm rapidly losing faith in.
Looks like it's back to Windows and from talking to other Leopard users, it would appear that I'm definitely not alone.
    Jon D

Cocktail and Leopard Cache cleaner (amongst others) are shareware apps that just do a little differently what Onyx does for free. So if you're happy with it there's no real need to buy something. I've never used Ice-Clean.
There are a number of utilities you can invest in out there, but I must recommend something that every Mac user should have in there arsenal. A decent Disk Utility. I use both Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro, and I run them as part of a regular maintenance routine, but especially before updating the OS. I have both because they each do slightly different things, but if I had to choose just one, it'd be DW.
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/index.html
    http://www.micromat.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=31&Itemid=83
I also keep a regularly updated bootable clone of my system on an external HD, and it's from there that I run these. They each come with a bootable DVD which takes a lot longer to startup from, so not only is it much quicker from an external HD, but should anything ever go amiss, I can simply clone back, and it gives me a complete backup of all my files too. With external HD's being relatively cheap these days - it just makes sense because you never know.

  • Applework will not open, printer error

When I try to open Appleworks, I get the following error. "AppleWorks could not be launched because of a shared library error "<Appleworks><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_PrintCores>"" This error just happened without making any adjustments to the computer. Prior to this error, the application (Safari, Appleworks, etc.) would unexpectedly quit when you tried to print. That problem also remains. I have an EPSON CX4200 that I bought with the computer.
    Any suggestions would be great.

    2. Trash the AppleWorks folder in your Home -> Library -> Preferences folder along with the com.apple.plist file. (Don't trash the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bar.)
I suspect you have reached the system's preferences folder rather than your own. OS X maintains a set of preferences for its own use, and a set for each User account.
In the Finder (and with AppleWorks NOT running), open a new finder window (command-N), then:
•Click the Home icon with your name beside it.
•Click the Library folder in the list that apears in the next column.
•Click the Preferences folder that appears in the next column.
•Drag the AppleWorks folder in the next column to the Trash.*
•Drag the com,apple.appleworks.plist file in this column to the Trash
*See note above regarding Button Bar preferences.
    3. Use the first aid utility to repair permissions on your hard drive (it's recommended that you run this more than once.
The 'first aid utility' is called Disk Utility. You'll find it in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, but it's probably easier to click the blue Spotlight icon at the right end of the menu bar, then type in "disk utility" (without the quotes). Double click the icon (it will show as the Top Hit) to run the utility, then click the First Aid button in the window that opens, then Repair Permission in the next window. As noted in the User Tips post, it's recommended that Repair Permissions be run more than once (until it reports that Permissions are OK or that no permissions were repaired).

  • Will Lion make my Office documents not open?

I have MANY .doc and .docx documents from my PC days that I NEED. Does this upgrade to Lion make those not open in Pages like they used to? I enjoyed using Pages for .doc and .docx files along with Pages files. I was hearing that Lion makes Office files not open or work anymore. Is this so?

No, no. That's just silly confused people who have old versions of Office which require Rosetta to run (or an older PPC-based Mac), and Lion no longer includes - and can't run - Rosetta.
An upgrade to Lion will not affect the ability of your Pages application to open those files.

  • Why won't one of my Pages documents not open?

I just did an OS X update on my computer. When it restarted it opened all of my Pages that I had open except for one. A box comes up whenever I try to open it and says, it "can't be opened." I don't think it is because of my the version of pages I have because all of my other documents will open. So I don't know what to do, please help.

Back up all data immediately. Do nothing else until that's done.
Quit the app. From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences... ▹ iCloud
    Uncheck the box marked
    Documents & Data
    then check it again.
Relaunch the app. There will be a delay before your documents stored in iCloud reappear.

  • Change appleworks documents to open office

How do I easily(I hope) change AW documents to OpenOffice documents? When I change the "Open with" option in the "Get Info" pane, I get a doc. with nothing but "gobbledegook".
Thanks for any help in this
    Paul

OpenOffice cannot open AppleWorks files. Other than AppleWorks itself the situation is this:
•Word Processing documents can be opened directly only in Pages (AppleWorks 6 only).
•Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings).
•Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in Numbers.
•Presentations can be opened directly only in Keynote.
To use other programs, or open Painting or Database documents at all, you must export from AppleWorks first.
