Appleworks Freezes

Recently, when I've gone to save things in Appleworks they've spontaneously frozen (luckily for me, the screen stays open so I can take screenshots). When I try to force quit it I eventually managed to get the windows closed but the program remains open. I think this might be part of a bigger problem since it happened a couple times with TextEdit as well (TextEdit literally froze up while I was telling my friend that Appleworks froze up). Last time this happened, even shutting down the computer (the normal way) failed because it would not end. I ended up using the power button to turn my computer off (before re-doing much of my work). TextEdit also freezes when I try to save (though it happened a few times when I scrolled through the page).
On a possibly related note, my itunes occasionally decides to load extremely slow as I scroll through lists of songs or do anything. This at first made me think I had spread portions of information out too much over the hard-drive (or however that problem works) but since it didn't always run slowly and I hadn't added anything, I didn't think that made sense.
I'm running my anti-virus (norton) which usually takes all day but I'll post this anyway. I didn't think there were any actual viruses on Mac.

Norton has been on my computer long enough that I doubt it is the problem (though I've been told it doesn't do a good job). Apparently it no longer updates either because I have to renew it (I need to replace it). It has not changed at all in relation to the sudden change of all the things on my computer. It wasn't gradual, it was sudden. Now, all my applications randomly freeze up (generally when I switch or save or try to open something). Even my finder freezes occasionally (like right now). I did have a huge amount of things in my AW recent items list but most of them were no longer in existence. After briefly screwing up my AW by deleting only half of the aliases (they were in two locations or something) I fixed that. Unfortunately, it did not change anything (as I expected. AW had not changed and I did not experience a "slow-down" so much as a "catastrophic drop-off" in performance). My main hard drive has very little on it. I put almost anything I use on my external. My main hard drive has a small partition but it still has 3gb left. Again, I wouldn't think those things would make programs freeze completely, I would expect them to lag (which they don't).
I probably need to know what a 'good' anti-virus program that will clean both my Windows and my Mac (Norton scans them both from my Mac side) sides of the computer.
I think at some point I am going to need to reinstall pretty much everything to see if that works (though I'll have to check to see just how much reinstalling that requires).
I tried looking for the Disk Utility but my finder just froze.
The only thing I can think of that I downloaded recently was a newer (I think) shockwave player (mostly because my schoolwork recently uses it often and it lags a lot. Now it freezes for a minute or two before loading). I'd search it up and delete it but my finder is frozen and I'd probably just have to download it again.
At the moment my Finder, ProVoc, and TextEdit programs are frozen so I need to restart. Add AppleWorks to that list. I was going to save this post and repost it after I restarted but I guess I can't now.

  • AppleWorks freezes when saving as html

I have been using AppleWorks for years, frequently saving .cwk files as .html files using the Save As function. Today after saving several files as html, AppleWorks got hung up while saving one file. Now whenever I do a save as for any format other than AppleWorks, the program freezes while the Converting File window is on screen. I tried trashing the preferences and updating to version 6.2.9, but neither of those things helped. Any ideas what I should try next?

    Hello
Some cleaning in the Recent Items folder seems required.

  • Appleworks freezes when attempting to change a data base field

In a data base I created, trying to change a number in one field will freeze Appleworks. A number can be entered, but any attempt to delete, add to or change the data in that one field causes a freeze. This does not happen in any other field in this data base, nor in any other document, as far as I know. This is a fairly recent problem, and did not occur when the data base was first created.
Is there a way to fix this without losing all the data in that field?
    Thanks!

    Hi Yvan,
I'm sorry, but your link did not help my particular problem.
Can I make a list of the "freezing" field and an identifying second field, delete the problem field, and then re-enter the data in a newly created field? Being efficient (read lazy) I was trying to get away from having to re-enter all the data. There are only 384 records, but the thought of redoing even one field is mind-numbing.
    Anyone else have a suggestion???
    Thanks!

  • Appleworks freezes upon save

Hi - over that last 2 days I have been experiencing a freeze upon save when working in the appleworks wp program. This is a hard freeze, and only doing a force quit can get me out of it. I am using Appleworks 6 on a 14 inch G4 iBook running OS 4.2.8. Is this a font issue. Any suggestions are welcome.

  • Appleworks freezes up...Help!

Three days ago Appleworks word processing started giving me the pinwheel of death and each character and function took almost a minute to happen. I (1) reinstalled from disc, (2) updated to newest version and (3) completely emptied the Recent Items folder. No change. I'm at the end of my rope and need my word processor in the worst way. Can anyone help?

    Hi yogi731,
    Welcome to AppleWorks discussions.
Sorry to hear you've been having difficulty. Did you use the Search feature in the upper right of this forum? You will easily and quickly have found the answer to your question. Always first check there.
    AppleWorks Maintenance Tips
    1. Repair Permissions. Launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in Applications, select your hard drive, and run Repair Permissions.
    2. Delete AppleWorks's preferences files. Go to yourname > Library > Preferences. Locate and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist , Locate and open the AppleWorks folder at this location. Delete the two cache files and the preferences file(s) found in that folder. (AppleWorks will build new, clean, copies as it needs them.)
    3. Delete AppleWorks's Recent Items folder. You'll find it at yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items.
    4. Then I'd empty Starting points Home > Appleworks User Data > Starting Points > Recent; files in there are short cuts to the original file. An over abundance of files in Starting Points > sometimes causes AW to have an attitude.
    5. Sometimes Auto Save causes issues so turn that off then empty it in Home > AppleWorks User Data > Auto Save; remove the file that's there (mine reads 7ED34D3D2AC4E5F8ECEF9DD984BD2A).
All the above is found using Search.

  • Appleworks 6 and OS 10...crash problems.  Any solutions?

While trying to save files, appleworks freezes and have to do a forced quit.  Also takes forever if I'm working with any kind of graphic.

The most likely cause of your problem is  the "Recent Items bug" that has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.
Once you've force quit AppleWorks, there is going to be some corruption of the preferences. Unlike modern apps, AppleWorks has both a plist & a folder of preferences in each user's library. You need to delete the plist & the contents of the folder except for the Button Bar preferences.

  • Can't save my documents!

When I click "save" or "save as", Appleworks freezes and I have to force quit just to get back to my document. Any help?
    Thanks,
    Teri

I think you may have run into the most complained about bug in AppleWorks 6 - known as the "Recent Items bug" - & it can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen. It has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. Take a look at these user tips by Dale Gillard
    AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?
    Recent items not visible/updated
Another possibilitiy, especially since you've force quit AppleWorks, is some corruption of the AppleWorks preferences. For that, you need to delete the AppleWorks preferences.

  • Find/Change window freezes - Appleworks 6.2.9

When I use the Appleworks Find/Change window for the first time after booting up my new iMac, the Find/Change window freezes up and then disappears and then the opened document on my desktop disappears from my desktop, too. I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and a new iMac purchased a few months ago. Why does the Find/Change window freeze up and do that? How do I fix this? Thanks for any help!

The most likely cause is corrupt preferences & is easily fixed by deleting the AppleWorks preferences.

  • AppleWorks 6.2.9 updater freezes at "gathering information"

I'm using AW 6.2.4 Japanese and tried to update to 2.9 international English. Everything goes well until "gathering information." I tried the 2.9 Japanese version and it did the same. Am wondering what I did wrong....

First of all, you can't update one language version of AppleWorks to another language version. The updaters are language specific. You must use the Japanese updater to update your Japanese version.
Apparent stalling at "gathering information" is usually due to having external drives or your iDisk mounted. Even though the updater may find an installed copy of AppleWorks on the start up drive, it checks every mounted drive "just in case" there is another copy. Unmount any other drives & try again.

  • Appleworks 6.2 spellcheck freezes

When I try to open spellcheck I get only a tiny window at the top of the screen which says "1 questionable word" even if I have deliberately misspelled 2. The cursor cannot make anything happen and I have to force quit the program to do anything. Of course I lose my unsaved document. What am I doing wrong?
I just had a new hard drive installed and got the new Appleworks 6.2 at the same time.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions saft
If you are only running AppleWorks 6.2 (no third
number), this problem is likely the spell check
window problem that happened with early OS X versions
of AW 6 when the dock was placed anywhere except the
bottom. Try changing the dock location & see what
happens. The dock issue was fixed in the 6.2.2
update, but returned with 6.2.4. It has again been
fixed with the most recent update, 6.2.9.
I also highly recommend you update to at least
AppleWorks 6.2.4. That is the earliest version that
is stable in OS X 10.2 or higher. You can find the
updater 6.2.4 here. As I said before, the current version
is 6.2.9. You can find the most reliable link to the
6.2.9 updater on this page where you can choose the
appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6
    installation.
Peggy, thank you so much! What a simple solution - but I could have worked for months and not thought of it! I am very grateful to you!

  • Freeze up when opening Appleworks

For some reason I can open my Appleworks files and view but if I go to change or make a new one all I get is that spinning wheel which alternates periodically between rainbow and the quartered black and white. The only way I can use these if I convert over to Windows format. I have tried disk utility, Disk warrior, kicking and swearing. Any ideas?

  • Attempt to delete SS row freezes/crashes Appleworks

Using 6.2.2. Created a simple spreadsheet. Selected a row I wanted to delete and tried to do so (Format>Delete Cells) but, after watching the pretty colors spin and spin, verified with Activity Monitor that Appleworks was not responding.
    Any help would be welcome.

Most likely you have been "bitten" by You have run into the most complained about bug in AppleWorks 6 - known as the "Recent Items bug." There are three user tips in the User Tips Library dealing with Recent Items.
Dale Gillard - AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?
Dale Gillard - Recent items not visible/updated
Yvan Koenig - No More Recent Items
The earliest version stable in OS X is AppleWorks 6.2.4. The current version is 6.2.9. By all means avoid 6.2.7 which was very, very, very buggy. If you ever would have a need to open ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files, I suggest using 6.2.4. AppleWorks 6.2.9 cannot open all of those files & there is no workaround or way to predict which won't open. You can find the updater 6.2.4 here. You can find the most reliable link to the 6.2.9 updater on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation. Be sure to pay attention to the two English version updaters.
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). Thanks to Barry for this wording.
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • OS 10.4 install disk freezes on mounting

OS 10.4 install disk freezes. I had a problem with AppleWorks 6.2.9 not launching. It had been working in my 2-week old 20" iMac Intel Duo updated to 10.4.7. (Restarting solved that problem.) But I wanted to run disk repair from the install disk. After restarted from the disk (holding down C), it was mostly frozen, language selectons, etc. in first window. I was able to launch disk utilities from the menu bar. When I selected HD the selection only showed as a dim gray bar, not blue, and clicking repair was inoperative. This was pretty much the story for the other options: nothing worked including restart, start-up disk and cancel. I could launch the windows but not use or close them. I could not shut down with the power button. In the end the only way I could shut down was to pull the plug. The install disk looks fine. I tried the hardware test feature(restarting holding down D) and a small crude computer and chip display came up with a language choice menu, no menu bar at the top, all choices inoperable. I was able to shut down this time with the power button. I tried for disk repair again, restarting again holding down C, and this time there was not even a menu bar display at the top, just the language choice, inoperable. Power button inoperable. Pull plug to shut down. Permissions repair worked in disk utility in HD/Applications/Utilities.
There have been a number of quirks and problems in the two weeks I've had the computer. There were Mail and Calculator problems, fixed by deleting com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore. At times aliases on the launch bar will launch the Applications folder rather than the application itself. There was a momentary problem with Drag Thing (4.5.2) launching and showing for a time only in dim outline (otherwise works fine).
Imac Intel Duo 20   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   2-weeks old

Actually the problem was not the mouse but how I was handling it. This was discovered after another lengthy work out with Apple Support. (TG for Support!)In the install and test modes the right sensor is not active once the disc is mounted. The left front of the mouse is active. The sides in the front are referred to as buttons. . . . An earlier article may be of interest, ID: 302516, October 07, 2005: "iMac G5 (iSight): Mighty Mouse right button doesn't work when installing Mac OS X." I would say this is solved then, except I have a niggling worry why I seem to be the only one experiencing the problem? Be that as it may, it is solved for my computer: when install is booted only the left "button" is active; the right will produce erratic or no result.

  • How can I freeze (lock) my Spread Sheet layout in Numbers?

How can I freeze (lock) my Spread Sheet layout in Numbers?
I have problems with Numbers changing my Spread Sheet layout
by adding extra Rows while I am not looking, or while I engage in dragging its pages with the mouse to see info on adjacent pages.
The layout I use consists of a Spread Sheet containing 4 "print" pages, ea.  8.5" x 11" wide, with a total of 36 Rows and 28 Columns.
The SS is filled with new cell values daily, but the formulas stay mostly the same. The print pages are visible on the computer screen side by side, and each Row extends over these 4 pages.
It happens sometimes that I have to change a formula while making entries on a cell in "page 4", and then need to "accept"
the new entry and formula "aaalll" the way on the very left of "page 1".  So here I try to scroll left or drag the present view
with the mouse.  I also have to use the "Zoom" at 150 % because I cannot see well on my MacBook Air, everything is rather small.
I suspect that during dragging with the mouse I drag cells or rows without knowing, and that this will add extra Rows derailing some formulas or values because a cell is suddenly in a different Row.
It is difficult to find which Row was added and what values where thus changed.  One just sees 38 rows instead of the orihinal 36!  The only way is to move all the cell values out of rows 37 and 38, and find where theey used to be on the previous day's saved locked sheet.   Needless to say that when that happens twice in a days work, it means a lot of lost time.
I have checked the Numbers Manual and searched Help Info for ways to lock an established cell layout and could noy find anything.
I cannot believe it, maybe I missed something.  I worked for about 35 years with Clarisworks and Appleworks Spread Sheets and never had the same problem, layouts were locked by design, and could only be changed by special procedures.
Now is there a way to freeze or lock the basic layout of a spread sheet in Numbers?
I appreciate your help.   (Numbers 2.3, Mac OS 10.8.5. MacBook Air)

    Hi Numbers22,
I guess I was just beating around the bush to avoid simply saying, "No, you cannot lock the layout." So there it is.
I am not sure why you are scrolling  to "accept" a formula. That is unclear. I guess you building a new formula and need to use a cell from an early column. It is also unclear to me as ot how you are actually adding extra rows. I haven't been able to do it on my machine without clicking the little arrow in the row number or using Option-↑ (or -↓). Option-↑  would add a row above the row you are in if they somehow got pressed. Do you have a program running that could be interpreting something your are doing for those keystrokes? If I was standing at your shoulder I might be able to see what is doing it.
What I am suggesting is that you play around with your trackpad settings so that you are not selecting and tapping in your table while you attempt to scroll. I do have one sheet with two tables side by side with a total of 425 columns and I can scroll past them without modifying them. So perhaps turning off tap to click in system preferences will help. If you have an option to decrease trackpad sensitivity then try that (I don't, but I remember having it somewhere in the past). If you are using a mouse see what you can do to decrease the sensitivity for a click. If your computer is old it could be that the trackpad is wearing out and throwing random clicks. You might try using another input device if you have one.

  • After Quicktime dowloads, it freezes half way through.

I made a QT movie (size 640x480, H 264, K frame 24, frame reorder: yes, D rate: 2.30 mbits, sound: IMA 4:1 mono, about 76MB).  It runs fine on my MacBook. I uploaded it to my website, it was then sent through an email and downloaded to another MacBook Air.  it looks clear and the sound is fine til half way through, then the screen freezes and the music stops, the little dot though still moves along the bottom of the control bar, as if it is still going. Tried downloading again and teh same thing happens in the same place. This happened with another video as well.
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions BigMak
This is likely not a preference issue, but just to be sure, when you deleted the preferences, did you delete all of the preference files as I detail in my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly?
More likely this "freezing" (as opposed to crashing) is a problem with full Recent Items and/or AutoSave folders or a corrupt font. There are three articles in the User Tips Library dealing with Recent Items.
Dale Gillard - AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?
Dale Gillard - Recent items not visible/updated
Yvan Koenig - No More Recent Items
The most frequent cause of AppleWorks quitting during start up is a corrupt font. In watching the AppleWorks start up window, do you see where it was when it crashed? If my guess is correct, it would be during "Building Font Menu." First, look for a font named Bauhaus 93. This font is installed by versions of Microsoft Office before Office 2004. The Bauhaus 93 with Office 2004 is not corrupt. If you don't find Bauhaus 93 you'll need to go through the trial & error of locating a corrupt font. Using the OS X Font Book is not reliable when it comes to finding problem fonts affecting AppleWorks.
The trial & error method of corrupt font isolation involves moving all of the fonts from the various font folders to another folder (the Desktop is a good place) & then moving a few back at a time & trying to launch AppleWorks. When it crashes you will know the culprit is in the last bunch.
