Appleworks Future

I hope his is the right forum for such a discussion. We all know Appleworks Days are numbered. But I, for one wish it wasn't so and would like so see some dialogue on keeping applesorks for another generation. The below was a post in conclusion to a problem (solved!) on AW's slowness on 10.6.1. It states quite clearly how I feel about Appleworks.
I cant believe Apple will just "let Appleworks die" maybe by pulling rosetta next time.
It is Simple, Maybe not slick, but can do most things folks need - for me anyway.
Whether it be a spreadsheet or a quick graphic for one of my web pages. Its all there.
As mentioned I still use WP and save as html for the shell of my webpages than copy and paste in needed code. (something Pages cant do) I've never used a dreamweaver like App! And surely not iWeb.
Hopefully Apple will sell AW to a developer that will update it to intel systems.
-Sandy

As I already wrote in an other thread,
Apple never sold a frozen product.
They were asked to do that for Hypercard and they didn't.
My guess is that it will be the same for AppleWorks.
If some one wish to build a modern AppleWorks, the true soluce is to build a product from scratch.
From my point of view a better soluce would be to build two apps filling the holes available in iWork:
(1) an app able to create a html file from a Pages one
(2) a database program embedding the features available in AppleWorks DB modulus.
It would require less efforts and would give us a decent replacement package.
I'm afraid that we will never sew that because, who will invest to build such products with the possible delivery by Apple of apps achieving the same goals ?

  • Converting AppleWorks files for the future

I have an old eMac that can still open older files. I have a few CDs of various files I have saved over the years that I am trying to convert to formats that will be readable in the future...IE archives, Compact Pro archives, and of course AppleWorks files.
My question is if there is any format that will preserve formatting (boldface, type sizes, etc.) that is likely to be readable in the future? I'm ooking for something editable and more lightweight than PDF.
I thought RTF would be a good choice, but it seems that every app has its own interpretation of RTF. For example, formatted AppleWorks files converted to RTF do NOT preserve formatting when opened in Apple's Preview.

Here is a starting link with information. migrating from AppleWorks to other programs

  • Is Appleworks no longer in Apples future?

We have used Appleworks data base programs for years at our farm. I am dissapointed in that it appears that we will not have this program in the future. Does anyone know Apples intention? Will those of us using data base programs have an alternate?

Only Apple (if anyone) knows Apple's intentions, although they've made it pretty clear that there'll be no further development of AppleWorks, and that iWork is being developed as its successor.
But having no future development is store is not the same as "Dead". Although the application is not being bundled with the new intel based Macs, it does work on them, and will continue to do so as long as OS X PPC applications are supported on tis platform through Rosetta. AppleWorks will also continue to work on your current Mac using your current operating system.
There are many long term Appleworks users who have migrated to iWork (Pages) for word processing tasks, but continue to use AppleWorks for database, drawing and spreadsheet tasks. When and if iWork includes modules that do this work better, those users will likely move more of their work into iWork.
There are already alternates to the database module in AppleWorks, although none of them come as softwared bundled with the computer at no extra cost.
OpenOffice.org <www.openoffice.org> is an open source application suite including word processor, spreadsheet, presentation and database components. It runs in the Xwindow environment, and requires installation of Apple's X11 to provide this environment. The interface is very unMac-like, and there's a lot of re-learning to do to make it useful (speaking from experience with the NeoOffice offshoot, which doesn't include a database, but is written in Java to run directly on the Mac). OpenOffice.org is open source software, and is available for free download from the site.
FileMakerPro looks the most like AppleWorks, but is far more powerful and has a steeper learning curve.
4D (4th Dimension) is another choice in the same 'entepreneureal' level (in terms of both power and price). Again, there's a steeper learning curve, but much more power in the application.
Papyrus <http://www.rom-logicware.com/> is another full suite application that includes a database component. It's less expensive than the two above, and offers a free trial, but other than that, I know little about it.
All four of these are 'relational' database applications, a step up from AppleWorks's 'flat file' database module.

  • Pages 5.0 and Appleworks

One of my "older" friends wanted to update his iMac to Mavericks. He was still using Appleworks (with Snow Leopard) and had a bunch of Appleworks documents that he wanted to keep. I explained to him that Appleworks won't work in Mavericks and I recommended he download Pages. I have Pages '09 and it opens Applework documents and converts them to .pages format.
He downloaded the latest version of Pages. He tells me that he can't open Appleworks documents. I just took it for granted that that Apple would update a word processing app that would work with another Apple product... my mistake.
Why would "they" create a version that won't even open an Appleworks word processing file and convert it to Pages format?
Does the "new" Pages open older Pages documents?
What a crock of s___t! It's very disappointing.

VikingOSX's suggestions are valid, but I suggest looking a little further.
LibreOffice 4.2 [free] is developing very nicely and works with open file standards and has a respect for older formats.
It is developed by users for users and the developers certainly keep them foremost in their considerations. Being non-commercial they do not have the same management pressures for "new", "improved" features and product churn. They are constantly working on converting more legacy file formats such as AppleWorks, ClarisWorks, WordPerfect etc. It will even import pdf files.
It comes in Windows, Mac and Linux versions and does not have heavy hardware or OS requirements. The Mac version still works with Snow Leopard and there are prior versions available for older systems.
It's language support is leagues ahead of Apples, and contains Word Processing, Spreadsheet, Drawing, Maths, Presentation & Database. It supports both rtf and odf files ensuring they can be opened in the future.
It supports right to left langauges such as Arabic and Hebrew, correctly, including inserted left to right languages. Also Hindi, Thai, Chinese, Japanese and Korean, with dictionaries for most languages.
It has clip-art, a Template Centre and an Extension Centre to give it added functionality.
Whilst it lacks some of the polish of Pages in some areas, it far exceeds Pages in ultimate usability and durability.
Most of all it has a future, undivorced from its past files.

  • Opening MS WORD files in Appleworks

I never bought MS Word during the 30 day trial. Now it looks like I'll be getting a bunch of Word documents sent to me in the near future.
I read somewhere here that Word files can be opened in Appleworks. I've had no success with it so far. Could someone please tell me how to do that?
Or, If I do have to buy MS Word For Mac, is there a cheap way to do it? Like an old version or something other that the $250+ they're asking for the new one?
Imac   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   1.25 GHz 512GB RAM 80GB HD with 120 GB XTNL.

You certainly don't need to buy Office. There are several options available.
TextEdit that is included with OS X can open most Word files.
One of the free Office clones - NeoOffice or Open Office for any Office file. Also, AbiWord, but only for Word files.
icWord from Panergy Software - not free but the trial is fully functional. icWord also has the ability to save as AppleWorks. There is also icExcel. These are approximately $20 (US) each or $30 for both.
Pages, part of iWork, can open Word files.

  • AppleWorks versus MicroSoft 2008 for Mac

    Hi ALL,
How is it possible to open AppleWorks files with MicroSoft 2008 for Mac ??
Maybe it is possible to open these files with Excel.
I have a lot of older files I need to open in any application now I running Tiger.
I need these files again, ones these files was a part of a project that is activating in praxis now.
Any help to gave me a good hind or advice ??
    Dimaxum

AppleWorks is available on the CDs which where delivered with you three old machines.
The best source would be the one delivered with the G4 machine.
Insert the CD in the CD tray of the G4 machine, open its icon.
I assumes that you will see a folder entitled "bundled applications"
    Double click it
respond to the asked questions and navigate to a folder containing AppleWorks installer.
Run it to install a clean AppleWorks on the machine.
Copy this folder on a CD for future use (copy also the set of fonts installed with AppleWorks).
Copy the complete AppleWorks folder on the new machine in the folder entitled "Applications"
Copy the fonts in the folder entitled "Library:Fonts"
I assumes that it will be AppleWorks in a version numbered between 2 and 2.4
Using Disk Utility, create a disk image whose size is 150 Mbytes
Name it AppleWorks 62old then copy the entire contents of the folder AppleWorks 6"
After that, update the installed AppleWorks in version 6.2.9 from
    "http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/appleworks629formac.html"
If you are using the continental US version download from the button entitled 15.8MB at right top.
For other versions use the updaters described in plain English.
The old version in the disk image may be useful if you have some old files which AW 6.29 refuse to open. It's a bug which doesn't strike older versions.
There are other kind of install disks.
On some, there is a "standard" folder named "AppleWorks 6"
On other there is a hidden folder entitled "Image" but as you have the machine you will be able to install the program from the installer itself. I don't remember if there is an installer dedicated to bundled programs but I'm sure that with a bit of patience you will find it.
    Good luck.
Don't forget the contents of the license:
one program = one machine. So, if you grab AppleWorks from the G4, you must remove it from this machine.

  • Cover flow re Appleworks

I really like the Cover Flow feature in Finder, but I find that it does not display my Appleworks documents. I'm surprised that my old (forgive me) PC documents from Excel will display, but my Appleworks documents will not. Anyone else noticing this? All other documents (PDF, JPG, etc.) come up just fine.

Yes this is unfortunate, although we can hope that the document quick view will be added with a future update. Apple Works has served me well and I still use it for all my invoicing and database documents, since iWork does not have a database yet.
There are a number of other documents that QuickView can't open, but I haven't compiled a list.

  • Is AppleWorks UnOfficially dead?

So, it has been ages really since Apple even bothered to look at AppleWorks...
Is it a dead project now? Will they even consider updating it to be a Universal App?
I am I guess some of the few who still like Appleworks, and I was extremely disappointed when Apple released iWorks. I thought it would have a new Office like package solution for the Mac users.
When I saw that they didn't include a new version of AppleWorks in iWorks, I really felt cheated with Pages.
I like how AppleWorks is a light application that does not require so much yet delivers enough power to be more than useful under most circumstances.
So, what is the deal here?
Is it over and done with?
Will Apple make a new version of AppleWorks to be included in Pages 07? Or will they just let Microsoft dominate this market?
Just had to ask, cause it has really been a long time since they did anything with AppleWorks. Now that I bought yet another new Apple computer, it being an intel based machine, I was wondering when Apple will do us the courtesy of updating AppleWorks to be a Universal app...
Anyone know what the future of AppleWorks is?

The only thing I actually used the demo for was to print out an old Appleworks document that I couldn't open any other way, so I don't have much insight into how well it works for normal word processing tasks, but I can confirm that there is a template for just an ordinary blank document (which, of course, seems pretty odd in itself, that you'd NEED a template if you just want a blank document...), as well as formatted templates for a bunch of different kinds of normal text documents, like a school report, screenplay, or thesis.
The application certainly gives the impression that what it's really for is to create slick-looking colorful documents that really cry out to be printed on glossy paper, which is probably a mistake if it wants to be taken seriously as a competitor for Word (or an ancient version of ClarisWrite, for that matter), but it does seem capable of basic word processing as well.
I'm not sure it's likely to impress the type of people who actually use those thousands of obscure features of Word that seem really pointless until you need them, but if you just need to type a document and have it look reasonably professional, it's probably an ok solution.
Plus there's a 30-day free full trial version so it can't hurt to try it out.
Sadly, if you need a real spreadsheet or database solution, it's still far behind AW.

  • Appleworks Formula error on import to Numbers

I have devised a spreadsheet for my VAT and TAX in Appleworks (6.2.9 It has worked fine for years. I recently decided that I should try and get it working in Numbers (09) to future proof it. I am having a problem with one of the formulae:
    =IF(X4Y4+AA4+AB4+AC4+AF4+AG4+AH4>0,M4-(X4+Y4+AA4+AB4+AC4+AF4+AG4AH4),"")
This totals selected columns across an analysis row and puts the total in a cell at the end. However, if there is nothing in any of the cells then it leaves the total box blank. This avoids filling the spreadsheet with zeros in empty cells. This works fine in Appleworks but when imported into Numbers, I get a red triangle and If I click on the triangle I get a message that says:
The operator "+" expects a number, date or duration but found "."
The cells that this summing operation refers to are themselves filled by a conditional statement that is designed leave a blank cell if no suitable value is entered. This however, requires no addition and so works fine leaving a blank box if there is no suitable value. I should point out that usually on any line only one of the columns will have a value if it is used at all. The others will still be blank and it seems to be the "blankness" that the formula in Numbers does not like. It does not seem to treat a blank cell as zero as happens in Appleworks.
Should I be expressing this differently? If so how?
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Regards,
    David

  • Appleworks vs pages ?

    Hello,

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me if pages offers more compatibility
to Windows than Appleworks ? (i.e. Word docs)
It is more compatible with Word than AppleWorks is. But it's still not perfect. Try NeoOffice/J if you need almost perfect compatibility with Word, but without the huge price tag.
And is pages supposed to replace Appleworks in the future ?
Yes. Apple's press release when iWork '05 was released stated that with iWork Apple were building a replacement for AppleWorks. It's not there yet though. We still need a spreadsheet, etc yet. Maybe this January at Macworld 2006.

  • Iwork or appleworks or office for Mac - which one?

I have just purchased a Mac mini - my first Mac ever! My first surprise was that it didn't come with bundled software, no word processor, no spread sheet, no outlook (or equivalent). it does have something called ilife but i haven't found out what that does. My needs are simple; all I want is to be able to access my emails through something like outlook, write letters and use a spread sheet. My husband also bought an apple so it would be good to be able to sync our emails as we use the same address. iwork doesn't have spread sheet functionality and neither provides an environment for accessing / sending emails nor a sync capability. Appleworks seems to have some issues with future support and doesn't provide the email / sync options. office for Mac seems to have some issues with functionality (cf microsoft office). Does anyone have any solutions that are not going to cost me more than the MAC itself?

When Apple created a distinctly consumer line of computers it began bundling AppleWorks and a few other programs (which varied from time to time). I’m surprised that Apple has chosen to replace AppleWorks with an incomplete iWork product and stop bundling.
iLife is the package that includes iTunes (for organizing your music), iPhoto (for organizing your digital photographs, iMovie (for editing your movies), and iDVD (for creating your own DVDs from your own music, movies, and photos). It is an incredible package but, of course, doesn’t include word processor, spreadsheet, or database. But you have missed Mail, a very powerful email program. Give it a look.
AppleWorks isn’t going to be supported any long, that’s true, but it currently works quite well and while it isn’t going to be supported in the future, if you found it in a bargain bin it would be well worth getting. Mariner Software makes Mariner Write and Calc and bundles the 2 for under $100. I’ve used both. Does Microsoft sell a student version of Office in the UK? If you have a student in the household you have a legitimate right to buy it. Office might not be available in an Intel native version yet (Universal Binary) but I’m aware of no problems - I’ve been using it with my mini for over a month. RagTime is an all-in-one product like AppleWorks and is offered free for non-commercial use. As such it is well worth the time to download and test out.

  • Can't open old AppleWorks files on new MacBook Pro w/Snow Leopard

Just bought a refurbished MacBook Pro, did the migration from my old (2 yrs) MacBook via FireWire. Many of the old application icons are not appearing in my Dock, just Question marks ???. When I click on a ?, it indicates the name of that app which was there on the old MacBook, but there's no icon & I can't open the app from there. I can't find my Adobe Reader app, & several others, on the hard drive. Maybe I can find a work around for those....
BUT - zillions of files in the old AppleWorks/ClarisWorks files open in sometimes unreadable text, with all formatting gone. I NEED these files!! Please help!!

    VDonkers wrote:
Thanks for your reply. When I try opening an AppleWorks documents with Pages as you suggested I get the message that the AppleWorks document is damaged.
Ahh...then it may actually be damaged. All of my old AppleWorks docs (word-processing docs) are opening just fine with Pages. On the other hand, if the AW doc is a drawing or database doc then Pages might not be able to open it. If the AW doc is a spreadsheet, it might open with Numbers.
Would you suggest that I use Migration Assistant to transfer my older files from my iMac to my MacBook (rather than using the thumb drive?) Will it ask me about overwriting files? My concern is that it may erase some changes to newer versions of documents that were on the thumb drive.
I do have the installation disk for my MacBook and all disks for the iMac.
No, If you still have your AppleWorks installation disk, I would suggest installing it and trying to open the 'damaged' docs that way. Later, if an item won't open in Pages but will open in AW, then resave it in AW as a generic format that Pages will open. In this way you can move these docs from the now unsupported AW and into Pages format. If we wait too long, we may not be able to install AW at some point in the future and then your old docs will be orphaned.

  • Will appleworks function if I upgrade to os 10.6 or higher?

I am currently using an Imac with OS 10.5.8. I use appleworks quite a bit and have thousands of files created with this program. I have heard that if I upgrade to 10.6 or higher that appleworks will not be supported. I can not afford to lose these files, but yet my current systems puts me at a disadvantage in many other areas (specifically the internet, browsers, etc). Can anyone help with this? I use these files almost everyday for work and I don't want to have to redo them in another application.

Snow Leopard (10.6.x) is a considerable improvement over 10.5 but you will find that it is falling behind and some web sites won't work properly, at least in Safari (FireFox is more up to date and handles them better). It is also apparently not being supported any more. However it will run AppleWorks perfectly well - the last system which will do so.
You might like to look at my article on 'Abandoning AppleWorks' which will give you some pointers for the future including a way of continuing to run AppleWorks on a later system:

  • AppleWorks quits when trying to open documents.

I'm having trouble opening any document I have saved on my Mac. Still fairly new to Macs (18 months or so) but loving it until I upgraded to Tiger this summer. Since then I have experienced a few applications quitting unexpectedly which is frustrating to say the least, iPhoto runs extremely slowly, and AppleWorks is the latest culprit. I cannot open any document which is saved to my Mac, unless it it one I created with AppleWorks. All document opened with no problem until just recently, but as soon as I click to open now I am greeted with the message "The application AppleWorks quit unexpectedly. Mac OS X and other applications are not affected. Click Reopen to open the application again. Click Report to see more details or send a report to Apple." Clicking reopen does indeed open the application, but not the document. Even by going via File, Open through AppleWorks, and changing file format to all available does nothing. Am I just being extremely thick, or is something more sinister afoot?! And when I do send reports to Apple when applications quit like this, does the problem get registered and looked into for future development, or do people just laugh at me??!!!

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!

Try deleting AppleWorks' preference files. Sometimes corruption of these files causes strange results.
See Peggy's User Tip explaining how to do this:
    <http://discussions.apple.com/click.jspa?searchID=505306&messageID=607287>
In addition, you should carry out the usual Mac OS X troubleshooting step of repairing permissions on your drive. It's recommended you do this before and after updating Mac OS X on your Mac.
This topic explains how to repair permissions:
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=DiskUtility/10.5/en/duh17.html>
    And when I do send
reports to Apple when applications quit like this,
does the problem get registered and looked into for
future development, or do people just laugh at me??!!!
I doubt very much that anyone laughs at you. This is an automated system that requests the report, so the people receiving actually want it.
I don't believe AppleWorks bug reports will be looked into for future development. AppleWorks hasn't been updated in years and it's very likely it won't be updated every again - it is gradually being replaced by Apple's iWork productivity suite.
    Cheers.

  • While using Appleworks painting or drawing and using Transform

I can't get the little box markers to come on around my image when I want to slant, stretch, or add perspective. Sometimes they appear but only cut in half and they move the image but without any real control.
Can any one help? This is in Appleworks 6.2.9. It came with the computer so I can't reinstall or rather I don't know how. Any help there?
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Transform appears as a menu only in the Paint environment. It shows the same (non-)behaviour in my copy as in yours. Although I was able to get a shape to stretch, the behaviour was not consistent, and was wonky at best. My only suggestion would be to delete Appleworks's Preference files, but this did NOT work in my case.
In Draw, Reshape is an item in the Arrange menu. Reshape places a number of control points on curves, and the usual handles on shapes made from straight line segments. Behaviour is consistent, especially compared to the behaviour of Transform. Check "Reshape" in AppleWorks Help for details.
    Regards,
    Barry
PS: Although I don't think reinstallation will help for this problem, for future reference, AppleWorks is included in the Bundled Software on the Installation disk(s) that came with your G5 iMac. Startup from the Installer disk, but instead of running the Installer, check the menus and choose Install Bundled Software. Uncheck everything on the list, then open the "AppleWorks Languages" folder and check the version you want to install. Click Install.
