Appleworks lags opening new word or spreadsheet pages

I just created a new user acct, and the pages open very fast, but in regular user acct, I click on spreadsheet to make a new page and I get the beachball, and takes awhile to open. what prefs can i delete safely, or is it something else?

If you use an interface utility such as OnyX or Cocktail in your admin
account, that may speed up that account; choosing to run many of the
check box items in the Automation section so caches are cleared and
what used to be referred to as crons, run; etc.
You could also boot from the OSX installer disc and run Repair Disk
from the installer's Disk Utility, so you have the hard drive unmounted.
[Also, consider booting the computer in SafeBoot and run the Repair
Disk Permissions from the computer's built-in Disk Utility; then restart.]
Could be just a permissions issue and larger caches saved under the
admin/user account. Also, if you have alot of desktop clutter, put it into
a single new folder on the hard drive and access it via an alias on desktop.
There are other ideas; and perhaps if you are at a loss later, you'll see
a few posted here. Since you have another account that works, that's
a good first start. Could be routine maintenance is all it needs. I hope!
PS: I heard at some point, AppleWorks makes a copy in some
cache or file, of everything you did with it; perhaps that is an
exaggeration, but by clearing out that file, AppleWorks was said
to work better. Along with maintenance on the OSX, this is an
area worth further investigation.

• How do I open a word document in pages

I brought a document created at work on microsoft word home and am trying to work with it on my mac using pages.  But when I open it a lot of the form is in disarray and I can't work with it.  Is there a way to open a word doument in pages without losing so much text?  I am a new mac user.

Pages does not do Enter fields for forms so it sounds like those are simply being converted to some other space.

• How do I open a word doc using Pages?

I am new to Macs and I have no idea how to open a word document in Pages. I really do not want to keep Windows or Word on the mac so if there is any way to keep Windows off my computer please help.

Welcome to Apple Discussions
If you want to always open Word documents with Pages, you can set OS X to do that. Highlight a known Word document in the Finder, highlight it & choose Get Info from the File menu. In the Get Info box, click the triangle next to "Open With." Click on this drop-down menu & choose Pages. If Pages is not a choice, choose "Other" & navigate to the Pages application. Now click the "Change" button under the text that asks if you want to open all documents like this with Pages. You can then double-click the Word documents & they will open in Pages. Note that the icon for the Word files will have a plain, white icon.

• Opening a Word Document in Pages - floating objects not supported

I am trying to open a Word document in pages. It is a table of labels with artwork and text. Pages tells me that floating objects inside cells are not supported and were deleted. I've tried making them inline with text in the original document and then opening in Pages, but then I can't make them floating again. Anyone know how to do this? I really don't want to have to buy a Microsoft product!

Don't buy a M…soft product, use the free openOffice or the free neoOffice.

• Can't open a Word document in Pages '09

Alright...I have tried to search the forum to see if someone is having the same problem but I haven't seen any. I cannot open a word document in pages. at all. Just says "The document “filename.doc” couldn’t be opened."
Any suggestions?

This was one of the first symptoms of "un-updated" Pages in Snow Leopard. Once again, here are the two things you may not have done that fix quite a few problems in Snow Leopard.
First, use the Mac OS 10.6.3 combo updater. This fixes a problem with the Hoefler Text font that is not fixed using the delta update (10.6.1 > 10.6.2).
Second, make sure your iWork applications are updated. For iWork '08 that is Pages 3.0.3 & Numbers 1.0.3. For iWork '09 it's Pages 4.0.3 & Numbers 2.0.3. If you're not running the latest versions & Software Update says your software is up to date, make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. They must be in the iWork '08 or iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '08 or iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '08 or '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.

I imported and opened a word doc to pages.  When I went to edit all I got was highlighted boxes of text....no cursor or keyboard.  How do I edit an imported doc in Pages?

No, it's a document I created and it's not locked.   I did it at work and sent it to Pages so I could work at home.   It opens but I can't type or edit.

• When opening a word doc in pages i am loosing the graphic images from powerpoint that were embedded in the word doc

When opening a word doc in pages i am loosing the graphic images from powerpoint that were embedded in the word doc

Are the images placed in a table? Many Word user have the habit of doing that. Tables are not handles the same way in Word and Pages so they get "hidden" in Pages. One way to find this out is to change the size of the paper of the document. You do that in the Page setup in the file menu. Create a document that is much longer that the default one and see if you images will pp up.

• Appleworks Icon opens Microsoft Word Trial Instead

Hi all. I'm sorry if this issue has come up before and I just didn't see it (I searched but didn't find anything).
I just bought a brand new 12" Powerbook (oct 31/05). I was looking for a wordprocessing program that comes with the OS (Tiger) and I am under the impression that this is Appleworks.
I searched for Appleworks on my computer and it pulled up an Appleworks icon. When I click on this it opens the Microsoft Word for Mac trial on my computer.
What is going on? I tried this straight out of the box, right after setup (registration, etc.).
I haven't used a Mac in quite a few years, but I'm pretty sure Appleworks isn't Microsoft Word.

Welcome
Select an AW document's icon
cmd + i to open the Show infos window.
From the pop-up menu, choose "Open with application"
select "AppleWorks 629"
click on the button entitled "Change All".
After that, every file stamped with tha AW icon (the ones whose creator is named BOBO) will be open by AppleWorks 629.

• How can I open a word document in pages?

I want to open documents created in Word for Mac in Pages on my iPad.

I was going to say. “very carefully.” You can drag and drop a compatible file onto the Pages dock icon. Depending on what that MS Word content contains, Pages may pop a warning dialog about the document's contents, and the option to view the associated warnings.

• Can you open a word document in pages 08

Quick question however stupid it is
can you open a word document from a pc in pages 08?
sorry in advance if i have posted this in the wrong discussion area
cheers

The answer is as above wrote yes. Does it do it perfectly, the answer is no. Opening a .doc/.docx in Pages'08 will generate a frame warning message I find. I find text and symbols are preserved well, but formatting is not perfect. An example of my own is in the screenshot below. Same page 28 on a .docx but formatting of the document is not exactly preserved as you can clearly see. Where preservation of formatting is critical Pages is good, but not perfect alternative to Word '08.

• Opening MS Word documents in Pages 5.0

I just tired to open a MS Word Doc in Pages 5.0 and it says it can't open it this is going to set me back.  I can still launch Pages 4.3 and open it then save it then open it in Pages 5.0 but I have a lot of documents in MS Word. Anyone have any suggestions.  I wish Applel would have warned us.  This was a great feature in Pages 4.3 why would they take it away.

It works for me if I add the .doc or .docx extension to the filename in Finder before opening it in Pages 5.0 (most of my Word docs in Finder don't have the extension there by default for some reason).  In other words, Pages 5.0 will open Word files if they have the extension in the filename (while 4.3 can open them without that).

• Opening new word document brings up minimized documents

Hi,
Opening a new word document, brings up minimized documents.
This is a long time issue! Which i would rather not have it happen. It's annoying!
Has anybody found a solution for it?

Hi,
I'm not sure about the symptom yet, do you mean when you create a new document, the Word window becomes minimized? If I'm wrong, please provide detailed reproduce steps so that I can do more investigation.
I also need to confirm whether the issue persists when we open Word in Safe Mode:
Press Win + R, type "winword.exe /safe" in the blank box, press Enter, then Word will start in Safe Mode with no add-in loaded. Check if the issue persists.

• Opening a Word doc in Pages

Sorry again for asking another question, yet I forgot to mention this last time:
I've tried to open Word files on Pages and it works ok. But every time that I go to close it (even without making any changes to it), it asks me to "Save as". Does this mean that I have to re-save all my files, because they all in Word format?

Actually, no and yes. No you do not have to re-save all of your Word files. It depends on what you want to do with them.
The file you have open is actually a Pages file which was created by converting the old Word file (which has not been altered at all). If you want to keep it and any changes you have made as a Pages file, you must "save as." The next time you open that file, it will open naturally in Pages. Every time you open the original Word file, since it has not been converted to native Pages, it will go through the same translating process as it did this time.

• Opening .doc (word) file on pages

Hi.
I'm having trouble opening word files on pages. Whenever I do, these "cells" cut off in the middle of the text. What I mean is, if the text is 2 pages long, only one page appears. I can only see it if I go to the section, "select all" and then paste it in another file. So I did that, and pasted it back. However, when I saved it as a word document and tried to open it with Word, there were no spaces, so the formatting was not quite right.
Any help, please?
Here is a screenshot:
As you can see, the text just abruptly stops. I don't know what to do about it.
Thanks for your help in advance!

Is it surprising ?
The User Guide clearly states:
*• Word files can be opened and edited in Microsoft Word on a Mac OS X computer or on a Windows computer.*
Because of text layout differences between Microsoft Word and Pages, an exported Word document may contain a different number of pages than its Pages counterpart. Also, special typographic features and some graphics may not display as well, particularly those using transparency (alpha channels). Tables and column layouts may not export identically. Charts created in Pages appear as MS Graph objects, which can be edited.
As far as I know, the only soluce available when you need absolutely identical display on two universes is to use Word itself.
