Appleworks making own copies

I write a newsletter every month for my customers. As I work on it I "save as" the current month, and then save as I work on it. This month when i go to "recent items", there are 4 extra versions shown, 3 with added numbers before the cwk. I have to open each one to see which is the real mccoy. This has never happened before, so I figure something is wrong, but what? And how to I correct it?

I've never heard of this happening either, and I've visited these forums daily for years.
I have heard of something similar with AppleWorks templates though. But you've said this is happening with recent items.
My suggestion would be to find the original document, ensure it's not in the Recent Items folder, delete all your recent items, and then reopen the original document. Only one recent item will be created for it, and hopefully extras won't be created when you reopen it. You should also follow Peggy's instructions in the 'AppleWorks has stopped working' user tip:

  • How do you stop Mountain Lion from making endless copies and backups of everything?!

I already have a similar topic on this when I needed to figure out how to stop Mountain Lion from making endless copies of my text edit files and I was going to try the disabling of it that someone in that thread suggested, but I can't find where the Versions backups are being stored.
Anyway, tonight I cam across a new problem, when I went into "about this Mac" and looked at my Storage, I had almost 1gb of data in the "backups" section. I just happened to have Finder open when I went into the Time Machine in the status bar and when it entered Time Machine, I had dozens of copies of my desktop. Thing is, I don't have my Time Machine hard drive connected and I don't have a Time Capsule router/hard drive. And don't give me this garbage about how "It's not real backups, it's just a snapshot" or whatever, because the ONLY things that I have stored on my computer that I have altered since I got mountain lion is two Text Edit files and the Finder Desktop (and yes, I have checked almost all the programs I use, and of the things that Time Machine will open in, those are the only things that have backups listed that I can access) and almost 1gb is being taken up completely needlessly with the computer backing up things onto itself. Obviously these are more than just snapshots and are obviously the real files because after throwing EVERYTHING on my desktop into a file, that file is only 3.8mb in size, so that almost 1GB in backups is coming from SOMEWHERE.
The solution I aluded to in my first sentence also depends on going into the Terminal to make each individual app stop auto saving Versions, however, since my desktop is being backed up, there's no program to stop Mountain Lion from doing that.
Can anyone help me figure out how to make it stop backing up? Seriously, almost 1 gb is being totally wasted on a series of desktop items that are 3.8mb in size, one Text Edit file that is 250kb in size, and another text edit file that is 41kb in size. What person in Apple would possibly have thought this endless backing up of files onto the main hard drive would have been a good idea? So in a year if I did nothing but go on the internet, save one picture to one file on my desktop and did nothing else with my computer, would I have 200 gb of desktop backups that the computer saved onto itself? Are you kidding me? OR failing that, can anyone tell me how to find this damned backup file and delete it? I'm not an idiot, I know how to plug in a hard drive or flash drive and backup my information, I don't need my computer to be making hundreds of copies of every single file on my computer that I change slightly onto itself that not only needlessly eats up it's own space, but if the hard drive died, all those "backups" would be gone too because it wrote the backups to itself.
I am so frustrated by this totally ridiculous and wasteful "feature" they put in, it does nothing but waste hard drive space with it's hundreds of copies of everything you alter slightly. And I am absolutely not starting any video editing projects until I figure out how to turn this off. If around 4mb of total text and desktop backups add up to almost 1gb in a few weeks, what the heck is a video editing project going to end up in with size? Am I the only one completely flustered by this ridiculousness? Is there any point in writing into Apple to complain or are they just going to say "No, we're brilliant, we think this is an amazing feature so you just have to deal iwth it and when your hardd drive fills up, too bad, jerk!"?? Help! Thanks!

Well as I pointed out in my post, "Sadly, my Text Edit documents are still all there, every single time I opened them and made a small change, there is another copy stretching all the way back to the day I installed Mountain Lion." so if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will concede that it is a good idea. Short of that, no I have been capable of making my own backups since I was 16 years old (16 years ago) I don't need my computer to endlessly do it for me in a way I am completely unable to shut off. That's what I have external hard drives, flash drives, a DVD burner, Drop Box, E-mail (as in emailing copies to myself) and icloud for. If I am doing something and I don't have access to a single one of those options, I don't know why I brought my computer with me in the first place. And I don't see how you can say it's an illusory gain in disk space, hundreds of copies of text documents, garageband files, Final Cut files, Motion Files and basically any program that makes files onto my comptuer that I can myself make incremental changes to, those all need to be stored somehow. Again, if you can explain to me how July 26 - Aug 16 is a week, I will agree with you that that is a good thing because IF it only saved for a week, it wouldn't be an issue. Sadly, no matter how many links you post, I still have text edit backups stretching from today back to July 26. They're not going away and I have no reason to beleive any other file I edit is going to go away either since they haven't been. They're all there eating up HD space and this imaginary "week" limit is simply not coming into effect. I hate it and there needs to be a simple way to simply shut it off. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars on external drives just for my main hard drive to be filled up with hundreds un useless, undeletable backups of stuff I already have backed up.

    Hello mb_bernhardt,
Welcome to the HP Support forums.  I understand that your Officejet Pro 8600 Plus printer is giving you a Printer Failure message and then the printer shuts down.
I’ve included the A 'Printer Failure' Message That Might Include an '0x610000f6' or '0x61xxxxxx' Error Code Displays o... document.  If the error message that you’ve received includes an Error code there is one set of instructions to follow, and if there is no Error code  there is another set of instructions to follow.

  • Making own Templates for iPhoto

in iPhoto `08, when you export pictures as a website, you can choose either a default template or one with bordered images.
I wondered if there wont be more templates with the time. As long I figured out where those Templates are stored. Depending on the localization you can find it i.e. in:
    Photo.app/Contents/Plugins/HTMLExporter.iPhotoExporter/Contents/Resources/German .lproj/Templates
I tried to make an own template by modifying a copy of one of those templates. It works pretty fine. But there is one problem:
iPhoto uses as variable stuff like <ipt_photo>, or <ipt_links>.
I can change any html synthax I want in those templates, but when I set those iphoto synthax just on another place, iPhoto doesn't translate them anymore, when it proceedes to generate the html files.
    Anyone any idea???

Why not use iWeb where you have 24 frames and 26 customizable page themes to use? Much more flexible than the limited web export from iPhoto and no hacking required.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Numbers keeps making Folder copies

I just upgraded Numbers to its latest version and as soon as I did, I begin having a problem using files. About every few seconds the program automatically makes a folder on my desktop with the name of the file.folder. Inside is 2 MB of previews, data files, metadata files, etc. And as I use Numbers document, it just keeps making copies of this folder. It just made 20 copies in one minute. This is very irritating and not needed. Please help me remove this glitch. Also, I am upgraded to Yosemite OS.

That sounds a lot more like something that StuffIt Expander would do than something Numbers would. There is a preference setting in Stuffit Expander to automatically expand archives in some watch folder, by default the Desktop. Since a Numbers "file" is a specially tagged zip archive of a folder, and Expander is too dumb to recognize the special nature of that document, every time Numbers autosaves, Expander creates another folder.
I would consider it a bad idea to let Stuffit automatically expand anything.
A lot of people also consider it to be bad practice to save files on the Desktop.

  • How to synch multiple ios devices without making multiple copies on Mac

I keep most content on Mac Mini.  Prior to Christmas, we were using about 200 GB of the 750 GB hard drive on the Mac Mini.
At Christmas, we added 5 iPads for the family.  We synch each iPad to a shared iTunes library on the Mac Mini.  Suddenly, the entire 750 GB of hard drive on the Mac Mini is FULL.  I strongly suspect that the reason is that when we synch (or backup) all 5 iPads, multiple copies of the exact same content (mostly movies) are getting created on the Mac Mini.
How do I configure the Mac Mini, iPads, or synch within iTunes to NOT make duplicate copies of content?  For example, if each IPad has movie "ABC" synched to it, we don't then want the Mac Mini to have 5 copies of movie "ABC".
    Thank you.

Yes.  The serial parameters cluster that contains the slave address is something you will just programmatically change as needed as opposed to using a front panel control.
By the way, you don't need to have 30 copies of the index array.  Create one copy.  Expand the bottom downwards.  It looks like you start at #16, so just wire a 16 at the top, the ones below it will be successively 17, 18, 19.....  If you need to jump to another number, then just wire a constant in for that one.
You also have some awkward datatype conversion to the dynamic datatype.  This is going to cause you problems somewhere down the line.  If you want an array from 3 scalars, just use Build Array!

  • Lightroom 3 making duplicate copies of recent imported photos by itself?

I use Lightroom 3 and recently it has started making multiple duplicates of recent imported (and exported) photos without me doing anything.... what happens is I import a batch of photos, make adjustments to them, export them... close lightroom.
Then when I reopen lightroom, the previous imported set of photos have all been duplicated and sometimes there is more than one copy of each photo.
Is there anything I can do to stop this? I'm pretty sure I didn't change any settings to make this happen.

Lightroom never does anything by itself. It only does what you tell it to do, either you tell it to do something specifically, or you tell it to do something accidentally.
Perhaps in the export dialog box, you have (accidentally) selected "Add to this Catalog"?

do you use mobileme? if you do it could be corrupt sync data. then disable and reset syncing

if that doesn't help or you don't use mobileme quit Address book and delete the file homedirectory/library/application support/address book/AddressBook-v22.abcddb. then start Address Book and see if it behaves.

  • Can iPhoto work in tandem with Bridge without making duplicate copies?

I recently purchased an iPad and want to move some photo collections on to it. I currently use Bridge to manage my collection of many thousands of images, but it obviously does not let me easily sync with any kind of i-device. I am hoping that iPhoto can behave in a manner similar to iTunes in that it can act solely as a database and point at the original image residing with the structure create by Bridge.
I do not want to keep two copies of the images, those in Bridge and another set in iPhoto. I see under advanced settings, there is an option under "importing" to copy items to iPhoto library. By unselecting this, will I achieve my goal of simply pointing at the original file?
I suppose I can dump Bridge altogether, and just use iPhoto, but I am not sure I am ready to that as of now.

    Yes -- and no
Yes you can reference the originals photos by unchecking that option
No - you will have problems
    - if you move the "original" iPhoto will lose access to it
    - if you edit the photo in iPhoto the edited version will be in iPhoto and Bridge will not know anything about it
    - if you every upgrade your hardware or replace it due to failure iPhoto will have problems

  • Making own kernel patches?

    Dear archers,
I had to change a file (saa7134-card.c) in kernel source to make my Avermedia TV Tuner work. But i must try to change some code in the file several time. It's not a problem if i'm compiling the kernel by traditional way, but if i follow the arch way, it's so time consumed because i had to extract the original kernel source and then edit saa7134-card.c file again. Then, some questions pop-up in my mind...
    1. How do i edit a file in kernel source tarball and put it again in the tarball?
    2. How do i make my own kernel patch?
    3. Do pacman always extract the sources tarball and overwrite files in $startdir/src when i do makepkg? is it possible to skip that step in makepkg process?

Your best bet would just be make a diff file and add that to your PKGBUILD. Just make the changes and save it under a different file name. Use diff to create the file and then use patch to apply it in your PKGBUILD. Here's how I do it
    patch --ignore-whitespace <$startdir/right-click.diff $startdir/src/$pkgname-$pkgver/src/adesklets.c

  • Making own relay board connected via USB

Hi, I going to do my first big project in LabView. I need 3 relays, 1 input (temperature) and maybe 1 pwm. I look after oficial relay boards, but its too expensive for me. So I want build my own relay card controlled by some microchip. Or if you can recomend me some cheap relay board, it would be great (something like this http://www.selfcontrol.cz/re3usba.htm or on ebay http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_sacat=0&_nkw=relay+card+usb )
    thanks

so I try arduino and works well, but Im afraid of is labview is the rigt software for my program, can someone tell me is this things are possible in labview:
main thing is that i put from 3-30 steps in each step I define motor(on/off), heating(on/off), atc. is there way that I can manage number steps (I want 5 steps program, so labview shows me just 5 inputs)
save some values into file and reopen it
recording temeperatures, times, on/off state of motor/heater into file/image
some learning system (I need heat water to 62C but there is some thermal inertia of heating element, so the first time I can cook manualy and program will learn values when it should stop)
     simulating
    gradient of heating (1C/minute)
compiling program into exe file compatibile on every computer
    OR
I thinking about programing it in some Objective-C or something like that, but I have no expirience, can you recomend me some easy to lern object language?
    thanks very much

  • Making Saved Copies Non-Editable

I have developed a form that we need to send to customers for them to fill out and send to us to order services. The problem we have been having is that the customer tends to "recycle" saved copies and just change the fields they think are important. Often they end up missing a lot of important stuff and they end up sending us the wrong information. What I would like to do is force the user to save a copy of the original (which is the easy part), but I would also like that saved copy to no longer be editable, forcing the user to open the original copy and start again from scratch for each order. Is what I am asking possible?

It is hard to protect people from themselves. You have many options.
    1) Have them electronically sign the document, this could make it more difficulty for them to change the content.
    2) Create a form with a send button. The pdf file could then submit their order data to a server or via email to your company. You could save the order data on their computer incase there is an issue, but have the send button script clear the form data when finished. You, of course, would need to send them finished form back to them with an acknowledgement. Of course, what you send back to them would not be editable.
    3) You could probably create a button script locking all of the fields. See Acrobat Scripting forum.

  • How do I duplicate hard links when copying with Finder rather than making two copies of the file?

I have 1.6 TB of Video on one external drive. All of this was imported using iMovie and lives mostly in iMovie events. I then decided I wanted to use Final Cut Pro X for some additional flexibility.
I opened FCPx and imported the iMovie events and movies. As I expected, FCPx made hard links to the files in the iMovie events rather than wholesale copying the events into the original content area. I have found that it is much easier to keep all movie content on one disk rather than having is spread all over creation, so I am trying to make a copy on another larger drive.
I am trying to use Finder to copy the files rather than some other more obtrusive option using the actual applications. The problem is, when I use the finder Copy function, all files that had hard links in the file system are now phyiscally copied twice and are actually duplicated on the new disk. This doubles the size of the the content on the new disk and completely ruins the reason for moving the files in the first place.
Now that I have finally figured out what is going on, I guess I can figure out the proper Unix style commands in the Terminal to make happen what I expect, but I would much rather have Finder duplicate a link if it finds a link. I really want to be able to use iMovie or FCPx on the Event content and only have one copy of the content unless I want to make a modification in one or the other.

    Mark,
I have had a similar problem lately.  I use rsync to perform nightly backups from one internal drive to another.  I noticed (after I started using Final Cut Pro X) that my backup drive had 300G more disk space allocated.  It was only after a long and painful debugging process that I figured out that FCPX had created hard links to my iMovie Events.  I don't have a solution to this problem yet but I wanted to at least mention that I have run into the same challenge.
    Regards,
    Greg
