Appleworks on iBook G4

I've been trying to delete a document on the Appleworks wordprocessor on my iBook G4. There's no delete key on my keyboard and I've tried everything else I can think of, but to no avail! Am I missing the obvious? I'd be so glad of some help.
Thanks!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
You can't delete a file from inside AppleWorks. You will need to find the file in the Finder (you can click on the Desktop in the background to switch to the Finder) and delete it from there.
If you click on the Desktop, in the upper, left-hand corner of the menu, the name next to the blue Apple logo should be "Finder". Then press the Apple key and f key at the same time to open up a "find" window. Type in the name of your document to start looking for it. In the window that appears with the results of your search, you can select your document by clicking on it once and then press Apple and the delete key at the same time to send the document to the Trash.
-Doug
P.S. If you click on the blue Apple logo menu and select "About This Mac" the window that opens will tell you which version of Mac OS X you're using. There is a difference in the way a search works between Mac OS X 10.3.x or 10.4.x so the steps to look for a file may be different.

  • Appleworks on iBook G4 install dvds?

I have a mid-2005 G4 ibook and i thought the installation dvds came with appleworks? when i do a custom install or go to add more software all i see as appleworks options are the language selections. can someone help me out? thanks!

Yes, it's very confusing, but the so-called language options are the different language varieties of the actual program. Just pick the one(s) you want and install.

  • Dictionary tooltip in Safari?

I remember reading somewhere that tehere's a way to lookup words from dictionary without opening that dictionary app. It said that I had to hightlight the word and then press some buttons and click, or something similar; but I can't remember what it was. Or maybe there's a special program that I have to install? Please help.
    Thanks, Levi.
P.S. English is my third language that's that's why I really need this.

As well as Safari, this technique works in Pages, Mail, TextEdit, World Book and others. I find it best to hold down the Control and Command keys, press D, then move the cursor to the desired words, whilst still holding down the Ctrl and Cmd keys.
In the window that opens up, the Oxford Thesaurus (as well as the Dictionary) can be accessed from a pop-up menu, whilst clicking in the window's title bar reveals a contextual menu.
Quite a useful tool. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work for any PDF files, whether opened in Preview or Adobe Reader. Of course, it is not available in AppleWorks 6.

  • Appleworks crashing on new ibook

I bought a new ibook, opened it and started Appleworks. When I tried to write something it just crashed. Each time I try to type a letter or anything in a document, it crashes. I can open a document, but as soon as I press a key trying to write something, the same thing.
Anyone that has the same problem?
I can post a log file.
    Thanks,
    Vedran.

Thank you for your help, Peggy!
Appleworks works fine now when I uncheck the US extended keyboard in the menu bar.
However, this means that I cannot use keyboard layout for my language (croatian) which is also unicode, and cannot write text with special characters of my language! That is too bad. Is there any way that this can be fixed, or I will have to install Microsoft office? :o(
This is the only thing that bothers me so far with my new ibook, and I dont want it to spoil my otherwise great Mac experience...
Thanks again for any further suggestions you might have,
    greetings from Croatia,
    Vedran.

  • Spell Checking on AppleWorks 5 for iBook Clamshell (original) Tangerine

I am a first time Mac user. I am using an iBook clamshell Tangerine color. I can't seem to work the spell checking in the Appleworks 5.0. I click onto it from either the toolbar or in the menu and it does not allow my select the document I want spell checked. Does anyone have a solution? I love my unit, it is so retro but a little antiquated. Help!!!
iBook (original) Clamshell Tangerine   Mac OS 9.2.x   Refurbished unit

Before you update your RAM and OS you may want to verify what your firmware is. You need to have a firmware of 4.1.7 to be able to use a 512mb ram stick as well as increase funtionality in OS X, see this article....
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75128
This update (if you need it) must be done on a Bootable OS9 drive, NOT the cd's.
If you need help confirming your firmware in OS9, please post back. If I can help I will try and post back then.
    Hope that helps...

  • How do I extract AppleWorks from my 'dead' iBook G4 to my Intel MacBook?...

I quite liked AppleWorks, it was good enough for me, little did I realise Macbooks don't come with a proper non-trial word processing facility - so I suppose Apple expect me to buy it, or the predecessor again.
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Well yes, I have the Panther Install and Restore discs that came with my defunct iBook G4, and also Tiger discs I bought to upgrade the OS after fitting a new hard drive, the Intel Macbook will not accept the Panther discs, and I couldn't find Appleworks on them anyway - maybe the machine came with it and Sound Studio (the two things I use most!) 'bundled', it's an expensive luxury keeping a mac I tell you.

  • IBook g4 (late 2004) Appleworks??

I recently had to do an erase/install on my iBook G4. I had Appleworks 6 on it I swear and after the erase/install it isn't there! I have both original install disks. Does anyone know if Appleworks was on those disks? Where else could it have come from? Please help!

AppleWorks is included in the bundled software that came with the iBook (all versions), but is not installed by default.
Startup from the first install disk, but instead of clicking Install, look at the menus and choose Install Bundled Software.
That should give you a list of the included software. Go through the list, unchecking all the checkboxes. When you come to "AppleWorks Languages", click the disclosure triangle to show the list. Check the version(s) you want to install, then continue down the main list, unchecking everything else (you've already installed all of them). When you get to the end of the list, click Install to install only AppleWorks.

  • I build databases with appleworks over 10 years on my ibook, and continue to add to them. Now I have a macbook pro. How can I translate the databases to a compatible program?

Over 10 years I have built several databases with Appleworks. Now I have a macbook pro. How can I translate these databases to a 10.6.8 program?

Thanks Joe, but that won't work. I've finally found a site that answers the question: http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page1.html
I can only say that by Apple I have been royally screwed. I'll never buy another mac -- everything I do would simply disappear into cyberspace.

  • Is it possible that a document (in this case an Appleworks or Movie Magic Screenwriter) can be lost forever, but it's contents somehow remain as other file types elsewhere? I have an old hard drive and I need to locate the contents of these files.

I have a 20 gig hard drive from a 2001 iBook. When my iBook crashed back in '04, there was a screenplay on there that was not saved anywhere else. It has tremendous sentimental value to me, and I would really like to retrieve it. I've ran some data recovery software that's uncovered a gargantuan amount of data, most of it being completely unreadable to me.
Additionally, I have found an AppleWorks file that could be the script, but it is ZERO bytes in size, and Pages won't even open it, saying that it is not a valid AppleWorks file.
So I'm curious...is it possible that the document is lost, but somehow the contents of it are somewhere else on the drive as metadata in other unreadable formats. And if that's the case, how would I go about translating the unreadable data back into something that IS readable?

    Hello,

if the size of this file is really ZERO bytes, either the original file contained an empty data fork and a resource fork which was stored elsewhere (*) or the file is too damaged to retrieve anything. Moreover, as AppleWorks never generates file with empty data fork, at least to my knowledge, ....
Concerning the Movie Magic ScreenWriter files, the application seems to exist for Yosemite http://www.write-bros.com/movie-magic-screenwriter.html ( but it seems "expensive"  and I do not know if it accepts to import old files )....

  • Questions on upgradeing my ibook further

Hi Kanari here! I'm close to geting a job and once I do I was hoping to get a 128 or 512 mb ram stick from welovemacs.com. once that's done i was going to find a cd of panther either on craigslist or on ebay. I've already updated my os to 9.2.2 and the firmware as high as it can go. The thing is that writing is a big part of my usage of my computer and i've been using word 97/98 (i don't know which!) I'm willing to buy appleworks 6 if something equivilent is not installed with panther. One more thing before I post is there a usb wi-fi reciver availible for panther/clamshell. Thanks for any future advice i hope that it'll be helpful.

If you have a firewire iBook 366/466mhz, Appleworks 6 can be found on your iBook software installion disc (additional software). Older iBooks came with Appleworks 5
You can use Appleworks 6 with OS9 or OSX (after installing the update)
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/AppleWorks6_2_9_forMac
An alternative to Office 2004 is Office v.X which was the first version built for OSX.

  • Appleworks bounces but will not open

Please help! my appleworks applic. seems to have died! It's still there, but only 'bounces' as if opening and then nothing. I deleted the package and re-installed it with my friends, directly fire-wired from his laptop, but still it won't work. I have installed a Word package to use, but that just 'bounces' too. I have installed an iwork package (pages & keynote) which works ok but i can't use this for a lot of the things I need appleworks for nor can I open any of my appleworks docs which i need.
I have run checks on my hardware & software, but it says it's all fine.
I think the error occured after plugging in my supposedly mac-friendly walkman phone which crashed my ibook, when I had appleworks open. I have consulted a number of 'experts' but no one has any solutions.

  • Appleworks bounces once and doesn't open

I can't seem to get Appleworks to open- if I click on the icon or go to applications and click it there, it bounces once and then stops. It does not open. Any thoughts? It seems to be a different problem than recent "won't open" subjects. I have not changed it in any way or reloaded, etc.
I'm using version 6.2.9 on my ibook G4. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Scott,
You are having a problem with a completely different program, so your problem is not the same. Other than my suggestions to purplesally to use Disk Utility to repair permissions & to create a new Dock icon for AppleWorks, the solutions are unlikely to assist with a problem with Mail. Since we never heard back again from purplesally, we don't even know if those suggestions worked.
When looking for solutions to a problem to a specific program, the best place to start is a forum for that program or your operating system. For you I suggest the Printing & Faxing forum in the Category: Mac OS X v10.3 & earlier & then choosing the Mail & Address Book forum or the Using OS X forum.
However, some basic OS X troubleshooting/maintenance steps might help you. So, the first thing I suggest is repairing permissions using Disk Utility. Then, unless you leave your Mac on 24/7 & not asleep, run a utility to run the UNIX cron routines & clean caches. Two free ones are YASU & OnyX.
Also, make sure your hard drive isn't too full. It depends on how you use your computer, but for most normal users a minimum of 5 gigs free space at all times after installation is recommended. Power users may need more.
If this still doesn't work, repairing your hard drive with Disk Utility may help. Start up your Mac from the first Panther instal disk. Then, instead of running the installer, go to the Installer menu & choose Disk Utility. Select your hard drive in the left-hand panel & click Repair Disk. When it is done, quit Disk Utility then quit Installer & restart your Mac.

  • Appleworks no longer launches after 10.4.6 update

Could use some advice if someone has solved this one. Running 6.2.9 version of Appleworks on my Intel iMac, (mainly for keeping the daughters homework in sync with her 466mhz/Lime-iBook). And it was always running just fine under 10.4.5. Did the 10.4.6 update and now it repeatedly "unexpectedly quits". Choosing "Get Info" reveals that there is not a box to check to launch in Rosetta, as with some old apps, but checking the report log, it is crashing after launching in Rosetta.

  • Can't print from Appleworks 6

My wife's computer is a G4 Sawtooth, running OSX 10.2. Printer is an Epson Stylus Photo R220. All of the sudden, we can't print from Appleworks word processing. When we try, the printer window from the Print Center says that it's opening communications with the printer for a bit, but after a short time stops the printer and quits trying. The thing is, we can print from MS Word. Also, this computer is networked to my G4 ibook (10.3.9), which has an Epson Stylus Photo 825 attached. Using printer sharing, I can print through Appleworks to the Stylus 825 from the Sawtooth.
This is a sudden onset problem. Yesterday she could use the R220. Today she can't. I've tried reinstalling the printer driver, with no effect.
At about the same time, in what may or may not be a related problem, I stopped being able to print from either computer to my HP laserjet 4050tn, which is on an ethernet print server. Reinstall doesn't help.
I had an intel mini whose harddrive died attached to the network. The mini is still out for repair, but I've also used both of these printers successfully since the mini was disconnected.
    Any ideas?

Sudden onset of problems is a sure sign of corrupt preferences. Printing problems are among many that may be cured by deleting the AppleWorks preferences. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more information.

  • IBook G4 - Upgrade or Buy New System

I need help making a decision: is it reasonable to upgrade my iBook G4 (RAM, operating system) (+bigger hard drive?); or do I need to abandon it and buy a newer system? My considerations are: 1) DC-inboard is probably flaky. Even with a new power supply and power adapter, the battery intermittently stops charging (the LED light goes out). I have to unplug it from the power strip and move the plug to a different outlet on the strip to get it going again. 2) I'm using Safari 1.3.2 and more web sites are thumbing their noses at my "unsupported/outdated" browser. 3) The other software I use is fairly basic: MS Word 98 (running under Classic); Reunion; Photoshop Elements 2.0; Appleworks 6.0. 4) The hard drive has about 15mb free. 5) It might be Christmas but I am seriously unemployed, which is why I have been waffling over this decision for months. Thanks for y'all's suggestions.

    Hi, UUWoman:
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It might be Christmas but I am seriously unemployed
That's a difficult place to be. I know as some of my family are there. However, even with your tight finances, it seems to be that updating your computer will be more cost effective than purchasing a new or newer computer. Let's take your issues in order..
    1. We'll begin with the HDD. Your drive is dangerously full. Besides, your computer is now 5 years old. The average life of a laptop internal HDD is 3 to 5 years. So in addition to your drive being too full it is liable to fail without notice. I believe that is your top priority. You can buy a new HDD for $50 to $100. If you can install it yourself you will save $75 or so. The DC-in board can be changed at the same time. Cost less than $20.
Instead of Safari I suggest you try Camino 1.6.10, which looks like Safari, but it is faster, more stable and more powerful. Free download.
So, your costs so far would be, let's say $75 for a new HDD, $20 for the DC-in Board if you do it yourself, or add $75 for installation. For less than $200 you will have your computer functional again. You will need around $700 for a used MacBook or $1000 for a new one.
May I suggest that if you are unable to upgrade your drive and you have valuable information on it, that you back it up immediately. You can also try to lean things down, but with so little HDD free capacity you hardly have room for working. Dr. Smoke's FAQ Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk is an excellent guide for clearing some breathing space.
Please do post back with further questions or comments.
