Appleworks on intel mac?

I have an old ibook with disks, and I just bought a new imac. Although I am a huge mac fan, I am very disappointed to see that I have NO word processing program on my new mac. Is it not possible to use my old software disks to put appleworks on my new mac?
Gosh, I know mac poo-poos the boring, business-like, spread-sheet and word processing kind of user, but I want to use my word processing program for writing! That's a creative, artsy endeavor too isn't it?!
iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi Jane,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
Whether you can install from your old disks depends on how old they are—up to 2002 the installer ran in Mac OS 9, which is not supported on the intel based Macs.
An easier way to move AppleWorks from your old iBook to your new iMac is to burn the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the iBook onto a CD, then copy the folder into the applications folder on your iMac.
If the iBook has a Firewire port, you can connect the two machines via firewire then start the iBook in Target mode (hold the T key down until the Firewire icon appears on the display), then simply copy the AppleWorks 6 folder from the iBook (which will appear on the iMac as a Firewire connected external drive) to the Applications folder on the iMac.
The AppleWorks User licence permits the application to exit on only one computer at a time, so to stay within the terms of the licence you'll need to remove AW from the iBook.
Regards,
Barry

  • Installing AppleWorks on Intel Mac

I am about to buy a MacBook. As a teacher with older Macs in my classroom, I still use AppleWorks. However, as I recall the disk I use to install AppleWorks is an OS 9 program that I then update using the 6.2.9 updater to run under OS X. Since the Intel Macs don't support Classic, is there a way I will be able to install AppleWorks?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
Whether or not the installer you have will run in OS X depends on when it was made. The installers for AppleWorks 6.2 or higher, after mid-2001 or so, are OS X installers. Otherwise, copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the Applications folder from an older Mac to the Intel Mac. Burning it to a CD will give you a backup should you ever need to reinstall. Do not copy over any preferences (except the Button Bar preferences if you have customized the Button Bar) or the AppleWorks User Data folder. To keep within the Apple end user license, remove AppleWorks from the first Mac.

Clarisworks, you need Appleworks, which will only work with Mac OS X10.6.8 or earlier.  See this tip if you must go newer.  Mac Pros with newer hardware configuration than July 20, 2011 can't use Mac OS X 10.6.8 or earlier without this tip and then it would be Mac OS X Server.  I'm not sure if the new black Mac Pro supports that configuration or not.
iPhoto, there is an iPhoto for all versions of Mac OS X.
iTunes, there is an iTunes for all versions of Mac OS X.  Note with iTunes versions 11 and later, which are needed for syncing with iOS 7 or or later, you will lose coverflow, if you liked that feature.  Sadly you can't run an older version of iTunes from within Mac OS X 10.9 or later.
Sketchup: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/60107 shows the versions that will work with intermediate Mac OS X versions, and this shows the latest version: http://help.sketchup.com/en/article/36208 be sure to click on the operating system you choose to use.
GIF - Viewing GIFs Apple's Preview can do that.  Editing them, I like http://www.lemkesoft.com/ Graphicconverter.
DMG is able to be opened by all versions of Mac OS X.  This are just "disk images" which store programs on a virtual disk that will open when double clicked.    Frequently you'll find the installer of the said program inside.  To find out if the program itself is compatible with 10.7 through 10.9, see http://www.roaringapps.com/
    Otherwise see the resources on:

  • Retreving  old apple IIGS disks on new intel mac

Looking to read old 3.5 floppy prodos 800KB, using the intel mac. Tried the USB Floppy Drive, but it can not read 800. Does anyone in this discussion group have any ideas? Got a couple from another group but still haven't found an answer.
    All Thoughts are Welcome....

Hope you have solved your problem already.
    Otherwise:
1)IF you have a lot of disks-and IIGs-you can transport the files via LocalTalk to an older MAC(up to G3,Ethernet connectivity included).
    All info for that here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=555734&tstart=0
2)Instead of using floppies from that older Mac you may connect this Mac to your Intelbook and use Filesharing to transport all files this way.
You will find all info you need either by visiting the older software/legacy-networking or older hardware forum, or post back.
I own a running IIgs/(IIe also) and used to transport files from there over SE to PC by 800k-floppies from IIgs/IIe.
As Denis Eddy would say: The problem isn't only transport/read but also to translate the contents( say Appleworks GS) to the modern world. If Appleworks is an object, you may try "Peggy" on the search for info.
    Good luck

  • Sheepshaver on Intel Mac

Is anyone using Sheepshaver to run PageMaker on an Intel Mac?

No useful advice about sheepshaver, but if you can find a copy of appleworks 6.2.4 that will run well on intel and should open your clarisworks 4 files without emulation.

  • Running AppleWorks on new Mac Mini

Hi. I recently bought a new Mac Mini, only to learn that AppleWorks didn't ship with it because it has been discontinued. So, I was wondering if there's any way to get AppleWorks to run on Leopard. If there is, how would I go about obtaining a copy of AppleWorks that would work on it?
One more question. I used to use ClarisWorks and liked it a lot. I realize this may be a shot in the dark, but is there any way to find copies of ClarisWorks that would run on the latest operating system (on a Mac Mini) as well? Thanks for any info.
ETA: I do have an older Mac Mini as well from 2005. Would AppleWorks be installable from any of those older disks?
    Message was edited by: mitrailleuse

You won't be able to run any version of ClarisWorks or AppleWorks 5 on an Intel Mac or any Mac running Leopard because you would need Classic & neither Intel Macs or Leopard support Classic.
The AppleWorks included with the G4 Mac mini would be AppleWorks 6.2.9. That could be a problem if you have any ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files you want to open. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 can open these files but 6.2.9 will give an I/O error when you try to open about half of them. The rest will open without problems. There is no predicting which will open & which won't. If you run into this problem, you might consider getting a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.4 which will run very well on your new Mac mini & won't have problems with those files.

  • Appleworks on intel imac?

    Hi,
Has anybody any experience of how Appleworks runs on the intel macs?
I just bought a iMac 1.83 core duo bit although all my documents are Appleworks i don't want to install it if it runs really slow?

Just type the word intel into the search box on this page or go to awug.org, and you'll see it works great.

  • Does iWork '05 works on Intel Mac?

I have a copy of iWork 05 here and was wondering if that would still work on my new Intel Mac?
(For I don't need to upgrade to the latest version, so...)
    Thanks!

Yes, it will work. Just like so many other pre-Intel/universal binary programs, it will run under Rosetta, so may be a bit slower than on a PPC Mac. Then, again, it may not. I run AppleWorks 6 on a MacBook Pro & it is faster under Rosetta than it is on my G5 tower. The iWork '05 applications may do the same.

  • Appleworks & new Intel processor

A salesman at MicroCenter told me that Appleworks doesn't work "right" with the new Intel proc. I am ready to buy a new iMac but I like Appleworks so much more than MS. Is this true? Will I have trouble with Appleworks 6? It's a deal breaker for me.

Welcome to Apple Discussions RED PT
The only reason I can think of as to why that salesman would think AppleWorks "doesn't work right" on an Intel Mac is because it is no longer bundled with the "consumer" Macs. AppleWorks 6 will run & run well through Rosetta on an Intel Mac. Those who have used AppleWorks 6 on Intel Macs find it runs as well, in some cases better, as on a G5 Mac. The editors of the AppleWorks User Group Journal did extensive testing on side-by-side G5 & Intel iMacs. You can download a PDF copy of their results at http://www.awug.org/.

  • AppleWorks Software & Intel based iMacs

Will the new Intel based iMacs have Appleworks installed as part of the included software bundle?
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

I expected AppleWorks to not be able
to run under Rosetta as it is a carbonized OS 8/9
application, not a native, cocoa, OS X app.
I've heard a few of people say this, but it's a misunderstanding. Both Carbon and Cocoa applications will run under Rosetta.
For example, Steve demo'd MS Office and Photoshop running under Rosetta at last year's WWDC and this year's Macworld Expo. Both applications are written with the Carbon API.
I'd expect that AppleWorks 6 will run in Rosetta, although it's possible it might not. Here's what Apple's guidelines about Rosetta say, and why I'm positive about AppleWorks under Rosetta/Intel Macs:
"Rosetta is a translation process that runs a PowerPC binary on an Intel-based Macintosh... . Many, but not all, applications can run translated... How compatible your application is with Rosetta depends on the type of application it is. An application such as a word processor that has a lot of user interaction and low computational needs is quite compatible...
Rosetta does not run the following:
Applications built for any version of the Mac OS earlier than Mac OS X —that means Mac OS 9, Mac OS 8, Mac OS 7, and so forth
    The Classic environment
Screensavers written for the PowerPC architecture
Code that inserts preferences in the System Preferences pane
Applications that require a G5 processor
Applications that depend on one or more PowerPC-only kernel extensions
    Kernel extensions
    Java applications with JNI libraries
Java applets in applications that Rosetta can translate; that means a web browser that Rosetta can run translated will not be able to load Java applets.
    <http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/universalbinary/universal_binary_exec_a/chapter_7_section_2.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40002217-CH210-BCICICJH>
AppleWorks is not described by any of the items on the list above, so chances are good it'll work with Rosetta. And given the speed of the Intel Macs it should perform well.
    Cheers.

  • Intel Mac Mini stuck in reboot loop

I just upgraded the hard drive in my 2007 intel mac mini core duo. Drive formatted successfully, contains GUID Partition Table.
    OSX 10.5 installed successfully.
Machine rebooted, I ran software update to 10.5.7 successfully.
Upon installing Adobe Flash Player, Adobe Acrobat Reader, machine began to react slowly to commands.
Rebooted machine, went to Grey Apple Screen with spinning dash wheen icon.
Machine rebooted itself, once again going to the grey apply screen with the spinning wheel.
After about 15 minutes of letting the continual reboot cycle happen, I inserted the installation DVD for 10.5, held the power button in to power off the machine, and booted from the disk.
I ran disk utility. Disk Utility shows the hard drive, shows the partition (GUID Partition) correctly.
I Verified Disk, which verified as "OK"
    Repaired permissions.
    Restarted machine.
Once again, it loaded to the grey apple screen, stayed there with the spinning dash wheel for about 3 minutes then continued to reboot over and over (everytime it reboots it sticks on the grey apple screen for 3 minutes before rebooting.
I once again powered off the machine and reset the PRAM.
Machine stuck again on reboot cycle.
I powered off the machine and reset the mini's SMC.
Machine is still stuck in reboot cycle.
I have also taken the mini back apart and verified that all RAM and connections are seated properly.
Any advice on what to do at this point will be very helpful.

+And I promise I will not download and install a hundred different programs this time.+
    Good idea.
Any time you install software in OSX, there is a small, but finite, chance that the installation process won't be able to access a needed file because it is in use. This can mess up pre-binding, or even prevent files from being updated.
So the best advice is not to run any other programs while doing software installs or updates. And when in doubt, run DiskUtility afterwards and fix permissions one more time.
I cringe whenever I think of a post I read a while back about a Mac user who boasted about what music he likes to run in iTunes while doing system software updates. Not a good idea. It's "Russian roulette" with maybe 99 blanks in the "gun", but one real bullet that can kill your Mac's installation.

  • Installation problems on Intel Mac. claims PPC

I'm trying to install the current Flash Player 10.2 on my Macbook 6,1 (Intel Core 2 Duo, 2.26GHz) with 4GB RAM, running OSX 10.6.6
    Browser is Firefox 3.6.13 {Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10.6; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 Firefox/3.6.13}
I got the installer from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
The installer puts up a message: "Devices with PowerPC processors are no longer supported"
How can I convince the installer that this isn't a PPC machine ?  Why might the installer think so ?

Hi, What browser are you using to try to Uninstall/Install FP vs 10.2? And when you Install 10.1, what browser are you using?
There is no Flash Player support for a 64bit browser. I have been very busy on the Forum and have not had time to check on the 10.3 beta. Not sure what it refers to. Have you? Just asking as I've seen it mentioned on another thread, but it's from those complaining about 10.2 not working. Why anyone would want a beta Installed unless they are involved in the testing and are Developers I don't know.
Any beta is a work in progress, so as long as a user is aware of that it's ok with me. Microsoft has their IE9 in beta too, but with an beta one can expect problems.
Since the 10.2 is not Installing, then I don't think you'd receive any code, do you?
I'm not as familiar with the Mac, but is it possible to upgrade the OS from a PPC to the edition you have now?
I'm going to check a couple of things while you let me know on the above browser info. Also any comments would be welcome:-)
    Thanks,

  • Bluetooth Not Available on Intel Mac mini

I keep losing the Bluetooth wireless connection between my Apple wireless mouse and keyboard and my Intel Mac mini (which is running Mac OSX 10.5.5)
Tried re-booting but it doesn't always come back.
Looked in System Preferences, but if the connection is lost, Bluetooth has disappeared as if not installed. If the connection is present then all seems OK. You can check battery levels etc.
Left to itself Bluetooth can re-appear sometime later as mysteriously as it disappeared, maybe after half an hour or so. Very annoying as I have to result to using an Apple USB mouse and keyboard when the connection is lost.
Tried running Bluetooth Updater but it says I haven't got Bluetooth if the connection is lost! But it came pre-installed on purchase. Problem only seems to have started since upgrading to Leopard. Never had this problem with Tiger.
Any thoughts would be most welcome.
    regards,
    BJ

Ok, I've resolved this on my machine, at least for the time being.
Here is what I did. I am not advising anyone else to do this and I am in-no-way stating this will fix your problem. I'm just relaying what worked for me. If anyone chooses to try this then it's on their own head!
I opened my Mac Mini and located the Bluetooth circuit board just in front of the rear power button. I removed the small phillips screw holding the board in place and noticed that the connector that connects the board to the main motherboard was not seated well. I removed the connector and reattached it, making sure I felt the 'click' as the connector was pushed home.
I had also read on the net that the routing of the bluetooth ariel cable may cause problems due to interference from the USB ports. I took the opportunity to extract the ariel and run it over the disk and away from the USB ports. Before putting the lid back on I booted up to check Bluetooth was working again.
So, I now have my Mac Mini with Bluetooth working again. We shall see how long this lasts - perhaps the root cause was a loose connection, in which case it may be fixed permanently now. I shall report back in a few weeks.
Be aware that opening your Mac is going to invalidate any warranty. Mine was out of warranty anyway so I was not bothered. I've also got a degree in software and electronic engineering so know my way round the insides of computers. Please make your own assessment of your level of expertise before deciding to try what I did. It may not work for you anyway!

  • Text-wrap problem ID CS3 on Intel Mac

I've recently been upgraded to an Intel Mac workstation running Leopard and for the most part, the transition has been smooth.  However, I just noticed today that I cannot get "detect edges" to work on a text wrap around an object with a transparent background in a placed Photoshop file.  The detect edges only works if I have a white background.  I've never had this problem before, so I wonder if it's a result of my new computer.  I use this function of text wrap constantly, and I'm hoping someone knows if this is a known bug and if there is a work around.

You don´t have to use detect edges feature for extracted PSD-image.... just select a proper Contour Options Type, Alpha Channel for instance.

  • I have OSX 10.5.7 on my Intel Mac. When I try to login using the correct password the screen goes white and just returns back to the login screen. It does not jiggle like when you enter the wrong password.

I have had a number of issues with my Intel Mac recently and had to reboot using disk utilities, safe mode, OSX recovery, but always come back to the login screen but when I type my password the screen goes white and returns to the login screen. My password is correct and the login does not jiggle as it would if the password was wrong. Please advise,

Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. There are ways to back up, even if you can’t log in. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore everything to the state it’s in now. If you’re not sure you can do that, STOP.
The procedure below may spare you the need for a clean reinstallation of OS X. If you don't feel comfortable carrying it out, don't. try.
Briefly, you need to delete the following file:
    /var/audit/current
If you already know how to do that, you can skip the rest of this message. Do it, and try again to log in.
Boot in single-user mode by holding down the key combination command-S at the startup chime. If you’re using an external USB keyboard, it must be plugged directly into a built-in port on the Mac, not into a hub. Release the keys when you see a black screen with scrolling white text. In this mode, there’s no graphical interface; just a command line. Initially, you can’t make any changes to files.
When the text stops scrolling, and you see a line ending in a pound sign (“#”), type the following command:
    mount -uw /
You must type the command exactly as given, with no mistakes. If you don’t feel able to do that, STOP. At this stage, no harm will be done if you make a mistake, but later, it will be. Press the return key.
    Next, type the following command:
    rm -i /var/audit/current
Press return. You should get the following output:
    remove /var/audit/current?
If that's not what you get, STOP. Type the single letter N, press return, and try again. Otherwise, type the single letter Y and pressreturn.
    Finally, enter the command:
    exit
Press return. The text will start scrolling again, and then the system will reboot. Try again to log in.
