Appleworks on my imac

Hi, I have just replaced my old dalmation G3 imac with the latest 24 inch G5 imac. I went to type a letter, and.... no appleworks!!! Where is it? From memory my G3 came with it installed. I checked the install disk and the closest I could find was a 30 day trial of Office for Mac. But I cant print with it. Do I have to buy appleworks seperately? Is there any other way I can type a letter with what came with my imac?
cheers & beers

Hi, I do not know if this is "proper" to ask a question here, I want to "write" using a word processor on my desktop and or laptop. I have a hp laptop with microsoft works. I have a new iMac (learning my way around) I purchased Apple Works 6. I wrote a note (in works) on the Mac and emailed it and visa versa with the laptop using microsft works and then tried to read them with the other computer. My HP laptop did open the apple works, but it made no sense. My Mac would not open the text form the laptop, "no application to open with" or something like that, I tried using works, the trial word processor in iWorks- would'nt open. Am I going to have to by a MacBook to work back and forth?? Then I thought I could use my Apple Works 6 on both computers since it is only myself, but I just read your note. That would not be possible?? What is the best course? Thank You!!

  • Upgrade of Appleworks to New IMac

Does any know if Apple offers any discount or incentive if you want to upgraqde Appleworks from an older IMac to the new Intel IMac?
    Thanks,

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, WMombert!
What do you mean by Upgrade? You older iMac is likely to be running the most current version of AW aready. That version will run fine on your new iMac. Apple didn't (and almost certainly won't) upgrade AW for intel macs. Just remember to erase AW off you older iMac if you install it on the new one. You are only licensed for one machine at a time.

  • Installing Appleworks on new iMac

I just replaced my iMac G5 (running Tiger) with a new Intel-based iMac (also running Tiger). The G5 came with Appleworks bundled; the new one did not. I'm reasonably sure that it is legal for me to install Appleworks on the new iMac (as long as I remove it from the old one); I just don't know how. It won't allow me to install from the install/restore CDs that came with the G5. Can I just copy the Appleworks (US English) folder to the Applications folder on the new machine?

    Hi
You should be able to do just that, yes, using firewire. Try just dragging & dropping from 1 computer to the other, if that fails:
    Shut down both computers
Connect computers using 6-pin to 6-pin firewire cable.
    Boot up Intel iMac normally.
Boot up G5 holding down T until firewire symbol appears on screen.
    Navigate to HD/Applications on Intel.
    Navigate to HD/Applications on G5.
    Put windows side-by-side.
Drag & drop Appleworks folder into Intel's Applications folder.
    Eject G5's disk icon & shutdown G5.
    Shut down Intel.
    Disconnect wire.
One more thing, make sure it's Appleworks 6.2.4 or above.

  • Appleworks on intel imac?

    Hi,
Has anybody any experience of how Appleworks runs on the intel macs?
I just bought a iMac 1.83 core duo bit although all my documents are Appleworks i don't want to install it if it runs really slow?

Just type the word intel into the search box on this page or go to awug.org, and you'll see it works great.

  • Finder and Appleworks documents

I have a friend who had a great many files in Appleworks. We were able to install Appleworks on her imac with Leopard, and she has been gradually moving them into .doc format (copying the Appleworks file contents, pasting it into a clean Neooffice doc and then saving the Neoffice doc.) She saves them into the same folder that the Appleworks docs lived (with no extension).
What is weird is that the Appleworks documents appear to come and go almost at random. One time you can't see them in the folder where you know they were, the next time you CAN. You can find them with Spotlight. I've done the disk cleanup and reset permissions, etc, run Onyx on it. Still happens after multiple restarts and on multiple documents. It SEEMS to be just limited to Appleworks documents, which seem to appear and disappear.
We can live with this - she's about done with her copying at this point - but it IS a behavior I've not seen before. Has anyone else seen this? Does it portend something more ominous than just an old program not being properly recognized?

    This contains the following topics....
    AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?
These symptoms are usually caused by a full Recent Items folder, or less commonly, a full Auto Save folder. Follow these steps to empty the Recent Items folder or Auto Save folder.
    1. Quit AppleWorks.
    2. Delete the contents of AutoSave and Recent Items (Folders)
    ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/Starting Points/Recent Items
    ~/Documents/AppleWorks User Data/AutoSave
    3. I t was also reported that deleting the following also solved a problem...
    ~/Library/Preferences/.GlobalPreferences.plist
    4. If you do not use either the Recent Items or Auto Save (aka Auto Recovery) features of AppleWorks you can disable them from the AppleWorks Preferences.
THEN... if AppleWorks still will not launch:
    1. Open your Applications folder, and then the AppleWorks folder. You should see the AppleWorks icon and several "supporting folders" (AppleWorks Essentials, AppleWorks Extras, Starting Points, etc.)
    2. Control + Click on the AppleWorks icon and select "Show Package Contents"
    3. Double-click to open the Contents folder. Here's where the problem is.
4 You should see 3 folders and files. The folders should be named MacOS, MacOSClassic and Resources. In all the incidents I've seen, the "MacOS" folder has somehow been renamed with some long obscure cache-like number. Rename this folder MacOS (be sure to type it exactly like this, no space)
    5. Close the Contents folder and Package folder and try to launch Appleworks.
    6. Smile!
If this does not work for you, (there was one incident that the above fix did not for me), highlight the MacOS folder and duplicate it. Toss the original and rename the copy to Mac OS. For some reason the copy worked.

  • Can't open AppleWorks files

We just bought a new iMac with iWork. My husband started transferring his old files to it, but he can't open them. What do we need to convert .cwk files to iWork files?

Is there a way to copy AppleWorks from the iMac G5 to the new computer? Then he can just keep using the old databases.
You can copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from the old Mac to the new one, placing it in the Applications folder. Make sure you include all of the support folders as well. If you have customized the Button Bar I would move that preference file to the new Mac. It's located in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences > AppleWorks. Do not move any of the other preferences. I suggest burning the AppleWorks 6 folder & the Button Bar preferences to a CD so that you will have a backup copy should you ever need to reinstall again. To remain within the Apple software license, you need to remove the copy from the old Mac.
Also, is there a way to remove the .cwk universally, rather than one file at a time?
The user tip I linked to above can explain how to have AppleScript change whole folders of file names. I wouldn't remove the .cwk extension, though. It's better to have it than not.

  • Converting Appleworks 6.7 to Microsoft Word

I am running Appleworks on my iMac with OS 10.4.11. I am trying to transfer files to my MacBook Pro with OS 10.6.4 and using Microsoft Word. Is there any way to convert these Appleworks documents to Word?

AppleWorks 6.2.9 on my Mac offers these file format options (for word processing documents) in the popup menu at the lower left of the Save As dialogue:
The Word translators come from DataViz, and were supplied with some versions of AppleWorks 6.

  • Does Appleworks install on OS 10.6.7

I just upgraded from an 24" imac with 10.5.8 to a 27" imac with 10.6.7.  I tried to install Applworks but failed due to the message 'You can't open the application install-US/Canada because the Classic enviroment is no longer supported'.
It ran fine on the 24". Now I can't even install it.
    What do I do?

You can't install it directly from the disk you have because the installer (not AppleWorks) is a Mac OS 9 and earlier application, and requires the Classic environment to run OS 9.
But you can transfer AppleWorks from the iMac running OS X v10.5 to the new iMac quite easily.
Burn a copy of the entire AppleWorks 6 folder (and its contents), found in the Applications folder on the older machine onto a CD. Don't include any supporting files created by AppleWorks outside the AppleWorks 6 folder; these will be recreated as the application needs them. Put the CD into the new machine and drag the AW 6 folder to the Applications folder on that machine. Store the CD in a safe place in case you have to reinstall at a later date.
To stay within the terms of the AppleWorks User License you should then remove AppleWorks from the old iMac.

  • Problems with Appleworks

Have noticed recently that I find it very hard to open appleworks on my IMac. It takes ages, and once I open up a database or WP file, all I get is a multicoloured version of that little spinning wheel. Any thoughts? I've tried to re-install the original disk and there is no improvement.. Is it something to do with memory?

    Hello
Nothing to do with memory but with the "Recent Items" folder.

  • Appleworks from Classic to X ???

    Hello,
I've just got a Macbook Pro Leopard, how can I transfer my Appleworks 5.04 application documents from my iMac 9.2.2 desktop to my Macbook Pro?
I have already tried using Firewire, External Harddrive (non-bootable),OS9 Install CD, iMac System Install CD. But the Macbook Pro gives me a message about no longer in the Classic Envirement.
I was informed in the Apple Store that I would be able to transfer & use
the Appleworks from my iMac on this Macbook Pro.
    Thank You.

Does that mean that I will be unable to transfer my current Appleworks documents to the Macbook Pro?
Yes, unless you have AppleWorks 6 or newer. Some documents can be saved into a different format from AppleWorks 5.
Is there anyway that I can install Classic - 9.2.2 onto the Macbook Pro and then switch back and forth between Leopard & Classic, thereby having access to my current Appleworks documents on the laptop?
Try SheepShaver if you have a compatible Mac OS 9 version.

  • Appleworks now crashes on opening "recent items"

Tonight I updated some documents in Appleworks on my iMac and then transferred the completed
files from the iMac to my MacBook Pro. All went well till I tried to open them in my MBP only to find
it crashes every time. The report says it was a
    "Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGSEGV)
    Exception Codes: KERNINVALIDADDRESS at 0x0000000015ef9000
    Crashed Thread: 0"
All the reports are the same.
Following the suggestions previously listed I have tried to delete the preferences
(h/d/users/username/library/preferences/Appleworks) but cannot find the file
    com.apple.appleworks.plist in (~/library/preferences)
I have triedto restore using time machine but problem still exists.
I have also deleted all the files relating to Appleworks that I can find and then re-installed them
from my iMac where the application works well.
Interestingly, I can find the com.apple.appleworks.plist on my iMac but not on the Macbook Pro !!!
I have also attempted to re-install using both computers with file sharing but still the same old
    problem.
If, I go into appleworks and select a document in starting points, then this document will open.
However, when I select Appleworks 6. app and get the starting- points popup, as soon as I select
    "recent items" it then crashes.
Can any one please help in this case ?
    Alan

There is one point I would like more info on - why don't I have in my h/d/users/username/library/preferences the file "com.apple.appleworks.plist" Its there in my iMac but is not to be found on my MBP.
If you've never launched AppleWorks on the MBP the .plist wouldn't be there. Neither would the AppleWorks folder in preferences. It's possible that if you've launched it but didn't alter any preferences or open any files, it could also be "missing."

  • Appleworks "unexpectedly quit" cannot relaunch

I have been using an older version of Appleworks on my iMac for a few years. 2 days ago it uexpectedly quit for good. Clicking the relaunch doen't work as it keeps showing the same relaunch, report or ignore window. I have sensitive spreadsheet files I've been using daily & I've tried opening them with "Numbers" but it doesn't allow me to open them because they are password protected. In other words, I need to get Appleworks to work.
I've deleted all (I think) all Appleworks (Application not Data) files & re-copied files from my laptop but it hasn't worked as I get the same Ignore, Report or Relaunch window. I've also tried downloading from various sites but I keep finding an "updater" instead of the actual program. Any ideas would be appreciate it.

    Hi Ben,
Before going on, here's one more test to do: Try opening AppleWorks in a different user account. If you have ony one user registered on your machine, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts, and add a second account. When it is added, close the preferences pane, go to the Apple menu and choose Log out. Wait for the Log in window, choose the new account, log in, then try to launch AppleWorks. If successful, it indicates the application is OK, and that the problem is in your regular account, and probably in one of the 'missing' files.
The current behaviour does pique my curiosity (not the simultaneous failure of another application so much—could be coincidence, or common cause. And I am throwing up one hand...to scratch my head.
"AppleWorks 6" covers a number of AW versions. Although the six is useful, the rest of the digits are also significnt. With AppleWorks running, you can find the full version number in About AppleWorks, the first item in the AppleWorks menu. If it won't stay open long enough to look there, locate the application in your Applications folder, click once to select it, and press command-I ('eye', not 'one') to Get Info. You'll find the full version number in the first section of the Info window.
"I have therefore downloaded the whole thing from my backup site onto a new folder & tried launching from finder window.....same result. A "Appleworks Unexpectedly Quit" window pops up with a suggestion button (blue) that says Reopen & clicking it doesn't work. The other option on this window is an OK button (white) which makes it disappear when clicked."
    What is "the whole thing"?
If you are installing a copy of an existing (and working) copy, all that should be moved is the (closed) AppleWorks 6 folder found in the Application folder on the machine where it is working. AppleWorks builds the rest of the files mentioned as it needs tham.
Before starting the move, Quit AppleWorks on both machines, and delete the files in my earlier post (and in Peggy's list) from the Snow Leopard machine. The Cache and Preferences files should be in a folder named AppleWorks, and that folder should be in your Preferences folder, inside your (user) Library folder.
If the folder and files still can't be found, try adding a new folder to the Preferences folder, and naming it "AppleWorks" (exactly as shown, but without the quotation marks). If you get an alert message that "The folder AppleWorks already exists," then there is an AppleWorks folder in that folder, and it should contain the 'missing' files. If you do nt get that alert, youhave successfully added a folder named ApleWorks to the folder you are in.
Click on the "Name: bar at the top of the list to sort the lit by name, then scroll to the new AppleWorks folder.
What are the names of the folder or file) immediately above it and the one immediately below it?
Once you have determined that the plist file and the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences have been removed, and that the AppleWorks 6 folder has been removed from your Applications folder, you are ready to copy the AppleWorks 6 folder from Applications on the other machine to the Applications folder on your Snow Leopard machine.
If you have a direct connection between the machines, Drag the AW 6 folder from the source machine to the Applications folder on the target machine and wait for it to copy.
If you do not have a direct connection between the two machines, copy the folder onto a thumb drive, then copy it from the thumb drive to the Applications folder on your Snow Leopard machine.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Transferring everything from old imac G3 to new mac

I don't know much about computers, so sorry if this is a stupid question... I have an old imac G3 which I bought new in 1999 or 2000. It is system 9. I don't use it anymore and it's not hooked up to the internet. I do have a lot of important pictures and documents on it. I'm planning on buying a new mac one of these days (don't know exactly which model yet but probably a laptop) and I want to know if all my old documents and files will be able to go straight onto any new mac with the latest OS. My documents are in microsoft word, whatever version of it was around 7 years ago. I have an external disk drive for my imac which plugs in with a USB port. My files are backed up on disks with this disk drive and I guess this would be how I transfer the files to a new computer. Would an external disk drive with old software for system 9 also work on a new system? Basically my question is, does any old software or application for system 9 also work on system 10?

In addition to the examples that Eustace provided, I recently found that AppleWorks v6 that was bundled with many iMacs will also run under OSX. My daughter had immediate need of a computer and no money to buy a new one. I upgraded our unused old iMac 400DV to Panther and added a larger hard drive. As I had no additional licenses for Office and my daughter needed a WP program, I restored AppleWorks from the iMac restore CD to the OS9 partition I made on the new drive.
When I launched AppleWorks, it opened in X, not "Classic." It had a few problems but it basically worked That version was 6.0.4 and the update to v6.2.9 available here cleared up all the little problems.
Upgrading an office computer to one that ran OSX showed me that any MS Office document created with Office 98 (OS9) would open just fine with Office 2004 (OSX). When you save the document it automatically converts it to the later version unless you tell it not to.

  • What to do with Appleworks documents

I just bought a new iMac, only to discover that appleworks no longer exists. I do have appleworks on an iMac X 10.4, bought last year. Can I safely transfer that program to my new computer?
Thanks for any help you can give.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
A quick search in this forum will find multiple posts, a lot by me, that verify that AppleWorks 6.2.4 or 6.2.9 work very well on the newest Macs with the newest OS.
Copy the whole AppleWorks 6 folder from Applications to a CD as well as the Button Bar Preferences in HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences > AppleWorks if you have customized the Button Bar. Then copy these to the same locations on the new Mac. You will also then have the CD as a back up should you ever need it. To keep within the user license, you will need to remove the copy of AppleWorks from the old Mac.
