Appleworks on Snow Leopard Dialog boxes

Several of the Appleworks dialog boxes don't appear to work when I transferred it over from a 10.5 system to a new powerbook pro. The dialog boxes don't show any content, and I can't type any content or check the checkboxes. I've noticed this with the Font/Size/Other and spreadsheet Options/Display dialogs, but it may be elsewhere too.

If you used the Setup or Migration Assistant to do the move it would have also moved the preferences from your user Library. The same suggestions for any update also apply to migrating. Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder then click on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.
Still, as OS X is updated/upgraded there is more & more "flakiness" & glitches with AppleWorks. I would not be at all surprised that the next major (10.7) upgrade will render AppleWorks unusable.

  • How do I set default to Pages instead of Appleworks in Snow Leopard?

How do I change default from Appleworks to Pages in Snow Leopard?

Section starts are a page property.
If you don't want the text to misalign when you edit, break your text into individual stories for each section. Editing will then cause either an overset at the end of the section/story (in which case you can add a page or pages, or it will shrink away from the end of the last page leaving blank space. In Either case, your section starts will remain on the page where they are supposed to be.

When I try to open an Appleworks document or try to open Appleworks itself, I get a dialog box stating: "Appleworks 6 Quit Unexpectedly". I have Appleworks 6.2.9 and my OS is 10.6.8. Any suggestions?
    Many thanks

There was a security update through Software Update a couple of months ago for 10.6.8 that caused this kind of problem for PPC applications. Apple issued a revised update a couple of days later. So my first suggestion is to run Software Update to make sure you have the updated update. You can also manually download the updater at this link.
Whenever AppleWorks quits unexpectedly or you force quit it, there will be some corruption of its preferences.

  • Appleworks with Snow Leopard

I still use Appleworks for my business database. Will it work with Snow Leopard?

According to several Snow Leopard comatibility tracking sites, yes it will work. Appleworks launched just fine on my iMac running Snow Leopard. I have not used it in depth to see if everythng is okay but it appears to be fine.

  • Upgrading Tiger 10.4.11 to Snow Leopard

I have Tiger 10.4.11 on my 06' Mac Mini and tried to upgrade to the Snow Leopard Mac Box Set I bought but the disc would not install successfully. Any hints?

Your hardware probably doesn't meet the minimum system requirements for 10.6.
10.5 should work fine on it though.

  • Can't UInstal Snow Leopard over Tiger

Hello, I need some help installing Snow Leopard on my MacBook. I have Tiger installed 10.4.11 and have been having a lot of problems with it recently. The Apple store advised I buy the Snow Leopard Mac Box Set which I have done. I have made all the backup's on a separate hard drive, but now when I try and do the install it will not work. It runs for about 5 or 10 minutes and then comes up with the message "MAC OSX could not be installed on your computer. The Installer could not copy the necessary support files. Click restart or restart your computer and try installing again". I have tried installing twice now with no luck, both times the same error. I have a total hard drive of 148.73GB and I have 64.41GB free.
Does any one have any ideas to help me
    Thankyou very much.

Launch Disk Utility & select your MB's hard drive from the list. In the bottom of the window you will see the *Partition Map Scheme* listed. Does it say "GUID Partition Table"? If not, you will have to reformat the drive for the installer to work.
Also make sure your MB can connect to the Internet during the early stages of the install process. If you use the default 'upgrade in place' method (which I recommend), the pre-install app will try to download certain updated info from Apple's servers & store that in the files it writes to the hard drive before the restart from the DVD that actually upgrades the OS.

  • Upgrade to Snow Leopard Cost Question

Running Tiger on 2 macs , Mac Pro and Macbook all intels which is better to upgrade,
osx snow leopard family box set for $229
    or
osx leopard box set for $117 then upgrade each for $29 each (all would be $175)
am I missing the obvious, with the cheaper route, what would I be missing? except the the $54 bucks

It looks like the official upgrade route from Tiger to Snow Leopard is through the Mac Box Set. This includes iLife 09 and iWork 09.
However, I don't want iLife or iWork. I just want Snow Leopard. The cheapest route I can find is to buy Leopard and Snow Leopard. But that just seems silly so I might leave the mac at Tiger.

  • Install Snow Leopard without Leopard

I have a MacBook, which was running Leopard.
It got corrupted, and even I want to upgrade to Snow Leopard. So I purchased Snow Leopard Retail Box.
Now, I want to install Snow Leopard, but I cannot start Leopard. How can I perform clean install of Snow Leopard, without needing Leopard.
    Videos Links are welcomed too.

Do you have the $29 Snow Leopard DVD or the $169 Boxed Set? If the former then do this:
    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the "C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.  After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
When the installation has completed your computer will require a restart after which you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

  • Installing Replacement Snow Leopard DVD

    Hi,
Last week I decided to erase the disk and reinstall OS X on my iMac7,1.
Everything went according to plan apart from when I realised I had lost 'Mac OS X Install Disc 1' (grey disc) I believe what was on this disc was the applications such as iLife, GarageBand etc. I used Mac OS X Leopard CPU Drop-In DVD (black disc) to install the operating system and didn't seem to have any problems.
I rang Apple and asked for a replacement disc so I could put the missing applications back on the iMac, and they explained that 10.5 no longer existed and would send me Snow Leopard instead, along with the application disc, great.
I received the replacement discs (both white) today, one labelled 'Mac OS X Snow Leopard Mac Box Set Replacement DVD' the other 'iLife '09 Install DVD Replacement DVD'.
Now, because I wanted to upgrade to Snow Leopard, (then eventually Mavericks like I did with my MacBook) I put the disc in the drive. The drive did not recognise the disc and eventually ejected it. I tried holding 'C' when the iMac starts up, holding 'Cmd + R' and holding the 'alt' key, all not working.
After leaving it a while to look around online at similar issues, I put the disc in and it recognised it, however when I double clicked 'Install Mac OS X', I got the error
    message:
"Operation can not be completed. (OSProductManagerDomain error 100)"
I repeated the restart procedures with the disc being recognised but it doesn't recognise it apart from on the desktop and now I am at a dead end. I have read online about the disc possibly being from a bad batch and to ask Apple for a replacement.
Has anyone found a solution to this without asking Apple for a new disc? I'm debating copying and burning the 'Mac OS X Snow Leopard Mac Box Set Replacement DVD' onto a blank DVD, but obviously the disc might have missing data.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  • I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialog box so large I can't get to the eject card button.   I have to force quit Aperture.  How do I fix?

I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialogue box so large that I can't see the eject card button.  Consequently, I can't get rid of the dialogue box without having to do a force quit on Aperture.  How do I fix?

I can drag the dialog box, but I can't move it up far enough to get to the eject card button.  The dialogue box contains all the jpeg Numbers I am trying to upload.  It has never done that before.  It used to be just a smal dialogue box with no jpeg numbers in it.
It is even difficult to get to the Finder with the Dialague box is open.  I have to force quit aperture.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks for your reply and sorry for the delayed response - have been away for a few days over the holidays.
I understand your point about backups and disk permissions. I do have a back up copy and will adopt using the 'verify disk' step in future; so, for me the loss shouldn't amount to any more than the time I have spent, as frustrating as that is. However, I think the point I'd like to make is that doing a disk permissions check is fine for those like me [or others on this forum] since I work in a hi-tech industry, and have worked in a Unix/Linux environment for the last ~20 years so understand about permissions etc. , but I know people with Macs for whom the key advantage is that the they largely 'manage themselves' seamlessly. So, if the verify step is simply a pushbutton check-then-repair step and omitting it can lead to such fatal errors, then why can't it be built into the update script as the first automatic step ? What I mean is; my computer reached this unusable state simply by pressing 'ok' on a planned update, so to the average-Joe user it looks like a 'stop and catch fire mode'.
For info: I have now used Disk Warrior, which is reporting a disk malfunction, but can recover the user data. It seems to be a remarkable coincidence though, because there were no system problems exhibited before the update.

  • Snow Leopard sidebar width in open/save dialog boxes

I think I found the answer to the infuriating non adjustable sidebar width in the open/save dialog box.
It requires finding the plist of every program you want to change (I know... annoying)
Close the application if open. Open the plist in Property List Editor (which is the default anyway so just double click) and delete any line which begins NSNavPanelExpanded...
Reopen the application and the sidebar now mirrors the settings in Finder (where the sidebar stays adjusted if you alt+click drag it).
I haven't restarted yet so don't know if it will stick but I don't see why it shouldn't, and I don't know if it will reflect further finder changes to the sidebar width.

In the case of Photoshop it looks like NSNavBrowserPreferedColumnContentWidth also needs to be deleted, or a new value entered.
So it might be different for different programs

  • Problems with AppleWorks drawing docs under Snow Leopard

Since I installed Snow Leopard, I've encountered two major problems:
(Problem 1) AppleWorks gets corrupted when dragging a picture file (.jpg or .png) from the desktop into a drawing document. Various dialogs (e.g. "Format : Document..." or "Format : Ruler : Settings ..." or "Options : Object Size ...") become uneditable. These dialogs will display blank boxes instead of the given object settings, and nothing can be entered into these boxes. AppleWorks must be shut down and restarted in order to continue work.
(Problem 2) When a formula (i.e. an equation) has been created in a MathType window, selected and copied, it takes ages to make AppleWorks the active application (spinning rainbow coloured ball appears and keeps spinning for a long while). Thereafter, it takes another century to get the formula appearing in the AppleWorks document when selecting the command "Edit : Paste".
Everything worked still fine under Leopard; under Snow Leopard it's a desaster.
    p.s.
I've produced thousands of work sheets for my Maths teachings using the Drawing module of AppleWorks in combination with MathType (Design Science). Now I'm stuck since there is no decent successor of AppleWorks available:
    * iWork doesn't feature a drawing module.
    * EazyDraw doesn't collaborate with MathType (i.e. no OLE; inserted formulae cannot be edited by double-clicking).
    * OpenOffice doesn't collaborate with MathType.
    * Micro$oft Office doesn't feature a drawing module.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't use AppleWorks as much as I used to & I've never had a need to use MathType, but I just tried dragging 3 images - a .png, a .tiff & a .jpg - to a new AppleWorks draw document. I had no problems resizing them using Format > Scale by percent & I had no problems using any of the other dialog boxes you mention.
Some basic troubleshooting you might try:
Whenever you do an update, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
You should do this step anytime AppleWorks crashes or you force quit it.
The slowness is likely the "Recent Items bug" & it has been around since AppleWorks 6 was released in March, 2000. It can make it appear that AppleWorks has frozen or failed to launch. The user tip by Dale Gillard, AppleWorks slow? Spinning ball appears?, explains a lot.
Could you send me a copy of one of these worksheets? Perhaps I can see if I can easily duplicate one in Pages/Numbers/Keynote. Even though iWork doesn't have a draw app, all of the apps do have basic drawing capabilities.

Word Processing documents can be opened directly in Pages 4 (AppleWorks 6 only) but this is no longer available from Apple - the new Pages 5 (Mavericks required) does not open AppleWorks documents. (The older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.) Panergy Software's docXConverter v3.2 ($19.95) can convert Appleworks 5 and 6 Word Processing documents to RTF (though it has been reported that it can only handle documents which contain only text, not those which include images or frames). The latest version of the free LibreOffice has announced that it can open AppleWorks 6 Word Processing documents and an ability to open ClarisWorks documents has been reported: it does appear to be able to handle at least some embedded images.
Draw Documents can be opened directly only in EazyDraw (the more expensive version from their website, not the cheaper one from the Mac App Store, and you will need v4.0 'Retro' not the most recent version) or Intaglio (though this appears not to be able to handle very complex drawings). LibreOffice will open simple Draw documents but I found it very unreliable with complex ones.
Spreadsheets can be opened directly only in the older versions of  Numbers - the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available from Apple. (Again, the older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.)
Presentations can be opened directly only in the older versions Keynote; again, the new version for Mavericks will not do this. The old version is no longer available from Apple. (The older version is contained in the iWork '09 box set which may still be available from Amazon and other independent retailers.)
Nothing will open Database documents. You would need to export the data as ASCII and import it into another database program; you will lose your formatting and calculations will come over as the result, not the calculation.
