AppleWorks opens slowly

I am troubleshooting a friend's iMac Bondi Blue. He uses AppleWorks and Photoshop 7 for pro photography, and cannot launch AppleWorks. I have taken the following steps to try to troubleshoot the problem:
Deleted the com.apple.AppleWorks.plist file
Updated to Mac OS X 10.2.8
Updated to AppleWorks 6.9.2
Reinstalled AppleWorks with a retail CD
But to no effect. The Bondi meets the minimum system requirements, and no changes were made to the system before it stopped working. I have eliminated user error and software error, and am now focusing on OS error. I do not want to have to upgrade the OS to Tiger, but need be I shall. Should my next attempt (archive and install) fail, I should want a backup plan. Any suggestions?

OK
it seems that I understood wrong.
In fact I understood that you didn't encounter problem before the last three years.
Just remember that english is not my first language
For me recent items is not a problem, a script of mine trash every "recent item alias" just when it is created.

  • Print options open slowly when choosing "printer" icon or using CTRL+P.

This has been an ongoing problem where I work. Basically we view Purchase orders through Acrobat Pro or Reader and print them to wherever they may need to go. The Problem we have, on only certain computers, is that the print options screen is very slow to open (sometimes takes about 10 seconds to show up). On other computers; it works immediatly upon clicking the printer icon or CTRL+P. This problem is slowly progressing on almost all of our computers, once it opens slowly the first time. It is never fixed. Our I.T. department has been looking into it for a long time. They have tried everything I can imagine and more to fix this. Any ideas as to what causes this or how it can be fixed? I am asking personally because it slows down my production majorly and we have a certain quota to reach. Any advise it appreciated. Thank you.

This is probably obvious but you didn't say.  Is this only happening on PDFs, or does it also happen out of other programs?  Large or small or does it matter?  And is it always the same PDFs?

  • Office Files Opening Slowly Over The Network

We have a Windows Server 2012 Standard hosting files.  When opening only Microsoft Office documents, the files will open really slowly.  We are using a blend of Office 2k7 and 2k13.  Each document when opened shows it being downloaded and
in 30 seconds it will open.  This is happening on computers connected to a GB switch and a standard 10/100 switch.  PDF files that are much larger or image files open immediately.  Browsing is responsive.  Only opening documents either
with office open or by browsing to the file, the document opens slowly.

Glad to see you have your problem resolved. And thanks for sharing the workaround here, this should be helpful to other users who encounter the same problem.

  • My programs are opening slowly, how do I get them to open quicker?

I have a Mac Pro 2 Ghz PowerPC Gr running OS 10.5.8.  I have been having difficulty with programs opening very slowly including Safari and Word which I use most frequently.  I have used ONYX to try to speed things up, have cleared the cache in Safari and it still seems to be slow responding when opening or closing programs.  What can I do to speed things up??  Thanks a lot!

How much free space on the startup disk?
Right or control click your MacintoshHD icon on your Desktop then click: Get Info

  • Why do my applications open slowly?

    Hello,
I have a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.7.5.  The computer is a little over three years old, and I've noticed lately that applications are pretty slow to open. Are there are routine maintenance tasks I should be performing to keep my Mac running smoothly?

    Hello gargoyle09
Check out the articles below, the issue could be related to how much space you have left on your hard drive or if you have to many apps opened at the same time and using up a lot of memory causing other apps to load up slowly.

  • Appleworks Opens Documents as Spreadsheets

I did a quick search of the forum and didn't find anything on this... I hope somebody has a quick solution, because I'm going to bust a big deadline if I can't figure it out.
Appleworks is suddenly opening document files as spreadsheets.
Background: I receive PC Word docs via email, open them in Appleworks (version 6.2.9) and save them as text documents. Everything has gone smoothly until yesterday when Appleworks decided to open all the text files as spreadsheet files.
The documents all have .doc extentions and "get info" reveals they are all "com.apple.appleworks.word" files.
Does anybody know how to get Appleworks to recognize them as documents once again?
    Thanks,
    Marc

Because a .txt file is not an AppleWorks file, but a "foreign" file format that AppleWorks can open, it opens it as untitled or converted in order to preserve the original & not let you accidentally overwrite it.
As for extensions, AppleWorks 6 is an OS 8/9 application released about 6 months before the public beta of OS X. It was carbonized to run in OS X sometime in 2001. Although it runs in OS X, it has never been coded to take advantage of the conventions of OS X. Since it was written when Macs didn't use extensions, this is one thing that doesn't work as we would expect in OS X. AppleWorks & ClarisWorks before it have always used the .cwk extension on the Windows version (of course), but it wasn't until AppleWorks 6 that the Mac version even seemed to acknowledge extensions exist. Setting the Finder preference to show or not show extensions doesn't seem to affect AppleWorks documents. Even though I have my Finder preferences set to always show extensions, my AppleWorks documents don't get the extension added because I have AppleWorks set to not add it. I have AppleWorks set that way because if I were to save an AppleWorks file as Word or Excel or text, AppleWorks won't let me change the extension in the Save dialog.
Again, because AppleWorks 6 was written before OS X & extensions on the Mac, it doesn't know to add them to translated files, you must do it manually.

  • Will Appleworks open up old Claris documents?

I recently upgraded from a B&W G3 to a new iMac G5 iSight. I have a bunch of signs that I had made using ClarisWorks for my business. i.e. Closed Thanksgiving, Holiday Hours, etc. The signs have artwork and text.
If I purchase AppleWorks will I be able to edit and continue to use these signs? I don't have an app on the new iMac that will open them. I have Office:mac on my machine but I just can't get the hang of mixing text and images with it.
    Thanks.

Actually, you do have Appleworks. It's just not installed, because you got all the different language versions and it's up to you to choose which you want. If you look in the bundled software on your iMac discs for "Appleworks Languages" you can choose the one you want to install.
Hopefully you'll be able to open your clarisworks files. Be sure they show the .cwk extension. However, the current version of appleworks (6.2.9) is very inconsistent about when it will open old files and when it won't. If you have problems, post back for the workarounds.

By root, I am referring to the part of your hard drive where the Mac OS is installed.  I am using Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard, and when looking at the finder window, on the left hand side under "Devices" your primary hard drive should be listed (with a picture that looks like a hard drive and a name).   When you single click on this hard drive you should see some files and folders.  This is what I refer to as the "root" directory.   At this point, you should see a folder named "library".  If you open up the library folder you should find another folder named InputManagers.  If you have Inquisitor for Safari installed on my Mac, then when you open up this InputManagers folder, you should find a file or folder named "Inquisitor".  Drag this to the trash and your issues with Safari (as described above) should be fixed.
This has worked for me.  And the new Safari is behaving better regarding launching new windows from the search bar.
    Hope this has helped

  • Why are links opening slowly on my MacBookPro

I use a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011. Safari 8.0 (10600.1.25.1) I have had several different difficulties since upgrading to Yosemite.
Processor: 2.2 GHZ Intel Core l7,
Memory: 10GB 1333 MHz DDR3, (recently removed one of the 2GB modules and replaced it with an 8GB module which bumped me u to 10GB.)
Startup disk: Macintosh HD, Graphics: AMD Radeon HD 670M 1024 MB.
Lately when clicking on a link in email or while web browsing the link either acts dead and won't open at all or
will open very slowly. What is going on? Is this my MacBook Pro or internet ?? Or OS X Yosemit

Go step by step by step and test.
    1. Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.
Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly. It will take a while.
        Restart the computer.
        Start up in Safe Mode.

    2. Delete Caches.db
Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold "option" key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
        Select "Library" from the dropdown.
        Library > Caches > com.apple.Safari > Caches.db
Right click the Caches.db file and select "Move To Trash.
        Close windows and relaunch Safari.
    3. Delete Cookies
Safari > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies and other website data:
        Click “Remove All Website Data”.
    4. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn off Extensions if any and launch Safari again to test.
Turn on those one by one and test.

  • AI opens slowly, then when it finally does open, everything is outlined

Slowly over the past couple of weeks, AI has been getting slower and slower. It finally has decided to open all files like this image and I can't figure out how to view the workspace normally.
Any tips? Should I reinstall? (Running AI CC 2014 on OSX 10.9.4) Thanks!

Oh my gosh. Well now I feel silly. I went through preferences.... view.... Thanks!

  • Appleworks opening failure

AW was locking up when simple WP files were open so I decided to reinstall it. I dragged the old folder to the trash and emptied the trash. Then I reinstalled AW6 again. Repaired permissions and restarted. I also installed the AW update.
Now AW won't open at all. I get the splash screen, then a message that "The file is locked or already in use." When clicking OK (IT's NOT OK!) AW tries to continue to open for a few more seconds then shuts down with the "unexpected close" error box.
I've discarded the appleworks.plist file and repaired permissions and restarted but continue to get the error.
What file is blocking the opening sequence and how do I get it working again?
    TIA

    Dave and Peggy,
Thanks for the suggestions. I replaced the dock icon right after the reinstallation. I've tried opening AW from an AW file (double clicking the file) and from double clicking the application itself (Appleworks 6). Same result.
Peggy, I know about locking files and giving read and write permissions. The problem here is that I cannot tell what file it is that AW is trying to open. When I click on the application icon, it should not be trying to open any file in particular. I've deleted the "recent files" and also the com.appleworks.plist in the preferences folder. I still get the locked file error message.
Here is one hint. I had a file open and got a spinning beach ball while that file was open. It was this problem that caused me to decide to reinstall AW (AW locking up when files were open). I had used the forced quit to stop AW, then deleted AW and the plist and the recent files and reinstalled. It might be that AW is trying to open some ghost of the file that was open the last time it was running. That file is on the hard drive in the same folder and with the same name as it had before, but maybe there is a file out there somewhere that indicates it was open at the time of the lockup/force quit. Maybe THAT ghost file is what I am looking for. Cannot imagine where to look for it though.
Thanks for the help so far ... wish it had worked!

  • PPro opening slowly for insisting projects

I'm having problems with previosuly saved projects opening vry slowly with CS6, I have 12 gigs RAM with a solid state 60gb main drive that hosts the windows 7 OS and data drive and then four drives controlledby a raid controller card. One the project is open everything works well, just takes several minutes for projects to open. Suggestions?

Four Sequences is not very many.
You can check your Project file size by looking at the .prproj file.
Dynamic Linked elements are obviously not the problem (since
you don't know what they are, I doubt you have used them).
What is shown above appears on the bottom left of the interface.
That is an indication of the media files being located and loaded
into the Project.  Note the circled progress '(14 remaining)'.
What you will see on the bottom right will be audio files conforming
(note the yellow bar indicating the progress of a single media file).
Do not interrupt the conforming process, and allow plenty of time
for all files to complete conforming before you try to start editing.
If your Project is re-conforming audio files every time you
open the Project, that may be another problem.

  • InDesign opens slowly/Rosetta?

I have recently upgraded computer hardware and software (Mac Pro 2.8 quad 12GB RAM, Adobe CS4 design suite premium). I am finding that InDesign opens
painfully slowly on this system (even to the point of seeing the spinning beach ball and little clock). Has anyone else had this experience with similar hardware? Is InDesign CS4 Intel native? If not would it be advantageous to open it in Rosetta?

    Dennis,
    Try repairing your disk permissions.
Also, if you hold down the SHIFT-CONTROL-OPTION and COMMAND(Apple) keys as you launch InDesign, say 'yes' to deleting your preferences.
If you're still running painfully slow, try launching a new admin user acct, or even reinstalling in the Root User acct..
