AppleWorks paint replacement (for OS X Intel)

I used to use AppleWorks (for Mac) for the paint program that was built into it
and sometimes the draw program as well
I don't need another word processor as I have iWork and Microsoft Office with Microsoft Word, however I am having trouble finding a paint program for MacOS X that is similar to AppleWork's paint program, and It would be nice if it wasn't too expensive, but if my only option is a expensive program I am willing to go that way (I would just have to save up LOL :-)) I don't have AppleWorks installed anymore and it doesn't look like I could find a old copy somewhere and it would be better anyway if I bought more modern software.

The AW paint module is actually very primitive. It's worth getting something more modern even if you have to take the time to learn it.
GraphicConverter is quite a bit more powerful and should do everything you've been used to, and then some.
Photoshop Elements has a steeper learning curve but is extremely powerful: valuable it has layers (meaning that when you create an object and then deselect it you can still select it and edit or move it).

Does Pages have a replacement for Appleworks Clippings? If so, where do I find it? And better still, does it have an equivalent to Word's AutoText feature, with drop-down picklists?
    Cheers, Simon

    You might look into EazyDraw.
It's reported able to open AppleWorks Draw documents, and the "Draw" name would indicate it handles vector drawings.
That would save at least one step in the process.

  • What database program will convert my Appleworks DB for use on Intel platform?

What database program will convert my Appleworks DB for use on Intel platform?

Yes, you just need the appleworks folder from applications.
However, whether or not this is strictly legal is another question entirely, I'm afraid, unless you are planning to remove appleworks from your computer. You could just buy her her own copy of Appleworks, too.

  • Is FileMaker Pro a replacement for Appleworks??

I love Appleworks(using the newest version) and have been using it for years. My database recently got corrupted and this is not the first time I've had problems.
Please share thought about Filemaker. I work for myself and my needs are primarily database related. for the financial end, i'm using MYOB.
    Thanks!!

    Hello,
Filemaker is a lot more powerful then AppleWorks and it should be a very good replacement for the AppleWorks database. But you can see for yourself if it is the right thing for you. Filemaker is offering a 30 day trial version (see link below).

  • Replacement for Appleworks "Draw" Program?

    Hi -
With Apple's announcement that it will no longer upgrade or support Appleworks, can anyone recommend a simple (and inexpensive) replacement for AW's Draw program? I use it a lot for creating CD/DVD covers and inserts and would love to find a more modern and -- but non-complex -- replacement. Thanks for any recommendations.
    Shelly

With Apple's announcement that it will no longer upgrade or support Appleworks, ....
I guess I don't understand the premise here. It's been years and years since Apple has supported AW in any reasonable way, and it's been known or at least accepted for some time that nothing further was likely to happen after 6.2.9.
The only thing that's changed is that it's no longer sold in the Apple Store. The support page (http://www.apple.com/support/appleworks/) still exists, downloads and links are still alive from there, and of course there is still this forum and the rest of the support structure in place (knocking softly on wood).
At the end of the day, why start rushing around now to look for a replacement? If it meets your needs and will continue to do so, then you should, and should be able to, continue to use it.
In a different thread in a different forum I came across a post which stated that AW would not be usable on Leopard. If that's the case, it's come as news to me — is it some announcement that I've missed, some connection I've not made?
If so — so sad, too bad, and will just delay my transition into the new OS.

  • AppleWorks Paint

    Hello
Sorry if this question has already been asked/answered before but I was wondering, how do I change the work space area on Paint and then save it so everytime I go to AppleWorks paint it will be that size?
    Thank You,
    Holly

    Hi Holly,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
Launch ApplWorks and open a new Paint document.
    Go Format > Document
Change the two Size values (Pixels across and Pixels down) to your desired values. (The maximum size is 2000 x 2000 pixels)
    Click OK
    Go File > Save
Name the file "AppleWorks PT Options"
Click the "Template" radio button near the bottom of the dialogue.
(AppleWorks will change the filename's suffix from .cwk to .cws, and will change the location to Templates.)
    Click Save.
    Close the document.
Any new Paint document will adopt the values you set for this template. You can change the template values at any time by repeating the steps above (and clicking Replace when asked if you want to replace the existing file).
You can change the default parameters for any type of AppleWorks document using essentially the same process. Use the same name (AppleWorks XX Options), changing only the XX portion of the name to the two-letter code for that type of document. (The document type code appears at the end of the document name in the title bar.)

  • Photo in Appleworks paint

I have a (sentimental value) photo that was sent to me as TIFF. Somehow, I pasted it into an Appleworks Paint document and have lost the original download.
I would like to put it in iPhoto 5, but it "could not be imported (may be an unrecognized file type or the files may not contain valid data)"
Then I tried to place it in my system 9 Adobe Photoshop LE but "it is not the right kind of document" I also tried EZ Photo but no go.
Is there any way I can get this photo into iPhoto?
    Thanks for any advice.
    Patricia
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   also OS 9 LaCie burner

    Patricia:
Try the following. In AW with the photo cropped to just what you want, i.e. now white space, etc. do a Print to PDF. Then open the pdf file in preview and use the Save As menu option to save as a jpg at the best quality level. That will give you a jpg file that you can import into iPhoto.
If you have a 3rd party image editor you might be able to copy while in AW and the past into a new document in the editor. That would let you adjust the image as desired and then save as a new jpg file.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Will any Lion compatible application open AppleWorks paint files?

Is there any available application open AppleWorks paint files?
Better yet, any Lion compatible application that will do so.

I've been saving my completed AppleWorks Draw documents for a long time by copying them into Preview and saving from there, but, of course, you lose the ability to edit them then.
A bit off-topic, but I've found that you can't copy/paste an AppleWorks Paint document directly into Preview in Snow Leopard (as you could in previous versions of the OS). You need to paste it into an AppleWorks Draw document first, and then you can copy it from there, go to Preview, and use Command +n to make a new Preview document from the clipboard which then can be saved in the image format you prefer.
Until something that truly replaces AppleWorks comes along, I'm stuck in Snow Leopard, I'm afraid.
I'm just not willing to "make do" with several different applications that don't do as much as AppleWorks does as easily as AppleWorks does it.
    Progress … isn't always.

  • Replacement for defective iMac G5

I've been offered a replacement for my Rev B iMac G5, after it was unsucessfully reapaired three times in its warranty for the same problem (inverter replaced once and logic board replaced twice for a video issue). Will I receive another iMac G5 or an Intel model?
    Thanks.
    iMac G5 Rev B   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   iMac G5, PowerBook G4

I have been told by the sales dept. that it will indeed be an Intel model!
The Apple people who misinformed me were not speaking from experience or knowledge obviously, just assuming I would get, in their words, a "like for like" machine. Being the first ones to take my calls, it's safe to assume they're not specialists. I'll come here next time!

  • I wonder if it's possible to replace my original processor (Intel 575 2ghz) in my presario CQ60-116?

I wonder if it's possible to replace my original processor (Intel 575 2ghz) in my presario CQ60-116? The reason is that I really struggel with streaming live videos (from viaplay.no) on my 3 years old Compaq Presario CQ60-116EO. I might believe that this could be one of the reasons for stream video (Silverlight) is not ok. The other thing I might think it is is the video card (if any), and if that is too poor. Can anyone please help me here as I really like to keep this pc for a while more. I'm really satisfied with it in all other way for my use. That's why I might spend a bit money on it to revitalize the power on it.

The short answer for the CPU upgrade is:  Absolutely!
A internal video upgrade for the system board model in your notebook is not possible. (See the Notebook Upgrade FAQ for other external options)
Your Celeron 575 is at the bottom end of the list of compatible cpus for your notebook. You are fortunate to have chosen one of the few system boards that has so many processors that are compatible to it. All of the processors in the list are duo core processors. The processor currently installed is a Celeron. The performance difference between your CPU and any of these is like the difference between night and day.
The top of the line are these two.
    Intel® Core™2 Duo processors
    (6-MB L2 cache, 1066-MHz front
    side bus (FSB)):
    T9400 2.53-GHz processor
    T9600 2.8-GHz processor
    Intel Core2 Duo processors
    (3-MB L2 cache, 1066-MHz FSB):
    P8600 2.4-GHz processor
    P8400 2.26-GHz processor
    P7350 2.0-GHz processor
    Intel Core2 Duo processors
    (2-MB L2 cache, 800-MHz FSB):
    T5900 2.2-GHz processor
    T5800 2.0-GHz processor
    Intel Pentium® Dual-Core
    processors
    (1-MB L2 cache, 667-MHz FSB):
    T3400 2.16-GHz processor
    T3200 2.0-GHz processor
My reference source is the Compaq Presario CQ60 Notebook PC HP G60 Notebook PC Maintenence and Service guide. Each of the processors listed has BIOS support.
Upgrading the processor involves an almost complete disassembly and reassembly of your notebook. That is best left to experienced individuals.
    Happy upgrading!
    Best regards,

  • APPLEWORKS PAINT DPI AND RESOLUTION / IMAGE SIZE

I am struggling to make a 10" x 10" design in appleworks paint using at least 288 DPI. But the max resolution is 2000 pixels x 2000 pixels. This gives me a tiny square, not 10" x 10". The print shop I want to submit to dictates the size (10 x 10) and wants at least 200 DPI. Is there not some way for me to choose a DPI other than 72, 144, 288, 300 or 360??? I love appleworks paint but this is frustrating.
I did a 7.5" x 9" design, using 144 DPI @ 1010 x 1300 pixels and it SEEMED to come out fine, but they want higher DPI, and when it was opened as PNG (in an email) it turned out huge.
    What am I doing WRONG?

    Hi,
Give this a try and see if this works.
    1. Create a custom page size 11x11 using page setup. The extra inch gives you some play with the margins.
    2. Create a drawing document then under the Format menu select the Show ruler command.
    3. Create a paint frame. Activate the paint frame and change the resolution to 288 dpi.
    4. Resize the paint frame to 10x10 by dragging using the frames handles and using the ruler as a guide.
    5. When you have completed the drawing save it as a pdf instead of jpg. If you save it as a jpg the resolution will revert to 72 dpi. If you save is pdf, the paint resolution should be maintained at 288 dpi. To save it as pdf use the print command and use the save pdf under the pdf button. Most print shops should be able to handle pdf.
    Hope this helps.

  • Cant open PC Paint files with Appleworks paint program

I have been using the very simple Paint program that comes with windows. I have finally made the move and ditched the PC for something more stable.
When I try to import my .bmp pictures I used to work on into Appleworks it insists on opeing the Drawing program that has no "fill" etc. Even when I open the Paint program and then "force" it to open a .bmp only part of the picture is shown. I thought that a .bmp is pretty basic and common file type.
Does anyone know if Appleworks can handle .bmp files and if not what are other options. I didn't really feel the need to have a $170 paint program for what I am doing.
    Hope you can help.
    Michael

    Dale,
    Thanks for your reply.
The problem is that I need to use the "fill" in the paint program.
I have actually just been able to get the file to load into Appleworks paint after reading about using the .pict save. All looked good untill I tried to fill. What happens now is that the fill is very chunky and does not bleed thru at all. This makes it pretty useless at the moment.
Same problem, with a twist now.
Looking forward to any further ideas.
    Michael

Everything is not working fine, and a pop with sparks is not a normal result from turning on a power supply. If you got it from Tiger send it back and get this one.
I talked to the rep earlier, but I had to go to a meeting. When I called him back he said he was on the phone with Intel to make sure my CPU would work with that board. I know it will work so I have no clue why he called them. He didn't seem to concerned about the PSU though. I told him that the PSU popped and made sparks and it didn't phase him at all. I already told him I wanted to exchange the RAM with different kind and I wanted a new PSU. When I give him the new RAM and the PSU I want I will give this one a try.
    Thank you for your help.
