AppleWorks to iWorks cross-over guide

I wish there was a guide that would give those of use hard-core AppleWorks users a clue to comparable tasks in Pages and Numbers. Since so many of the commands and terminology is different, it is often difficult to figure out how to do something that was so easy in AppleWorks.
For instance, some shortcut commands are the same, like copy and paste, but Copy Format, Paste Format, and things like that are not.
Does anything like this kind of cross-over guide exist?
It would be so helpful for us to be able to cross-reference tasks that we were accustomed to in AW and find the corresponding way to do it in Pages, if it is even possible.

I am not aware of a cross over guide. My recommendation is
1) new program, new learning. Accept that there is a learning curve.
2) read the new programs manual/guide
3) practise doing things you did in the old program in the new one, eventually you'll find out how to do it in the new one.
4) read discussions here what interests you, especially those with a star (resolved).

Yes. In January 2005 Apple released iWork and stated they were "building the successor to AppleWorks".
AppleWorks includes word processor, spreadsheet, database, paint program, draw program and presentation modules.
iWork '06 only has Pages and Keynote. Pages is a word processor and layout program with a table feature which acts like a simple spreadsheet. Keynote is a presentation program. Both Pages and Keynote are superb programs (not without minor flaws though) which take full advantage of Mac OS X's advanced features. AppleWorks ignores Mac OS X's features.
Many of us are using both. That is, using Pages and Keynote as replacements for AppleWorks' word processor and presentation modules, but using AppleWorks' spreadsheet, database, and paint modules.

Pages will produce a much nicer 3 fold brochure than AppleWorks will. It uses Mac OS X's typography, opacity, and PDF based drawing features with 'simple to start' templates. These features combine to produce professional quality documents.

Pages doesn't have drawing tools like a drawing program would. Instead you use shapes, borders, etc to produce these effects.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, or by a peripheral device.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

Transparent shadow crossing over the image in pdf output

Hi Folks,
In recent days, we are frequently facing problem in using of tiff format image in InDesign. In pdf output, there is some transparent shadow crossing over the image. The problem occurs in ps to pdf as well as export pdf settings. The issue was not happened for the past 5 years.
If it is a reproducible error, we could find the root cause of the problem. But the same issue does not occur if we create the pdf again. Please see below the differences in viewing of actual image & problematic image and suggest how to resolve this and why it happens.

Now I have suggested my team to convert all tiff images to psd image format. I really don't know whether it helps. All I need is to know the root cause of the issue. Anybody please suggest would be really helpful.

In Issue 2, horizontal green color shading is crossing above the play/pause icon in right hand side of the image.
In Issue 3, I have displayed the screenshot of the image placed in InDesign to show the original view of the image. But the problem shows in right hand side that is pdf output view. You can see the horizontal green color shading in 1st image and light grey color shading (at the top of "NO" text) in 2nd image.

iPhoto 9.2.3 is incompatible with MacOS 10.9.3 Mavericks. If you are running Mavericks on your system you need to update iPhoto to 9.5.1. Only, the problem is, that this version is no longer available at the App Store.
The easiest way to get a compatible iPhoto version in that case would be to upgrade to Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10, and then download the most recent iPhoto version from the AppStore, iiPhoto 9.6, like LarryHN suggested.
If you cannot download iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6 post back.

Apple TV to PC. Cross-over cable or Ethernet?

My apple TV will plug directly into the pc with iTunes. Do I need a Cross-over cable or an Ethernet Cable? And What is the difference? Also How would I do this? Thanks in advance!

I got it in April this year... If I have no internet where I am using it, how do I authenticate it to play? Here I have no internet BUT I have no HDTV here... My house has no Internet but it does have an HDTV! Do I need an HDTV to connect it to iTunes to authenticate it? Or can I use my existing Dial-Up connection to do it.. By using my dial-up connection I mean like Connect it to my laptop, and then connecting my laptop to my dial up connection and opening iTunes and do it like that... Would that work?

Satellite C660D-1GD: no sound and Red Cross over speaker

Just turned on my Laptop, Satellite C660D - 1GD and my sound isn't working.
There is a red cross over the speaker and the diagnosis didn't help at all.
Tried a system restore, nothing - no change at all. Tried going through the system drivers and there is no driver for sound :o. Ok, came to this site, downloaded the correct driver, installed and restarted and nothing again :s .
Updated the BIOS and then went into and checked the BIOS, and even checked for simple sound to just have my time wasted. Any help would be great.

Did you check if mute isnt enabled?
Press FN + ESC to enable or disable mute

Go to control panel -> sound -> Playback tab
Check if the devices in the playback tab are activated and set as default device
Additionally click right to ensure that options are marked like; show hidden devices, show disabled devices

The sound card is from Realtek.
So you can download the Realtek HD audio driver from Realtek driver page
Before installing new driver, uninstall installed Realtek driver from control panel -> programs & features

Do I use a Cross over Ethernet cable or a wire to wire Ethernet Cable going from ATV to desk top?

PC to Router cross over or Straight thro ???

Hi Friends,
I am a newbie, my question can make u laughing. I was trying to install DHCP on an router and i plugged the straight thro cable into the Ethernet interface of the router. Fortunately i got the ip address from the range i assigned.
After a while, i am surprised how can this work. Then i replaced with a cross over and that also works.
Plz tell me how is this possible.

Auto MDIX could be enabled on one of the devices. But have you verified whether the straight through cable's pinouts ?
Try plugging the straight through cable into two ports of the same switch or hub. If its a cross cable both ports should come up.(LED should be lit)

Mac pro - powerbook g4 - networking with cross-over cable

I connect my powerbook to the Mac pro with a cross-over cable.
Personal file sharing is on both computers (both Mac osx 10.4.8)
Question 1:
While most of the time I can make the connection work I still don't understand the logic behind it.
Sometimes I connect and the connection works immediately, on other occasion I have to restart one of the macs or both to make it work.
Is there another solution then restarting?
Please enlight me on the subject.

My Macpro is connected to the internet (to a ethernet-router up the line, I can not pull another cable from the router because all the ports are busy).
My powerbook is connected to the Macpro with the cross-over cable.
Can I access the internet on my powerbook through the cross-over cable. I already tried the Internet Sharing on/off thing but I couldn't make it work.

Hello Eugene,
Just a quick note to let you know you and others know that you do not need a cross-over Ethernet cable to connect your Mac Pro to another device. The idea of using a cross-over cable is a hold over from bygone days of Ethernet ports and products that either were before the auto-mdix or just did not implement them to save cost. Auto mdix Ethernet ports (which the Mac Pro, and every current Mac computer has) are able to detect the type of cabling/connection, and auto configure the Ethernet port for the proper connection. This mean you can use a regular Ethernet patch cable and not be concerned if it is a straight thru or cross-over style.
As for sharing your internet connection using your Mac Pro, yes, it can be done, and the capability is included with OS X. You can find step by step instructions by accessing the Help menu in the finder and entering "sharing Internet" (without the quotes).
However, I would suggest you just buy an inexpensive Ethernet Switch, to use to expand the number of ports available from your router, and then run a line to your other computer.

I keep getting this Red Cross over my files in CC. It's still there when I export it.
went through all layers, it ain't there by me. Anybody now what it is and how I can take it away?

I will repeat what Dave said and what has been said hundreds of times on this and other forums. If there's a Red Cross or other watermark on your project then you have a plug-in that is not been paid for or registered That's all it is to it.

Networking via cross-over ethernet

I have two PCs both running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. Both are fully updated.
One connects via wireless adapter to a router at the other end of my house (not practical to connect it via ethernet).
The router gets my ISP signal and is my Internet access point.
The other PC is in the same room but has no wireless adapter (I know I could just get one, but that is not what I want to do here).
The two PCs are close enough that I can easily connect them directly to each other with an ethernet cable.
I tried a regular cable but connecting gave me problems so I used a cross-over cable to connect them.
My original intent was to be able file access & sharing of the (let's call it guest PC) and the one with the wireless internet access (let's call it the host).
When I rebooted both I was able to open the explorer and see the host computer from the guest and vice versa on the Network list. I allowed file sharing and everything looked great.
I mapped the user and file locations from the guest that I wanted in the host PC as a network drive on the host.
Since I wasn't regularly using the guest, it went to sleep and I could not re-establish the mapped network drives nor the shared file connection. That was a pain, so I set out on another option.
I set up a Home network in the guest PC that is now accessing the Internet.
OK, I'm not exactly sure how I did that. I kept creating unidentified public networks and finally was able to create a private one on the guest that connects (I'm not sure if it was by sharing or merging) to the Internet. It has to be somehow shared
because (as I mentioned above) the guest has no wireless adapter and no other way to get Internet except by sharing the host PC's wireless access.
Well, the drives that I had mapped before setting up the Internet sharing suddenly work again fine.
But, AND HERE'S MY CURRENT PROBLEM, I cannot see the guest computer from the host in the explorer (or the other way either).
I tried then to just join the host computer's HomeGroup, but I can't. I can't join a HomeGroup created on the guest either.
I'd like to be able to view and share my files across both the host and guest.
I'd even like to be able to remote access the guest desktop from the host. (I know I can do that with LogMeIn, TeamViewer, VNC, and other programs).
I also know I can share files using Hamachi (but it does not give remote desktop control so I can't run programs).
Can anybody help me on this? Or is it impossible to use a cross-over ethernet connection between two PCs and have them both share files and be visible either browsing on the Network or in a HomeGroup?

Thanks, I have never solved this. I did check your links. At one point at least I was able to share my wireless connection, but I don't know how I did it and now I have even lost that trying to fix the fact that I could not actually network the two PCs.
Again, both running Windows 7. One has wireless adapter & connects to Internet through router - no problem there.
Second PC has no wireless adapter. I wanted to use cross over ethernet cable to connect it directly to the one that has Internet access. The idea was twofold: first, setting up a peer to peer local network with both PCs on it so I could directly open &
share files from one to the other. I fiddled so much that now I'm getting a message that the PC without the WiFi adapter does not have a valid IP address.
My second (and actually more important goal) was to allow the PC without the WiFi adapter to share the other PC's Internet connection. I did something with the merging option that made it work but I don't know for the life of me what it was. I kept having
trouble with the new network defaulting to Public and I could not change it to Private. That gave me all kinds of problems trying to create and join a HomeGroup. I could create them in each PC but neither could join the other's created HomeGroup.
Now I'm back to square one, or even worse since I can't get either of my goals solved. If it's impossible to network them P2P I'd at least like to share the Internet connection using the cross-over cable as I had it for a few days.

OT(ish): crossing over to T-SQL development

apologies for the off-topic, I've been into oracle development for a few years but am now looking at picking up some Sql server (development) skills.
I'd assume there's a few people on here who work with both, or have done through their careers.
So I was just wondering if anyone here has done this before, ie. spent years in Oracle then crossed over/picked up Sql Server. If so, have you got any...
- books/websites you'd recommend
- success / horror stories
- advice on common pitfalls / things to watch out for / things I should find familiar?

Quite a few Microsoft MVPs have written books on SQL Server programming, T-SQL etc.
- Kathi Kellenberger's book "Beginning T-SQL 2008" starts with installation of SQL Server Express and the basics of T-SQL. It's for guys who have absolutely no idea of where to start.
- The Microsoft MSDN Library is very good, and should be an invaluable resource.
- The 3 books by Itzik Ben-Gan are good too, for his lucid writing style and good depth of topics.
- For the advanced, there is "SQL Server MVP Deep Dives" - an anthology of SQL Server topics written by 53 MVPs.
The last chapter of Kathi's book is titled "Where to go next" and it lists down the websites, the forums, blogs etc. that provide a wealth of information on T-SQL and Sql Server. Or you may google "sql server websites".

Taking video without it crossing over to other devices

How can I take video on iphone6 without it crossing over to my other device and using up the storage on my iPad?

You can't delete them without doing so on his iPad.
It's probably happening because you are sharing the same ID for iMessage. To prevent it, one of you needs to go to Settings>Messages>Send & Receive, tap the ID, sign out, then sign back in with a different ID. (You can continue to share the same ID for iTunes.)
