Appleworks unexpectedly quits

I have an updated imac G3 with 10.3.9 installed - the Appleworks updater always says that it needs the original US discs - I have used one of the many discs we have ( Australian ?).
The programme runs until you use the paint or draw tools then it quits.
I have nine macs in my office but this one is being used by my 80 year old mum who likes Clarisworks ( instead of MS office)
So she can uses Claris works in Classic mode and converts to Appleworks and OSX to print - extremely complicated for someone who has no computer skills as such, and frustrating for me when I have so many macs, and discs of appleworks and cant get this one to work. Please help !!!

Hi Roger
It seems you have the International English (Australian) edition of AppleWorks installed, but are trying to update it with the the US Updater.
You need to get the International English updater from the following web site:
If you're not sure whether you have the English/US or International English/Australian edition installed, you can download the "What AppleWorks Version?" AppleScript from my web site which will tell you what you have installed. NB The AppleScript only works in Mac OS X.
<http://dmgsoftware.com/applescript/index.html>
Given the crashes, I'd also suggest you delete AppleWorks preference files. See Peggy's User Tip describing how to do this. You can also download my shareware program Sidekick to do this - it has a 'free' feature to reset AppleWorks:
<http://dmgsoftware.com/sidekick/index.html>
Cheers.
Dale

  • Appleworks "unexpectedly quit" cannot relaunch

I have been using an older version of Appleworks on my iMac for a few years. 2 days ago it uexpectedly quit for good. Clicking the relaunch doen't work as it keeps showing the same relaunch, report or ignore window. I have sensitive spreadsheet files I've been using daily & I've tried opening them with "Numbers" but it doesn't allow me to open them because they are password protected. In other words, I need to get Appleworks to work.
I've deleted all (I think) all Appleworks (Application not Data) files & re-copied files from my laptop but it hasn't worked as I get the same Ignore, Report or Relaunch window. I've also tried downloading from various sites but I keep finding an "updater" instead of the actual program. Any ideas would be appreciate it.

    Hi Ben,
Before going on, here's one more test to do: Try opening AppleWorks in a different user account. If you have ony one user registered on your machine, go to Apple menu > System Preferences > Accounts, and add a second account. When it is added, close the preferences pane, go to the Apple menu and choose Log out. Wait for the Log in window, choose the new account, log in, then try to launch AppleWorks. If successful, it indicates the application is OK, and that the problem is in your regular account, and probably in one of the 'missing' files.
The current behaviour does pique my curiosity (not the simultaneous failure of another application so much—could be coincidence, or common cause. And I am throwing up one hand...to scratch my head.
"AppleWorks 6" covers a number of AW versions. Although the six is useful, the rest of the digits are also significnt. With AppleWorks running, you can find the full version number in About AppleWorks, the first item in the AppleWorks menu. If it won't stay open long enough to look there, locate the application in your Applications folder, click once to select it, and press command-I ('eye', not 'one') to Get Info. You'll find the full version number in the first section of the Info window.
"I have therefore downloaded the whole thing from my backup site onto a new folder & tried launching from finder window.....same result. A "Appleworks Unexpectedly Quit" window pops up with a suggestion button (blue) that says Reopen & clicking it doesn't work. The other option on this window is an OK button (white) which makes it disappear when clicked."
    What is "the whole thing"?
If you are installing a copy of an existing (and working) copy, all that should be moved is the (closed) AppleWorks 6 folder found in the Application folder on the machine where it is working. AppleWorks builds the rest of the files mentioned as it needs tham.
Before starting the move, Quit AppleWorks on both machines, and delete the files in my earlier post (and in Peggy's list) from the Snow Leopard machine. The Cache and Preferences files should be in a folder named AppleWorks, and that folder should be in your Preferences folder, inside your (user) Library folder.
If the folder and files still can't be found, try adding a new folder to the Preferences folder, and naming it "AppleWorks" (exactly as shown, but without the quotation marks). If you get an alert message that "The folder AppleWorks already exists," then there is an AppleWorks folder in that folder, and it should contain the 'missing' files. If you do nt get that alert, youhave successfully added a folder named ApleWorks to the folder you are in.
Click on the "Name: bar at the top of the list to sort the lit by name, then scroll to the new AppleWorks folder.
What are the names of the folder or file) immediately above it and the one immediately below it?
Once you have determined that the plist file and the files in the AppleWorks folder in Preferences have been removed, and that the AppleWorks 6 folder has been removed from your Applications folder, you are ready to copy the AppleWorks 6 folder from Applications on the other machine to the Applications folder on your Snow Leopard machine.
If you have a direct connection between the machines, Drag the AW 6 folder from the source machine to the Applications folder on the target machine and wait for it to copy.
If you do not have a direct connection between the two machines, copy the folder onto a thumb drive, then copy it from the thumb drive to the Applications folder on your Snow Leopard machine.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Appleworks unexpectly quits

Whenever I try to open appleworks to start a new document as soon as starting points starts to open up the whole program unexpectly quits - program doesn't quit when I open from an old document.

    Hi 'Doc,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
Sounds to me more like a case of corrupted preferences files or the recent items bug than Unicode incompatibility. The Unicode issue doesn't usually cause a crash until you start to type.
Peggy's second post covers the corrupted preferences issue.
For Recent items, the fix is to delete all or most of the items in the user's Recent Items folder, found at
Mac HD > Users > yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items.
The folder contains an alias to every item you have ever saved. Deleting the aiases does not have any effect on the original files.

    Barry

  • AppleWorks unexpectedly quitting while working in 'Draw'

I have been re-working documents in AppleWorks Draw. About five minutes or so into reconfiguration, the program quits! Very frustrating. I reported it to Apple.
    How can I troubleshoot this?

Are you typing into a text box? If so, it could be that you have a Unicode keyboard layout selected. AppleWorks can't handle Unicode, so choose a Roman keyboard layout. Since upgrading to Tiger AppleWorks quits when I type

  • I have an imac osx 5 mos.old. First time today I can not open my desktop folder/files. I need to read them. Message is: appleworks 6 quit unexpectedly. I need to read them. Is it possible that new software downloaded yesterday is problem?

I have an imac osx 5 months old. For the first time today I can not open my desktop folders which are very important to me. How can I open these folders.
The message when I click on the folder is "appleworks 6 quit unexpectedly". I can not open the folder. Is it possible that new software installed could cause the problem when I get the message "new softward available for your computer, install now. Maybe I should never install upgrade. Please help in layman's language how to open my folders. Thanks.

The curious thing here is that on the one hand the code cannot be loaded so how could the trojan code be ever executed.  But you would expect the "Unexpectedly quit" message if the intel trojan did get executed in a ppc app.  So this begs the question when (and how) does the trojan code get executed in conjunction with launching an app?
I understand code injected into a specific app like safari that uses the global environment variable to access the code in /Users/Shared.  But I don't understand how that code could be executed by attempting to run an randomly chosen ppc app.  Unless of course   other code has been injected is in a more critical place than just safari and that is scary.
Some of this was explained to us a few weeks back by an infected user who reverse engineered the code, working with Intego to figure out why he was being re-directed on Google searches. At the time, nobody believed much of anything he was saying, but F-Secure explains it more fullly in this analysis. Note that there is a filter component to keep it from loading code into apps that would be unstable, so watch for the next variant to filter out ppc only apps.
In a related matter, I got word from the PC side of the house that similar techniques are being used by drive-by infections that were injecting code into a running app which would disappear when they quit the app. A one-time infection, so to speak. Makes it really hard to even know you were temporarily infected, let alone how, why, what damage, etc.

  • Appleworks document unexpectedly quits

I have an iMac running OS 10.5.6. A student created a word processing document in Appleworks 6.2.9. Every time he tries to open it the document unexpectedly quits. I have looked through the tech support documents and the online discussions and can't find anything that addresses this problem specifically. I have tried deleting the "recent items" in the Appleworks User Data folder. I have deleted the cache files. I have deleted the preferences file in the Library. I have run Disk Utility and restored privileges. Nothing has worked. The student was basically finished with the project and now he cannot open the file. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

If he was my student I would tell him that he is a silly guy.
Working on an important document without a backup is really odd.
He played with fire and he loose !
If you may compress the file in a zip archive, attach this one to a mail and send them to my mailbox.
I will try to revive all or some parts.
Click my blue name to get my address.
Drag and drop on the TextEdit's icon is often able to recover the embedded raw text (enclosed between two blocks of garbage).

  • Appleworks 6 and ms word unexpectedly quit

Both AW6 and Word failed to open. I reinstalled AW6, but was unable to open earlier documents and new documents---received the "unexpectedly quit" notice. MS word stopped opening too. I cleared the cache, the com.appleworklists, etc. but nothing seems to working. Any suggestions?

The two most likely causes are a)having a Unicode keyboard layout selected, or b) a corrupt font. Please see these threads:

  • Old apps unexpectedly quit in snow leopard

I have my drive partitioned between Tiger and Snow Leopard. I am trying to move myself over to Snow Leopard so I don't have to keep switching. Welcome to Apple Discussions Richard
Your problem of AppleWorks crashing while building the font menu is probably easier to troubleshoot than funkyfresh's. It's an almost-100% sign of a corrupt font.
First, use Font Book to validate fonts. Even if Font Book reports no problems, it doesn't mean your fonts are all fine as far as AppleWorks is concerned. If it does find a problem, move the font to the Desktop & try restarting AppleWorks. Because AppleWorks is really an OS 8/9 application carbonized to run in OS X, it may not understand fonts being disabled if they are still in the Fonts folder.
The most frequent cause of AppleWorks quitting during start up is a corrupt font. In watching the AppleWorks start up window, do you see where it was when it crashed? If my guess is correct, it would be during "Building Font Menu." First, look for a font named Bauhaus 93. This font is installed by versions of Microsoft Office before Office 2004. The Bauhaus 93 with Office 2004 is not corrupt. If you don't find Bauhaus 93, before going through the trial & error of locating a corrupt font, there are a couple of other things to do.
First, any time AppleWorks crashes there is likely some corruption of the preferences. See my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly >If AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, for more on the preferences.
Also, have you tried launching AppleWorks from another user account? This will narrow down the possible location of a corrupt font. If it launches for another user, the troublesome font will be in HD > Users > [your account] > Library > Fonts.
The trial & error method of corrupt font isolation involves moving all of the fonts from the various font folders to another folder (the Desktop is a good place) & then moving a few back at a time & trying to launch AppleWorks. When it crashes you will know the culprit is in the last bunch.

  • Applications unexpectly quitting-sending mail during restart...help anyone?

Do any of you have some ideas for me?
I just downloaded a security update on my mother-in-law's 20"G5 in the background while we were creating an appleworks document with graphics that we sent as a group email to 7 people. My daughter hit the restart button after the security update finished downloading.
When the computer restarted, it had a box to open a new mail account, and may have asked about if we wanted to use previous settings or apply new ones. We didn't know what settings it referred to so answered use old ones. I tried re-entering all the set-up data for a mail account.
Mail program keeps quitting, and I get an unexpected quit message trying to open Address Book also, which had been open when we did the restart.
Apple Tech people aren't available until morning. I am wondering if my outgoing message hadn't finished sending when we did the restart and if this is causing a problem. Or is there any known problem with a current Security Update that anyone knows of?
Thanks for any ideas of things I could check before morning...

    Hi.
First of all, make a backup copy of these folders:
    ~/Library/Mail
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
About Address Book: Go to ~/Library/Preferences and move com.apple.AddressBook.plist to the Desktop. Go to User/Library/Application Support/AddressBook and move AddressBook.data to the Desktop. Rename AddressBook.data.previous to AddressBook.data. Open Address Book.
About Mail: Go to ~/Library/Mail and move the Envelope Index to the Desktop. If you have Message rules and Samart Mailboxes, move also to the Desktop:
    MessageRules.plist
    SmartMailboxes.plist
Open Mail. It should try to re-import all your mail.
    Good Luck.

  • Applications Unexpectedly Quitting and Scary Gray 'Restart' Screen shows up

    hi,
I recently started having several issues with applications unexpectedly quitting. There doesn't seem to be any particular pattern, just random crashes. Anything from Finder to AppleWorks to Adobe Acrobat Reader and Final Cut Pro. My computer also came up with the scary gray "you must restart your computer" screen 3 times this afternoon.
It seems to have just started today, so I went into Console to see what might be causing the problem. Here is a portion of the near the beginning of the log I found interesting:

    Nov 11 20:09:10 Christophers-G4 crashdump[206]: Finder crashed
launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: 8 more failures without living at least 60 seconds will cause job removal
launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: respawning too quickly! throttling
launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: 7 more failures without living at least 60 seconds will cause job removal
    launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: will restart in 10 seconds
I also found a very strong pattern later in the log and it continues as long as the computer is running. This message appears about every 15 seconds.
"launchd[92]: com.seagate.notificationexec.plist: 6 more failures without living at least 60 seconds will cause job removal"
I don't know if this is causing the crashes, but it seems to be the only thing happening in the log when my computer is just sitting. I assume it has something to do with a Seagate 250 external USB drive I have connected to my computer. I got it in January but the problem seems to have just started today. The drive came with software called "Drive Manager". I've had it installed in my computer since January. The only function of the software seems to be backing up the hard drive, and I really don't have a use for it. I'm thinking uninstalling it might solve the problem, but I have to find an uninstaller first. (MaxBack (listed in the log) seems to be a part of the Seagate software as well.)
Just as a side note: I've been having DVD verification failures when I burn DVDs and audio bumps while exporting video to tape in Final Cut Pro. (i even got a gray 'restart' screen while exporting in Final Cut) I don't know if these issues are related to the crashing or not but they are happening at about the same time.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. This is my main computer and I really don't want it crashing on me all the time. Thanks!
    Christopher

Boot from your installer disc and run Disk Utility. Verify your internal drive. I would hesitate about repairing it until you have made a backup of your files since on rare occasions repairing it makes it worse. If all is clear then make your backup. If it reports errors I would do a backup, then re-boot from your installer disc and this time try repairing. If it repairs the drive then you might want to do the backup again of the repaired drive. See, I'm doing this incrementally. Maybe a bit mroe effort but you're covering your bases as best you can. If DU can't repair your drive the other thing is to buy a copy of Diskwarrior and run that.
Here's my standard "uninstall applications post":
Most small programs can have all their components contained within an app package. After running, the program will likely install a file in Preferences (either in your user area, or the main preferences, or both). Dragging a program and its preferences to the trash is often all that is needed, or you can use a program like AppDelete to delete these programs. However, most app delete programs will not have an inventory of what is installed -- they just look for files that are clearly associated with the app you are deleting.
Try to find files associated with the application you want to delete by using Spotlight, Finder, or EasyFind (free and generally highly recommended) to search for the application's name. Favorite folders for files to be installed are:
    /Applications/
    /Library/Preferences/
    /Users/YourName/Library/Application Support/
    /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences
where YourName refers to the user name when you login and the / indicates the series of folders down from your main drive.
A few programs may set login items to start automatically when your computer starts or a specific user logs in. These items are located in: /Library/StartupItems/ or /Users/YourName/Library/StartupItems/ To edit these, go to your account set up in System Preferences, login items tab, select the item(s) and a "-" to remove.
More involved programs (e.g., Office) may install bits and pieces all over the place, like fonts, libraries, etc. The software installer may have an uninstall option, or there may be a separate uninstaller for these. In bad situations you have to hunt around yourself.
Some programs install invisible files. You can use a utility like Onyx to toggle visibility on your computer and check for invisible files.
Sometimes programs install files (often hidden) not readily associated with the program and if you're worried about those the only thing to do is a scan before and after installing a program and see what has changed.
Check out the utility [AppDelete|www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/systemdiskutilities/appdelete.html]. It will remove simple applications and most of their associated files.

Any suggestions. Mail on other users works fine.

It looks like the file where the account settings are stored has become corrupt. The plug-ins you have installed could have a bearing on this:
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/ProxiMail.mailbundle
    /Users/Lizzer/Library/Mail/Bundles/httpmail.mailbundle
You may try re-creating the preferences file, as follows, but you may also need to either properly uninstall or reinstall the plug-ins in order to be able to completely fix the problem.
    <hr>
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. If you have a .Mac account and .Mac synchronization of Mail data is enabled either in Mail > Preferences > General or in System Preferences > .Mac, disable it before proceeding.
    2. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    3. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong while trying to solve the problem. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the Mail folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    4. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate com.apple.mail.plist and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this solves the problem). If you have a backup of your data that includes a working copy of this file, you may try restoring it from the backup to avoid steps 5-8.
    5. Open Mail. You’ll have to set up your non-.Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don’t. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
    6. You’ll have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it’s enabled.
    7. You may also need to re-install or re-enable any Mail plug-ins you have installed for Mail to recognize them.
    8. As a side effect of re-creating com.apple.mail.plist, Mail might rename Outbox (which is where messages waiting to be sent are stored) to Delivered. The name of that mailbox is actually a misnomer, as it would contain messages (if any) that couldn’t be delivered for some reason. You can delete that mailbox if you wish.
    9. If the problem is fixed now and .Mac synchronization of Mail data was enabled at the beginning, enable it again, go to System Preferences > .Mac > Advanced, click Reset Sync Data, and choose the appropriate options to reset the Mail data stored on the .Mac server with the data locally stored on the computer, i.e. sync data must flow from the computer to the .Mac server.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Pages '08 Unexpectedly quits

Almost every time I use Pages '08 on my intel-based iMac, after closing the window Pages doesn't automatically stay open as usual but unexpectedly quits, so if I have multiple Pages windows open and I close one window, all the others close as well, making me lose any unsaved changes in those windows! If anybody has had the same or a similar problem please help! Thanks.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I don't have an answer to your question, but a suggestion until you can find the answer: save all open windows before closing any.
Have you by any chance upgraded to Snow Leopard? If so, was Pages updated to the latest '08 version first? If not, therein might lie your problem.
