Appleworks Update 6.2.9

My trouble began when I tried to convert a word document to Appleworks. No such luck! So I downloaded the update (as above). The update does not recognize my Appleworks. I tried the disk utility and discovered that it is damaged. Some have suggested that I invest in iwork but I am just as personal user not a business owner.
Text edit persists in opening the word doc. but the doc. is distorted. That is there is no image, and various announcements are not where they are supposed to be.
I need to work on these documents. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi,
A variety of information here—I'll intersperse some comments (and rearrange things a bit for clarity).
For some reason, appleworks6 opens in OS 10.4.11 BUT there is a 9 on the white bar near the language flag. I assume the 9 indicates that Appleworks is operating in system 9 as opposed to system 10.
I don't think that 9 indicates OS 9. On my iBook, running AW 6 (with no document open) in OS 9 (in the Classic environment) the menu bar is grey, not white, and contains only the rainbow Apple logo, AppleWork's File, Edit, Window, Script and Help menus, an empty space, then the time and an AppleWorks icon (the Application menu) separated by a vertical bar. Clicking the bar toggles the Application menu display between icon only and icon followed by application name. My G3 iMac, running OS 9 directly, shows the same menu bar with AppleWorks 6 running and no document open. Note that the Input menu ("language flag") is an OS X only feature, and does not appear in OS 9.
I have done as you have directed but the pop up menu does not include anything resembling your "show package content" I have used the restore CD to give me another appleworks but nothing changed.
I'm mystified. What are the first five items in the popup menu when you do this? (The first word, or even the first three letters of each item are enough.) If you Get Info on the item (Click on it once, then press command-I, or go File > Get Info), what does the Get Info window tell you beside the category "Kind:"?
When I use NeoOffice, it opens in the New Document (writing) view. When I go and get the Word doc. a little square named table appears and as a result there is more lines on the doc. page. The document is a form with boxes in it and that may be confusing to the program. I know I got it right once but every since, the table thing appears.
It's possible the Word translator in NeoOffice doesn't handle the boxes well. I suspect the same would be true with a Word > AppleWorks translator as well, as, to my understanding, AW and Word handle inserted objects quite differently. The problem of differing pagination is at least partly due to different metrics between the same font in the Mac and Windows versions. I ran into that today with a form created in MS Word and opened in NeoOffice. This was a simple document with no inserted boxes or graphics. I haven't checked to find out if the filled in form went back to a single page on the Windows machine that it came from.
One of the letters I refer to is one that admits that after the update 6.2.9 one cannot get word. I followed directions to the letter but no go.
That may have more to do with changes to Word's file format than changes to AppleWorks. AW 6 was released in 2000, and most recently came with translators for Word (Win) 6, 95 and for Word (Win)97, 2000, XP and 2002. MS recently adopted a new file format for Word files, and AW does not ahve translators for that format.
If doing so doesn't raise any issues that cause discomfort, you might want to email me a copy of the file to check how it behaves with AW and NeoOffice (and some other applications) on my machine. My address is available in my profile—click my name beside this post to get there.

  • Where is the default location for the AppleWorks updater 6.2.9?

§When I try to install the 6.2.9 updater I get the message 'The default location could not be located'

An error message when running the updater is usually due to the wrong updater for your installed version of AppleWorks or not already having AppleWorks 6 installed. If you don't already have AppleWorks 6, you'll have to buy it.
If you live in the US or Canada, click one of the two "Download" buttons on the AppleWorks 6.2.9 updater page. If you live anywhere else in the English-speaking world (UK, Australia, etc.), pick International English. In either case, if one doesn't work, download & install the other.

  • Appleworks updating and loss of fonts?

I have Appleworks 6.2.4 and the application has over 150 fonts. I want to update to 6.2.9 but this apparently has only 50 fonts. I do not want to lose anything so can I burn my present fonts and add them when the updater is installed?
If yes, how do I go about it? I know I have to gather fonts from library, system folder, etc. but where and how do I place them in the installed 6.2.9.
    Any help hugely appreciated.
    WHI

The error message means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reason is that the language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The most reliable link is at this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation. Since you are in Chicago & you got the message saying the updater couldn't find the International English AppleWorks, you need the North American English updater, the top one on the linked page.

  • Problem with Appleworks updater

trying to use the updater to 6.2.9 it refuses to execute giving the message: "the default location for this install could not be found. the install will be cancelled".
Appleworks is in the Applications folder and nothing special has been done during any install so all should be in the correct place....
Absolutely no idea what to do next....

The error message usually means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reasons are:
    1. The language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. The most reliable links are on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
    2. The application has been moved. The folder containing AppleWorks 6 must be named AppleWorks 6 AND be in the same folder with its support folders. The second part of my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, explains more.

  • Appleworks Updater 6.2

    Hi Folks,
I found that there was an updater for Appleworks, that is updater 6.2, but after downloading it, when I try to install it, I get a window saying that Appleworks 6 can't be found. Perhaps I was missing a step in between, so I tried downloading Appleworks 6.1, but all I wind up with is the same 6.2. N~one know what's going on here and why I can't install AW 6.2? I'd appreciate any insight to my question. TIA!

Place the AppleWorks application in the folder AppleWorks 6 inside the Applications folder, and verify that you're using the correct language updater. The International English updater won't work on U.S. or Canadian English versions of AppleWorks.

    am updating applewrks from 6.2.7 to 6.2.9 ... powerbook G3 running 10.3.9 ....

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Bob
AppleWorks comes in 15 different versions for different languages. It is not multi-lingual like OS X-native applications. It is possible to install any or all of them from the restore DVDs that came with the last of the pre-Intel iMacs, iBooks & Mac minis. I think the error message you're seeing is the one that means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reason is that the language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. • Problems with AppleWorks Update

I too am having problems with AW on my new Macbook. I was getting repeated crashes, so I removed AW, then reinstalled it from the DVD. It was still crashing whenever I tried to hit spellcheck, or even tried to save and close the document. I went to support and got the 6.9 updater for leopard. But the updater keeps showing the message that there is something already in the place of the updater?
AW has always been rock solid on my emac, 10.5.2 is running on both macbook and emac, but it's on macbook with leopard that is driving me nuts. Help Anyone?

Removing AppleWorks & reinstalling does not fix corruption causing & caused by crashing. The corruption lies in AppleWorks' preferences which are stored separately for each user. See this user tip for more information.

  • AppleWorks Updater?

Greetings! I have just installed from CD AppleWorks 6.2.9 which went great. I downloaded the update from Apple.com and when I attempt to install the update, I get an error message (thought that kinda thing was Windows only???): The error indicates that the Updater can't find AppleWorks 6 program to update in the Macintosh HD disk. Why not? Hello. I see it there. I have used AppleWorks and it works fine residing right there in the Macintosh HD Applications folder. I know it's there so what's up with the Updater? Any ideas, help or comments?? Thanks & God Bless!

The message is rather vague. It means it can't find a version of AppleWorks 6 for that updater to update. The usual reason is, as mentioned, the language of the updater doesn't match the language of the application. AppleWorks comes in 15 different versions/languages.
But, I think the reason you got the message is that you already have AppleWorks 6.2.9. There is nothing newer. Again, the updater can't find anything to update.

  • Appleworks update 6.2.9 will not install

    Hi,
The message reads "The updater was unable to find an installation of the US AppleWorks 6 program to update in the specified Update Location. Please select a different Update Location that contains an installation of the US AppleWorks 6 or install AppleWorks 6 from your orig." I've had the program installed since I've had the computer. Once I click OK it goes back to the Updater window but doesn't give me any option to choose anywhere to save it. It just gives a folder icon that says next it "Items will be updated in the folder "AppleWorks 6" on the disk "Mac HD."
The only options I get are Update or Quit. Also, it never gets to a window that has a program icon that I can drag into the Applications folder. Any ideas. The program has been working fine except for random crashes upon launching. Thus why I'm updating.
    Thanks, Cozy

Since AppleWorks was designated "end-of-life" it is difficult to find the updaters (especially the US/North American) on Apple's site. Here at the links I have for the 6.2.9 updater. The first has a link to the North American updater in the upper right & links to other languages further down.

  • MY Appleworks updater not responding.

My question is similar to the previous post by Emily Kessler, with some difference. I have had AW 6.2.9 installed for some time. Yesterday the AW icon in my dock suddenly changed (but Get Info says it's still 6.2.9), and when I tried to spell check a WP file, I got a message saying that the main dictionary was not installed. So I downloaded the 6.2.9 installer, but when I tried to use it, I got the dreaded rainbow whirling pizza and message "Gathering information," then message: "The default location required for this install could not be found. The install will be cancelled." ??? Spotlight doesn't find iDisk on my HD, only "iDisk Utility." ??? NB: I also have AW 6.0.4 installed (running under Classic). For almost a year, I've been using both 6.0.4 and 6.2.9 with no problem. I'm grateful for any help.
    Mac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

First, you cannot download any version of AppleWorks any where (legally). It either came with a Mac or it was purchased. You have a G4 Mac, is that a G4 iMac? If it is, AppleWorks is on the restore disks that came with it. You can install AppleWorks without erasing & restoring all of the original software. Apple has written two articles, Knowledge Base article 300316 on installing AppleWorks 6 & Knowledge Base article 61802 on restoring the software than came with your Mac.
I asked about Classic because, since you had AppleWorks 6.0.4, I thought you had an older AppleWorks 6 installer CD. The original installer for 6.0.4 won't run in OS X. It needs OS 8 or 9.
It is not at all unusual to have main & user dictionaries on the hard drive & AppleWorks not be able to spell check. That's just a matter of "telling" AppleWorks which dictionaries to use & where they are. With a word processing document open, go to Edit > Writing Tools -> Select Dictionaries... > click "Main Dictionary" (if it isn't already clicked) > Choose > & navigate to the dictionary which should be in HD > Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks Essentials > Dictionaries. The same process is used to create a user dictionary. Click "User Dictionary" then click "New" -> Save.
Yes, AppleWorks 6.2.8 has macros. It's not AppleWorks that doesn't support them, it's OS X.
I still think part of the problem is that you have/had two different versions of AppleWorks 6 on your hard drive.
When you put the AppleWorks icon in the Dock, you are not putting the actual application in the Dock, it automatically creates an alias. The actual application needs to be in the same AppleWorks 6 folder with the AppleWorks Essentials folder. If it's not in the same folder, you will not be able to spell check or translate documents into another file type.

  • Updated Appleworks will not open/ updated documents won't open

Am so frustrated! Knew my G4 was almost out of memory. Was at the Apple Store today and bought a LaCie 500GB hard drive AND a new MacBook Pro notebook. Before transferring files to the new computer, Apple told me to "save" my desktop documents on the new hard drive. Worked OK until I got to Appleworks and all my cwk files. The Appleworks icon now shows a blue label under it (huh?) and a small arrow and will not open. Hundreds of documents done on the Appleworks updated (6.2) software I can't open or transfer. Only thing that I am able to open are old documents from my original Appleworks.
Is there any way to get the Appleworks 6.2 open? and moved to the new hard drive? I'm an artist working from home... need these documents! Do I have to schlep the old computer, the new computer and the new hard drive back to the Apple store tomorrow? Help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Lani,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
I don't know what the blue label under the AppleWorks icon means. Is this the Application icon or the icon for an AppleWorks document? The small arrow, if it is curved and located at the lower left corner of the icon, means the icon is an alias to the file.
If your AppleWorks application is indeed version 6.2, you'll need to update further. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest recommended version for current Mac OS X systems (Tiger & Leopard), and the newest (and also recommended) version is 6.2.9.
The following actions should help in solving your problem.
    1. Locate the AppleWorks 6 application package. It should be at Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks. Click on it once to select it, then press command-I to Get Info. In the Get Info window, check the Version number. If it is anything other than 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, download and apply the 6.2.9 update. (See the Caution below.) If the AppleWorks 6 folder (containing the application) is not in the Applications folder, move it to that folder. If the Appleworks application package is not in the AppleWorks 6 folder, move it to that folder.
    2. After any software installation it is necessary to do a system maintenance task—Repair Permissions. Use Spotlight to locate Disk Utility and double click the file to launch the application. In Disk Utility, click First Aid, Select your hard drive, then click Repair Permissions.
    3. Whenever Appleworks is misbehaving an early troubleshooting action is to delete AW's preferences files. This is especially true if you have moved AppleWorks from one machine to another. Look in Home (yourname) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks. Delete both prefs files and both cache files found in this folder.
    4. Click on one of the AppleWorks file icons with the arrow and blue label, then press command-I. In the Get Info window, check if this icon is a file (document) or an alias. If it is a document, you should be able to open it. Check that the Open with section of the Get Info window names AppleWorks 6 as the application to open the file. If not, use the pull down menu in this section to select AppleWorks 6, then click the Change all button to apply this instruction to all .cwk files. If the icon is an alias, you will need to redo the transfer of files from the G4 to the MBP, making sure that what you are transferring are actual files, not aliases.
Still not solved? Re post with more detail on what you do to open the files, and what response you get from the MBP.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Can't open Appleworks

I was erasing the free space on my disk tonight in order to get rid of some data that I had deleted and happened to open appleworks and create a document while I was waiting. The only funny thing that happened was a message "your startup disk is full". I didn't do anything else after that and the disk utility finished and then couldn't close appleworks and the document that I was working on. I read many other posts and dumped all of the preferences and recent items and disabled items and ran a repair on disk permissions. Still can't open Appleworks. No problems with any other programs. What to do now? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
imac power pc G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   Appleworks 6.2.9

Where does it say you still have AppleWorks 6.2.7? Is it in Get Info? The splash screen when starting AppleWorks or in About AppleWorks while AppleWorks is running?
If you tried reinstalling AppleWorks, updating it, deleting preferences & recent items or repairing permissions while AppleWorks was running, none of those steps will be effective. You must quit AppleWorks first. Also, you must be logged in as an administrator to install or update AppleWorks. After installing or updating you must then repair permissions & delete the AppleWorks preferences before starting AppleWorks. I'm sure you checked, but to make sure you delete all of the AppleWorks preferences (there are four in two places for each user), take a look at my user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly.

  • Updater won't work!!!

I currently run Appleworks 6.0 on my intel macbook, and when I went to see if there were any updates for it, I found the 6.2.9 update. I downloaded, started it up and all of a sudden I get this message saying it can't find it. It thinks it's in the HD instead of the applications folder so I moved there, tried again and nothing. I don't have multiple copies or anything, just the one copy I nailed from my old strawberry imac that I put to rest in the closet about a year or so ago now.
How do I get my appleworks updated? or is the update even worth all the trouble? I can't say I've run into problems with the program so far.

I currently run Appleworks 6.0 on my intel macbook,
You should definitely upgrade. Version 6.0 will function poorly with any version of Mac OS X. I recall that version 6.1 is the minimum that Apple recommends for use with Mac OS X.
and when I went to see if there were any updates for
it, I found the 6.2.9 update. I downloaded, started
it up and all of a sudden I get this message saying
    it can't find it.
The usual reason for this type of an error message is that you are using the AppleWorks 6.2.9 US English version to upgrade an International English version.
First check what language your AppleWorks speaks and then download the matching Updater from this web site:

  • I have a MacBook Pro.  I am told that I can install AppleWorks on this Intel Machine. True or False? If true do I need to have Rosetta on the compuer?

I have an Intel MacBook Pro. I have been told I can install AppleWorks 6.2.9 on this machine. Is this correct? I read somewhere I would also need Rosetta but do not know if this is correct. If so how can i get Rosetta? I can presently open my old Appl;eWorks documents with Pages but my wife insist I try to get her AppleWorks back?
I had a copy of AppleWorks 6.0 from the old days but it would not install on my MacBook. A message came up saying Apple no longer supports OS9. I can purchase a copy of AppleWorks 6.2.9 but if it want install then I would be wasting my money.
    Thanks,  john

To install Rosetta you insert your initial Snow Leopard installation disk and double click optional install then double click the optional install package which will lead you through installing Rosetta. It is on the  install disk but is not installed by default.
Once you get Appleworks 6 working, assuming it then does, you can download the 6.2.9 update

  • Appleworks unexpectedly quits

I have an updated imac G3 with 10.3.9 installed - the Appleworks updater always says that it needs the original US discs - I have used one of the many discs we have ( Australian ?).
The programme runs until you use the paint or draw tools then it quits.
I have nine macs in my office but this one is being used by my 80 year old mum who likes Clarisworks ( instead of MS office)
So she can uses Claris works in Classic mode and converts to Appleworks and OSX to print - extremely complicated for someone who has no computer skills as such, and frustrating for me when I have so many macs, and discs of appleworks and cant get this one to work. Please help !!!

    Hi Roger
It seems you have the International English (Australian) edition of AppleWorks installed, but are trying to update it with the the US Updater.
You need to get the International English updater from the following web site:
If you're not sure whether you have the English/US or International English/Australian edition installed, you can download the "What AppleWorks Version?" AppleScript from my web site which will tell you what you have installed. NB The AppleScript only works in Mac OS X.
    <http://dmgsoftware.com/applescript/index.html>
Given the crashes, I'd also suggest you delete AppleWorks preference files. See Peggy's User Tip describing how to do this. You can also download my shareware program Sidekick to do this - it has a 'free' feature to reset AppleWorks:
    <http://dmgsoftware.com/sidekick/index.html>
    Cheers.
