Hello,
Can anyone tell me if pages offers more compatibility
to Windows than Appleworks ? (i.e. Word docs)
It is more compatible with Word than AppleWorks is. But it's still not perfect. Try NeoOffice/J if you need almost perfect compatibility with Word, but without the huge price tag.
And is pages supposed to replace Appleworks in the future ?
Yes. Apple's press release when iWork '05 was released stated that with iWork Apple were building a replacement for AppleWorks. It's not there yet though. We still need a spreadsheet, etc yet. Maybe this January at Macworld 2006.

  • How can I open files from Appleworks and Pages 4.3 in Mavericks?

I have documents I created in Appleworks and Pages 4.3 that I can't open in Pages 5.1 using Mavericks.  How can I open those files?

Mavericks is the Operating System (OSX).
LibreOffice [free] may be able to open your AppleWorks files but probably not perfectly.
Pages '09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.
Pages 5 can open Pages '09 files but will alter/damage them.

  • Export Appleworks to Pages

I thought I could export a mailing list set up for labels in AppleWorks to Pages but everytime I try to import the AppleWorks file I get the message that it's "not a word processing document". Thanks for any help.

    Willy,
Pages will open most AppleWorks word processing documents, and Numbers will open spreadsheet files. But if your mailing list was built with the database module in AppleWorks, I'm afraid you're out of luck in terms of bringing it into Pages. I keep AW on my computer solely for the purpose of using the DB module.

  • How do I open Appleworks in Pages '06 (pages 2.02) ?

I have an older version of Pages, '06 Pages 2.0 I think, and I am unable to open previously created Appleworks documents.  We are running OS 10.6 and 10.7 on different Macs.
    Anybody got any ideas?

Pages will open AppleWorks text documents saved as v6 or later.

  • How to convert Graphic-Converter of AppleWorks in Pages?

    Hi
I d'like to upgrade to OS X Lion. I know, that I can open AppleWorks-Docs with Pages. But I have made many docs with the Graphic-Converter (fractions, roots etc.). These elements cannot be edited by Pages.
    What can I do?
    Thanks
    Chris

    Thanks, Roger
I ment the Equation Editor. I tried to write a fraction in the Equation Editor of AppleWorks and to paste it into a Pages-Doc, but I made it with OS 6. It worked, but  it's not possible to edit the fraction anymore. I don't know, if the Equation Editor will still run in OS 7. I could use the Equation Editor of Word. So I have at least the possibility to create new terms.
Or do you see an other possibility?
    Kind regards

  • Importing AppleWorks in Pages 2

Importing from AW 6.2.9 to Pages 2.0.1 working VERY POORLY for me. (Was working poorly in first version of Pages, too. I had hoped Pages 2 would fix it. No sir!) I'm complaining about importing AW 6 Word Processing documents only- NO spreadsheet, no drawings, etc. Yes, the 'words' in the imported document seem to all be there, but regularly, seemingly randomly, the font itself will be changed to a different font (Chicago 10 point becomes Times New Roman 12 point), and then back!; the font points themselves will change, from 7 to 10, and 12 to 10; paragraphs of text that were bold become unbold- except for the first line- which is still bold- but the font itself has changed!. Good-looking pages (in AW 6) become a mess in Pages 2! I need help! Help! Help!
    iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Cliff
I just opened a few reasonably complex AW documents by dragging and dropping. What I did notice is that Pages doesn't recognise the Times font in the Applework and maps it too Time New Roman. This may be entirely a coincidence since that was the last font I used in Pages.
A couple of thoughts might be to look at what defaults might be in Pages for new documents/templates and align themto what's coming in.
The other is True Type Postscript issues, old classic fonts and newer OS X ones.
Third thought is doocument size. I was working only to 40 or so pages. Have you tried splitting the document and bringing in smaller peices at a time.
Last but ugle way would be totry exporting form AWs to rtf or Word format then bringing it in.

  • Recovered 1994 appleworks files; pages will not open them

I had a few discs of old files I need to access from 1994; data recovery got them onto a CD for me.  I purchased Pages (iWork) thinking it would open them, but it comes up with "created by an unsupported version of appleworks."
Does anyone know how I can open these?  Many thanks.

The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files. 1994 files are likely ClarisWorks 4 as ClarisWorks 5 came out in 1995.
Your best option would be to get a copy of AppleWorks 6. AppleWorks 6.2.9 (the current version) can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6, so a good choice would be AppleWorks 6.2.4. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest version stable in OS X. Avoid 6.2.7 - very, very, very buggy! The last time I looked, Hardcore Mac was selling AppleWorks 6.2.4. You also can sometimes find AppleWorks 6 on eBay, but it might be difficult to be sure it's no newer than 6.2.4 and has an OS X-aware installer.
Other options would be to contact a local user group or an elementary school to see if anyone has a Mac with AppleWorks & could translate the files for you.

  • Import Error Opening AppleWorks 6.2.9 .cwk files in Pages 3.0.2

Once upon a time I could open all my Appleworks 6 files in Pages. Now, trying to open these files in Pages produces an "Import Error - AppleWorks document 'name xxx.cwk' is not a word processing document."
The file(s) were saved, re-saved and re-saved again as an AppleWorks 6.2.9 .cwk files. Pages 3.0.2 will no longer open any of my Appleworks 6 .cwk files. No drag-and-drop. No FILE/OPEN. Nothing ... same "Import Error."
Anyone having the same problems opening AppleWorks 6 .cwk files? Any solutions? Any advice? Thank you.

There was someone else here awhile back that also had problems opening AppleWorks word processing files with Pages. I had no problem opening the files with either AppleWorks or Pages, so we never did figure out what was the cause. I'd be glad to take a look at one or two of these files. • How do I set default to Pages instead of Appleworks in Snow Leopard?

How do I change default from Appleworks to Pages in Snow Leopard?

Section starts are a page property.
If you don't want the text to misalign when you edit, break your text into individual stories for each section. Editing will then cause either an overset at the end of the section/story (in which case you can add a page or pages, or it will shrink away from the end of the last page leaving blank space. In Either case, your section starts will remain on the page where they are supposed to be.

  • PC Document Opens Flawed in Pages & Appleworks

Received a pc doc. (with tables, etc.) via email that I can open in Text Edit, Appleworks, and Pages, but the formatting is off. Not by a lot, but enough that I can not print it up as is without a distortion of the original formatting.
I thought Pages in particular would be up to the task, but apparently not. So, would MacLink Plus Deluxe solve this problem for me, or am I going to have to consider buying the Mac version of Word?

You might consider either NeoOffice or OpenOffice, both free but with OpenOffice you need the latest beta to work with Leopard 10.5.5. Earlier versions are fine with Leopard up to 10.5.5
I use both and they are nearly as good as MS Office and a bit cheaper.

  • AppleWorks doc won't open in Pages

I have a new iMac Intel with iWork.  My old G3 had AppleWorks 6. I had a crash on the G3, and lost all my data. However, I had most of it backed up to cd's.
When I try to open one of the AW6 doc's, Keyote opens and tells me it can't open the doc. Can someone tell me how to get Pages to open instead of Keynote?
    Thanks,

iMac4,1   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   Intel Core Duo

It doesn't seem to matter if I have Pages open or
not, Keynote still opens with the same message.
Having Pages open makes no difference.
Don't double-click the file to open it. As you've discovered this will cause Keynote to start.
    Instead:
    * start Pages,
    * select its File > Open menu,
    * from the Open dialog box locate an AppleWorks word processing document
    * click the Open button.
    I'm
about ready to go into my HD and trash Keynote to see
if that would help or re-install my AppleWorks 6.
Installing AppleWorks 6 might be a good idea regardless. You will be able to open any AppleWorks documents (Pages only opens word processing documents).
Yesterday, I was able to open some of my AW
documents with Pages, I don't know what happened.
The only thing I did this morning was to change my
password on my machine back to what it was on my old
G3, thinking that may have something to do with not
being able to access the old AW docs with Pages.
This shouldn't have anything to do with the problem. AppleWorks doesn't rely on the Mac OS X user's password for anything.

  • IMPORT APPLEWORKS DOCUMENTS INTO PAGES

With appleworks totally dead (just found out with my lion update), I'm a teacher with 1000's of old AW files I might want to access, update or import into pages....  Is there a way?
I've got a 2009 iMac running lion, iworks 08 (rarely use), ipad 2.
    Thanks

You won't need to run AppleWorks in an earlier OS IF, big IF, your AppleWorks files are AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheet or presentation. The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. If you still have access to AppleWorks you can copy the contents of draw documents, paste them into an AppleWorks word processing document in object mode (click the arrow in the tool panel), save the WP document & then open it in Pages. You can copy & paste from AppleWorks to Pages but you would have to do it object by object or it will be one big uneditable object. Check Yvan Koenig's iDisk for many AppleScripts he has written to make conversion easier. Most are made to do batch conversions.
There is nothing other than AppleWorks that can open paint or database documents. Database data can be copied & pasted into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, saved & opened in Numbers or saved as ASCII/plain text & opened in most any spreadsheet, database or word processing program. Paint documents can be saved as one of many different formats to be opened in most image editing programs. I recommend using PICT or PNG for best results.

  • Appleworks only prints blank pages ( whether printer, PDF or Preview)

I am at the end of my rope.
Since updating to 10.4.7, none of my Appleworks database pages work properly. The one that has customer’s special orders in it prints, previews and pdfs only blank pages.
The Appleworks database we use to place vendor orders will only print from preview. No direct-to-printer or pdfs will work.
Both databases reside on the a MacBook Pro in the front of the store. From that location:
    1. Won’t print anything but blank pages
    2. Won’t preview anything but blank pages
    3. Won’t PDF anything but blank pages
I transferred the database to the G4 PowerBook in the back office. Same story, in all cases. It is also running 10.4.7.
We are using Appleworks 6.2.9...the same version we’ve used since its release.
I’ve trashed both the prefs and the p.list. Still nothing.
Our customer and vendor files are critical to operation of the business...we simply have to get them out. HELP!
MacBook Pro, G4 PowerBook, G4 tower   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hello paperqueen,
    In the first place-
Can you print a newly created WP document of AW6 in problem machines under OSX10.4.7?
Can you print a newly created DB document of AW6 in problem machines under OSX10.4.7?
The common factors in the two machines are not limited to OSX10.4.7.
    * Problem DB is in common.
    * User account problem may be in common. (e.g. certain customization in common)
So it is really an important test to create a new user account and check whether problem persists in the new user account. I repeat this because you seem not have done it in spite of Yvan's suggestion.
Also if the problems have occured since 10.4.7 update, re-applying Combo 10.4.7 updater (after repairing permissions) may clear things up.
Anyway, if you're using any input method, the following thread may be relevant:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=455765&tstart=0
Also it has been reported in Japanese Apple Discussions board that OSX10.4.7 introduced new problem in printing, that is if file name contains Japanese character, print to PostScript printer should fail. (PostScript error should occur)
So, if your file name contains, e.g. non-ASCII character, this might be relevant.
    Good luck,
    H

  • In Pages 5, how to get date to automatically update upon opening a template?

I'm using Pages 5.2. In prior versions of Appleworks and Pages I was able to construct and save a template in which the date would automatically update to the current date when the template was opened. I have tried "Insert Date" and I can click on that to update to current date, but I don't always remember to do that and therefore, some of my documents are dated several months prior.
Can't seem to find how to do it under Pages 5.2 Anyone have help or a work around?

    I have the same problem.
What confuses me is that all the apple provided templates in pages seem to auto update their time and date upon opening.
So there MUST be a way to do it... although I've been unable to work out how...

  • Pages from OSX Server - Slow and impossible

Is anyone using Pages 08 in an office setting with OSX Tiger Server? We are an office with only 5 users and trying to migrate from AppleWorks to Pages '08. The speed at which Pages '08 saves and opens files from our server is terrible... documents take 4 to 5 times longer to open and to save a doc that it does with AppleWorks.
Is this typical? The speed is so slow that my staff is now suggesting we move to Word or some other WP. With AWs no longer supported, we need to a new WP. Pages '08 is all that we need but the slow performance with a server makes this app a lesser choice.
    Eric

since you posted to web server forum, i have to also add that web server 7 bundles a tomcat like web container within and can be used for your web serving needs. you can download web server 7 from http://www.sun.com/webserver
