Appleworks won't launch in Tiger

I just upgraded to Tiger and downloaded the update to 10.4.3. Now I can't even launch AppleWorks 6.2.9 at all. All I get is the spinning lollipop and the "not responding" message in the Force Quit dialog. I've tried repairing permissions, but that makes no difference. Any suggestions?

Welcome to Apple Discussions Ken
Although it would appear that Suitcase was the cause of you not being able to launch AppleWorks, I think that may only be a small part. As OS X is upgraded & updated, AppleWorks seems more & more sensitive to a couple of long-standing issues. The first is the "Recent Items bug" that can cause tremendous slow-downs to the point that AppleWorks won't launch. Take a look at the top post in this forum, especially my post, Peggy, "always waiting for spinning lolipop" #1, 03:59pm Sep 13, 2004 CDT, with links to three user tips about recent items. The second is the need to trash the AppleWorks preferences after applying a system update. My user tip, AppleWorks has stopped working correctly, has more on preferences.

  • Appleworks won't launch anymore

I click on the icon and it just bounces and then stops.
    1) I emptied my recent items folder
    2) dragged the applworks icon from the dock to the desktop and then reinstalled it from the finder/applications section onto the dock
To no avail and I can't figure out why it won't work now. My eMac is pretty full- is there a minimum amount of memory needed to run it? (663.5 MB available)

Try a couple of maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
To Repair permissions, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > (your account) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.
AppleWorks cannot handle Unicode, so you must not have an "extended" keyboard layout selected in System Preferences > International > Input Menu.

  • Appleworks won't launch

getting prompt, "appleworks could not be launched because of a shared library error"
I have an eMac 10.411 and appleworks 6.2 I believe. Happened once before and Mac store
did something to make Appleworks load at start up and that has worked fine for about 6 months until
    yesterday.. Help !

  • Classic won't launch after upgrade to Tiger

I have a user who's machine was just upgraded to 10.4.5, and now Classic won't launch.
I copied the system files from the resource folder in case they were corrupt, but it didn't help.
I tried to launch classic with extensions off, no go.
    Rebuilt the desktop, no help.
when you try to launch Classic, it opens the start window and just hangs. Left it for half an hour, and it never launched.
I looked for the DivX file in /Library/application support, nothing there.
    classic worked fine under 10.3.9.
Any thoughts on what to do next? Is it safe to reinstall OS 9.2 overtop or is a complete wipe and load necessary (hope not, as user has beaucoup third party apps).
    Help!
    Thanks,

  • Trying to reinstall appleworks 6.2.2 on windows 7 but it won't launch...Help!

recently bought a new PC, installed apple works but it won't launch - running windows 7. Tried installing in compatible mode using xp sp3, but that didn't work either.  Is it a hopeless case?

    Hello
I have installed it on a 32bit Win 7 installation with no problems. I dont think I even installed it in compatibility mode. I think I just ran the Windows installer and was done with it. Anyway, I know my reply is late, but if you still need help, go ahead and reply.

  • Re-installed Tiger..not system preferenced won't launch

So I had installed the new OS on my old G5 tower a few months back, and have had a number of problems with it. I assume most of these problems are stemmed from the fact that the new OS is designed for the new intel chips, which i just missed the boat on with my tower. Either way, I decided to re-install tiger from the discs that were included with this computer when i bought it.
The install went fine, but when i launched into tiger for the first time, I found that I could not get the system preferences to load. Whenever I click the system pref option from the apple pulldown menu, an icon STARTS to pop up in the dock, then goes away and nothing loads. I have tried to repair permissions based on the advice of another user here, but it didnt help. Does anyone else have any suggestions? And If i need to completely re-format and re-start, can someone help me walk though it?
    Thansk.

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
    2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
    3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site. If your car runs on gasoline you would not want to fill the tank with diesel, so don’t try to install the PPC updater on an Intel Mac!
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
    Now proceed as follows:
    4. Close all applications.
    5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
    6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
    7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
    8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
    9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them 10.4.10. compliant. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating to Safari 3.0.4 (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed 10.4.11 and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 uses Safari 3.0.4 which is not a beta. If Safari 3.0.4 on 10.4.11 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
Moreover, trying to revert to Safari 2 when running 10.4.11 can have repercussions, as Safari 3.0.4 uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail and Dashboard Widgets etc also rely.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Two such add-on that have been frequently mentioned here for causing such problems are Piclens and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them.

  • Finder won't launch - tried everything - HELP!!!

    Okay...
So following all of the sudden, the finder won't launch. Clicking on it on the dock doesn't work, and I can't use force quit to relaunch it (obvious, since it wasn't launched in the first place). Rebooted several times, to no avail. Further noticing, that only a few apps will open (Safari, Mail, TextEdit), but others won't, and even then, you can't interact with anything on the desktop (i.e., opening a text file with Safari). Things like iTunes or AppleWorks won't open at all, both are which essential to me.
I've tried booting up in Safe Mode. Nothing. I tried repairing the permissions. Nothing. I tried running from the Install Disc, and repairing via Disk Utility (several times). Nothing. In fact, it did note several errors, but was unable to repair the drive. Also tried archive and restore off the 10.3 Disc 1, but wouldn't let me, as it said 10.4.9 was newer and couldn't repair through the older disc.
So does anybody have any solutions on this? I upgraded to Tiger via a downloaded update, so I don't have the Tiger disc to repair through. And I certainly don't want to go through the whole debacle with a complete reinstall with a slave drive. Anything would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Well that sounds like it could work...and I really should get a backup...
    BUT!
Saving that as the final straw, would there be any cheap (e.g. free) solutions left? I'd rather wait to buy another external drive, since I'm trying to save money now, so any immediate and cheap solutions would work best.
Hmm... I upgraded to Tiger via download, so I don't have the boot CD for it. But since I already have Tiger, would it be at all possible to get a free 10.4 boot CD to help with this problem? If I explain my plight to Support, do you think they could spare one, since it's very probable 10.4 Disk Utility would work, since the only reason 10.3 couldn't was because it was too low?
If that doesn't work, I suppose the only thing left to do would be to carry through and clone to an external. But first, do you think I could get a 10.4 disc for my problem, or would that be "forbidden" for some reason?

  • My apps won't launch & menu bar missing all top left icons!!!

A strange concurrence of multiple problems:
I am a pretty advanced user and have an iBook G4/1.33 GHz running Tiger 10.4.8, but I am having trouble with my PowerMac G4/500 MHz running 10.3.9 right now. I keep my PowerMac in Panther since it is almost 7 years old and I only have Tiger on my iBook disc.
Suddenly a few things started to happen at once yesterday:
    1) NONE of the top right menu bar icons (OS 9 status, modem status, iChat, monitors, AirPort, Volume, clock, etc. show up upon log-in or restart.
    2) Virtually NONE of my apps will launch from the Dock or the Finder. They bounce a few times then give up, with no error message.
I peformed successful repairs booting from both the OS X Panther disc and TechTool Deluxe. Although recommended, I can't create a TEST User because System Prefs won't launch, can't repair permissions from the problematic drive because Disk Utility won't launch, and I can't clear out caches because Cocktail won't launch.
I made sure the Application Support Folder in my Home Library had read/write permissions for me and applied to all enclosing folders as suggested. I tried trashing the com.apple.ActivityMonitor.plist preference in my Home Library also as suggested. However, it wouldn't allow me to remove the Launch Services file in the Caches folder of the main Library Folder as I also read here in the discussions.
Aside from successfully running disc repairs from the startup disc and TechTool, I tried repairing permissions from the startup CD as well (since couldn't launch any apps like Disk Utility from regular startup drive). Every time I try to repair in this manner though, after a minute it tells me "Disk Utility lost connection with Disk Managment" and I must quit and relaunch Disk Utility. However, same thing happens when I do, for both my drives running copies of OS X 10.3.9.
Only thing I can think of is to do an Archive/Reinstall of one of the two OS X systems on two different drives. But does anyone else have a clue what is causing this or what I need to try??? I read similar stories on here but nothing will all these symptoms at once.
I would REALLY appreciate some input, thanks!!!

    Menu Bar Problems ..........
Check the following link for OS X troubleshooting steps. When doing so, following all steps in the order provided:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/repairprocess.html
1 If resetting permissions doesn't help, you may have a corrupt preference file... Delete....
    Delete ~/Library/Caches (folder)
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist
    ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.systemuiserver.xxx.plist
where 'xxx' is a 12 digit (hexadecimal) numeric string
    • Then log out and back in again. You may need to go to System Preferences to put back the menu items you need to display.
    • Removing systemuiserver.plist will cause the right half of the menubar back
    its original pristine default state.
    2. Check Preferences Thoroughly;
    - Navigate to ~/Library and drag the "Preferences" folder to the desktop.
    - Restart and test your applications.
    • If this does not work, move the "Preferece" folder back to ~/Library
    • If this works, delete the old preferences folder. (You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them).
    3. Navigate to ~/Library and drag the "Fonts" folder to the desktop.
    - Restart and test your applications.
    - If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( A likely suspect is Time RO, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    4. Check Permissions Inside Home Folder
    - Navigate to ~/Library.
    - Get Info (Command + i) on the "Applications Support" folder.
    - Open the "Ownership & permissions" flippy triangle.
    - Make sure you are the owner, with "read and write" access.
    - Click on "apply to all"
    - If this is correct, open the "Applications Support" folder and do the same procedure (Command+I) for the folders with the names of the applications you are having trouble with.
Note...The reason to check this is because repairing permissions with Disk Utility doesn't touch permissions inside your home folder.
    • Create a new User.... go to System Preferences/ Accounts and click on "+" at bottom left of window..... and test the apps in this new account if they work the problem is isolated to your User
    (~ means your home directory)

  • Mail & iChat won't launch - Please help

    Hey guys
So I was trying to make a clone of a HD from another computer using Carbon Copy Cloner because I was going to wipe it out and install Tiger. I wanted to make a backup copy to my computer so I used Target Mode to bring my computer's HD to the host computer and make the copy. This was the first time I used CCC so instead of making the HD an image file I selected Choose Target or something like that, then it started making a copy of it directly to my computer's HD. I stopped it when I saw it was copying all the files and folder to my computer's HD, I mean, I thought it would make a separate folder with the name of the HD I was trying to make a backup of and put everything in it. But no, I was wrong. Then I was able to make it an image file. Backed it up, everything ready for wipe out. After finishing with the backup I erased it, and then installed Tiger without a problem. Going back to my computer I encountered a problem, Mail and iChat won't launch. My guess is that when CCC started making the clone to my comp's HD it messed up something somewhere on my computer affecting them. So I'm asking you guys if you can give me a hand on how to fix this problem. If anybody knows how to make them work again please let me know as I need them to work, they're part of my work's tools.
Thanks a lot and I really appreciate your help!

  • Standard widgets won't launch

    Hi,
For some reason some of my widgets (which are enabled in the Widget Manager) won't launch. Morever, they have generic widget black icons (maybe this is okay thugh). When I click on them I get the Basso beep as if there's an error.
    The widgets in question are:
    Business
    Flight tracker
    Translation
    Unit Convertor
    World Clock
Any idea what could be going on? I've repaired permissions already.
    Thanks,
    Pat

    Hi,
    I've fixed it.
Sadly it takes some effort to fix.
I installed Tiger onto an external partition then dragged the faulty widgets across from the new install to the old one and they work again now.
What's interesting is that the old widgets that had not been working had a .wdgt extension whereas the new replacing ones didn't
So it was nothing to do with fonts, however here'e the list i asked for previously. System>Library>Fonts and Library>Fonts on a standard ENglish language install:

  • Finder won't launch after re-install 7.1

I reinstalled QT 7.1 after having problems with 7.2. I was getting only audio and no video. After the reinstall I rebooted and now the finder won't launch so I can't see my hard drive or any icons on my desktop. And oddly enough the only app that will open is safari and quicktime now works!
What have I done and any clue on what just happened?

There is no "re-install" of older software versions allowed in OS X.
The only safe way to revert to previous versions is by Archive and Install using the Tiger DVD.
