AppleWorks won't open after force quit

I recently had to force quit after my computer locked up during the optomizing phase of a software update. I just realized that AppleWorks 6 won't open. I've tried several of the suggestions found in this forum: restart, dump the preferences, run repair disk, and repair disk permissions. I've tried to reinstall from my original AppleWorks disk, but am not able to launch the install application on the disk. Any other suggestions?
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.10)

How old is your AppleWorks install disk? On earlier versions the installer requires Mac OS 9.x.x to run (although it will install both Mac OS 9 and OS X versions of AppleWorks). Mac OS 9 is not supported on the intel based Macs.
Using that install disk, you should be able to install AppleWorks onto a machine that does support Mac OS 9 either directly or through the Classic environment.
Once it's installed, download and run the updater if the installed version is not either AW 6.2.4 or AW 6.2.9 (See note below). Then burn the whole AppleWorks 6 folder and its contents onto a CD, transfer the CD to your MacBook and copy the folder to the Applications folder on the MacBook. AppleWorks will create new preference files as it needs them.
To stay within the terms of the User agreement, you should delete the AppleWorks 6 folder from the Mac OS 9 machine used as an interim step in the process.
UNINSTALLATION
The basic uninstallation is pretty simple—drag the AppleWorks 6 folder from Applications to the Trash.
Because you also want to reinstall, you should also delete the preferences files described in Peggy's post.
If you were NOT reinstalling, you might also want to delete the AppleWorks User Data folder in your Documents folder.
Regards,
Barry
*AW 6.2.4 is the earliest version that is stable in OS X. It is also able to open some older AppleWorks and ClarisWorks files that cannot be opened using AW 6.2.9. AW 6.2.9 is the most recent, and apparently the last, version of AppleWorks for Macintosh. It contains a number of bug fixes, many of them removing bugs introduced in the 6.2.7 update, and adds support for scrollwheel mice. AW 6.2.7 is quite buggy and should be avoided. See also Peggy's first post in this thread.

  • Appleworks Now Won't Open (After "Force Quit")

yesterday, i chose to "force quit" my Appleworks 6 because programs were getting jammed. After that, i can no longer open Appleworks. when i try to open it, the icon just sort of "poofs" like it's going to open, and then nothing happens.
same either when i try to open an Appleworks file or open the program from the dock.
i thought maybe i could just re-install Appleworks, but i don't know how to find it in my Tiger disks.
    any ideas?
    thanks-you.

Hold down the Option key while choosing to Empty Trash to delete locked files.
As I said before, reinstalling AppleWorks rarely solves any problems with AppleWorks. 99+% of the time the trouble lies in the user's account, either full recent items & AutoSave folders or corrupt preferences.
The message you got trying to update to AppleWorks 6.2.9 means the update can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reason is that the language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions. There are several websites with links to incorrect updaters. The UK Apple site in particular has been known to point to the north American updater for quite some time. The most reliable links are on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
Whenever you do an update of the system software &/or AppleWorks, it's a good idea to do two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences).
To Repair permissions in 10.4.x, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on First Aid, then on Repair Permissions.
To delete AppleWorks' preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences & delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Then, in this same Preferences folder, find and open the folder AppleWorks Preferences, then delete all of the enclosed files (except the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.

  • ARD 3.6.1 freezing during scans, now won't open after force quit

    All,
ive been an ardent user of ARD since the beginning, but with ARD 3.5 and above, i've noticed the console freezing more often.
I 'm presently running ARD 3.6  on a mid 2009 13 inch MBP running 10.8.1. I have about 1000 machines managed by this unit.
Yesterday while scanning subnets, it froze... I force quit ARD, and now, i'm getting a spinning cursor after launch in every account on the Mac. Never displays the Computers window.
I've repaired permissions, run disk utility, and even reset ACLS on my home folder to see if it was a i/o or permissions error.  My keychain verifies.
I ran the 3.6.1 updater as a last ditch attempt, and it did nothing...
Any thoughts? I'd hate to scrap all the user's i have already captured with this mac and start again.....
    thanks in advance

  • AppleWorks won't open after SL upgrade.

I installed Snow Leopard recently and have just discovered that I can not open my AppleWorks files! I get error-#1700. I then tried opening the AppleWorks application and it won't open at all. Is there a solution to this problem? I have not found one yet. BTW, I am running 6.2.9.
I am pretty sure I installed Rosetta. Is there a way to check that?
Some files will open, many others will not.

Interesting. Dale says AppleWorks isn't supported in SL, but you're running it fine. Not sure where to go with the info you supplied me regarding the error message. I think Rosetta must be installed, because I have not been asked to install it.
Rosetta in SL isn't automatically installed. Unless you did a custom install to begin with, and included it then, or you've already run something one time and already triggered the install, it's not there yet. Again, if not and if needed, the system will react, so either way you're covered.
To see if Rosetta is installed, use the Finder menu 'Go/Go To Folder...' and use this string/path:
    /usr/libexec/oah
Study the window that opens...if there is an object there with the name of 'translate', Rosetta is already installed.
Caution^^Close that window when done and do not make any changes there!
Another slightly less intrusive method is to simply poke around your applications, locating an older app, then doing a get info...note if 'Kind:' is 'Application (PowerPC)' ...find one that is and run it. If the prompt to install doesn't pop up, then you are good to go.

  • ITunes 10.7 for Mac won't launch after Force Quit

Yesterday I downloaded a song file, which automatically tried to launch iTunes; but I was also in a couple of different other applications. iTunes was having trouble launching, and just kept running the "Loading iTunes Library" dialog box, so finally I pressed Stop on the dialog box and force quit out of the application. Since then I haven't been able to relaunch iTunes. When I try to open it, the icon will bounce for a while, then stop, and will never fully launch. It just says "Application Not Responding." Does anyone know a way to fix this?

  • Time Machine won't backup after force quit iMac

My Safari wouldn't quit, so I chose force quit from the apple icon drop down menu. When I turned my iMac back on, Time Machine would no longer work. It says I can access old data, but it won't back up any new changes. I tried utilities First Aid, but it wouldn't fully verify or repair, before stopping. I dragged and dropped the folder where I could store everything else on this 2TB Seagate external harddrive. But I could not drag and drop the backup.backup.__ files where TimeMachine resides. DoI have to reformat and lose all my saved data on Time Machine? Or is there another way?
Is it true that if you Force Quit while Time Machine is backing up it ruins the file?  How could you know Time Machine is backing up? There's no littl icon on the top right.

When I turned my iMac back on,
Force-quitting Safari won't affect your backups.  Did you also force power down on your Mac?  That can affect the data on your internal HD and/or backups.
I tried utilities First Aid, but it wouldn't fully verify or repair, before stopping.
What message did it send?  Sometimes you have to run Repair Disk 2 or 3 times to get everything fixed.  See #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
I dragged and dropped the folder where I could store everything else on this 2TB Seagate external harddrive.
Do you mean you're putting other data, besides your backups, on the TM drive?  In the same partition?  If so, that's not a good idea -- see Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #3.
But I could not drag and drop the backup.backup.__ files where TimeMachine resides.
That's correct -- you cannot copy damaged backups.
DoI have to reformat and lose all my saved data on Time Machine? Or is there another way?
See the pink box in #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.
Is it true that if you Force Quit while Time Machine is backing up it ruins the file?
If you force-quit an app (like Safari), no.  If you force power off on your Mac, that can damage the File System on any HD -- your internal HD and/or any externals, including your backups.  Usually that damage can be repaired by Disk Utility.
How could you know Time Machine is backing up? There's no littl icon on the top right.
Go to System Preferences > Time Machine and check the little box at the bottom to Show Time Machine status in menu bar.

  • Safari won't open after forcing to quit -help required

Having a problem with Safari 5.0.5 on Mac book pro (Snow leopard 10.6.8)
My 9 year old daughter was on the internet. Something was taking ages to load, so she tried to close Safari. It then asked her if she want to force it to quit and she said yes.
Since then we have not been able to open Safari. All we get is a dialogue box 'Safari quit unexpectedly, click reopen to open the application again. Click report to see more information and send a report to Apple' There's three buttons to press Ignore, Report and Reopen. Reopen just brings up the same dialogue box.
I've tried the 'Off and on' approach. I've tried downloading safari but it says I need 10.6.7 and doesn't like it. Firefox works fine. We've tried other user accounts and it doesn't work there either.
I can cut and paste the error report if that helps but it seems quite long to do it unless someone thinks it will help them help me.
    Thanks

First start you computer in safe mode (holding down the shift key while restarting) then try to open Safari, if you are able to open it, the click on the Safari menu the click reset Safari, restart your machine normally then try Safari.

  • Motion 3 Won't Open After Installing

    Hi,
I reinstalled Motion 3 after doing it 2 days ago because the beach ball keeps coming up and never leaves causing me to force quit. I let it stay up one night and when i awoke 8 hours later it was still up. thus, i reinstalled after trashing it. there's never any motion files in the library to delete and no motion files in the receipts. this time it won't open after installing it and booting down computer. I have lion 10.7.5   the fcp studio disk that i install for motion says version 3 but could have sworn on the computer when it was working it said motion 4. Any suggestions? did all my software updates too.
    Thanks,
    joe

Motion 3 is part of Final Cut Studio 2. There are many threads on these boards about trying to get those apps to install properly on OS versions above 10.6.8. Here's one such thread. A search will bring up additional ones.

  • ITunes won't open after OS update to Yosmite

ITunes won't open after OS update, ITunes has been updated, it won't open or bounce. It will not allow me to move it to trash or reinstall it. I have already updated to OS X Yosmite two times as directed by apple, I have rebooted in safe made as well as Command/Option/P/R before start up. I have opened console/system log to see if there is anything going on but when I click on Itunes nothing happens, not even so much as half a line of script. I'm stumped. If I wanted someone to tell me to turn it off and on again I'd just watch IT Crowd. please help

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
If you head into your applications folder and locate iTunes. Right click iTunes and show package contents. In there there will be a contents folder --> MacOS --> double click on the iTunes terminal icon. This should force iTunes to open via a terminal window and at the very least it will tell you what it is getting stuck on.

  • Preview is STILL frozen even after force quitting, rebooting and reopening. Help?!? I need to see my files!

Not sure what I did, but Preview continues to stay frozen even after force quitting, rebooting and reopening. It seems like it is trying to open all 720 pdf documents I have on my internal memory. That's my best guess... I really don't know what happened. I've tried clicking the 'close windows when closing application' option under general settings and every other thing I've seen listed on help sites... nothing is working. PLEASE HELP?!?

Back up all data. Quit Preview if it's running.
Hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the Finder menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following items, if they exist:
    Containers/com.apple.Preview
    Preferences/com.apple.Preview.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Preview.SandboxedPersistentURLs.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Saved Application State/com.apple.Preview.savedState
Log out and log back in. Launch the application and test.

  • Pages won't open after I downloaded some of your updates. HELP

Pages won't open after I downloaded some Apple Updates

First, we are all just users like yourself so it's not "your" updates. Which updates have you applied & in what order?
Quite a few users have had problems. From what I've read of those who have had success, this is what I suggest. It all depends on how you obtained Pages in the first place.
If you bought Pages from the Mac App Store:
Delete the Pages.app from your Applications folder. You will need to enter your password to do so.
Launch Mac App Store  & click on Purchases. You should now see an INSTALL button. Click that, enter your password, if necessary, & you should now have the latest version.
If you installed Pages from a retail box or purchased a license from the downloaded trial:
First, you must make sure the applications are where the installer initially put them. The updaters are very picky. If the location is not where the updater is programmed to look or if the folder doesn't have the name the updater looks for, it will not work. The applications cannot be renamed or moved. All three applications must be in the iWork '09 folder in Applications. That iWork folder must be named iWork '09. If it doesn't have the '09 Software Update won't find them & the updaters won't work.
Now, choose Software Update from the Apple menu, from System Preferences or launch the Mac App Store & click Updates. You should get a window similar to this screenshot. Now click the Update button next to iWork 9.2.
Alternatively, you can download the standalone update here. http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1563

  • E. o. Wilson iBook won't open after download.

    E. o. Wilson iBook won't open after download. It appears to have completely downloaded, but it won't open.

Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
Quit iBooks and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If neither of these things help, delete the book and download it again. As long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought it with, you will not have to pay for it again.
