Appleworks won't open at all

Neither an existing document, nor the application will open. I can't even see what version is it but it is the appleworks that came with my Powerbook G4 I bought about 3 years ago when the system was 10.3.1.
When I click on a document, the icon in the dock bounces once, and that's it.
I have tried shutting down the computer for a while, ran janitor. Still nothing.
thanks
Mimi

Hi Mimi,
One more maintenance task before reinstalling—try repairing permissions.
With Panthe, you'll have to restart the computer from the disk 1 of the original install set. Put the disk in, go  > Restart, then hold down the C key until you see the OS X startup screen.
Then DO NOT proceed with the system install. Check the menus for Disk Utility. Choose Disk Utility, and when it launches, select your startup drive and select Repair Permissions.
With that task finished, restart the computer again, this time from the default startup disk (your hard drive), then try launching AppleWorks.
If that again fails, then it's time to reinstall AW, using the original disk.
This will open the Classic environment as the installer on your disk is a Mac OS 9 application. The installer will install a package containing both an OS X version and a Mac OS 9 version of AppleWorks,
After the installation, open the AppleWorks 6 folder, click once on the AppleWorks 6 package and press command-I to Get Info. In the Get Info window, check the Version number of AppleWorks. If it is anything other than 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, download and install the updater available from Apple's website. 6.2.4 is the earliest version stable under oS X, and more reliable at opening files prior to ClarisWorks 5.0, while 6.2.9 includes scroll wheel (and two finger scrolling) support. 6.2.7, the version between, is quite buggy, and to be avoided.

Barry

  • Appleworks won't open at all! help!

Yesterday I was working on a word document and all of the sudden, I got the little spinning disk. I did a force quit and restarted my computer. Then, I go to open Appleworks and it doesn't do anything. I click the icon in the dock and it bounces up once and does nothing. I've tried deleting the user folder to the trash and it still won't open. Any advice??? I don't know what's going on!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Heather
I think this could be the "Recent Items bug." It's been known to strike suddenly. There are three articles in the User Tips Library dealing with Recent Items.

  • AppleWorks won't open after SL upgrade.

I installed Snow Leopard recently and have just discovered that I can not open my AppleWorks files! I get error-#1700. I then tried opening the AppleWorks application and it won't open at all. Is there a solution to this problem? I have not found one yet. BTW, I am running 6.2.9.
I am pretty sure I installed Rosetta. Is there a way to check that?
Some files will open, many others will not.

Interesting. Dale says AppleWorks isn't supported in SL, but you're running it fine. Not sure where to go with the info you supplied me regarding the error message. I think Rosetta must be installed, because I have not been asked to install it.
Rosetta in SL isn't automatically installed. Unless you did a custom install to begin with, and included it then, or you've already run something one time and already triggered the install, it's not there yet. Again, if not and if needed, the system will react, so either way you're covered.
To see if Rosetta is installed, use the Finder menu 'Go/Go To Folder...' and use this string/path:
    /usr/libexec/oah
Study the window that opens...if there is an object there with the name of 'translate', Rosetta is already installed.
Caution^^Close that window when done and do not make any changes there!
Another slightly less intrusive method is to simply poke around your applications, locating an older app, then doing a get info...note if 'Kind:' is 'Application (PowerPC)' ...find one that is and run it. If the prompt to install doesn't pop up, then you are good to go.

  • ITunes won't open  at all... only error messages

    hey guys,
no idea what's going on with my iTunes its really annoying though here's the scoop i got a lot of bad crap on my comp. so i had it formatted by a guy at work came home installed itunes opened it up it worked great all the sudden it closes itself and now it won't open at all i've redownloaded it at least ten times... nothing works... soon as i click on the iTunes icon it says iTunes has encountered a problem and needs to close i sent the error report and it said Apple had a solution to my problem.. but after hours of searching i have found nothing so i'm just going to post this up hoping someone knows whats up (um just for some info i went to my add/remove hardware and quicktime wasn't in there... that's not right i think someone let me know lol)
any help would be much appreciated really wanting to update my new songs on my iPod

No thats not right, iTUnes uses parts of quicktime to play audio and video. You need to go here and download the stand alone version of quicktime. Now apple has recently changed this page to include quicktime with iTUnes and then qwuicktime only. get the one WITHOUT iTUnes,

  • Mail suddenly won't open at all

I clicked on the stammp icon for my mac mail about 3 days ago and it won't open at all. No matter how often you click, it does nothing. If I access it through the web, it works on the web, but not straight from the icon. My ical program quit opening the same day. Any ideas about how to fix this?
    Thanks!

In the Finder, go to /Applications/. Can you see Mail there? Try to open it by double-clicking on it.
Verify/repair your disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Now, take a look at the following article, in case this is a font issue:
Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther
You may also want to read the following article:
Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch
If the above doesn't work, proceed as follows to try to identify the problem:
    1. Open /Applications/Utilities/Console.
    2. From the File menu, choose either Open Console Log, or Open System Log, or both, so that the Console application displays the contents of both system.log and console.log.
    3. In the Finder, go to /Applications/, and try to open Mail by double-clicking on it. Look at the bottom of the Console windows for messages that might be written there as a result. They may provide some clues as to what the problem is.

  • Safari won't open at all

When I try to open Safari the icon just bounces a few times and the rainbow wheel spins for a bit and then nothing happens.
Safari doesn't open, the icon stops bouncing and everything just goes back to as if I never clicked on the icon to open Safari. I don't know what is going on. Safari has always worked fine and this just started sometime yesterday out of the blue.
I've read some of the other posts and I tried to open Safari via a different user account and that did not work. I did the cache/library suggestions from my user home and that didn't work. I also did the 4.2.2.2 suggestion in the DNS Server and that didn't work either. Safari just won't open at all. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to repair the permissions? This is usually the first thing I do when something is not working right. If you recently installed a new application, sometimes the permissions can get messed up for other applications. Run Disk Utility which is in your Utilities folder to do this. You can find out more at http://www.learntomac.com/index.php/2006/10/15/repairing-permissions/
Hopefully this will work for you!

  • Firefox has been crashing when I try to close it and now won't open at all.

For some time now, Firefox has been timing out when I tried to close it, making it necessary to "force quit." Now it won't open at all. Even more strangely, I'm not able to send a crash report to Apple (I get the message "submission failed").
I've tried downloading the newest version, downloading plug-ins, and starting in "safe mode."
Also strange, in my bookmarks section the little icons had disappeared lately.

Sorry I do not use Mac s Unless someone provides a better answer I suggest you start with looking at
    * [[latest firefox issues]] (watch for any updates about new issues)
    * [[firefox crashes]] <br> That article provides general tips and suggestions, and explains how to obtain a crash ID, something that you can do even when firefox will not start
You may need to investigate the possibility of a malware problem, but try to obtain a crash ID first, that may provide a clue to the problem.

    Hey try this out:
Turn Norton 2005's Personal Firewall OFF, (turn it OFF Permanently until your ready to turn it back on) then click CONFIGURE.
Under the PROGRAMS tab remove any reference to Apple iTunes or iTunes or iTunes Helper Module or anything related. and reboot.
After coming back go back to Norton 2005's Personal Firewall, click CONFIGURE. Under the PROGRAMS tab click ADD at the bottom, a SELECT A PROGRAM
window will pop up. Add the following files one at a time, iTunes.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, QuickTimePlayer.exe, qttask.exe, QTInfo.exe. The last 3 are found
in your Quicktime folder where that is in your system. Click OK. Turn Norton 2005's Personal Firewall ON, and try starting iTunes again.
This worked for me. It seems the Quicktime files were never automatically entered into my Norton 2005's Personal Firewall allowable programs listing. Adding them
manually should help. I also noticed that from my previous version of iTunes the program listed in the Firewall was named Apple iTunes and not iTunes after I upgraded to 6.
Let me know if this works out.

  • Itunes won't open at all in Windows 8

Ever since my computer froze and had to be shut down earlier today itunes won't open at all. When I click nothing happens. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything apple related, restarting my computer, moving folders around, etc. and no solution I've found online works. This used to happen on my old laptop (Vista) but restarting would always make it work again.

Did you actually download the installer from Apple or did you use Software Update.  You can download the installer http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Maybe I'm old fashioned but I would consider repairing permissions first using Disk Utility because something caused this to go wrong the first time.  And of course make a backup of your whole library first.  It shouldn't happen but some have complained about their libraries being wiped out by iTunes updates.  Better safe...

Sounds like an activation issue. Quite Premiere Pro. Sign out of Creative Cloud. Restart Premiere Pro. Sign back in: http://bit.ly/CC-sign-out
    Hope that works for you.

  • I have a mac laptop OS 10.6.5, and recently upgraded to Firefox 4 beta, but when I try to use my hotmail account, it either never stops loading and/or many files either won't open at all or keep crashing.

When I open email in my inbox, they continually load and flash. I often have to use the "back" arrow several times to make it stop. Sometimes the message just won't open at all. Also, I can't open "sent" mail at all.

There's an HTML5 compatibility issue with Windows Live / Hotmail that affects the Firefox 4.0 betas. A Hotmail rep has said that will be fixed before the Firefox 4.0 Release Candidate comes out.
Try hitting the '''Esc''' key to stop that "cycling".
