Application builder question

Hi,
I have made some applications that I want to distribute to other users of our products. But when these applications are installed on computers with no LV package installed, drivers like LV realtime and VISA must be installed. When these packages are installed, the user are prompted with a liscense agreement from NI. Can this agreement window be removed from the installer?

That is interesting.  I had never seen that in LV7.1 & earlier either.
Thanks for sharing the info.

  • Report Builder Question: Printing PO's from E-Business Suite - POXPRPOL

I'm hoping there's someone who has the time to help me: We are using Report Builder 9, Oracle 9i, and E-Business Suite 11.5.10.
I am a new developer using Oracle, and need to make some changes to the seeded (default) POXPRPOL (Purchase Order Print - Landscape) report, using Report Builder.
    I have two problems:
    1. When I print PO Releases from E-Business Suite, and specify I want releases 1 through 2, I get those fine, but the first page is my "Purchase Agreement". The question is: Is there any way (programatically or otherwise) to say "When the "Release" fields are filled out, don't include the Purchase Agreement?
    2. Somehow, after making a few changes to the POXPRPOL report, my quantity has disappeared. Is there any suggestions on how this could happen? I look at the query where they are using "POL.QUANTITY_TO_PRINT" for the working and the non-working reports, and they look identical.
I'm hoping DESPERATELY that someone can help me - I'm really in a bind...
    Thanks!
    Steve

    Srini,
Thanks so much for your reply!!!
    1. Ok, but how do I hide a whole page? I noticed the conditional formatting, but I want to "not print" a whole page when this page is a "Purchase Agreement".
    2. I've checked the source - it's coming from POL.QUANTITY_TO_PRINT - POL is a view that is unpopulated. I assume it's populated at run-time. So now I am trying to track down where it's populated, but can't find that in report builder. The quantity is being taken into account, because I put a total at the bottom of the page, and that number matches price * pol.quantity_to_print. Very strange...
Finally, here's another question, if you don't mind:
    3. When I print a purchase order that is set up as a blanket, as I mentioned before, I get my "Purchase Agreement" first, and then one (or more) pages per release. But the "Page Number" on each is "1" because each is a one-page PO. But my "total pages" is "3", so each page reads "Page 1 of 3". Any idea if there's a way around that?
Thanks again! Hoping you have some more insight! :)
    Cheers!
    Steve

  • Report Generation Toolkit and App Builder question..

    Hello,
I am in process of modifying my test code for writing my data to Excel. When I first developed the tests I did not have the Report Toolkit of Excel so I built the ActiveX VIs I needed. Now since I have upgraded to 7.1.1 with the MSOffice Toolkit I am rewriting my test code to use the toolkit VIs as it seems to work much better and faster then what I had done.
My question is this. Since I have my testcode distributed to multiple machines when I build my App, do I need to add every Dynamic VI within the toolkit to my App? if so is there and simple way to find exactly which dynamically called VIs are used within the toolkit VIs?
    Thanks

    Greetings jdebuhr ,
I'm using LabView 7 and have the report generation toolkit, In the "Report Generation Toolkit User Guide.pdf" manual under the title Cearating stand alone applications you 'll find the names and the path of the required dynamic VIs to be included in your EXE file (using appliocation builder)
    Check this manual.

  • Report Builder Question - OA AR Aging - and a general question

I'm sure this is the wrong forum for this question, but I thought there might be someone here who might be using Oracle Applications and Report Builder who'd be kind enough to help me out.
We've recently implemented Oracle Applications 11.5.10 and I have to use report builder to change the Accounts Receiveable Aging (7 bucket) to a 5 bucket report. I've already made some changes to the seeded "ARXAGMW.rdf" report, but I'm not a big Oracle Reports guy. I've stumbled through making some changes in various other reports. But this one is just plain nasty! :)
I was thinking that I could simply add buckets 6 & 7 to bucket 5, then just hide or delete the 6 & 7 buckets. But I'm not sure where to even start. Any help with this would GUARANTEE a Christmas or other holiday card this year! :)
I really want to keep this simple as possible, so any help would be very....helpful. :)
Oh, my general question is: Are there any resouces/books for Oracle Reports (Report Builder)? I feel so lost trying to modify existing reports, let alone creating new ones.
    Thanks again!
    Steve

    Hi Steve,
I am working on the 7-bucket aging report and i want to add a new field in data model.
As the query is build dynamically, i have modified the function BUILD_CUSTOMER_SELECT to meet my requirements.
But the problem is that in the data model, the field is not present in my Grouping. and if I try to add the field in the Data Model query (Q_ Customer) section,
i get the following error: ORA-01789: query block has incorrect number of result columns.

  • Another CS6 build questions thread

    Hi guys,
My first post here, I've been reading lots on here today thanks for all the info!, I'm building a new edit of, mainly for pp & ae cs6. I think I'm there with components but would love to hear your opinions and experiences before I click the pay now button in case I've missed something or there's something better about to be released...ideally I'd like to order this in the next couple of days as I have an intense project next week but I could do it on current pc it will just be more painful!
So, I mainly edit using hdv or xdcam ex, lots of video layers & effects especially magic bullet etc...and my current setup doesn't even come close to cutting the proverbial mustard...
Am looking at following bits, but 1 question, a few years ago I had a dual Xeon system with a Canopus dvstorm card on I think premiere pro 1.5, and it was blazing fast lovely real time effects but more noticeable for me was the output render times, I've read a lot over the past three days and it seems that cs6 only uses the processor for output rendering, is this the case? Or am I missing something!?
So (based on videoguys DIY 9 and extensive research online)
Asus p9x79 pro (please advise if the ws is any better? It seems not and I have a pci FireWire card anyway...)
Intel core i7 3930k (c2) (can anyone tell me what the "rev2" difference is?
    Evga classified gtx680 4gb (I read...and read...and read....and read...and decided on this over the quadro 4000 please advise!!!???)
64gb (8x8gb) ripjaws 1600mhz 12800 (I've decided to take a punt on these as I've read on here that Samsung lv (1.3??) is more stable...this is the part I'm least confident on so please please feel free to suggest what memory!?) I've gone 64gb as I understand after effect can use it?
256gb Sandisk extreme sata3 ssd (boot)
2 1tb caviar black (striped) (are the velociraptors worth it!?)
2 2tb caviar green (pre backup "dump" drive & music/sound effects etc
    Fractal designs r4 titanium
I'm hoping that will speed things along a bit?
    My main questions are...
Edit hardware my old Canopus DVD storm, and to a lesser degree my multibridge (now gone) add something, but on this setup there's no 'edit card' if that makes sense? Am I missing something (apart from an I/o device for capture p/tape export ((FireWire??)) any 'high end' work I do is on xdcam so no capture necessary?
Memory...what's the official line? Will the ripjaws work?
Gpu... Are the quadro cards better!? Or do they assume 'professionals' are less likely to over clock there cards and so offer longer warranty ;-)?
    Any other criticisms/ recommendations?
    Thanks

Quick update...Ive just ordered the parts hopefully arrive tomorrow and I can put everything together!
Thanks so much to everyone who contributes on this forum, I havent replied to all, but I have read SO many posts on here this week!
Have I missed anything (Apart from a hardware raid controller and 10 velociraptors!!!)
I may treat myself to a new Keyboard and mouse, I have a R.A.T 9 at the moment which I absolutley love! but get fed up with swapping batteries and so considering getting the "7" either that or the logitech mx revolution... any other recomendations?
Also was about to order one of these...
    http://www.editorskeys.com/video-editing-keyboards/adobe-premiere-dedicated-keyboard.html
And will keep my shuttle xpress wheel which I never use...but am planning on trying out with this new system...

  • Build Question: error 7 occurred at source does not exist

I have VIs built in LabVIEW 6.1. It works and built well. In LabVIEW
7, It works well. But when I try to build it. I got error.
I first use the mass conpile to compile VIs and then build the exe
    with default settings. I got:
Error 7 occurred at source does not exist
    Possible reason(s):
LabVIEW: File not found. The file might have been moved or deleted,
or the file path might be incorrectly formatted for the operating
system. For example, use \ as path separators on Windows, : on Mac OS,
    and / on UNIX.
    NI-488: Non-existent board.
But It does not point out which file does not exist.
    Anyone can help me out?

    Hello yqin,
Here are some more KnowledgeBases that may pertain to your issue.
Error 7 When Building Applications and DLLs That Use the LabVIEW Report Generation Toolkit
Why Do I Get Error 7 When Building an Executable from a Build Script?
Error 7 at Invoke Node When Building a LabVIEW Executable
If the above KnowledgeBases do not work, we will want to try the following procedure.
    1. Open your Main VI.
    2. Hold + a
nd click the run arrow (forces recompile).
    3. Close the VI and mass compile it.
    4. Keep the VI closed and build the application from scratch (do not use a script).
    5. Ensure that all VIs called dynamically are included as support files before building.
Please let me know if you have any questions,

  • HowTo bring LV Application Builder to create VERSIONINFO section in *.exe?

    Our goal:
We want our LV application (*.exe that runs on LV RuntimeEngine) to have the standard Windows VERSIONINFO section as part of the *.exe.
    Why?
    - Because we want to use Windows Explorer to show the file- and product version of our LV application (properties of file).
    - Because other (non-LV) applications should be able to read the LV-application's version [via Windows SDK GetFileVersion()] to check for compatibility.
    What is Windows VERSIONINFO section?

    Hi there
if you have MS Developer Studio you can open your LV-App.exe (see Attachment DVS_Open, make sure to open as "Ressources"). After that you can add ressources to your App (see attachment Add_Version) by right-clicking on your app in the tree, e.g. "Version". These Version info than will be shown like in the jpg you posted. You can create a ressource script (.rc) in DevStudio to automate this process, but see msdn.com for more info.

  • LabVIEW 2009 x64 and application builder

    Hi
My organisation has just got a site licence for LabVIEW so I have just installed 2009 x64.
    My question is this:
If I build applications written using LabVIEW 2009 x64, will they only run on 64 bit computers? I would test this but both my computers are 64 bit machines. I have had a brief look through the build specs but there doesn't seem to be anything about 32/64 bit compatibility.
    thanks.

    Solved!

    Q. Can I build a 32-bit version of an executable from the LabVIEW 64-bit application builder?
    A. There currently is not an option to create a 32-bit version of an executable from the LabVIEW 64-bit application builder.

  • Oracle OLAP cube build question

    Hello,
I am trying to build a reasonably large cube (around 100
million rows from the underlying relational fact table). I am using
Oracle 10g Release 2. The cube has 7 dimensions, the largest of which
is TIME (6 years of data with the lowest level day). The cube build
    never finishes.
Apparently it collapses while doing "Auto Solve". I'm assuming this
means calculating the aggregations for upper levels of the hierarchy
(although this is not mentioned in any of the documentation I have).
I have two questions related to this:
    1. Is there a way to keep these aggregations from being performed at
cube build time on dimensions with a value-based hierarchy? I already
have the one dimension designated as level-based unchecked in the
"Summarize To" tab in AW manager (TIME dimension).
    2. Are there any other tips that might help me get this cube built?

Hi, I've taken a few minutes to do a quick analysis. I just saw in your post that this isn't "real data", but some type of sample. Here is what I'm seeing. First off, this is the strangest dataset I've ever seen. With the exception of TIME, DATASOURCE, and RPTCURRENCY, every single other dimension is nearly 100% dense. Quite truthfully, in a cube of this many dimensions, I have never seen data be 100% dense like this (usually with this many dimensions its more around the .01% dense max, usually even lower than that). Is it possible that the way you generated the test data would have caused this to happen?
If so, I would strongly encourage you to go back to your "real" data and run the same queries and post results. I think that "real" data will produce a much different profile than what we're seeing here.
If you really do want to try and aggregate this dataset, I'd do the following:
    1. Drop any dimension that doesn't add analytic value
Report currency is an obvious choice for this - if every record has exactly the same value, then it adds no additional information (but increases the size of the data)
Also, data source falls into the same category. However, I'd add one more question / comment with data source - even if all 3 values DID show up in the data, does knowing the data source provide any analytical capabilities? I.e. would a business person make a different decision based on whether the data is coming from system A vs. system B vs. system C?
    2. Make sure all remaining dimensions except TIME are DENSE, not sparse. I'd probably define the cube with this order:
    Account...........dense
    Entity..............dense
    IntCo...............dense
    Category.........dense
    Time...............sparse
    3. Since time is level based (and sparse), I'd set it to only aggregate at the day and month levels (i.e. let quarter and year be calculated on the fly)
    4. Are there really no "levels" in the dimensions like Entity? Usually companies define those with very rigid hierarchies (assuming this means legal entity)
Good luck with loading this cube. Please let us know how "real" this data is. I suspect with that many dimensions that the "real" data will be VERY sparse, not dense like this sample is, in which case some of the sparsity handling functionality would make a huge benefit for you. As is, with the data being nearly 100% dense, turning on sparsity for any dimension other than TIME probably kills your performance.
Let us know what you think!
    Thanks,
    Scott

  • Re: another build question! (sorry lol)

    Hi all
right, after days and days of researching all the excellent articles on here ive had to write a post! So apologies for going over old ground
Im going to build a new CS5.5 rig (having had a guts full of Apple and their FCPX fiasco its back to pc!)
so although i appreciate the 990x o'c is prob best option, bang for  buck is leading me down the sandybridge i7 2600k o'c option on p67 mobo with 16gb of ram (option to take to 32 down the line when the chips are out)
anyway, im sorted on chip mobo (msi big bang marshal p67), nivida 570 etc , its the drives im struggling on!! Im edit avchd video and some after effects, small amount of 3d, and in FCP i always transcoded everything to prores. Now on cs5.5 it looks like real time performance is possible with high end hardwear.
So mobo, ram, and chip aside, my HDD config im unsure on, ive not really got the cash to go crazy with raid controllors etc, but understand need for seperate drives, etc and tbh might even go downt he cineform route as a prores alternative (prob avoiding hassles of drive speed with avchd)
im thinking as the SSD's are now dropping in price and the ocz are producing these 500 mb r/w speed sata 6 120gb drives for a reasonable price, would 3 of these drives (one for os, one for media , one for scracth disk ) be a good set up or is it a waste of cash and should i raid 0 from bios/mobo?
I appreicate that 120 gb drives for media etc are small, but i would take project media from another much large backup drive and just use the 3x ssd set up as working disks for editing & os? once project over, clear out drives to larger back up and start new project!
Its either that or i go SSD as bootdrive, but some sort of cheap raid set up for my scratch disk, media drives? prob is if i do that, from what ive read (brain dead now) i would be best off with 2 x raid 0 as scratch disk and orginal media respectively when workign with avchd
HOWEVER, on my mobo there are only 4 sata 6 ports, so if i use one for ssd boot drive, and then im left with 3 x sata 6 ports and another 4 x sata 3 ports to raid on? how does this work? any point in getting the sata 6 drives as one would be stripped with a sata 6 drive plugged into a sata 3 port (this was my reasoning behind using 3 small sata 6 ssd's plugged to the sata 6 ports  and rest of sata 3 ports as storage and backups!
confused lol!! I just want the overclocked sandybridge system with decent gpu card, as much ram as possible at present, but im thinking my bottleneck will be in the HDD config! any suggestions are much appreicated! im not that techy so whilst have read all the articles am more confused now (plus normally a mac user, so its out of the box configuration usually!) for what its worth looking to purchase something from scan uk in terms of parts! total build cost including a reasonable screen £2,000
    many thanks

You have a limited budget, especially in the UK, but then don't we all?
Going for the 980X will triple the cost of the CPU, but even when editing AVCHD material the gains are not sizable enough IMO to justify that cost differential. Add to that you will need 24 GB instead of 16 GB and that carries an additional price tag. Both factors will easily move you out of budget range if you want to have a number of disks and possibly a raid controller.
Did you read my article To Raid or not to Raid, that is the question. It can be found under the Overview tab at the top of the page? (Currently responding from abroad on my notebook and not having the bookmarks available for easy linking). http://forums.adobe.com/thread/525263
With media and projects I would advise against a raid0, because of the lack of redundancy. For pagefile, media cache and previews (scratch disks) raid0 is quite OK. They will be recreated if needed. The performance gain from a raid0 for media and projects over a parity raid is easily offset by the time spent on making backups. For parity raids do not use WD Caviar Blacks, but look at the Hitachi 7K3000 line of disks.
The question of Sandy Bridge versus the old X58 platform is essentially one of 'which limitations are acceptable to me'.
The Sandy Bridge is a great processor and at least the equal to the old i7-9xx quad cores. However, the platform, the chipset, has its shortcomings in terms of PCIe lanes. Whether that is relevant to you, only you can decide. But hey, we would be in serious trouble if Intel did not manage some progress in two years time from the i7-920 to the i7-2600K. So of course the i7-2600K shows much more potential than the almost retired 920, it is the chipset for the Sandy Bridge that is 'flawed' in comparison to the X58, but that is no surprise, since the Sandy Bridge is a 'middle-of-the-road' platform and the X58 was a 'high performance' platform.
BFTB-wise I think that within your budget limits, you should look at the i7-2600K, but with the best disk setup you can afford.

  • Build LLB using Application Builder

It would be nice if the Application Builder could create redistributable LLBs in addition to EXEs and DLLs. I know OpenG has an app that will do that called DEAB, but it doesn't have a "Build Manager" like the the Application Builder that comes with Labview. I don't think it would be too hard for NI to add this feature to Labview.
By the way, if someone knows of a "build manager" written to work with DEAB, I'd love to know about it.
P.S. In case you're confused what I mean by "Build Manager", I mean an environment where paths can be defined, and different builds can be loaded/created/edited/saved. Dynamic VIs can be defined. Basically, the GUI portion of Application Builder.

    Alex,
    > I was talking about organizing many build INIs
    > with a GUI interface.
Yeah, that would be really cool! I was waiting for the build file format and requirements to settle down, before investing the time in a GUI. GUIs are always the very last thing that code -- doing things this way eliminates a lot potentially bad code (out of respect, I won't give any counter examples ;-).
    > Defining support files to be copied over is a
    > very useful feature as well.
Yeah, that's one feature that I need badly, too. Expect to see it in the very near future.

I have stopped asking such questions a long time ago. Instead, I just provide NI with feedback about what I want, participate in beta programs, and solve the problems that are directly in front of me. NI will add features and tools when it is in their business interests to do so. But, as a precondition they have to know that such a requirements exists. It is up to us to provide this feedback either explicitly, or by creating and demonstrating our own tools to NI.
Also, be careful of the catch 22 -- the tools you ask NI for, just might cost you $995 when they're released.
If you are interested in making the DEAB better, please help with the requirements and specification development. Once the specification is completed, the implementation can be coded in no tim

Yes, but I dream about LabVIEW ;-))

  • MSI Neo-FIS2R build questions! & SATA RAID questions!

This is going to sound like a stupid question. And I'm not even sure that I know what I am asking.
I've built two computers so far. One with an MSI K7N2G-L and another with an MSI K7N2G-ILSR. Both nForce2 motherboards with AMD processors.
Here's what I'm getting at... I'm planning on building a new machine with either the Abit IC7-G or the MSI Neo-FIS2R (both 875P boards obviously).
Now, when I built the two nForce2 boards it was really easy. I put all of the components together, turned on the machine, the bios auto enabled settings, I put the windows xp pro cd in the cd drive and formatted the hard drive for NTFS, I then installed the OS and booted the system! Then I intstalled the drivers fromt the MSI CD. Ran Live BIOS and flashed to the most current motherboard BIOS. SIMPLE! Everything worked fine.
Here's my question. For the 875P system will everything pretty much happen the same way? Or do I need to do additional things? One of my main concerns (especially if I go with the Abit IC7-G over the MSI) is flashing the bios. Do I need a floppy drive or something? I've never flashed a BIOS outside of the Live BIOS utility. I don't want to put a floppy drive in my system! What are my options here?
Not that I want to do it, but if I needed to (say with the Abit board) HOW DO I FLASH THE BIOS WITHOUT USING THE LIVE BIOS UTILTY?
Bottom line is, I'm building this system for someone else and I want it all to be a painless experience (especially if they are looking over my shoulder).
One final question. This may sound even more stupid than the first question. I'm purchasing SATA drives ONLY. I'm not purchasing any IDE drives. So, here's my question...Can I boot from a SATA drive? What if it's in RAID 0? From the posts in the forums it appears that the SATA and RAID on these 875P motherboards either doesn't work or isn't very reliable (may potentially lose data). IS THIS AT ALL TRUE?! I'm stupid when it comes to RAID and SATA. Any help in this department would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

    3. If I install two SATA drives and set up a RAID
(either 0 or 1) which drive does the OS go on?
I have never built a raid array (as yet) and have never owned a SATA disk (as yet), but from what I have read...
RAID is a method of connecting several disks together so they perform as a single disk.  That means, in response to your points above:
    1) If you install only one drive (SATA or not), it will not be set up as RAID.
    2) If you install two SATA drives, you have the option of using them as two individual drives OR setting them up in a RAID 0 or 1 configuration.
    3) Ok, RAID 0 is known as "striping" - this method makes two disks look like one big disk, that works twice as fast as the individual drives.  Every time the PC writes data to the drive, it sends the first bit of data to drive 1, the second to drive 2, then drive 1 again etc etc.  This speeds up the disk read/write time, as the two disks can both work simultaneously.  To the OS though, the two drives appear as one.  The OS will be spread across both disks - it needs both of them connected to run, take either disk out and you'll be left with half an OS (that obviously won't work)
With RAID 1 (known as "mirroring"), you still use two disks.  You will only have a useable capacity of the smallest disk however (using two 40gb drives only gives you a total of 40gb of space. with RAID 0, two 40gb disks will make one big one - nearly 80gb large {I think the RAID system itself uses a bit of space}).  The advantage with mirroring, is the second disk holds an exact copy of the first.  If one disk goes bang, you have a duplicate copy on the second - so, to answer your point above, the OS will reside on both disks.
To summarize, RAID 0 is good for increasing speed; RAID 1 is good for increasing protection of your data as you have two copies incase a drive gives up.  To get the best of both worlds you need RAID 0+1 (this method needs 4 disks though, 2 striped - then 2 mirroring the striped).
There is a lot to RAID - just search the net for some manuals if you're interested, hope this gives you an idea though (providing I've got it right!)

  • Editing system build questions

    Hi everyone,
I'm building a computer to use for video editing and graphic design.   I'm a moderate level user of Adobe's CS5 package...mainly Premiere,  After Effects, Photoshop and Illustrator.  I have some hardware questions that I was hoping to run by those who know more than me:
    1)  Processor:  do you prefer the AMD Phenom II X6 1055T or the Intel i7-930 chip?
    2)  OS:  Can Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit work, or should I upgrade to Windows 7 Professional 64-bit?
    3)  Hard drive configuration: I'm a bit confused about how  to configure my hard drives for this system.  I'm thinking of purchasing  three 1Tb 7200 RPM SATA hard drives.  Which of these options would be  preferred, or do you suggest another alternative?:
    Option 1:
hard drive #1:  OS and programs
hard drive #2:  media and project files
hard drive #3:  scratch disc and export destination
    Option 2:
hard drive #1:  OS and programs
hard drives #2 and #3:  configured as RAID 0 and containing all the  media, project files, scratch disc and exports
Thanks in advance for the help!
    Mike

You also need to consider motherboard brand and model, amount of memory, size of power supply, cpu cooling and case
Asus P6 is used a lot... the exact model will depend on just what features you need
12Gig memory is good, since 24Gig is still very expensive
If you are going to use RAID with several drives, a 1000watt power supply, otherwise an 850watt should do
Even if you are not going to overclock, get a good cpu cooler so your Intel chip will last longer
A case with lots of cooling is required
Right now, the graphics card most often recommended is the nVidia GTX 470

  • Laptop Build Questions

    Hello all,
I am replacing my old desktop and laptop with a new laptop that is better than both. I am a film student and I prefer to do my editing at home as opposed to the school so editing capabilities is a must. I own the Production CS5.5 and I would like to build my laptop to match. I've decided on an Alienware because they are the only ones who provide Nvidia cards in a laptop and provide a nice exterior at a somewhat reasonable price, and I am deciding between the M14x and the M17x. My main question has to do with a video card - the cheaper laptops come with a Geforce GT555M card with either 1.5GB DDR3 or 3GB DDR3. The higher end laptops have a Geforce GTX560M or GTX580M with DDR5. Can those higher end video cards enable GPU acceleration? If not, is the DDR5 worth the upgrade to the more expensive laptop?
Also of question is the upgradeable memory. What is the performance difference between 8GB and 16GB? Is it worth buying the more expensive laptop for the ability to upgrade to 16GB alone?
Lastly, will the addition of an eSATA port for external storage make a big difference? I'd rather keep my storage external so I can move it to school when I need to, and because I just won't be able to get the kind of storage that editing requires in a laptop without losing another feature that I want like an optical drive or portability.
I'd rather go with the cheaper, lighter, smaller M14x if the hardware differences aren't going to make a huge difference. If they are, then I'll know what I need to do. Of course, everything would be much easier if editing applications would just support ATI cards. Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm sure that you are already well aware that video editing on a laptop has compromises, so the objective is to get the best mix of features and specs. considering your budget and tolerance for carrying weight and size.
Regarding GPU, the GTX 460M and 560M have reportedly been working well, and while the more powerful GTX video cards sound great they are more difficult to cool and would not likely be as robust for video editing. DDR5 is better.
Regarding CPU, you did not ask, but make sure you choose a quad-core 32nm CPU. Even the slower versions work pretty well and will save lots vs. the faster models of CPU in that same series.
Regarding RAM, go with 16GB for sure if you care about rendering speed (i.e. burning a DVD or Blu-ray). You can squeak by with 8GB, but with RAM prices today I would not suggest it.
Regarding eSata, I REALLY like it for laptop use. Fast and very reliable. USB 3.0 would be a second choice, and firewire 800 a distant third. USB 2.0 is pretty much only useful for backing up files on a video editing rig.
Regarding brand, Sager is the first choice around this forum for mid-priced laptops ($1500 to $2500) and high-priced ($2500 and up). Asus and MSI have some offerings that are more affordable, but do not have eSata ports.
Multi-spindle laptops are great. Some larger Sager's take up to 3 hard drives! The ultimate for video editing would be a SSD boot drive (around 120GB) + RAID 0 array with two 500GB or 750GB 7200 rpm drives. If you go with a smaller form-factor that cannot hold so many drives, Hitachi's G-RAID mini is a very nice small, fast RAID 0 2.5" drive solution that speaks eSata, firewire and USB (only 2.0); only downside is you need to plug it into a wall socket if you are using the eSATA.
Finally, don't forget to look at screen resolution, not just screen size. Personally, I would want 1980 x 1080 or better if I was editing on a single laptop display much at all.

  • New Build Questions

Hello everyone, thanks for answering questions and providing information so far. My first build has been pretty smooth. I installed all the hardware and software without any issues. However I"m new to Windows, so I'm used to slightly different approach or applications or tools are in a different location that are not so easy to find at times.
Windows is up and running smooth, temps are all good, quiet, no problems upgrading, no hangups or crashes, which is great for one afternoon.
    1) I'm not sure if I configured my disk the right way when installing Windows. I'm used to doing this on a Mac that has a different approach. So, I booted to the Windows optical drive and went to install. I had to format the disk and it wouldn't let me continue unless I agreed to let Widnows make a partition if necessary so I only formatted one disk at the time, out of 6 that I installed. So, after install, I went back to Administrative tools to go back and format the rest of the 5 disk. First the Computer Management tool is hard to find in System and Security in Control Pannel. In Mac it's right there in an easy to find file called Utilites and Disk Utilities. So anyway in Disk Management I was able to format the rest of the disk and give them letters. I noticed my 6 disk are called Disk 0-5, so Disk 0 is the first disk, disk one is second disk. I hope that is ok. Also noticed that my C: drive is Disk 4 and had (Healthy, Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition.) So I suppose this is ok? I'm stumped as to what a Crash Dump is and how or why it got there? hmmm
Then drive 0 which is first disk and the one I remember formatting and installed the OS only had 100 MB that was "System Reserved" (System, Active, Primary)
I gave drive 0 the last letter I: and expaned the space from the 100 MB to format the entire drive.
However, I'm not sure what is going on here as I'm unfamaliar with this approach.
I created my back up location to a single disk H: the #5 disk and backud up and created disk image.
So is this all screwed up or what? I'm used to the OS being on one disk and not sure which one that is and what happend. I'm also experienced with Mac back up and disk imaging applications, Carbon Copy Cloner, Super Duper for when I need to copy over the entire contents of an OS disk to a new disk.
It's great that I could build this entire computer from scratch and have it up and running smooth. So, I know this must be very basic but was hoping someone might explain to me how I should go about setting up my harddrives. What kind of formatting, should I zero them out, what back up or disk image works if I need to reformat the drives and move OS and program files to another disk without having to start over with install disk.
Also, I only see 16 GB of Ram instead of 24 in the Tools about the computer. Does it need to index? Do I need more drivers for Asus Rampage?
    thanks!

"Also, I only see 16 GB of Ram instead of 24 in the Tools about the computer. Does it need to index? Do I need more drivers for Asus Rampage?"
This means your memory, Uncore, QPI, and voltage are likely not setup right in the bios.
The 100mb partition is the BCD location for windows boot manager and that is on another disk besides the OS drive which is not recommended.
