Application address book cancelled restart

I'm having an issue where quiting mail causes it to quit, then relaunch within twenty seconds and when choosing the restart command to restart the computer, address book launches and appears to interact with mail and I get the following error message:
application address book cancelled restart
Anyone else run into this issue. It comes and goes, usually comes when I need to restart and then goes away when I need to replicate it.

  • "...cannot use the application "Address Book.app" with  'leopard.'...????

I get the message: "You cannot use the application “Address Book.app” with this version of Mac OS X. "What does this mean, wat do I do? Do I lose my address book.?

you can do the following to transfer your Tiger addressbookdata file to Leopard if none of your other countermeasures are working.
    Create a new folder and give it a name such as TigertoLeopard data or whatever;
    then drag your Tiger addressbook data file into that folder;
    add .abbu to the end of the name you gave that new folder;
remember where you placed the folder and use Leopard Mail import command.

I am transferring my mother's address book and mail etc to my computer from an external hard drive enclosure and am not able to open it due to this message:  You can't use this version of the application Address Book with this version of Mac OS X. • How do I re-install the application Address Book?

I moved the office Address Book from my office desktop computer onto my new laptop just by replacing the laptop application "Address Book" with the one from the office desktop. But now I can't open Address Book on my new laptop; instead I get the error message: "You cannot use this version of the application Address Book". Apparently the office desktop was running OS 10.4 while the new computer uses OS 10.5 and apparently the 10.4 version of Address Book is incompatible with the new OS?
How do I fix this? How do I get a version of Address Book that works on my new laptop running OS 10.5?
    Ken W. Smith

    Hello Ken,
    welcome to Apple Discussions.
*You don't need any 3rd party software like Pacifist to extract Address Book from your Leopard install Discs* ! First insert your Install Disc 1. Afterwards you only have to copy/paste the following command (in one line) into a Terminal (you'll find Terminal in Applications/Utilities) and press Enter:
    cp /Volumes/Mac\ OS\ X\ Install\ Disc\ 1/System/Installation/Packages/AddressBook.pkg ~/Desktop/
This way you copy (cp) the Address Book install package to your Desktop (~/Desktop) where you can double-click it in order to run the installer. If the command given above doesn't work, check whether your install Disc is labeled "Mac OS X Install Disc 1". If need be change that name (be aware that for a blank space you have to put a backslash followed by a blank space in Terminal, compare command above). Report back.

  • Address Book canceling shutdown

We have a new bug where Address Book will open by itself.  When I quit, it goes away, then pops right back up.  Even force quitting doesn't resolve issue, it just opens up again by itself.  When I go to shut down the iMac, the shut down process is canceled because Address Book refuses to quit.  I have to either hold down the power button to get the computer to shut off, or occasionally if timed right, quit all open applications (attempted address book, but it again re-opens itself) so the only app left open is address book, tell the computer to shut down and then immediately quit address book and then the computer will shut down.  Any suggestions out there?

You probably need to rebuild the Address Book database.  Try this:
Open Address Book and export all of your contacts as vcards.  Once that's done, quit Address Book and delete this folder:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
(~ refers to your home directory.)
Then import all of the vcards back into Address Book and try the sync again.
    Any better?

  • Where can I download the application "Address Book" for OS 10.3.9

Some how or another my address book got dumped off my desktop and now I cannot get it back. It will open using my email account but that does not show the mailing address on other info. I tried using backup which had been uploaded to my idisk to "restore" but everytime I have tried to open the backup restored file, it goes back to the backup screen showing "restore or backup." When I went on my hard drive and looked for the "Address Book" application, it only appears in a previous system file and will not open either. I am quite perplexed as how to recover my "addresses." Is there a site available where I can download the "Address" application or is there another way to fix? I have already looked on all my install disks. I am running Panther 10.3.9 on an iMac.

    Sandra -
You can use Pacifist to reinstall individual applications from your installation disk. Here's a link to a MacWorld review:
    http://www.macworld.com/2004/03/reviews/aprilmacgems/
It's about halfway down the page under "Installer Info".

  • Where is the home/application/address book in Lion.  Can't find it to move in a backup of my address book.

Where is the home/application support/address book folder in Lion?  Can't find it to put in a backup.
I made a mistake.  I want to find the home/library/application support/address book - not the application itself.  The whole library is not there - is it a hidden file?  And if so how do I get it to show?

Kappy, I was going to start a Thread about the Application Folder so I'm glad you brought it up and you said that it should not even exist. I've had an Applications Folder within my Home Folder thru multiple OS. I'm even tempted to say since OS 9, but I'm not sure about that. There has never been anything in that folder and I don't remember ever creating it. Infact, The folder to me looks like a folder that would be installed as part of the OS.

  • Application . . . cancelled restart

I'm getting this error message when I try to restart the computer:  "The application Install in Progress cancelled restart."  An update to an App called "Mint Quickview" has not completed successfully, and this seems to be the install that is "in progress".  I have tried (a) force quitting Install in Progress;  it restarts spontaneously before I can do anything else.  (b) stoping Install in Progress using Activity Monitor;  it restarts the same way.  (c) Deleting Mint Quickview by moving it to the trash;  the file deletion hangs without completing, just like the "Install in Progress".  I am no longer able to use a deletion program since Mint Quickview is no longer listed on my hard disk.  I am also unable to restart the computer.  Help would be appreciated.
    MacBook Pro 5,1, 8GB RAM,

Re-install the app then use the uninstaller provider by the software developer or a utiltiy like

  • "You can't use this version of the application Address Book

with this version of Mac OSX. You have Address Book 4.1.1"
I have my address book icon in my dock. When I click on it to open - I get the error message verbatim as stated above. I'm stuck. I think it's been a couple years that it's been doing this. Haven't had a reason to until I needed to add/edit some entries.
I want to add a few Facetime contacts and Facetime doesn't give me the ability to add/edit an existing contact - so I figured I should be able open Address Book (which I faintly remember doing a while ago). Anyone be able to get this error to go away when opening Address Book?
    Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it hasn't been updated in some time. Have you moved it out of the Applications folder (or into a sub-folder inside the Applications folder)? If so, it won't update. Put it back, then download and run the Mac OS X 10.6.6 combo updater to bring it back to the current version (which is 5.0.3).

  • Address Book....   Need to download Application.

I seem to have erased the application Address Book from an IMAC computer .
I cannot find a software download for just the address book on the Apple Software Downloads.
Is there a simple way to re-install address book?
    Thank-you
    John JLC

you can not download it. you can reinstall it from the leopard install DVD. first do a spotlight search for "Address Book" and see if it's simply been moved. if it's really gone, pull it from the install DVD using [Pacifist|http://www.charlessoft.com>.

  • How do I download a new address book application?

My son deleted Address Book and now he wants its back. A software restore did not put the address book back. How do I find a way to download a new copy of the application Address Book? (He also deleted Mail app but I transferred mine over to his computer but that did not work for address book. I am running Tiger and he panther) I will strangle my son soon. Help. He should not delete applications willy nilly..not to mention they are really useful. Help.
    Ella

    Hello Ella.
If you are running Tiger and your son is running Panther, I'm not sure how the Tiger Mail.app version is working with Panther. If it is working, it probably won't be for long. Your son needs the Panther version of Mail and Address Book which are not available as a download.
You need to use an application called Pacifist with the Panther install package which allows for installing individual applications from the Panther install discs without re-installing the entire OS.
You can download Pacifist at the following link.
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/12743
If your son is currently running 10.3.9 and the Panther install package includes an earlier version, after re-installing the Panther Mail.app and Address Book using Pacifist, you need to download the 10.3.9 Combo Update and re-install 10.3.9 to get the re-installed Mail.app and Address Book applications to the current version as of 10.3.9.
You can download the 10.3.9 Combo Update here.

  • Bulk change Address Book with Application or AppleScript

    Dear all,
I'm an idiot. For all my contacts, I put the company that the person works for in the Suffix field of the Address Book entry.
I would like to change all my contacts such that the information in the Suffix field is moved to the Company field.
Is there an application or an AppleScript that I can use?
    Thank you much!

Here, use this in Applescript Editor:tell application "Address Book"
repeat with aPerson in people of group "Test Group"
if organization of aPerson is missing value then
set organization of aPerson to suffix of aPerson
set suffix of aPerson to missing value
    end if
    end repeat
    save
    end tell

  • Please help -- Address Book Crashing on Launch, causing problems with Mail

    Problem:
Address Book crashes on launch. Mail crashes on launch as soon as it tries to access address book. Can't use either program.
    History:
First noticed problem after an out-of-hard-disk space problem. Had about 2 GB left on the 80 GB hard drive in my 1 GHz iMac G4. Was comparing two very large TIFF files in Photoshop when it crashed because it had used up all the available scratch disk space. Mail and Address Book were also open at the time, along with a number of other apps.
After re-starting, Mail began crashing on launch. There had been a message open at the time of the first crash, and it appeared that the crash was happening as soon as Mail went to Address Book to find the sender's image for that message. The crash report showed that Address Book was the thread that failed.
Tried to launch Address Book; crashes on launch.
    Both applications refuse to launch.
(Have also noticed that Safari crashes when entering text in a field -- good thing I have an iBook to use to post this plea for help!)
    Attempted Solutions:
    Scoured these discussions for suggestions.
    Trashed preferences, re-started & re-launched; no luck.
Repaired permissions and disk repeatedly until squeaky clean
Used Pacifist to re-install sync services, address book, mail; no luck
Re-run Combo Update PPC 10.4.6; no luck
Have now done a full Archive and Install, re-installed the 10.4.6 combo update and the most recent security update, and verified permissions and disk.
Problem still persists -- which suggests it's something in my User library, I presume, but I'm out of ideas. Very tired and frustrated -- please help!
I've copied the most recent pertinent information from Address Book's Crash Log and posted below. Let me know if I need to post anything else, or logs from other apps. Thanks for taking the time to look into my problem, everyone!

I'm no expert on Address Book, but I can tell you that the files involved in the crash could be HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist and anything in HOME/Library/Application Support/AddresBook/. It looks like you have ignored this latest folder so far. I would try moving both items to the Desktop, restart, and see whether that stops the crashes.

  • Updating Contact info from Mail not displaying in Address Book

So I was updating an existing contact from Mail using the data detector feature. Address Book was already running in background. I clicked on the data detector and said "update existing contact". I pick the contact that I want to update. When I go to address book to see if the contact was updated, it "appears" that it hadn't updated. However, if I exit address book and restart the data does appear. So it get's in the database but doesn't display until exit and restart.

After several days of trying, i finally seem to have it working. What i ended up doing was exporting my backing up my addresses on another computer that still had Snow Leopard on it. I exported both as .abbu and vCards. I was then able to get the vCards into iCloud.
Problem was, i could not get them to import into Contacts in Mavericks. I could not even add the iCloud account to contacts. It would let me sign in and choose contacts, but iCloud never showed up in the accounts nor did the contacts show up in Contacts.
After trying repairing permissions and resetting the PRAM to no avail, it occured to me to delete the Address Book folder from /Library/Application Support
Once that folder was gone, i was able to add iCloud to the accounts and import the .abbu file from Address Book.
So if you did not export your Address Book contacts before updating, you will need a second computer that is still running Snow Leopard to export the contacts. Then you can delete the Address Book folder from the Library and you should then be able to import the contacts into Contacts on Mavericks.
    Hope this helps.

  • Address Book locks up -- not responding

OK, at wit's end here. Address Book locks up with spinning beachball every time it opens and I need to force quit it. Here's what I've tried after search through these forums:
    Deleted plist file
Deleted all files in Application Support (after backing them up)
    Repaired permissions on disk
    Verified disk
    Reinstalled Address Book
    Resolved all duplicate fonts
At one point in the process, I opened Address Book executable in the app's package and the Terminal gave message that said "Can't ABACQUIREFILELOCK Framework/AddressBook/ABAddressBook.m:2746"
Now it doesn't say that, but "/Applications/Address\ Book.app/Contents/MacOS/Address\ Book; exit"
    No crash logs in Console.
    Happens in every user account.
    Any ideas?

Yes, your Disk is corrupted... the first thing Safe Boot does is try to fix the Disk.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.
You must repair the HD, if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...
