  • If I no longer have the old application Backup installed on my Mac (part of the .Mac subscription), do I still need the folder called Backup, that is in my Library in the Application Support folder?

If I no longer have the old application Backup installed on my Mac (for performing scheduled backups of data on the computer), do I need the folder called Backup, that is in my Hard Drive, to Library, to the Application Support folder?  (There is no Backup folder in my Home Folder, to Library, to the Application Support folder.)
Backup was part of the .Mac subscription I used to have, and I have not used it since I gave up being a .Mac subscriber many years ago.  In fact I recall Apple saying at one point that they no longer supported the Backup Application.  I assume the Backup folder is just remnants from when I used to have that application, however I could be wrong, and don't want to trash the folder unwisely.
As I looked through the various items in the Backup folder, nothing appears to be modified since 2007, which further confirms that this folder is from long ago when I used to have that application.  I did notice that the main Backup folder itself was the only thing that had a more current modification date on it.  That date coincides with the date that I installed Snow Leopard on my Mac earlier this year.  But I'm assuming that any operating system software installation will place a modification date on all the various folders of one's computer, with the date the new OS was installed.
Any insight will be appreciated!  Thank you!

Since it has always been very basic to backup your computer and all it's data, Apple provides no way for you to transfer music from your iPhone back to your computer.  As you know, you can re-download all iTunes purchases, but music that you ripped yourself you'll have to just re-rip again.
You can try and find 3rd party applications that might help you.  I'm sure you'll pay, however.
Let this be a very important lesson learned.
    Best.

Does the information I enter into a third party application get backup anywhere when I plug my Touch into my computer? I purchased mSecure to keep track of all of my user names and passwords, I've also purchased iXpenselt to keep track of my expenses but I decided its useless to use these applications unless the information I enter into them gets backed-up somewhere so that when and if my Touch crashes I won't have to manually re-enter everything.

I do apologize that none told you this but here is a KB that shows you what is backed up in the Palm Profile

  • HT4847 When deciding to change backup options for installed applications on my iPhone, what exactly does the backup of applications backup??

Am I backing up the application data, like login info?  Or is it backing up the application itself, so if I were to lose or need to replace my phone, I could have all the apps loaded back on, & in the order in which they were in??

The app data is stored, and I think, a reference to all apps (but not the actual apps, since you can always download them again for free from the app store).  Getting them in the right order is iffy - I've read posts from users who restored and found apps all out of order, but I think others say everything restored okay.

  • Observed the Forum dialogue abt upgrading from OS10.4.11 to 10.6. Noted 10.6 available still making  10.5 redundant. What is best procedure for actually taking in the 10.6 w/o causing havoc for my 10.4.11 applications=backup  reformat the HD or what??pls.

In planning to upgrade from OS 10.4.11, to 10.6 Snow Leopard , which now seems to be due I am a bit anxious not to confuse my current
data storage of pictures, films, music, documents and graphics.
My query centres around: Must I fully reformat my HD, have major backups done and set aside, before inserting
my 10.6 diskette? must  I uninstall  certain programs before just backing up?
    OR
will I come across to the Snow Leopard by just entering it over my old 10.4.11 left still in place.
My iMac desktop is 6 years old, dec. 2006, Intel duocore.  I kindof hope not to have to  buy another one quite yet..
    Please wise men/women advise!?

I am a bit anxious not to confuse my current data storage of pictures, films, music, documents and graphics.
Be certain to have at least 2 backups, one a clone of the drive that you can boot from.
Must I fully reformat my HD...
    No.
have major backups done and set aside, before inserting my 10.6 diskette?
Not unless all your stuff is important... meaning a very good idea to Backup first.
must  I uninstall  certain programs before just backing up?
Mostly not a worry, some 3rd party things will likely need updating after the Install.
My iMac desktop is 6 years old, dec. 2006, Intel duocore.
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.

  • Backup ALL Service Applications thru Backup-SPFarm

I am using the following command to backup ALL service applications:
    Backup-SPFarm -Directory <BackupFolder> -BackupMethod {Full | Differential} -Item "Farm\Shared Service Applications" [-Verbose]
This is from an msdn article here ...
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ee748601.aspx
It is throwing an error for the "Farm\Shared Service Applications" saying that it is not found.  How do I figure out what I have to put in here to make this command work?
    Thanks.

Based on the example mentioned in the msdn article you have typed in the same thing farm\shared service application
That is an example. You need to specify your service application name -> for example it may be "ManagedMetadataServiceApplication"
Try that and see how you go.

  • Backup application oracle

    Good afternoon,

How can i make an application backup?

    Hello,

    - oracle application server 10.1.3
The application need to be accessible round the clock. So I need to do a online backup.
For the db, there is no problem.
Is there a special way to backup the application server.
    Any feedback will be appreciate.
    Best regards.
    Alain.Hi Alain,
For OAS 10.1.3, hot or online backup is what is called instance backup.
Please see this link about [Recommended Backup Strategy|http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B25221_04/core.1013/b25209/br_intro.htm#i1010422] to get its details.
I would also suggest that if your systems require you to be up round the clock, or with no downtime, then consider a high-availability scenario for your deployment architecture. Because, regular backups become even more important for sites that have to be up round the clock. And every decent backup strategy will have at least an initial complete cold-backup.

  • ACS 5.3.0.40 On-demand Full Backup failed.

    Hi,
I have ACS 5.3.0.40 Primary Secondary Authenticators , of which the Scheduled backup has stopped.
    When checked the :
    Monitoring Configuration >
    System Operations >
    Data Management >
    Removal and Backup

The same was observed earlier too.
    I have made the
Incremental Backup to ON and intiated the
View Full Database Backup Now. But it wasn't successful and reported an Error:
FullBackupOnDemand-Job Incremental Backup Utility System Fri Dec 28 11:56:57 IST 2012 Incremental Backup Failed: CARS_APP_BACKUP_FAILED : -404 : Application backup error Failed
Later i did the acs stop/start  "view-jobmanager" and  initiated the On-demand Full Backup , but no luck, same error reported this time too.
Has any one faced similar type of error /problem reported , please let me know the solution.
    Thanks & Regards.

One other thing; if this does end up being an issue with disk space it is worth considering patch 5.3.0.40.6 or later since improves database management processes
This cumulative patch includes fixes/enhancements related to disk management to avoid following issue
CSCtz24314: ACS 5.x *still* runs out of disk space
    and also fix for
CSCua51804: View backup fails   even when there is space in disk
Following is taken from the readme for this patch
The Monitoring and Reporting database can increase when as records are collected. There are two mechanisms to reduce this size and prevent it from exceeding the maximum limit.
    1. Purge: In this mechanism the data will be purged based on the configured data retention period or upon reaching the upper limit of the database.
    2. Compress: This mechanism frees up unused space in the database without deleting any records.
Previously the compress option could only be run manually. In ACS 5.3 Patch 6 there are enhancements so it will run daily at a predefined time, automatically when specific criteria are met. Similarly by default purge job runs every day at 4 AM. In Patch 6 new option provided to do on demand purge as well.
The new solution is to perform the Monitoring and Reporting database compress automatically.
    2.       New GUI option is provided to enable the Monitoring and Reporting database compress to run on every day at 5 AM. This can be configured under GUI Monitoring And Configuration -> System Operations -> Data Management -> Removal and Backup
    3.       Changed the upper and lower limit of purging of Monitoring and Reporting data. This is to make sure at lower limit itself ACS has enough space to take the backup. The maximum size allocated for monitoring and reporting database is 42% of /opt( 139 GB). The lower Limit at which ACS purges the data by taking the backup is 60% of maximum size Monitoring and Reporting database (83.42 GB). The upper limit at which ACS purges the data without taking backup is 80% of maximum size Monitoring and Reporting database (111.22 GB).
    4. The acsview-database compress operation stops all services till 5.3 patch 5 , now only Monitoring and Reporting related services are stopped during this operation.
    5. Provided “On demand purge” option in Monitoring and Reporting GUI. This option will not try to take any backup, it will purge the data based on window size configured.
    6. Even if the “Enable ACS View Database compress” option is not enabled in GUI then also automatic view database compress will be triggered if the physical size of Monitoring and Reporting database reached to the upper limit of its size.
    7. This automatic database compress takes place only when the “LogRecovery” feature is enabled, this is to make sure that the logging which happens during this operation will be recovered once this operation is completed. ACS generates alert when there is a need to do automatic database compress and also to enable this feature.
    8. Before enabling “LogRecovery” feature configure the Logging Categories in such way that only mandatory data to log into Local Log Target and Remote Log Target as Log collector under System Administration > ... > Configuration > Log Configuration
This “LogRecovery” feature can recover the logs only if the logs are present under local log target.
9       This automatic database compress operation also performed only when the difference between actual and physical size of Monitoring and Reporting database size is > 50GB.
10 The new CLI “acsview” with option “show-dbsize” is provided to show the actual and physical size of the Monitoring and Reporting database. This is available in “acs-config” mode.
acsview     show-dbsize     Show the actual and physical size of View DB and transaction log file

second question can I use my secondary ACS for the DataBase repository?

    Hi,
You should use an nfs server, sftp or ftp repository for backups only, something that is dedicated for storage. I would not recommending using anything that is used for production which needs internal storage to take on the task of managing another applications data.
As far as the the first question, i am not talking about the purging, i am talking about the scheduled application backups:

Is there any steps by steps doc or blog for this type of crashed?
    Thanks.

Last night our OS was crashed, and we have the last night backup of database on tape drive, but have the application backup which is 3 months before.
So, can I use this old application backup with current database backup if yes please give me the quick steps? If no patches have been applied to the application tier node since the time you took the backup you can restore those files.
I means I will installed the fresh OS and then install the Pre-Req, after that I restore/clone these backup. If you have already run preclone before taking the backup, you can run postclone. If not, then I believe cloning will not help here.
Is there any steps by steps doc or blog for this type of crashed?Rapid Clone will configure all the keys in the registry, so if Rapid Clone is not application and your backup does not include the registry you I believe the restore option is not valid in this case.

  • The best/clean/free approach to moving SharePoint Web Application between environments?

    Hello Forum,
I have an environment e.g. (Environment1) Web Application that contains 90 site collections (Including: Lists, Libraries, Workflows, and custom solutions), and its URL is (http://Dept.Company.com/)
I must move this entire Web Application from the source: Environment1 to the destination: Environment2.
What is the best and safest way to accomplish that without using any commercial migration third party tools ?
What I have in mind right now is as below:
Obviously, I cannot backup and restore all these 90 site collections back and forth between the source: Environment1 to the destination: Environment2. This is very impractical and inefficient.
I thought about Web Application backup, e.g.
    Backup-SPFarm -Directory <BackupFolder> -BackupMethod {Full | Differential} -Item <WebApplicationName> [-Verbose]
Restore-SPFarm -Directory <BackupFolderName> -RestoreMethod Overwrite -Item  <WebApplicationName> [-BackupId <GUID>] [-Verbose]
But, I am not sure if it the way to go or not? I am a bit concerned about GUID and running into unlimited problems. What do you think?
In case if I followed the: Backup/Restore-SPFarm, Should I create a Web Application in the destination: Environment2 and the URL must be 100% identical to the source: Environment1?
Well, I would love to hear your thoughts about the best practices and recommendation considering my scenario.

Hi mate, firstly you could use the method you mentioned, In any method if there is code using GUID references instead of by Name you will run into problems and hence you should do a full prior investigation and analysis to find out any custom code dependant
on GUIDS and custom solutions required etc, I would personally just take a SQL backup of the content DBs for the web application or dettach them and move them to the new source sql server(if any), create a new web-application in Env2, create the respective
managed paths, install all custom solutions that need to be installed against this web-application in the new farm, go to manage content dbs and here add the existing content dbs(the backed up ones), make one of them or the only one(if there is only one) default
and remove the empty current default content DB. URL is on the IIS end, so you can rebind the existing URL to the new web-front-ends however the load-balancer(if any) or HOST A entries need to now point to the new web-front-ends. If you use https or using
SSL you need to get the cert re-issued for the new servers and load them on the IIS and use them for URL binding. To test no you do not need the same URL, however you will need to add the new path(e.g.
http://server2:81 to the alternate access mappings for the new web-application), then lets say if you have a site called Site1 you can try after migration doing
http://server2:81/Site1. I would highly recommend doing a trial migration with backedup content DBs in Env2 and go through the findings and document them for the actual one, the thing to look for are the custom solutions
and custom code etc and getting the ssl certificates sorted for the new WFEs, if the same URL is not needed, i.e. the new ENV2 is only for UAT or testing then you don't need to use the same URL, however once again if code has hardcoded it somewhere you will
need to analyse that and fix it before or after migration. So there are some pre and post steps involved. Hope that helps. thanks.
