Application Category view in Finder

I rather like the Application category view in Finder but it is not currently of much use because so many of my applications fall into the 'Other' category.
I assume this is an attribute of the file and can be found and changed somehow.
Does anyone know where this metadata is stored and how to change it?

Thanks for this. Now just the final piece of the jigsaw to find out what reloads the Finder view to pick up the new category. If anyone can help that would be great. I have tried rebooting so it isn't that.

Windows Application - PDF Viewer

We are using windows application PDF viewer with Acrobat API. The pdf document is loading correctly without issues but the Tool menu is not displayed.
How to include tool menu in wondows form (PDF Viewer).

There is no in-box PDF API on Windows Phone 8.1.
The typical approach is to launch the pdf file into the default PDF viewer app. If you want to display it inside your app you'll need to either find a 3rd party component or write your own.

Lost category name in "Finder"

On the left of "Finder" where it says applications, movies, music, documents, pictures, etc. I accidently removed "movies". I still have all the movie files on my hard drive but how do I put the name of that category back into Finder? At the moment, I can only find those things through "spotlight."

I've just edited this reply, to say the Sidebar preference in the Finder
does not appear to change the area you mention losing the Movie icon
from; so I wonder if there is a default preference that could be restored
by removing a .plist; yet I am not sure where to look to find said item.
Thought I had an idea, and after checking further, that was not the case.
And rather than post a nearly empty post (it won't let me do that once I
edit, or time out in a post) I am noting this.
Not sure if you can drag an item back into that Sidebar; or if a keyboard
command would need to be used while dragging with the mouse.
I've seldom used the sidebar in the User account to navigate anywhere;
in part due to never using the User account that way in any OS X so far.
From what I recall having read, you should be able to drag iMovie into
that Sidebar to get the equivalent of an alias restored back into it.

Exchange 2013 category view always in "expand all" mode

Hi all,
having issues with mailboxes that have been migrated to Exchange 2013.If in category view and choose collapse all,then expand just a few,go to another folder/inbox then back all categories are expanded.Seems like Outlook (2010 and 2013) doesnt remember it.
Checked in view settings - group by - expand/collapse default is set to As last viewed.
This happens to all mailboxes exept those mailboxes that are on Exchange 2010.
Exchange 2010 sp3 cu6 had an update that fixes categoryview not updated,but cant find any for Exchange 2013.
Since the update is on server,i guess this can be changed on serverside settings in Exchange 2013?
Our workaround atm is to ask users to open additional mailbox in new window,but this doesnt work well for users with 1 screen.
Are there any fix for this?

There is no related category view settings in Exchange server side. I also have tested in my Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013 with two test accounts: one for Exchange 2010 SP3 account and one for Exchange 2013 CU1 account.
Both these two accouns are working fine in . I set my Inbox folder in category view and collapse all colors except one expanded. I go to other folders(Deleted Items folder and Drafts) then go back to Inbox folder, the view is the same as last viewed without
expanding all colors. However, if I restart Outlook, the colors would be all expanded in Inbox folder.
Please make sure your Outlook is the latest version and start Outlook by running Outlook /cleanviews to restore default Outlook view to have a try.

I tried to use the attached command through TERMINAL :
sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db "DELETE from apps WHERE title='Help';" && killall Dock
sqlite3: Error: too many options: "DELETE from apps WHERE title='Help';"
Use -help for a list of options.
But i didn't work as I got the above error message.

I'm in the same boat as you -- except that I manage both a school lab (volunteer job) and macs in the enterprise (pay job). What I think we need is the Education Volume Purchasing Program

Unfortunately this all seems a little rough around the edges -- for example, I have found updates for AppStore apps on the support.apple.com updates download site, but then when I install them via ARD they don't actually update the software. (The AppStore icons still show as needing the updates, and the version info reports the old version.) The documentation is also vague about which AppleID to use in which circumstance. I think they just haven't finished thinking through the implications of the various procedures and policies upon the various kinds of customers. When we deployed Mountain Lion on the school lab, we made an install usb and went around and installed it on each computer -- and it appears that you are on the honor system as far as paying for all of the licenses that you install. We did! But they appear to have no way to enforce it.
So far, I have only deployed 9 Lion macs in my day job, and our "solution" to the AppStore showing updates problem has been to drag the AppStore icon off of the users' docks so they don't see them!

In Snow Leopard at least, you can do this by in the Finder going to the Finder menu, selecting Preferences, then clicking on the Sidebar icon at the top, and then ticking (re-enabling) the option to show the Search for Today entry.

How to add custom columns to the list view in Finder

Hi,
I'm looking for a way to view additional file details in the list view in Finder, for example audio bit rate, so I don't have to do "Get Info" for each file separately. I couldn't find a way to add columns other than the ones listed on the view options dialog.
Can anyone help me find a way to do it?

Have you checked the Help menu for what you want to do? I found this in Apple support - List View Options

view application pages - view forms views and application pages. enumerate lists, if we disable this permission in sharepoint then user gets blocked from getting into application pages which is good. But now I have few list view web parts on a page and user
is not able to see those reports based on view. It shows working on it. As soon as I enable view application pages permission it works.

Hi Amit,
SharePoint has a feature called “ViewFormPagesLockDown” at site collection scope. After enabling the feature, all groups / users not having the “View Application Pages” permission will not be able to navigate to pages like “_layouts/viewlsts.aspx”
or “pages/forms/allitems.aspx”.
So, for your issue, please disable the ViewFormPagesLockDown feature via PowerShell command:
$lockdownFeature = get-spfeature viewformpageslockdown
disable-spfeature $lockdownFeature -url [the URL of your site]

Has anyone else been unable to click [open] a document folder while in the column view in finder?

Since I have downloaded Mavericks, I am unable to open any document folder in the column view in finder. When i go to any other view such as cover flow or list, they open. But when it is in the column view, I am unable to click any folder - or any document for that matter. Can anyone help or atleast tell me I'm not the only one?

okay i figured it out. for some reason i had to go to the settings menu and click arrange by name and it automaticaly fixed it. it was weird all of the names were gray, and the color tags were to the left of the folder titles. i hope this helps if any of you had that problem too.

Icon view in Finder windows do not autowrap

I am using 10.5.1 on a 17" MBP 2.16 ghz.
Since installing Leopard, Icon view in Finder windows do not autowrap and Finder windows do not always remember their display preferences.
The Trash auto-wraps (the icons spread to take up the entire window if it is enlarged) But Opening a Folder in my default list view and switching to Icon view and then enarging the window only shows icons in the original window width. EG, If it were 3 colums of icons, it stays 3 columns of icons unless I use Clean Up TWICE and then I get 10 columns of icons which will wrap.
Is this a Leopard BUG or a local problem. Any suggestions on fixing it?

Yeh - though I use cmd-J which I have used since it appeared, 10.1?
But I just solved my problem. In my use as defaults selection, I had Snap to Grid selected in the arrange by pop-up rather than by Name.
Selecting Name and clicking on Use as Defaults makes things work as expected.

Missing sub-folders in List View within Finder

I seem to be randomly missing the sub-folder icon from List view within finder.
Not only is the icon missing but the functionality has gone too.
Anyone else having this problem in Lion?

Strange view in Finder...

Hello everyone,
I do not know how it happen, but i've got this view in Finder.
And it was not possible to return it back by swiping the view by 2fingers swipe, and other options like changing the view didn't work until i closed the current finder window and opened new one.
Previous actions before it happened were: I was attaching the image file to my web-post.

I tried to find out how it occurs..
Actually it happens when drag and drop picture to some programs in the dock, i tried with Safari.

Thumbnail view in Finder

Is therea thumbnail/preview view in Finder. I found the column view which will preview a selected document. I'm looking for a view that will display thumbnail previews of all documents in a folder, just by viewing the folder.

If there are images such as Jpegs you can usually view them in Icon mode (right of the column view on the top nav bar). If you need them to be bigger go to the
Finder menu: --> View --> Show View options (apple + J) --> Icon Size.
Just remember that all of your icons will be enlarged. And you will have to do the reverse (also in the main finder window) to change them back.
