Application comparisons

Recently added Mini with 10.6.8 and applications are unfamiliar are Front Row, Photo Booth, Microsoft Silverlight, Time Machine.
Programs used in 10.4.11 that I'd like equivalents for but not sure whether or not will work in 10.6.8
any suggestions appreciated
Adobe Photoshop Elements 3
Apple Works
Design Pro
Final Vinyl
iPhoto
Kodak EasyShare.app
Skype
Snapz ProX
toast 7 titanium
Wiretap pro

Why don't you look for recent versions at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads. Or visit the developers' sites for upgrades.
There is no equivalent replacement for AppleWorks. Apple now has Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. They may be purchased and downloaded from the App Store.

  • Looking for volunteers to write application comparison articles

There are a number of "what's the best?", "easiest to configure", and "lightest", questions that come up frequently in the forums: Image viewer, PDF/document viewer, tiling window manager, floating window manager, desktop environment, text editor, IDE, web browser, terminal emulator, ETC. And while there's very good documentation on some of the individual pieces in the wiki, there isn't as much on comparisons between them.
In order to help keep the forums from an endless cycle of repetition, we're looking for volunteers to add some application comparison articles to the wiki. The entries don't need to be comprehensive on individual programs, and there should be every attempt made to not unnecessarily duplicate what's already been written. Basic information on things like keyboard friendliness, lightness, text and/or graphic mode, and the like is encouraged though.
We'd like to use this page as the starting point:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Common_Apps
Don't use it for the comparisons themselves, but put a link to the articles under the correct category. The page is already good as it is, although it needs both more entries and to be linked to in the Archwiki Table of Contents for higher visibility (please).
Of course the articles are not for flame wars or opinions. It's a place where users can go to get a good general view of how apps stack up against each other.
Report back any progress made here.

There's going to some gray areas, but most it falls into categories. For instance, having separate pages for IDE and text editors is probably silly. Vim is both a text editor and an IDE depending on how it's set up. So is Geany, SciTE, Texmaker, Emacs, ETC. Putting them all together makes sense.
The two categories of window managers (tiling and floating), as well as DE deserve their own pages. What do you do with E17 then? It's as much a DE as it is a WM. If ended up in the floating WM page, as well as the DE page, that'd be fine. And no, it's tiling module doesn't make it a tiling WM.
PDF viewers and document viewers should probably be lumped together because almost all document viewers can view PDF files. Image viewers should get their own page. Same with terminal emulators.
Stuff like GIMP, Inkscape, and Blender probably don't need a comparison page. Even though other stuff can duplicate parts of their functionality, they're pretty much special programs in the Linux world.
Why three pages for WM/DEs ? Put them all in one page, but separate tables or whatever.

  • Planning 11.1.1.3 application comparison, and some BR questions

    1) Does anyone know how to compare 2 versions of the same Classic 11.1.1.3 Planning apps? Hiearchies, forms? Lets say, I have QA and DEV versions, and I want to see if they are in sync/identical? I remember that Ver 9 had Manage Models option in Administration menu that with some tricking was doing comparison of the two models (their file xtracts), but can't find anything like that in v 11.
    2) Anyone knows the way to easily export the code of BRs into a file? The export XML doesn't always have the readable code in it, so its not reliable. Any suggestions?
    3) Speaking of BRs, I've realised that in order to re-import BRs using XML export-import, I need first to delete all (to-be-reimported) BRs form my target server. Doing it one by one in EAS can be time consuming. Any easier way to delete BRs in bulks?
    Thanks,
    smilo

Deleting classic business rules has always been a pain, if only they developed a multi select, well it won't happen now because calc mangler is around.

I am trying to upgrade an APEX 2.2 installation on 10.2.0.2 Enterprise Edition on SLES-10 with 400MB shared_pool and 1 GB sga_target. • We're changing our name!

    From www.archlinux.org
    We're changing our name!
After 5 years of being called Arch Linux and 5 years of people confusing us with Ark Linux, we've finally come up with a solution. We've spent the last few months talking to the Ark Linux people to come up with a solution that's beneficial for both distributions. Today, we are happy to announce a name change for Arch Linux. ...
    Ha ha ha! Very funny...

Man I think I was one of the first who was duped by this..  Around 1:20 am EST alunnd (tray notifier for arch news and updates) tells me there's new news so I head over to the homepage and just about fell off my chair!  I was soooo infuriated that I immediately fired up my IRC client, jumped into #archlinux, I was ready to kick ass and take names!!  In the process I upset quite a few people,  here's a copy of the whole ordeal..  Notice how they first thought I was crazy, telling that Ark is a different distro LOL!  Notice the topic!
(edited for length, my nick is nd3 on irc)

  • The Comparison of IIS on Windows Server 2012 R2 and Websphere application Server on R6 or AS400

Customer is looking for the internet application solution, and they would like to know the difference/ comparison of IIS on Windows Server and WAS on Linux.  I know it's hard to answer, but is there any data/document/information so that we could convince
customer to use IIS instead of WAS on R6/AS400?

    Hi,
I could not say which one is better.
The advantage of IIS, you could refer to:
    http://www.microsoft.com/web/platform/server.aspx
    Similar thread has been discussed:
    Windows/.NET/ASP.NET/IIS/SQL Server vs. Linux/WebSphere/Java/Apache/Oracle information

Meanwhile, i think you could ask in IIS forums:

  • Comparison of application server

    Hello,
Can I get document comparisons of java application servers? I need performance comparison and pros and cons of following Application Servers
    1) Oracle Application Server
    2)BEA Weblogic (Oracle WebLogic)
    3)Tomcat
    4)Jboss
    5)Resin

    Hi,
Oracle Instant Portal is an out-of-the-box portal application built on top of OracleAS Portal. Although Oracle Instant Portal does feature a very different editing experience to pages built directly in OracleAS Portal, it is built using the same underlying components. Each instant portal consists of an OracleAS Portal Page group, set of pages, templates, navigation pages, custom item types and portlets.
Oracle Instant Portal does not support all the features of the flexible and powerful native OracleAS Portal product.

  • Web Application Server Comparison

    Hello,
    can anybody help me?
I search information about advantages and disadvantages of SAP Web Application Server compared to competitor servers. Kind of detailed comparison.
    Thank you

    Hi
Here this one can help you out to clear the ideas for SAP Web Application Server.
    https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/e1515a37-0301-0010-b2bb-99780cb4cafa
    Some more documents for you:
Note 709038 - summarizes both the advantages and limitations of the Integrated ITS.
If you can clarify what do you mean by "Competitor Server" then I can help you out more elaboratly.

  • Product Comparison Application

    Hi All,
I attended an Abobe 'Fully Loaded Tour' today and during the
Flash session, the presenter showed an application - in this case
on a digital camera site where thumbnails of all cameras were
initially shown. The user could then either move sliders or enter
values directly, such as price range, mega pixels, card type etc
and as these were chosen, the number of images (and therefore
products) decreased or increased. A very effective product locator.
I wonder if anyone has built anything similar? We develop a
lot of e-commerce systems where data is stored in Access or SQL
Server etc and thumbnails/detail images are available. What would
be required is the flash interface and the admin interface to
populate the flash application from the database.
If anyone would be kind enough to point us in the direction
of where to start, it would be much appreciated.
    Best wishes
    Dave

    I think it should work,
If it doesn't work, enable logdebug, It will help u to trace the problem.

  • Strings comparison problem (wap application), please try to help me!!

    hello buddies!!
Well , I'm having a problem in my WAP application.
My wap application is very simple and consist a
authentication of a form (name and password). That is, geting the
the enties from the form and compare with the data from
the database. The problem is: when i compare
the String from the form with the String from the
database the result is always the same "false". I have displayed
the database and form string on the next card and
they are ,indeed, the same, so i don't know what's happening.
    why the method
    public boolean matchName(String name){
        if(name == databaseName)
            return true;
        return false;
}is always returning false even though on the next card
    with :
    out.write("<p>name = "+name+"</br>databaseName = "+databaseName)it displays :
        name = Marcos
databaseName = Marcos I have maden tests with the connection, i can display a list from
the same database, that is the only problem So, if you have any
suggestion, please let me know, thanks very much!!

    hi :-)
    try this:
    if(name.equals(databaseName))regards,

  • Custom version comparison under the new application udpater

    Hi,
With the new versionNumber syntax introduced in Air 2.5, is the isNewerVersionFunction field still supported and if so, is it here to stay?

As Léonie noted the error should never happen regardless of what you or Aperture do. So it is a bug in the code.
The big question is is it repeatable. If it is it makes the coders job a lot easier to try and fix it. It it was transient then there would not be much to go on.
My suggestion is to wait for the repair to finish and see if you  can reproduce the crash. In either case you should file a bug report. Let them know if it is reproducible and hopefully they will take if from there,
Travelling now and for the next week or so. email me if you have any other questions. Checking email more often then checking here.
    good luck

  • SSO SDK Java Sample Application

I have configured the sample application (servlet-based), shown in SSO SDK Developer guide.
I followed all the steps very carefully. When I try to access the partner application, it redirect me to
the login form of the Login Server, and then loop between the sign-on URL and the requested URL.
It seems that the cookie with the user name is lost during redirection. The readme file refers that in a case like this I should check the value of the application cookie domain.
I am running the sample in a single pc environment and my server name is localhost. Which is the right value for the application cookie domain (localhost, .localhost ?????).
In addition, my cookie path value is "/".
    Thanks in advance.

This problem is their in the early version of SDK.
The latest version has correct comparison with null

  • SSO PL/SQL Sample Application Error

    Hi,
I've tried the PL/SQL SSO demo application located in the PDK
    October release.
    Symptom:
The sample application shows the success page, even the user is
not authenticated by the Login Server.
    Cause:
There's a code line in the SAMPLE_SSO_PAPP package to decide if
the l_user_info value is null. The original code line is:
    IF l_user_info = NULL THEN
    It's nonsense, of course.
We all know that in NULL arithmetics it always evaluates false.
    Workaround:
You should correct the comparison to:
    IF l_user_info IS NULL
    It will be much better...

This problem is their in the early version of SDK.
The latest version has correct comparison with null

  • How to get a list of every application on my computer?

I'm trying to figure out how to get a list of every application on my computer using applescript. I know it is possible for the system to do this, as evidenced by the dialog you get when you use the "choose application" function. Other examples are doing a spotlight search for "kind:app" or programs like Namely or QuickSilver.
Is there a way to do this in applescript? The only solution I've come up with so far is to use the command:
<pre>set everyapplicationaliases to choose application as alias with multiple selections allowed</pre>
and manually select all on the resulting dialog. I can then take the results and go from there, however there are a few significant problems with this approach.
    1. It requires user interaction. (I have an idea for some future applications that could use this functionality if it can be done without user input.)
    2. It's horribly slow. As a test run I choose all the applications from the dialog, extracted some basic info and put the result on the clipboard. It took a couple of minutes to complete this relatively basic task. In comparison, running the aforementioned spotlight search took maybe ten seconds.
    Thanks in advance!
    best,
    peter

For these specific queries my results are...
set appList to paragraphs of (do shell script "mdfind \"(kMDItemKind = 'application'c) || (kMDItemKind = 'widget'c)\"")
    3082
    set appList to paragraphs of (do shell script "mdfind \"(kMDItemKind = 'Application'c) || (kMDItemKind = 'Widget'c) ||
    ((kMDItemContentTypeTree = 'com.apple.application') && (kMDItemContentType != com.apple.mail.emlx) && (kMDItemContentType != public.vcard))\"")
    3115
I think I finally found some numbers that make sense!
When I search for Kind:Application by the Command+F method in the Finder, I get a total of 2521 items, of which 2477 are "Applications" and 44 are "Other".
(Just by eyeballing it, "Other" seems to include some Classic Apps and some .bundle files.)
The total # found by this method (2521) plus the number of Widgets found using mdfind (318) equals the number of total number of items found by spotlight (2839).
I also noticed that these numbers almost equal the spotlight number:
    mdfind results for kMDItemKind:
    Widgets: 318
    Applications: 1684
    Classic*: 795
    and
    Command+F "Other" items: 44
    3181684+79544 = 2841
It may be a fluke that this is so close to the 2839 spotlight gives, or maybe there's an overlap somewhere...
Tying this back into my initial question, it seems like the original mdfind command for Applications is probably the best answer for what I was looking for,
since I wasn't really thinking about Classic apps and Widgets anyway.
