Application downloads open in Textedit. How do I fix this?

Have a refurbished Macbook, unsure of version year, OS X, 10.6.8
I'm currently involved in college courses where I need to use notepad++ for mac. But everytime I download it or other applications they keep opening up with Text edit, of course text edit cannot decipher these apps and I don't know how to correct this issue. I'm not familiar with applications and how they open or with what additional apps they will open up with. Thanks for all help and suggestions provided.

Notepad++ is a Windows program - it won't run on a Mac and that's why the program opens in Text Edit instead. Your Mac doesn't know what to do with the file.
You need to talk to your professor to see if there's a Mac program you can use instead.
If there are other programs that aren't working for you, please provide the names and we can try to help figure out if there are Mac versions available.

Go into FF Preferences & set it to be your default browser. This way when you click on an email link in Chrome, FF will open.

Is this a one-off or a general problem? If a one-off, is it a link to a web page or something else? If not a web page, try control-clicking on it and choosing to download the linked file. This will at least access the file though it might be to something you don't have an application to open with. If you do this, what sort of file do you get? - select it and hit command-i to get information on it.

Please triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing the key combination command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear below what you entered. You can then quit Terminal. Test.

You mean the Apple Mail app? Updated through software Update in the Apple Menu?.
Or maybe you downloaded Mail from another source?

Quit the mail app completely and restart the iPad. Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the task bar will appear with all of your recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar. Restart the iPad.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
It that doesn't work - try this .... Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

Is the phone displaying the connect to iTunes picture on the screen instead of the normal unlock. If so, something may have crashed (big-time) resulting in a re-set.
Is there any chance that someone else is signed into iTunes on the computer at the moment rather than your normal iTunes account? That may cause this as well.
At this stage, you could try to manually back it up first (which would be a very good idea), but it sounds like you don't have much choice other than to restore or set it up as new.
Has it done this repeatedly? or is this the first time you've seen this?
