Application/Folder access - is it only inclusionary?

I recently setup user management with Leopard Server (MCX records) and have had alot of success. However, I only want to restrict a couple of applications in OS X. Seems Tiger clients this works fine (under Preferences => Applications => Legacy), but in Leopard I would have to list every app I want to allow?
Is there anyway to set an exclusionary policy for Leopard clients?

Sorry, just realized this is in the 10.4 and earlier forum. Apple really needs to make those section headers a little more prominent.

User only application Folder - Dockulicious

I just noticed there is no application folder for just the user. Can I just set one up and place applications in it that only I have access to. Will this effect how the program performs? I was looking at the Dockulicious Docks apps which is really cool to change the dock. But I want to let each individual user set their own type dock.

With a few exceptions, applications can go anywhere in the file system and run just fine. The most notable exceptions are Apple's own apps, and the need to have them in the main "Applications" folder is related to the ability to update them when needed. If I am not mistaken, some recent updates have addressed this issue, but it is still a good idea to keep them where they belong.
For your own third-party apps, you can create a folder anywhere in your own HOME folder, and place them there. If you want them in your Dock, just drag them there from wherever you place them.

I have a TXT file in my application folder.. I have not added it into the resource.. How can I access this file. I do not want to add this file to resource.

I don't think i migrated anything over, i had a bit of trouble restoring my accoun from a backup and never actually did.
My time mechine backups are currently on a hard drive adn the only way to access the data is to run StellarPhonixMacDataRecovery every time to accesss my data.
But thats an entirely other problem/ storey.
So if i press commmand R when it starts do i need my Mac OX Disc becuse i baught the newest version on MAC OX X from the app store.
The funny thing is , even tho there is a cirlce with a slash all the applictions in question that has this works fine like ical and address book, iuse them all the time.

No access to Enturage application folder after installing Office 2004

I´m not sure this this the right forum, but when I ask Microsoft Enturage people, this is a Mac Tiger security/permission problem, and when I ask Apple people this is a Microsoft Enturage problem, so I don´t know.
So,my issue: I have just reinstalled my HD, using "archive & Install". After the installation, I installed Office 2004. Everything works fine (Word, Excel etc) extept for Enturage, I cannot run the application. The message I get after klicking the icon is:
"You do not have write access to the Enturage applocation folder.To run Enturage you must have the administrative user remove the Identities folder from the application folder."
I have an admin-user. I have not changed user (only me and the admin) during installation.
The reason for reinstalling my Mac was solely because of Enturage-problems, and now, after all this effort, it will still not work! This can make a person go insane!
I am not a very technical person, and will be very greatful for all help!

Did you shut down the database before moving files?I didn't move any files, I just copied some files to the other node.
Can you connect in sqlplus?Yes that was possible. I also had a connection to the database using TOAD.
After looking for the problem together with a colleague I've found out that I had to add some more listening addresses. The problem was that my nodes node1 and node2 have the IPs 10.10.10.2 and 10.10.10.3 but the virtual server of the cluster which forms the database oracledb for the clients runs on 10.10.10.103. So there was the name for e.g. node1 in the configuration files but also the IP-address 10.10.10.103 which the system couldn't resolve. After adding all possibilities using the Net Manager and after restarting the services it worked fine. At least until now. I haven't tried everything yet... I will go on tomorrow... thx so far.

I've already done that several times. It only changes the admin password, my problem is I can't change the Keychain password, but since i can't log in without it I don't know how to change it.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then easiest is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.
Download a new copy of the Firefox program and save the disk image (dmg) file to the desktop

* Trash the current Firefox application to do a clean (re-)install
* Install the new version that you have downloaded
Your profile data is stored elsewhere in the Firefox Profile Folder, so you won't lose your bookmarks and other personal data if you uninstall and (re)install Firefox.

How do I stop extra windows or programs from opening automatically when I access my Applications folder via Finder?

Each time I access my Applications folder via Finder, a bunch of ejectable windows or previously downloaded programs open up on the desktop. I have ejected each one or placed it in the trash, but it still happens. How do I stop this from happening?

I asked the same question on Yahoo! Answers, and I was advised to reinstall Firefox, which I have just done (with version 3.6.8). The problem seems to be solved. Prior to doing this, I attempted to uninstall my previous version, but Control Panel wouldn't let me do this, nor would Windows Explorer allow me to send the whole Mozilla Firefox folder to the Recycle Bin. I went to Plan C, which was to delete all the subfolders in the main folder, followed by the leftover files, and finally empty the Recycle bin. Then I used Internet Explorer to download the newer version of Firefox, and installed it. No more extra home pages, so far.

Backup application folder only

Hi first thanks for read my quetion. My question is how can I back up only my application folder to a DVD, CD or ipod? can I just copy the app folder in a DVD, CD or ipod, do an erase and install and the drop the app folder from the DVD CD or ipod in the hard drive and the apps will work.

You could drag over the apps, but may also need to drag over relevant preference and application support files as well to make them work as expected. Best to backup as much as possible (ideally a clone) to a backup drive first, then you can drag over files as required without losing anything vital!

Access the application folder by HTTP

Hi,
I did an application here to record the user's webcam and store an .FLV at my applications folder. That's ok.
But I want to retrive this .FLV using HTTP mode, to load the .FLV progressively, not by streaming. Got it?
For example, if I record a user webcam called "myWebcam":
myVideoClass.load("http://localhost/applications/my_app/myWe bcam.flv");
Using http (progressively), not rtmpt (streaming).
There is some way to do that? Or to move the file from applications folder to webroot?

I think at the very least you'd need and http server running on your machine to do this, and also probably to copy the flv into a path the server can get to.

Application security /access by only designated users

I have multiple application in a schema. A end user of one application can access all the other applications of the same schema by just changing the application ID in the URL, How can I prevent it.

App opens then closes immediately, but only when in Applications folder

I have an app called Cyberduck, a freeware SSH client.
I put it in my Applications folder, and opened it, but it bounced a few times on the Dock, then closed. I tried again, keeps happening, every time.
What's weird is if I move it out of my Applications folder, into, say, my Downloads folder or the Applications folder on my Home directory, it opens and works just fine.
As soon as I move it back to Applications and try open it, same problem again!
Any ideas?

With Cyberduck not running, go into the "Library" -> "Preferences" folder (located under your home folder) and delete the .plist file for cyberduck (I think the name is ch.sudo.cyberduck.plist). You can either drag it to trash, or drag it to any location outside the ~/Libarary/Preferences folder -- such as the Desktop. Then start Cyberduck. Moving or deleting the .plist file will force it to create a fresh default plist for that application (as if it were a newly installed application.)
