Application Folder Icon reverts to original Icon after Restart/Logout...

My custom icon for the applications folder in the Finder window sidebar reverts back to the original icon (pencil, ruler, paintbrush) after I restart/logout. In the "Get Info" pane of the applcation folder it shows the custom icon, but the icon in the sidebar displays the original! I have changed all my other icons in the sidebar and they have retained their custom icons, but Applications is the only one being stubborn.
I have searched the forums, and found an article where it says to log in as root user and then change it, but i did that and the icon still went bact to the original.
If anyone knows how to change it for good please help me.
Thanks.

The icns file you want is here:
"/System/Library/CoreServices/CoreTypes.bundle/Contents/Resources/ToolbarAppsFol derIcon.icns"
You'll need to do a Show Package Contents on CoreTypes.bundle to get there. Drag the icns file to your desktop--it will copy rather than move. You'll discover that it is much smaller than normal icons: only 32x32 pixels.
You'll need a program to allow you to create icns files. Iconographer is nice. I believe it has a free trial period.
Create your own icns icon and save it with the same name as the original.
Next you need to use Terminal. You'll rename the original with a mv command, then do a sudo copy of your version into the above Resources folder.
Still want to try?

  • Adobe reader 11 takes over application folder icon in Mac OSX 10.8.2

After installation of the adobe reader 11 on Apple Mac OSX 10.8.2 the reader icon replaces the standard Apple application folder icon. It is very annoying. The reader works more or less ok.
I see in the adobe reader forum search that similar errors happen in windows 7 for years now and this behavior on Mac follows the pattern of lack of basic testing of the application before releasing it to the public.

  • Application folder icon

The Application folder icon used to be the default one.  But after I installed Adobe Reader, the Adobe icon appears on top of the default in the dock.  When I open the App folder and check Get Info, the icon shown there is the default one.  How do I remove the Adobe icon from appearing on top of the default Application icon?  Thanks.

Control-click its Dock icon and change the options as desired.

  • Application folder icon in the Dock has a thick red bar

The application folder icon in the Dock has a thick red bar across the top back. What does this mean? Assuming red is a negative indicator, how do I fix the issue?
    Thank you.

    Problem solved.
It was the top of a red icon in the folder (Adobe of course). Found this out by arranging by kind rather then name.
Feeling kind of red (faced) myself at this point.

Log in as root. Change the icon. Log out and log back into your "normal" account.

  • Application Folder Icon Arrangement

After updating to 10.4.10, my arrangement of my icons in the application folder always jumbles after a restart. I have renamed the finder preferences file, created a new finder preference file...still experiencing the "jumbled" look after restarting.
This is a nusance because I have to rearrange the icons in the folder after each restart.
Anyone else experience this? Any recommendations to fix this small issue?

Thanks for the quick reply Kappy. Unfortunately the icon arrangement did not keep. I rebooted and the icons were out of tilt again. I immediately check the settings in the view options..."snap to grid" was still selected...
At least I can say that I can replicate the problem...the culprit icons always seem to be Popcorn, Turbo Tax Premier 2005 Folder...they always end up on top with an additional blank space.

  • Flashing folder icon after Mac mini has been sitting for a few hours

I leave my Mac mini running at time when I leave the office to let it install an update or just cause I forget to close it all down. When I come in the next morning, I have a flashing folder icon waiting for me.
Every single post on the forums talk about this issue at startup. This isn't the case for me; It didn't get shut down. A simple reboot solves it but still an annoying occurrence.

  • No more special folder icon after moved My Documents to network

    Hi,
I am on W7 Pro SP1 64bit in workgroup mode. Recently I moved (or folder redirection) the Documents (aka My Documents), My Pictures and few others user folders (those user folders in \Users\<User_Name>\<folder_name>) to a network share hosted
by a non-Windows NAS. At the same time, Offline Files ("Always Available Offline") feature was turned on for those folders. Everything works fine but I no longer get the unique folder icon for each of these said folders. These folders used to be like this...
but now they become like this...
i went to Properties but "Choose Folder Icon" button is not available...
when i unhide hidden and system protected files, i could see the desktop.ini is there.
anyone know how can i restore the folder icons?
any help is highly appreciated! TQVM in advance!
    TQ! Jacko

    Hi,
As you can see, these icons indicate that these folders are offline files, based on my research, this is by design so as to we can know what files are offline files.
    Have a nice day.

  • IMac Bondi Blue flashes folder icon after OS X freeze

I have a problem with one of my iMacs. Just this morning, I used my iMac Bondi Blue with 256 megs of RAM, 20GB HD, and and with OS X Panther 10.3.9 installed. I was copying some files off of a thumbdrive, then all of a sudden, the mouse cursor turned into a "pinwheel" saying that it was busy, but I couldn't click, or open anything. The mouse could move, but it was not doing anything. I waited for about three minutes and turned it off buy unplugging it and plugging it back in. I turned it on, and all I got when I did was the folder icon with the Finder on it switching to a question mark. Any ideas?

Use your OS CD. Boot from it and see if the Disk Utility can find the hard drive.
What you describe is pretty typical of a hard drive failure. The read/write arm seizes up and the drive ist kaput, just like that!
If you can see the drive with the utility, you may need to reinstall the OS (Archive and Install).

  • Persistent Flashing Question Mark Folder Icon, after Repair & Rebuild-THX!

    Hello All,
Thank you in advance for any insights.
For the past week, one/two days after a force re-boot, my Quicksilver Mac (OSX 10.4.11 and OS 9 Classic) starts up with the dreaded flashing question mark folder.
The start up disk has always been on "Mac OS X, 10.4.11 on main stuff" ("main stuff" is the name of the hard drive.)
The first time, I ran DiskWarrior and rebuilt the hard drive, which is kind of new as it was replaced in April 2009. Then I ran OnyX and got a clean bill of health. The Mac was shut down at the end of the day as is my habit via turning off the power strip.
If it helps, here's part of the DiskWarrior report:
    • 13 files had a directory entry with an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired.
    • 340 files had a damaged extended attribute that was repaired.
    • 3 folders had a directory entry with an incorrect custom icon flag that was repaired.
    • Incorrect values in the Volume Information were repaired.
    Disk Information:
    Files: 370,719
    Folders: 85,161
    Free Space: 92.55 GB
    Format: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    Block Size: 4 K
    Disk Sectors: 268,171,472
    Media: WDC WD5000AAKB-00H8A0
The next day, the flashing question mark folder reappeared. This time I used the original system installer CD (labeled Power Mac G4 OS X Install). Disk Utility made its repairs. And this time, the computer was put to sleep instead.
In the morning, it woke up, the wireless optical mouse worked for a few seconds, the hard drive is humming along then all of a sudden the arrow (mouse) froze and none of the keys on the keyboard functioned.
After some research, I deleted the energy saver preference (powermanager.list?) and ran Disk Utility again. And again, I shut down b/c I wasn't going to use the Mac for a day or two.
This afternoon, the pesky icon reappeared at start up. At first Disk Utility didn't see the hard drive then I restarted and the hard drive was selectable though not mounted. It was repaired and verified yet once again. Btw, when I did hard drive test, the message says something to the effect that it appears to be working properly.
My question is, might anyone know what's wrong? I've been backing up after every use and I have a laptop. But I love working on the desktop and if this issue can be fixed, that would be perfect.
As an aside, I've read that I should do a clean install. Would doing a clean install mean I need to re-install OS 9 as well as all other all other software programs-Adobe Creative Suite, Quickbooks, Verizon DSL, printer drivers etc.?
One final question, can I continue to boot up from the CD, repair then restart or will I damage the computer? Once it restart, everything seems to work normally and well.
Many, many thanks for reading and any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Have a wonderful weekend.
    Sam

Disk damage can also affect the startup sequence, but I think what you have already done should have repaired any disk damage, or given you more information.
Once you have ruled out Disk damage, you get the flashing question mark when your Mac cannot find:
    • the preferred operating System
    • of the preferred version
    • on the preferred startup drive.
All these items are stored in the parameter RAM, backed up by a 3.6 volt, non-recharging 1/2-AA size battery that lasts three years or so, unless you turn off all power at night.
If you cannot remember when you last changed that battery, now is a good time. Be sure to reset the PMU/PRAM after installing the new battery.

  • Applications Folder Icon position

I have 10.5.6 and just recently, every time I open my applications window the folders are arranged alphabetically. I move them so that they are in the order I want, then next time I start up they are back to alphabetically listing--anyone know how to lock them in place? Checked View but can't find anything there.

If you are in List View, Column View, or Quick Look View, the folders will be alphabetized. In the Icon View, I selected “None” from the View Options window, moved around the folders, restarted, clicked on the icon view button (I have the default set to open in Column View) and the folders were still there in the out of order places where I had put them.
If yours doesn’t work that way, perhaps if you tried moving the com.apple.finder.plist file from the Macintosh HD/Users/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop and restarted it would help.
If it doesn’t help, you can put the .plist file back in its Preferences folder to replace the newly created .plist file and restore your Finder preferences.

  • Application folder Icons

I have moved certain apps into a folder and called it Tools. Is there a way to change the icon, as the default icon is real poor to say the least. I would like ones that are relating to what is in them.

No, the icon for a folder is automatically generated and cannot be changed. It shows the apps contained within the folder.

  • Don't like the Photoshop application/folder icons - don't match new Dark UI

I don't get the HUGE stroke

You can permanently show all menu items and you can always have Windows float like they used to.
Its just a question of exploring the settings.
Having said that, a lot of the UI "improvements" are very unpopular and it would have been nice (but apparently technically impossible) to have the possibility to revert to the old interface.
