  • Duplicate Applications- PowerPC versions?

After installing 10.4.8 I noticed some duplicate applications. It seems I get two versions of some Apple programs: the regular application and one that reads: Application-Power PC.
This happens with Google Earth, iDVD 6, iMovie HD, iPhoto, iTunes etc.
What gives? Since my G4 is a PowerPC, can I trash the regular application and just keep the PowerPC version?
What's the best way to trash these regular applications and leave the PowerPC version?
    Thanks, Panther

I bought Tiger OS 10.4.6 off the shelf at an Apple Store. Software Automatic updater told me to update to 10.4.8. I did and now I have two versions of some of the apps.
Can I throw the non-PowerPC versions in the trash?
    Thanks

  • PowerPC question when loading a digital copy of a movie

I attempted to upload a digital copy of Monsters, Inc and I get an error reading showing the application PowerPc is not supported.  Is there anything else I can do?

Apparently some DVDs, especially Disney, continued to use a PowerPC app to obtain the digital copy -- SHEESH!
If your MacBook is old enough, you can install Snow Leopard into a partition or external hard drive and boot over to SL and get your digital copy.

  • Can view architecture of Applications with 10.4.4 update

With the new 10.4.4 update, when you select Get Info on an application, you can not view the architecture (Intel, PowerPC) anymore. What's up with that?

Looks like Apple tweaked the interface a bit further. Look in the Kind field up in the General info, and it now shows the architecture there.
For example, what used to be just an "Application" is now an "Application (PowerPC)", or "Application (Universal)" similar to the way Classic applications were referred to as "Application (Classic)".
I suppose it does make more sense that way but it might take getting used to. In any case, it's rather frustrating to see the Finder engineers tweaking this stuff and not getting around to fixing the other glaring bugs in the Ownership and Permissions section of the Inspector window.
    Anyway, hope this helps...

  • Personal Processes: Intel vs PowerPC

Is anyone running with only Intel processes? Have you noticed a difference in performance and stability when compared to having some PowerPC processes as well?
I've managed to reduce my PowerPC background processes to just one - still gathering my verdict on overall improvement...

not sure this is the right forum, but here goes...
i moved everything from my G4 1ghz powerbook to my
new intel macbook using the system migration
    funtion.
    the macbook is really sluggish...
since i migrated applications and all, do i now have
the powerpc version or the intel version, of say,
    itunes, idvd, etc...
i guess the question is on the "universal" apps, are
there 2 different versions for powerpc and intel, or
just one true universal version, and how do i tell
    which version i have ?
    thanks,
    stephen
Use Get Info (Cmd-I) on the application. At the top of the "General" section it will show "Kind: Application (PowerPC)", "Kind: Application (Universal)" or "Kind: Application (Intel)".
Any applications from your old Mac will be PowerPC or Universal depending on the age of the application. e.g. iLife 6 is universal, older iLife is not.
Any application that came installed on your Intel machine should be Universal or Intel.
There is currently only one type of "Universal". It means "PowerPC" and "Intel". If Apple decides to support additional processors they may be more types.
For any PowerPC applications, you should see if the manufacturer has upgraded to Universal versions. They would run faster.
How much memory do you have on the MacBook? PowerPC application have to run via Rosetta and will be slow if you are low on memory.

  • Search settings - default to current folder and "file name" ?

99.9% of the time, when I enter something in the search bar of the Finder window, what I want to do is:
    1. search is the folder that I'm in
    2. search for the "file name", and
    3. then sort the results by "date modified".
    Currently, problem is:
    1. I can only change the search area (which defalts to "This Mac") after the search has begun.
    2. Likewise, the default is "content"
    3. There's not even an OPTION for "date modified". The "Last Opened" option is rarely useful.
    Please help!
    Thanks

The only one who can help us is Apple. Obviously you find this just as ridiculous as everyone else does who actually uses their computer to do things.
While I usually think this kind of sweeping generalization is unjustified, here I do not. Spotlight has great potential, but "ridiculous" describes the implementation perfectly. I'm not terribly upset by the default to search "This Mac" -- it really isn't much of a hassle to have to click the folder button -- but the loss of the ability to choose any folder or group of folders is exactly the kind of "regressive functionality" that should have people flooding feedback with complaints.
Just as ridiculous is the inability to show & sort on any of the metadata columns a normal Finder window offers. And if "Last Opened" is so useful in searches that it is the (unchangeable) default, why isn't it available in any other Finder view?
Plus, does anybody really understand how the "File Name" option works? It rarely seems to make a difference -- I often enter a search phrase, look at the results, then switch to the File Name option & still see files that clearly do not have the search phrase or any part of it in their names.
More: Try a search on Kind "Other" & enter the "Kind" info from a file's Get Info Box. Try "Application (Classic)" & note that it finds any you might have. But try "Application (Universal)" or "Application (PowerPC)" & you get ... nothing. Try just "Application (" & you get all apps. Try "Classic" & once again, any Classic apps show up, but try "Universal" or "PowerPC" & you get nothing. It's the same with many other file kinds -- sometimes the "Get Info" file kind string or some part of it works, sometimes not. Worse, the same is true for the "Kind" info taken directly from Finder windows. Try entering "Plain Text" in the Kind-Other search. I have hundreds of these but the search turns up exactly one, & it isn't even in my Documents folder.
(Before anybody suggests it, yes I have rebuilt the Spotlight index repeatedly, using both the Privacy pane method & Terminal commands, & it makes no difference.)
The point is not to rant but to demonstrate how poorly thought out & unreliable the app remains. I feel the problems are so obvious & widespread that we should not have to use the feedback page to tell Apple about them, but apparently we do. It really is as if it was designed by people that don't have a clue about what a search engine should do or how to integrate it into a user friendly environment.

  • How do i play Sims 2 on a macbook pro?

I've brought Sims 2 which is a MAC game, but when I tried to install it on my macbook, it said the application PowerPC was no longer supported. So, I want to know if there was a way to run the game? e.g. external hard-drive? or by going through windows? Would a mac game work through windows?
If anyone has had this problem and found a solution, i'd be very grateful if they could let me know. Thank you.

PowerPC applications are not supported with OS X Lion 10.7.  Only OS X 10.6 or prior.  That means you can not play that game on your mac.

  • Help! Aperture won't work with Snow Leopard...

I know you will all probably laugh at me because I have just upgraded to Snow Leopard.  The problem is that nobody told me my Aperture wouldn't work anymore! I can't even open it to retrieve my photos...(btw, this is why I was hesitant to upgrade...but I had to because I got the iphone 5 which wouldn't sync with my itunes version and that wouldn't update unless I went to snow leopard...and so on....).
So, the problem is that I need Aperture version 2.0. so I can update that to 2.1.4 and be compatible with Snow Leopard.  I have 1.5.6 and kept it that way because it was working for me and I just basically use Aperture as a photo storage system. I can't find 2.0 anywhere. I can't figure out how to uninstall snow leopard either. I need my photos back asap.
    Any suggestions?
    Thank you in advance,
    Debi

    One more question, debi.
Does your Aperture icon show a circular ring like the ghostbusters? Like below for my CCC?
And is the "Kind" listed as "Application (PowerPC)" when you use "Get Info ⌘I)? That would indicate that your current Aperture version is still a PowerPC application. Then you can still make it run on Snow Leopard. You have to make sure that your Snow Leopard installation includes the Rosetta environment.
Do you have a Snow Leopard install disk? Look into the "Optional Installs" folder on this disk and open the "Optional Installs" package. Proceed as described in the second part of this
    article:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1167117/reinstalling_rosetta.html
If your Aperture 2 version is still a PoerPC app, installing Rosetta should enable you to run the aperture 2 installer from your installation disk and then upgrade to Aperture 2.1.4.

  • New MacBook Pro won't open iPhoto 09

I have a new 15" MacBookPro and cannot open iPhoto. The message reads "You can't open the application iPhoto because it is not supported on this type of Mac." I used Migration Assistant which moved over the applications yesterday -- took over 5 hours and didn't move the documents at all.
After reading in some posts somewhere that iLife '09 needed to be purchased separately, I took out my iLife family pack, and ran the install for it on the new MacBook Pro.
I tried to install iLife Support 9.0.3 but got a message that "This update does not need to be installed. A newer version of this software is already installed." Garageband boots up fine.
There is only one iPhoto application installed and it is version 8.1.2. Says it's an Application (PowerPC)
Is my Mac defective?? Is there an explanation or a fix for this?

Why did you do that? iLife (including iPhoto) comes preinstalled on all new systems - moving iPhoto from another computer is not necessary and does not work
After reading in some posts somewhere that iLife '09 needed to be purchased separately, I took out my iLife family pack, and ran the install for it on the new MacBook Pro.
Did you delete the iPhoto receipts ("your hard drive" ==> library ==> receipts) prior to doing this install?

    Very doubtful
Is there an explanation or a fix for this?
It is possible that the iPhoto application is just fine and it is only your library - to test that depress the option key and launch iPhoto - create a new library and import a few photos into it and test it - if that works then the application is ok - to switch back to the main library you will need to repeat the option - launch.
Once you have the iPhoto application straightened out, It it likely that your iPhoto library did not transfer correctly - Migration assistance does not always do a good job on the iPhoto library - Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Is anyone else's new iMac slower?

    Hi
I have recently upgraded to the new Intel iMac, and, although it has greater specs across the board, it definitely seems slower than my G5 iMac with lesser specs. When switching applications, it's particularly bad - almost like it's sticky. It's a bummer to get a new machine that is slower! I have also heard there is some compatability issue with the Intel stuff. Anyone got any clues?
    Thanks a million.

You have to be aware of the fact that some applications will be running in emulated mode (Rosetta). These are the programs that are written for the old PPC series chips (G3, G4 and G5). You will see a slow down for those applications as its having to emulate the PPC cpu on an Intel cpu. For applications that are written to work with both cpu's (PPC and Intel) the software is refered to as Universal code and its that software where you will see a lot of improvement. It will take time for all software to be rewritten into universal code (and some may never be converted as it will run okay in emulation). Right now all of the core OS X and iLife applications are universal and on my iMac 20 intel machince I can see a big difference in the performance between my old G4 mac.
One item which may cause slow downs is the amount of ram you have, the emulation software Rosetta really likes a lot of ram and I suggest at least 1gig to get good performance with non universal software. You can check if software is universal or PPC by doing a get info on the icon and under the General section you will see at the top the program KIND it will say something like "Application (PowerPC)" or "Application (Universal)"
I havent seen any slowdown when switching applications however the only thing that i have seen be a little slower is when i select the right mouse button it takes a little longer to come up with the menu that it used to on my previous G4 Mac but its not really an issue as its not really that long.
Compatability seems so far to be 100% for me in that everything that I've tried running on it works and that includes the vast majority of my older programs. The main issue you may have is for applications that ran under Classic mode on your G5 as there is no Classic mode on the new Intel macs.
good luck and enjoy your new intel mac. Its a very good machine and I even have it dual booting into Win XP to play the odd game of Battlefield 2 but for everything else (iLife, Surfing, emails) i use Mac os X.

  • App persists in opening as doc, despite rebuilding

An application, known to be Mac OS 9 and Classic-only, opens as a document, with Script Editor as default. (The app itself seems not to blame; runs fine elsewhere; see below. Just for reference, it is Color It! by MicroFrontier. Also runs fine when the machine is rebooted into Mac OS 9.)
I'm aware of many previous discussions of this behavior, and I have taken that advice and repeatedly deleted caches and rebuilt launch services, using Onyx, Cocktail, and also manually as root; also have cleaned other caches, deleted .DS_store files, optimized the system, etc., in many combinations, rebooting immediately each time after the various attempts.
The app remains unusable, with Get Info displaying both "Application (PowerPC)" and "Open with Script Editor" -- both wrong.
I have also completely replaced the app and all of its supporting files; in fact, I have completely replaced the entire Mac OS 9 environment, and the entire folder "Applications (Mac OS 9)" in which this app is contained; no success.
Furthermore, the app is correctly shown as "Application (Classic)" on three other Macs I have, all running the same 10.4.7 and 9.2.2. Also, copying the properly-behaving app from one of these machines to my affected iMac does no good; the replacement copy immediately displays the wrong Get Info as soon as it is accessed on the iMac.
Is there anything else I can try, short of the very painful task of wiping the hard drive and starting over? All other apps, classic or carbon or cocoa, are behaving correctly. Perhaps there is one and only one sequence of rebuilding steps that must be followed exactly? I thought I had tried them all
(By the way, I have also repaired the hard disk volume, using both Disk Utility and DiskWarrior; no problems found.)
    iMac (PowerMac4,5)   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Neil, thank you for the idea:
If the application's name looks like Color It! 2.4.3,
rename it so it is named Color It! with nothing after
the exclamation mark. Having an application's name
contain a period can sometimes confuse Mac OS X.
I can see the logic of this, given the increased role of dot-extensions in filenames. I made the change, immediately deleted caches, etc., and rebooted, and now the app is correctly identified as "Classic." What still remains curious about this is that, on several other Macs with the same OS and software setups, the same app with full name Color It! 4.0.1 is happily launching (in Classic) with no change in its name needed! A mystery...
    Thanks again

  • How to transfer photoshop ELEMENTS v4 onto new mac?

How do i download an old version of photoshop v4 i have on an old computer, onto my new mac?  I have the serial number.

Unfortunately, photoshop elements 4 will not work on os x  10.7.5, because pse 4 was a PowerPC application (powerpc is the type of processor)
and os x 10.7.5 is an intel (processor) mac, that can't use rosseta to run older powerpc applications, like one could on 10.4 thru 10.6 intel macs
Photoshop elements 6,8,9,10,11 and 12 should work fine on os x 10.7.5 lion

  • AppleWorks won't open after SL upgrade.

I installed Snow Leopard recently and have just discovered that I can not open my AppleWorks files! I get error-#1700. I then tried opening the AppleWorks application and it won't open at all. Is there a solution to this problem? I have not found one yet. BTW, I am running 6.2.9.
I am pretty sure I installed Rosetta. Is there a way to check that?
Some files will open, many others will not.

Interesting. Dale says AppleWorks isn't supported in SL, but you're running it fine. Not sure where to go with the info you supplied me regarding the error message. I think Rosetta must be installed, because I have not been asked to install it.
Rosetta in SL isn't automatically installed. Unless you did a custom install to begin with, and included it then, or you've already run something one time and already triggered the install, it's not there yet. Again, if not and if needed, the system will react, so either way you're covered.
To see if Rosetta is installed, use the Finder menu 'Go/Go To Folder...' and use this string/path:
    /usr/libexec/oah
Study the window that opens...if there is an object there with the name of 'translate', Rosetta is already installed.
Caution^^Close that window when done and do not make any changes there!
Another slightly less intrusive method is to simply poke around your applications, locating an older app, then doing a get info...note if 'Kind:' is 'Application (PowerPC)' ...find one that is and run it. If the prompt to install doesn't pop up, then you are good to go.

  • HT200179 Aperture 2 and Lion OS-X incompatibility

Please can anyone tell me why is my aperture 2 does not work any more after an OS X lion install? surely a patch is available - or do i have to buy the 'Aperture 3' upgradeed version?

    ''Classic environment no longer supported.''
Does the icon look like "Ghostbusters" - like above; and does the "Get Info" panel show "Kind: Application (PowerPC)?
Then your Aperture 2 version is still a PowerPC version and cannot run on Lion.  You should have  run Software Update and upgraded to the latest Aperture 2 version ( a universal binary) while you still were running your previous MacOS. On Lion it will be impossible to upgrade a PowerPC program.
Do you have any more applications, that will need upgrading to an universal binary or an Intel Version, or is Aperture the only application that needs updating?
Do you have a clone of your recent MacOS on an external voume? Then you might try to boot your Mac from this external volume in SnowLeopard (or earlier) and upgrade all applications that need upgrading. Then use Migration Assistent to migrate them to Lion. S a last ressort reinstall your prevoius system, update everything, and then reinstall LIon again.
If you cannot go back to your earlier system in some way, you will to buy Aperture 3 from the AppStore. Luckily it is no longer as expensive as the preious Aperture versions used to be.
