Applications and folders on FMS

Hi!
I installed the developer version and now have everything set up and working, But I have a question regarding the application folder. A few other people here have had similar problems but non of the posts I found could answer my question.
I want to organize things in the application folder but I am unable to make it work with subdirectorys to my app folder.
Inside the application folder I have something like this:
applications
    otherAppsFolder
     myAppFolder
          myAppSubFolder
               main.asc
               streams
                    _definst_
                         myMP4video.mov
I can't get this to play:
rtmp://myDomain/myAppFolder/myAppSubFolder/mp4:myMP4video.mov
But if I remove the "MyAppSubFolder" and place its content inside the "myAppFolder" this works:
rtmp://myDomain/myAppFolder/mp4:myMP4video.mov
What can I do to better organize things in subfolders within the applications folder?
Thanks

Hi,
Could you please explain to me how you manage to get your video to play with FMS sever and working for you. You could send your message to [email protected] In my case I do not have server as win 2003 or anything like that, however, I am using Windows Xp Pro IIS Server, FMS Server and the default Apache Server as my servers and I also designed the videoplaylist from Lisa Larson Kelly tutorial which looks good. It will show up and buffer will run none stop but the video and image will not load at all.
Please help me if you know what to do. If any one also knows how i could fix this problem please contact me as well. Every little help is great.
Thanks.
Best regards.
Ody

Restore the latest iPhone backup you made to the iPad.

  • Can time machine be told to selectively backup applications and folders?

I need to perform a backup of the drive so that I can do a complete reinstall, however I cannot see any way to manually backup things like iTunes, it's library and settings, and a selection of installed programs such as say, adium, which has chat transcripts (not limited to that app and probably a bad example)
A reinstall through time machine is not an option, since from what I can see the basic install takes a disk image so the problems I currently have would be restored (self inflicted, deliberately, too long to explain but part of learning thingy)
If it's not possible in Time machine is there an alternative program or even a way to do this manually? I don't mind a little work.
    Thanks!

It doesn't have an option to easily select only specific directories or files. It only has the option to exclude files & directories. (It's function is to backup everything initially, then backup anything that has changed since it's previous backup.)
However, unless your self-inflicted problem is in an issue with something in your user accounts folders, you can bypass restoring it you do a re-install followed by a Time Machine restore.
When you install Snow Leopard, you'll see the "out of the box experience" (the welcome video, followed by the country selection, owner registration questions, etc..) Part of the OOTB is the "Setup Assistant" which will ask if you want to migrate from either another Mac, disk, Time Machine backup, Time Capsule, etc.
If you tell it you DO want to migrate/restore from a Time Machine it will selectively offer a few categories of things to restore. These include user accounts (all or nothing... you can't restore one account but ignore others), applications, and system settings.
This means you could do a re-install, then restore your user accounts -- even your applications if you want, without restoring other parts of the OS (for example if you think your system settings are damaged you can choose not to restore those.)
Lastly... you could opt to restore nothing at all and just re-create a user account. If you right-click on the Time Machine icon down in the dock, one of the options is to "Browse Other Time Machine Disks..." By clicking this you can open a backup and individually decide which files to restore -- being as selective as you wish.

  • Some of my applications and/or folders got corrupted after using Migration Assistant

    Hello,
Had an iMac with Snow Leopard installed (1 single admin user).
Also had a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard installed (1 single admin user).
Got everything transfered to a single brand new MacMini with Lion pre-installed using the following method:
    - Started the new Mac Mini from scratch and used Migration Assistant during setup process to import ALL data from old MacMini (user, applications, settings and other files) using ethernet connection.
    - This went perfectly well with 1 or 2 minor errors regarding 1 or 2 startup items but resolved with erasing and re-installing them.
    - Applied all available Software Updates to get an updated version of Lion (10.7.5)
    - Then launched Migration Assistant from the new Mac Mini to import ALL data from iMac (user, applications, settings and other files)
    - This went well as I got the same message than previous transfer (all data was transferred OK)
    - Also got another message saying some X folder was not compatible with targeted system and same with some CHUD folder.
I finally got my 2 admin users gathered onto the single new Mac Mini in 2 separate admin user sessions.
If an app was already transferred from the old Mini but also installed on the iMac it did not get transferred from the iMac thus keeping the Mac Mini version.
For such apps I have permissions issues and some of the folders used by the 2 different admin users such as /Movies or /Documents are locked depending on which user session is opened.
I tried repairing permissionsusing Disk Utility but with no success.
I also tried to delete and re-install these applications but it did not work.
Last chance was to grant full access attributes to the related folders via their information panel or System Preferences (User & Groups tab) but it did not work either.
Could somebody please explain the background for this issue and how could I solve it?
I am thinking of re-installing Lion from scratch, transfer the old Mac Mini again (ALL data) and then import iMac user but only USER data (not applications and settings). Would it work?
Thanks for any help you could provide,
    François

I was finally able to fix this by using a couple of preference management utilities. Either I missed a key preference file for each app, or there are some hidden preference files, but when I used the prefence management utitilities (such as Preferntial Treatment, PrefEdit, Defaulter, or PlistEdit Pro) I was able to look at the prefs for Firefox and Photoshop CS2 and see where the hostname for the my old G4 was listed. (in the case of Photoshop CS2 it was actually in the list of recently opened files!! I should have noticed that from within Photoshop)
Now that I've removed those entries from preferences both Photoshop and Firefox run without prompting that the old G4 had to mounted.
oh, also... I found that for both Photoshop & Firefox I could actually get them to work without mounting the old G4's root volume - it just took clicking past the pop-ups (about 10 of them for each app) and waiting a long time as it searched around for the next one (maybe about 10 minutes total ... normally I don't have time to waste like that, but I got curious and made the time).
Thank you for your suggestions. as I had suspected, Migration Assistant moved some preferences from the old G4 that had it's hostname embedded and for some reason the apps weren't clearing them out when they were launched on the new machine (again, odd since I didn't have Migration Assistant move the apps from the old G4 to the new G5 - I installed each app on the G5 as a new install (aka: a "clean install") to avoid just this type of problem).
My real thanks are to the authors of the above mentioned preference management utilities.

You are not going to be able to run your old system from the backup on this old computer as the hardware is incompatible.
You need to get a new computer or a refurbished one.

  • Applications and iPhoto Library folders not in backup

My iMac G5 disk failed some time ago and was replaced by a new drive. I had been doing system backups via TM so was not concerned about being able to rebuild the system. However, when the new drive was initialized, I made the mistake of specifying a different account name from the original and doing a clean rebuild from the Leopard DVD. This resulted in not being able to access the TM backups but I got around the problem by creating a new account matching the original.
I was able to retrieve most files from the backup this way, but cannot see any backups of either the Applications folder or the iPhoto library in TM. I have gone back to look at all the old versions but still cannot see either of these folders. It's possible that I had excluded these folders from the backups, but I don't usually do silly things like that. My question is: can I go back through the old backups and examine the TM Prefs in use at the time to see if I had (stupidly) excluded those folders?
I've looked in the System folder and all I can see is a file in System>Library>PreferencePanes>TimeMachine.prefPane which I cannot figure out how to view.
    Thanks for any help/ideas.

Many thanks - problem solved (or at least, diagnosed). I had been looking for that same file and could not find it at first. Now I looked again and found it ok. The TM prefs show that I had, for some reason, excluded both the Applications and iPhoto folders from the backup list. Mea culpa.
I think I had excluded them from the first TM backup in the interests of space saving (I had copied the iPhoto folder to a different volume - later deleted!). Then I made the mistake of not changing the exclusion list when I needed to. It's probably a good idea to visit these prefs regularly to make sure they are what you want and not just left there by forgetfulness.
And also to double-check what's actually getting backed-up after you change them; on occasion the plist gets corrupted and doesn't get changed to agree with what you did. There's either no message, or folks don't see or understand it.
Glad you were able to recover -- most folks aren't.
It's an excellent strategy to have another set of backups of important stuff, and even better, to have it off-site, so you're also protected against fire, flood, theft, direct lightning strike, etc. For most of us, things like photos can be archived to CD/DVD occasionally, and taken to a safe deposit box, relative's house, workplace, etc. Others use a portable external disk, some do some backups via the net.

This article contains the only thing that worked for me.  I also had to sign out of iCloud and uninstall it.  Then I had to delete all files and folders from all of those applications that were under Program Files, Program Files x86, Program Data and Users.  My iPhone 4 will now sync with iTunes both in its USB-connected  mini dock and over Wi-Fi.  It's unfortunate (negligent programming on the part of Apple?) that the upgrade to iTunes 11 did not remove all of those files as part of the upgrade process.

I am having the same issue....Same address for years - same as USPS - I tried 5 times (3 macs and 2 iPhones) and now i have 5 CHARGES for 1.00 each on my credit card. I took the credit card info off so they don't charge me anymore. How can they charge me yet still not allow me to download free updates and say I have an invalid address? I'm sure I will spend weeks or months trying to get a credit out of these incompetent idiots.

  • The way folders, applications, and files open under OS X Yosemite

I have recently come back to Mac after using only Windows for 15 years. I LOVE my new iMac, but am finding one thing extremely annoying.
Whenever I open a folder, application, or file, the contents are displayed as they were when I last closed it. For example, the first item may not be displayed on top (the window or file is scrolled down), a sub-folder may be open so that its contents are displayed as well, etc. I find this PARTICULARLY annoying with iPhoto (I want to start at the top of an album every time I access it).
I would like my folders, applications, and files to open as they do the very first time they are opened EVERY time. Is there any way to make this happen?

You could move them back to the beginning before you close them.

My MacBook Pro 13" says that I have no more memory in my startup disk. I have tried deleting applications, files, folders, and it still says I have low memory. What is taking up all that space?

First -- do the target disk backup.  Somehow get a backup.
You might try booting to Single user mode:  http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1492 and removing the files in the command line.  When you put files in the trash, the space is still used up until the trash is emptied.
using rm command removes it totally.  Just be very careful because you remove the wrong file, and you have to relad the system

I need to check a few other things...
Click on 'Mail' in the upper left corner next to the Apple ()
    Click Preferences
    Click the 'Accounts' tab
Make sure your iCloud account is highlighted in the column on the left.
In the account information section what does it say next to:
    Incoming Mail Server?
    Outgoing Mail Server?
Also, did you use MobileMe before the iCloud?

    1. They’re still there, but hidden.
    2. Open your home folder, choose Show View Options from the Finder’s View menu, and check the box to show the library.

  • Why are there iOS Applications AND mobile Applications folders?

I am cleaning up my hard drive for 2013 and have disovered that my iTunes folder is the largest folder. Good for me.
Within my itunes folder are both an iOS Applications folder and a Mobile Applications folder They both have recent Modifed Dates and there is some .ipa overlap in terms of applications and serial numbers, it seems like the older stuff is in the iOS Applications folder. I own both an iPad and iPhone but cannot seem to fathom any consistency as to which apps go where.
Do I need both of these and if not is there an easy way to resolve the "problem"? (Assuming it really is a problem.)

Interesting, I only have the Mobile Applications folder. If there are any applications that appear in the iOS folder but not in the mobile folder, you can move them over to the mobile folder, and then delete the other one.

I just restored my 13" MBP i5 at the apple store to the newest version of Lion after issues with a previous Time Machine backup from Snow Leopard- this time I created a new account and just ported files and folders, and now MS Office doesn't work.
^^ that's the main problem. Here's the full history.
I bought a new 13" i5 MBP, early 2011 edition. I had an old white Macbook 2.14 ghz core2duo on Snow Leopard. I attempted to port over my time machine backup, but encountered problems in that my User was inaccessible from the new computer after the import finished, and I had to go in and change the root password, etc, and for some reason or another, I couldn't install any programs at all from that administrator's account. By "couldn't" I mean I could install them, but upon installation they would never boot. So, I took it to the apple store and did a clean install from the most up to date Lion OSX. Then, I created a brand new admin account, instead of trying to import the old one, and things seemed great. Then, I just imported my old files from the TM backup, but not any system settings, permissions, or user data. Just my Docs, pics, vids, apps, and itunes stuff.
Here's where things get weird again. I imported this stuff under the name "old", but all of these folders have a red negative sign on them, marking them as restricted. So, from my main admin account, I cannot even peruse these folders. Since I didn't import user data, I can't sign in to the "old" account to change permissions. I already tried to change the permissions from system preferences, but that didn't change anything. And now, for whatever reason, of all the apps that were imported then, MS Office is the only set of apps that does not work. When I click on it, it just says there was a problem and asks if I'd like to send a report to apple. I tried reinstalling it to no avail. I'm an English student, so i really need access to Word. Can anyone help? The Apple store is a major detour for me and would like to fix this issue myself.

Most likely you have Office 2004 which are PPC-only applications and will not work in Lion. Upgrade to Office 2011. Other alternatives are:
Apple's iWork suite (Pages, Numbers, and Keynote.)
Open Office (Office 2007-like suite compatible with OS X.)
    NeoOffice (similar to Open Office.)
LibreOffice (a new direction for the Open Office suite.)

  • Windows 7 won't allow me access to some of my files and folders

I installed a new copy of Windows 7 Professional SP1 on a new PC several months ago. I then restored my documents from a backup made on my old XP system. Ever since installation, I have had problems with Windows denying me access to some of my files
and folders. I have full administrative rights on the machine. The various problems I've had, and steps I've taken to resolve them are:
    1. Try to open a file and get a message telling me I need permission from Steve to open this file. I am Steve.
2.Try to open a file and get a message telling me I don't have permission to open it, but click this button to get permanent permission. I click the button, but still don't have permission.
    3. I then started opening the security settings for individual files and setting myself to have full access, and as the owner. This worked for individual files.
    4. I then tried setting the same security settings for entire folders. This didn't work and didn't improve anything.
    5. I tried setting the security settings so that Administrators owned the files/folders (I am an administrator). This also didn't achieve anything.
    6. After several months and still getting these messages, I got sick of trying to overcome them and decided to apply these security settings to my entire C: drive. I set myself to have full access and to be the owner of the C: root directory and all sub-objects.
    7. I inserted my Windows installation disk and tried to run the System Repair. It told me that System Repair was not compatible with the version of Windows I was running! WTF???
Not only did setting permissions for the entire C: drive not help me, it has made matters a WHOLE lot worse. I now don't have permission to open almost all my files/folders. Most applications I try to run (Word, Excel, etc.) either tell me they can't open
a file or let me open and edit it, then tell me I don't have permission to save to that location. When I press the Send/Receive button in Outlook, it now tells me I don't have permission to perform that action. I've tried going back to a restore point before
I made this change, but that didn't change anything either.
This problem has been driving me insane for months and now my PC is almost completely unusable and I'm considering a disk format and re-install Windows. When I initially installed it, so many problems came up in the first few weeks that I'm very reluctant
to go through this procedure again. I spent hours and hours trawling the web looking for solutions to things that didn't work.
Does anyone have any good news for me? Because as far as I'm concerned, Windows 7 is so far a piece of garbage.

    Hi Steve1904,
So you have use the backup and Restore to restore your files from Windows XP to Windows 7 directly?
This should be considered not work.
If you would like to transfer files between Windows XP and Windows 7, you need another tool called Windows Easy Transfer.
See the article below if you would like to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7:
Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows 7
If possible, follow the steps there, then things should be OK.
