Applications are taking years to open.

Not sure if this is the right forum to add this.
Running an osx intel network with:
open directory master
dns
fileserver
all running latest versions of osx server and all imacs are running latest version os x client.
I have a problem where office and other applications are taking forever to load and then the computer taks forever to give back woring control to the user.
All users are roaming users (students) and experience the same problem.
Im guessing its just the first time a user opens an application preferences need to be saved to the profile.
Can anyone help me?!

There are too many possibilities to solve your problem from the posted information.
For example:
Are users home directories local to their machine, or centrally located on a file server (network home directories)?
Is it all apps or just certain ones?
All client machines, or just certain ones?
You hypothesize yourself about the 'first launch' delay (which is valid since apps often run one-time setup/configuration processes), but you don't say whether subsequent launches exhibit the same problem. Office apps, in particular, are known to have a slow first-launch, so your problem might jut be that.
Are other activities slow, or is it just launching apps?
What about network performance? have you looked at your network? is your server overloaded?
Are file copies to and from the server slow?
My first guess is that you have a duplex mismatch on your server and that you're using network home directories, but that's just a stab in the dark. The above questions will help narrow it down.

  • How do I find out how much space OSX and applications are taking up on my HDD?

I am thinking of moving my OS and all applications to a SSD to free up space on my MBP.
My question is how do I find out how much space OSX and installed applications are taking up on my HDD so I know how big the SSD needs to be?  Also, what is the best way to move these files across to the new SSD once installed?
    Many thanks,
    Andrew.

If you do command-click or right click on your hard drive and select get info, it will tell you how full the HD is.
there are some apps that can show you exactly how big particular apps are

I replaced my internal drive with a SSD for performance reasons a few months ago. There are a number of ways to move your files over to the new SSD. I am a fan of the clean install, which might take a bit more time and effort but results in a very fast and trouble free mac. An easy way to do this if you are replacing your internal drive is to put the old drive in an external drive enclosure. Then you install the new SSD and install mavericks on it. In my case I used Diskmaker X to make a Mavericks installer (DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker) . Then you can reinstall your apps from scratch, and finally move your documents over from the external drive.

  • Applications are not saving or opening to/from recent folder ????????

Every time I go to open or save a file - it brings me to the same folder - which is a pain when saving many files a day - it just begin doing this, anyone know if I may of deleted a preference file or something that could cause my apps to open/save from the same place everytime??
    thanks

Hi cdigital, and a warm welcome to the forums!
I think I know what the problem is...
In finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1, 2, etc., and reboot.

  • CS4 apps are VERY slow to open Windows file browser with File Open or File Save As commands

We are running CS4 on Windows 7 with all available updates installed.   Photoshop and the other CS4 applications are VERY slow to open a Windows file browsing window to select files when File Open or File Save As menu options are run -- it can take as long as a minute or two for the window to open.  Once the window opens and a file is selected, then opening or saving the file is very quick.  The location of the default directory, whether it is on a local drive or a network drive, makes no difference.  Any suggestions as to what the problem might be?

The link that I posted earlier is off.  Read this one
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2501584.  I discovered in my network that the MS Office File Validation Patch made excel crawl when opening over the network though nothing else changed. At the time I was opening Excel on Office 2003.
You can manually turn this off by editing the registry and tunring it off.  Going forward I skipped the patch to keep my sanity.  Not sure if this is the same as your issue, but the support article will go into detail how to either have Fix it
clear the issue or change the proper registry keys.
    Hope this helps

  • Application are takimi weird amount of storage

    Hello,
I've got a Mid 2013 Macbook Air, i keep it fairly clean, i'm on the 10.9.5 mavericks and when i go into the "Informations about this Mac" (I have a polish version of system, it could be different on the english version) it shows up that Applications are taking 115 GB of disk space!
It says that i have 94 gb of free space from the 120,47 GB overall.
    Going from the left:
Audio, Movies, Photos, Applications/Programs, Backup files, Others
The Disk Utility tool says that my SSD is okay, so what's wrong with that? Why it says that applications are taking 115GB disk space? Also I can't find any movies on my mac, but it's somehow taking 48 mb of storage. The same goes with Photos. The only photos i've got are those that come with mac (screen savers and wallpapers) + 3 other wallpapers that i've downloaded.
Also i have one more question -> Do you recommend using applications like AppZapper, or should i manualy clean my SSD? I'm trying to delete all the files that i find useless, the leftovers from the apps that i've previously uninstalled etc., but i don't always know if something is important or not and I'm scared that i could delete some important stuff.

Of course auto-correct got involved and image is not working as well, sorry for that but today everything is against me.
Topic should of course be "Applications are taking weird amount of storage"
Re-indexing has changed my problem. Now it looks like this:
    Going from the left:
Audio, Movies, Photos, Applications/Programs, Backup files, Others
Image should work this time. This is re-upload of the first picture:

  • Unethical practices are taking Nokia down!!

I don't understand why whenever there is an update available for Nokia Ovi Suite, it is absolutely necessary to install before the software can even run!
Now my own laptop is not connected to the internet, the update has to be installed from the internet and this illogical process of Nokia won't allow me to connect to internet as I cannot use Ovi Suite.
Moreover, what if I DO NOT want to install an update??
I advise people at Nokia to start using the grey matter, if not theirs then buy from the market. God has given it you, the best you can do is use it.
    Regardless.

Try to check the free space on both phone and memory card.
File system errors on the memory card can also be a factor, so you might want to check it as well.
Methods to check your storage device for errors:
    Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

This is not new.  The fact that Mac OS no longer supports PowerPC applications starting with OS X Lion has been known for over a year now.  You'll need to upgrade to the latest version of Photoshop

I am getting a message "can't open because PowerPC applications are no longer supported."  What do I do about these programs?

In defense of the original poster, I just went through the Lion page (http://www.apple.com/macosx/) and the sub-pages linked on the top (including the 250 new features) and nowhere does it say anything about dropping Rosetta/PowerPC compatibility. A simple compatibility line in the tech specs page could help these kinds of threads. Nevertheless, the argument that Apple should have made this change more prominent is quite valid IMO.
Remember that Apple prides itself on being simple so don't expect everyone to be as up to date on compatibility issues as you. With the big uptake of new users in the last couple of years, these kind of questions should be expected, especially since most users are coming from Windows where compatibility is king (I can run apps from 10+ years ago with almost no issues).
Complicating the issue further is that there is no obvious way to see which older applications are PPC and which are not (who knew Warcraft 3 was PPC and not universal??).
A simple solution could be for Apple to provide copy of Rosetta that users can purchase if they want compatibility. Who knows, maybe such a solution is going to come from a third party

  • Some applications are not opening

    Hi,
Many of my applications are not opening. Sometimes when I try to open the application it doesn't even bounce in the dock.  Other times, applications will bounce in the dock and then stop.  These are crucial apps, like Mail, Pages, and iPhoto.  Safari and iTunes are working fine.
Here is some information on my mac:
I have an early 2008 MacBook Pro, 2.5 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo, 250 GB HDD, and 4 GM DDR2 Crucial RAM. I am running the latest versions of Snow Leopard, iWork, and iLife. So my computer is up to date (software wise).
Does anyone know what could be going on with my computer?
I have already tried repairing the disk and repairing the disk permissions in disk utility through the OS as well as the install disc.  Is there anything else I should try doing before taking my computer into the Apple store?
    Thanks,
    Max

    That didn't work =/
I'm still having the same issues even with a new account.

  • Message saying that I can't open the application Microsoft Word because PowerPC applications are no longer supported?

I had just upgraded my macbook to Mountain Lion and was wondering why PowerPC applications were no longer supported. Here is a recent post I assembled for a similar question:
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1. If your Mac will support it, restore OS X Snow Leopard;
    2.  If your Mac will support it, partition your hard drive or add an external hard drive and install Snow Leopard into it and use the "dual-boot" method to choose between your PowerPC software or Lion/Mt. Lion;
    3.  Upgrade your software to Intel compatible versions if they are available, or find alternative software that will;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels:

Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.  A recent poster has offered a solution for Mountain Lion users that do not have access to Snow Leopard or Lion Macs.

Rosetta is not included Lion, if you are not familiar with Rosetta it was an application included in Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard that allowed PPC based apps to run on Intel based machines. That was over 5 years ago so it's time to move on. As has been suggested you can read those documents in Pages which is available on the App Store. Pages is part of the iWorks suite that replaced AppleWorks years ago. Currently iWorks is on iWorks 09 , and includes Pages, Numbers and Keynote. You can find each on the App store.
