Applications automatically launching constantly

I have a couple machines where apps such as Photo Booth and Mail are constantly launching themselves. On one machine I do use VoiceOver and Speech Recognition - on the other I have played around with those features but have them turned off. I suspect they may be related to the issue since on the machine where they are off the system sometimes does still announce the time and start the knock knock jokes - but when I check the settings everything is off. Fortunately both machines are dual core with plenty of RAM so the impact on the users is minimal - but it is annoying on the one machine when I login to help the customer and see 8 different apps running that I know he is not using. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Is it possible they are in the System Preferences/Accounts/Log-in Items?
It seems improbable the applications would be started with Speech Recognition. The user would need to have the Listening Key pressed or say very clearly “Computer Photo Booth” and have the computer recognize it.
The time can still be announced with Speech Recognition and VoiceOver turned off by setting that option in Date & Time, Clock Tab. I don’t know about the knock-knock jokes.
Perhaps if you removed .plist files related to VoiceOver and/or Speech Recognition it might help.

  • I don't want Microsoft Word to automatically launch when I restart/reboot

    Hi All,
Microsoft Word application automatically launches when I restart/reboot the iMac. How can I fix this?
    Smells like a virus...

    Hi ctconnor;
Since there are no virus for OS X, I seriously doubt that is what is causing your problem here.
My suggestion open System Preferences then Accounts followed by Login Items. Once there deselect Microsnot Word.

  • Automatically Launching applications

    Hi There,
Is there any way to automatically launch applications at a nominated time?
Is there anything within Tiger that lets you set this, or a small app that enables it?
    Thanks
    David

There two different ways that you can do this.
If you want an app to start when your computer starts then ctrl click on it's icon in the dock, and select open at login.
If you want an application to start at a certain time, say every day, then you can set an alarm in iCal. To do so make a new event, in the show info side bar select "alarm", and directly under that. "open file", click on the name of whatever file is already there, and select "other..." from the little pop up window. select the app that you want to start, and, back in the iCal show info window again, select the time you want it to go off.
    Hope this works for you.

  • How can I disable iPhoto automatic launch?

    Hi,
I do not use iPhoto to import my digital images. How can I disable the automatic launch when I plug my camera or card reader?
    Thanks!

    Hi Paul,
To do this just open Image Capture, open its preferences and then under the general tab you can select the option of "When a camera is connected, open:"
Just select no application and that should do it.

  • Link Won't Automatically Launch Email Client

We use an intranet application database for CRM (ColdFusion) via Safari (5.0.3). Our accounts include email addresses which, when selected, previously opened a New Message in the email client of user's choice (whether Mail or Entourage, etc.)
Some employees using iPads and iPhones were noting that Mail was not automatically launching when they selected an email address (appears as a hyperlink in the database). I began to investigate, and the links are not working (automatically launching a New Mail Message in the email client) on one of our MacMinis (10.4.11) either. The links to a New Messsage are working on some of our Macs (some 10.4.11, some 10.6.6), but not all.
In my playing around with settings, somehow I have made the links not work on my MacBook Pro (10.6.6)!
Here is the copied link (with inserts for security):
    https://www.[site].com/secure/customer/log_email.cfm?id=481&mailto=[name]@[domain].org
Again, this WAS working fine in Safari on my MacBook Pro, but it is not now. I should point out that the email links ARE working in Chrome BUT NOT FireFox or Safari.
I have changed my default email client in Mail, back and forth, to see if this would make a difference, but it has not.
The CRM provider has said they haven't changed anything on their end (and again, it is working for many of our Macs).
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

    Hi,
On the iPads and iPhones. Tap Settings / General / Reset / Reset All Settings. Then restart the devices.
On the Mac for Safari. Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder. Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari. See if made a difference. If not, try emptying the Safari cache from the Safari menu, Safari / Empty Cache or Command + Option + E.
Since you have changed the default Mail client several times, you may need to delete the com.apple.mail.plist file also from the user account: ~/Library/Preferences
Make sure to make note of all your Mail preferences first before delete that.plist file.

  • App. automatically launches, but not listed in accounts/startup items

I have a pesky application which automatically launches on start-up, yet it's not listed in accounts/startup items. It's called Microtek scanner finder. I seem to remember it started doing it when I originally got the scanner and installed software, and although it's always niggled I didn't mind when I was using the scanner. However, I'm not using the scanner anymore so want to be rid of it in my dock. Where the heck is it coming from? I don't want to chuck all the software as there may be an occasion where I need to scan a transparency, when I'll need to get the old scanner down from the loft... any ideas? It definitely launches as there is a little black triangle beneath the icon in the dock. If I quit it, it disappears but is back there again on another start-up grrrrr.

Hi, Kathykate. I have a similar Epson Scanner Monitor application that starts up each time I restart my computer. (Mine does appear in Sys Prefs > Accounts > my account > Startup Items, so I could delete it from there if I wanted to.) It runs all the time in the background, using a tiny amount of CPU and memory, and it has no user interface at all: If I quit it, nothing visibly changes, and if I open it again, there's no visible sign that it's open (including no icon in the dock for it). Its only function is to detect my Epson Scanner when I plug it in and turn it on. I ignore it the rest of the time, because whether it's running or not has no impact whatsoever on anything I do. I suggest that you take the same attitude toward your Microtek app.

  • System Preferences is automatically launching

My system preferences application is automatically launching. I don't see any consistent circumstances preceding the launces, but it happens a couple dozen times a day at least. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi MacHappiest,
The simplest approach to try first would be to go to /Users/~(yourHome)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist and drag it to the desktop. You may have to re-set some of your system preferences.

I cannot get iTunes to automatically launch at startup in Windows 7. I need it to do this so my Apple TV 'finds' my Music Library, which is stored on an external hard-drive, connected to my Windows 7 PC. Anyone know how I do this? I cannot seem to find anything on Google, which is surprising.
iTunes helper launches OK, but not iTunes itself. Am I being dim?
    Thanks

The iTunes application should be installed on the system drive. You may need to repair iTunes to fix that error regarding a missing .exe.

  • How do i disable automatic launch of open programs on startup

how do i disable automatic launch of open programs on startup

    It's the Resume feature.
When choosing Restart, Sleep or Shutdown there is a checkbox you can uncheck to prevent the apps from launching.
Also in System Preferences > General there is a hard-to-find checkbox under "Number of recent items" you can turn off.
Also, you can hold the shift key to disable resume on a one time basis.
You can turn off Resume globally by going to ~/Library/Saved Application State and deleting that folder.
(note that the User Library is hidden - one way to get there is to go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library")
To turn off autosave and versions globally
If you're experiencing slow opening apps or windows since upgrading to ML... as I have... and you don't want your OS to automatically save your TextEdit files, etc. then simply disable Autosave and Versions via Terminal.
If you don't want autosave or resume you can copy & paste this command into Terminal at the prompt...
defaults write -g ApplePersistence -bool no
    Press return
    Now reboot.
    The reverse would be "yes".

  • How to stop iPhoto from automatically launching?

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
NOTE: this is not the same as routinely backing up your entire iPhoto library folder to protect your photos. It only protects the loss of your organizational efforts that the database file contains.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

  • The program is automatically launching into the debug mode.

    Hi,
I have written a small servlet program. When I try to run the program it automatically launches itself into the debug mode. I have tried all things but I am not able to prevent this from happening. Can anyone help me with this.
    Regards,
    Prashant

My guess is you have one or more breakpoints set in the application. When it its that breakpoint, it goes into debug mode. Run the application and not what file and what line it stops on. In Eclipse IDE, you will see a blue dot next to the line that the breakpoint is on. Click on the blue dot to remove it. If your code is not too large, look through all *.java files for that blue dot and remove them.

  • Automatic launch of .jar files

how to configure Java to automatically launch .jar files on double click in Windows and single click in Linux

Windows should be set up to run jar files when you install a JRE or JDK. I don't know about Linux. If it doesn't happen automatically, you must tell the OS that when you click a jar file, it should launch the jvm with the parameter "-jar [filename]".
To make your jar files executable, include a parameter called "Main-Class" in the manifest file, containing the name of the main class of your application. So if your main class (the one with the main-method) is called mypackage.myapplication.MyMain.class, the manifest file should have the entry    Main-Class : mypackage.myapplication.MyMain

  • Image Capture and iPhoto automatically launch...

    Hi:
I am using OS X Yosemite. Whenever I connect a camera to my computer, iPhoto automatically launches. Since I don't use iPhoto, I have to close it before I can download my photos to Adobe Lightroom. in iPhoto—> Preferences—> General I have it set to "Connecting Camera opens: No application"  But iPhoto launches anyway. How can I make it stop?
Whenever I connect an iOS device to my computer, the app Image Capture launches. I don't need this to happen either. How can I make it stop?
    Thanks!
    Janet

Open image caputre. Plug in the device. Select the device in the list. Open the icon at the bottom of the window and set the device to open no application or choose the application you want it to open.
Repeat for all devices you plug in to that computer.
